Met Gala WERQ: Miley Cyrus in Marc Jacobs

Posted on May 08, 2013

BITCH NAILED IT:

Miley Cyrus attends the 2013 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in a Marc Jacobs dress accessorized with Eddie Borgo jewelry.

Marc Jacobs Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Jamie Bochert

Not to do the backhanded compliment thing, but it’s a sad commentary when Miley Cyrus shuts down a whole room of fashionistas and wannabes by getting the ENTIRELY NOT DIFFICULT TO GET theme exactly right.

Miley, we hope you jumped up on a table that night, kicked over a punch bowl, hocked a lugie, gave the room the double-finger, and sang a raucously fuck-you, off-key version of “My Way” before getting thrown out. This outfit deserves no less. This crowd deserves no less.

For the theme and venue, Miley was definitely one of the best dressed. And this also actually looks good on her. HATE the hair, though.

      • http://twitter.com/Athenabast Tina Power

That’s the Punk in the outfit. You know the theme of the whole gala.

        • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

The whole outfit is punk to me. The hair totally “fits,” I just don’t particularly like it.

        • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

None of this is punk. At all. It is a reasonable facsimile. A fifth generation copy of something that was a social statement, and that statement was “fuck you, corporate bullshit. fuck you, stupid themes, stupid people with your stupid rules.” Punk chic would’ve been “I did a GOOD job of sewing/safety pinning this dress myself” but punk would’ve been better. Punk would’ve been a business suit in a sea of wannabes.

          • http://twitter.com/stephanPhD Stephan Pennington

Except that from the very beginning when Malcom McClaren decided to manufacture the Sex Pistols in order to sell the fashion from his boutique, punk has also always been about commerce.

      • RebeccaKW

I totally see her thinking “if Bill Idol was a girl…” and basing her look on that. I actually like the hair, in this instance only.

        • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

          Yes.

        • Coolekat

Perfect and the best look of the night.

        • http://www.two-halves.com/ Michelle Le

Don’t know if anyone’s said this yet (my timezone makes me late to this party, sorry!) but my first thought was, she is totally channeling a young Vivienne Westwood – she NAILED IT.

      • lindsmh

Love the dress. Hate the hair. I kind of wish she had done a fauxhawk, but maybe that would’ve been a little too on point. Still one of the best punk looks of the night.

      • http://twitter.com/RaankyRaank Raanky

Hate the hair too! That being said, it werqs so well for this dress and the theme. I would have preferred sleeker hair on her with this dress, but her hair really makes the look perfectly apropos. Love the dress, in general on her. Girl looks insanely crazy and her body looks insanely hot.

    • Sara

      She… CAN’T BE TAMED.

      • EditKitten

        Snort.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Kicked its ass and took its name.

    • alyce1213

She sure did get it right. Everything – dress, rings, hair are PERFECT!
I’m in shock, but pleasantly so.
Madonna did it literally, but this is a fabulous, high-end interpretation of punk fishnet.

      • gabbilevy

I’m practically choking on the words as I type them, but she looks awesome here. I love clever fashion and this is it.

(I’m imagining her stylist pitching this to her: “What’s more punk than fishnets? Nothing. But we’re not going literal darling,. We’re going to put you in the world’s trashiest accessory and make it look glamourous!”)

Can’t sign off on the hair, though.

        • Glammie

Oh, the hair makes it. It wouldn’t be punk without the hair. Miley’s one of the very few youngsters who got the spirit of punk–helps that she’s going through a rebellious stage. Punk was all about rebelling against what’s nice and pretty. Most of the other people who got it were old enough to remember the era. I think Miley got it because she’d have been punked out back in the 70s.

          • formerlyAnon

I think your last sentence nails it like she nailed the look and the spirit of the theme.

            • Glammie

I’ve been trying to figure out why the punk theme was such an epic fail. I was never a punk, but I could look more punk than these women without thinking about it back in the old days. Having access to attitude just kind of came with the territory. Most of the invitees are such good girls in an odd way–wanting to please people, look pretty and fit in. They’re certainly not rebelling and pushing buttons.

I think I need to go listen to The Clash now. RIP Joe Strummer.

            • formerlyAnon

I think the “wanting to look pretty” was the kiss of death.

            • http://twitter.com/pennyeager Penny Eager

Exactly… ‘how can I make punk beautiful’.

        • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Madonna did a good job with the theme, but hers was very literal and more of a costume (and she was almost a caricature of herself). Miley’s punk look is a little more subtle, in a way, and could be translated to other venues (not all, mind you), with some relatively minor adjustments. Either way, I think they both did a great job dressing for the event.

          • formerlyAnon

Her look got the “Chaos to Couture” best, I think.

    • SewingSiren

This was one of my favorites. Definitely inspired by, but not a period costume. I do wish she would have toned down the bronzer.

    • sparkleburnout

Yep, she nailed it. A sad commentary indeed. Her look is a great interpretation of the theme, while also observing a certain red carpet decorum. The hair is just right. And her ass cheeks aren’t hanging out. (yeah, I’m looking at you Madge).

    • newleaf1

Besides getting the theme, she looks damn good too. I’m liking this whole new Miley – as long as she doesn’t hock a loogie into my drink.

      • Sue_Asponte

Agreed! I loathed teen Miley but I am loving grown-up Miley. You go, rebel girl!

    • Tom Shea

I dislike her beyond reason. But she looks perfect for the event, indeed.

      • clatie

I was just scrolling down to say the exact same thing. She makes me violent. But she does look great here. It hurts me in my heart to say so.

      • http://www.facebook.com/conysoledad Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

You stole the words out of my fingertips.

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Weird, but I dislike her a little less these days. Not entirely sure why, though.

    • lucyloo222

The hair fits the theme. It’s supposed to be a little cray. My one criticism is her eye makeup. It does weird things, making her eyes look too close together or cross-eyed or something. Other than that, yeah, T-Lo, the bitch totally nailed it.

    • mhleta

You have no idea how it pains me to say this, but, yeah, she’s channelling the crap out of Laurie Anderson and Annie Lennox. Now, about those singing lessons.

    • http://twitter.com/jen_canary Jennifer Ford

She is rapidly becoming my favorite ex-tween idol on her chutzpah alone. I have seen pretty much none of her work (maybe a couple episodes of her TV show from when my niece was much younger), but I just like what I see of her.

And she nailed the EFF out of this event. She looks fantastic and that hair is super-duper punk. Love.

      • louised

I have to agree. I’ve never seen her show or heard any of her songs either. I mainly disliked her because of her ubiquity and some of the dumbass things that came out of her mouth. She still says dumbass things on occasion, but she seems to be trying to find her own way post-teen-stardom and experimenting with sex/drugs/rock and roll without going the Lindsay Lohan route. I wish she’d done something different with her hair, because I think the cut on its own is punk enough, but she was going all out. She looks great.

    • teensmom99

YES. And at the risk of repeating myself, is it surprising that the person who got the memo did not have a nude lip????

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

The nude lip is a plague.

    • decormaven

There you go. Kudos for getting it right. Well-played.

    • decormaven

There you go. Kudos for getting it right. Well-played.

    • Sobaika

Hate the hair – it needed to be shorter for this style. But other than that she served at an event that needed it desperately.

    • C. C. Winslow

She looks freaking amazing. I love the hair. Don’t even mind the weird manicure.

    • C. C. Winslow

She looks freaking amazing. I love the hair. Don’t even mind the weird manicure.

    • Patricia Gillett

A+ to her team. And extra credit for the jewelry.

    • sparkleburnout

She nailed it! I can’t say I’m a fan, but this is a deft interpretation of the punk aesthetic, within the confines of a tony red carpet event. The hair and hands are working for me too. And her ass cheeks are not hanging out. (Yes, I’m looking at you Madge).

      • MilaXX

        yes pinterest nails work here

    • Jecca2244

does she have a tattoo IN her ear?!

      • shirab

OMG I think she does. And it says “LOVE.” Because I guess, if you don’t tattoo the word onto yourself, you might not, you know, remember that love is good. Or something.

        • MilaXX

I actually like inner ear tattoos and if I wasn’t a wimp, I’d get one.

          • fursa_saida

Same, although my not getting one has less to do with wimpitude and more to do with trying to get jobs and so on. (Going for behind the ear instead, as soon as I can figure out what should go there.) But in general, I pretty much always object to any tattoo that says “Love” or “Dream” or whatever. Also tattoos in languages/scripts the wearer doesn’t understand.

            • MilaXX

Agreed, especially the ones supposedly in Chinese or Sanskrit. I always imagine they are saying something negative about the wearer who proudly thinks it says something deep. But I have seen some really cute ones inside the ear.

    • kipper

      THANK YOU !!!!! fuck yes

    • Rand Ortega

Hannah Montana is my style god? My fashion hero? What the fuckety fuck? I’d check my meds if I took any. This is shutting it down. Simple punk for real punk people. WERQ w/ 2 snaps & a head roll.

    • Joyce VG

Yeah she nailed it. She looks great.

    • VeryClaire

She looks great but did no one think to wear a pair of Doc Marten’s with a gown?

      • MilaXX

I think one of the older designer did. I was surprised no one wore black lipstick

    • EEKstl

Shockingly, she is one of the few celebs who got it right.

    • MzzPants

Never saw that comin’….a WERQ for Miley. Gotta’ admit, she is rockin’ the hell out of it.

    • Sara__B

Perfect for the venue. Perfect for her. Well done!

    • Lesley

she killed it, by far the best look of the night and not to mention the only one who understood the theme. kate moss actually wore this dress before but miley rocked the hell out if it!

      • filmcricket

Oooh, really? Man, it’s a shame Kate Moss wasn’t there. She’d have shown ‘em all how it’s done.

Miley, indeed, killed it. Top 5, possibly Top 3, of the night.

    • bxbourgie

I still think she tries WAY too hard, but this is the perfect venue for her to do so.

    • hughman

      Anarchy in the U.S.A.

    • http://www.facebook.com/RocketStarling Ashley Ellen Wilson

She looks like the doll Cynthia from Rugrats!! (can’t remember the bratty girl’s name–Angela?)

      • Kimbolina

        Angelica!

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Seriously. Why salute punk’s contributions to fashion and not wear anything with the slightest whiff of counterculture?

I love this look, but she should have touched up her roots ever so slightly to make it looks slightly less scraggly (it slightly gives the illusion of falling out with the dark roots). But bravo – her picture in profile is spectacular, and I love the hardware on her hands. I think it would have been hilarious if she’d backhanded Kanye for being rude at some point during the night, with that set of rings.

    • luluransom

And she wasn’t even born yet. Good on you, Miley.

      • OneBonBonIsPoison

I know, right?! Looking at all the pictures from this event, that Belle & Sebastian lyric kept running through my head: “you were going to a dance/you were dressed like a punk but you are too young to remember”

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Good lord, I hadn’t even thought about that. Those other ladystars should be even more ashamed of themselves now.

      • dorothea_brooke

        Yes.

While all the other Disney robots and starlets are pulling their extensions over their shoulders and thinking “I know I’m super, super pretty, but am I pretty *enough*?” Miley has style And that, friends, is priceless. Who’d of thunk Billy’s Ray’s daughter, Hannah freaking Montana, would end up here? You go with your bad self Miley!

    • Tatiana Luján

Her face looks really pretty. This is the prettiest I’ve seen her look. Her makeup people nailed it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/candice.booth.79 Candice Booth

Miley, Christina and SJP were the only ones who tried but Miley is the one who nailed it. I love everything from the hair to the jewelry and the gold nails. It is so sad that Miley of all people really understood what was needed to really brim the theme home. I hope she felt like she was The One that night.

    • Nonmercisansfacon

      Shutting it down.

    • KSpence

Okay, I’m just going to say it: I kind of love Miley Cyrus. There.

(Also, nice Sid Vicious reference, guys.)

    • http://www.facebook.com/theatrecampe Shannon Campe

The more punk she gets, the more I love her. THERE I SAID IT. I’m soooo sick of these starlets with their heavy, crunchy-looking, perfectly-styled curls. This is fun and yeah, it nails the theme. I think she’s getting it.

    • http://twitter.com/iraki86 IraKi

The hair…. oh the hair!!! I hate it but at least it is theme and venue appropriate. All in all, this is perfect for this time and place but I still hate it!

    • jw_ny

I so agree! Miley delivered. Good for her!

She was getting slammed on other sites by so called fashion critics…those people really don’t get it.

    • Erica_Vuitton

Thank you TLo for making this a WERK!!! I’ve been waiting days for you to talk about this look. From the hair to the jewelry to the DRESS and it’s perfect lining you said it best. Bitch nailed it.

Also thank you for showing the runway shot, many blogs/news outlets said she was wearing the same dress as Kate Moss from 2011.

    • thecitysleeps

Perfectly theme appropriate without being tacky (coughmadonnacough) and still looking damn hot. That dress looks like liquid sexiness on her body.

      • Qitkat

Thank goodness she kept the long underslip. If Heidi had worn this, she probably would have cut it off to flirt with the good china.

    • MilaXX

YES, this was a WERQ in my book.

      ♫ Yeaaaaaah, it’s a Party in the USA ♬

    • Janet B

Love, love, love the attitude and the dress.

    • crash1212

Perfect. Attitude and clothing. Girl rocked it.

    • flamingoNW

Of the 5 people who SHOULD have nailed it, she’s the only one who did.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

So that fishnet is entirely beaded? That’s amazing!

    • NNgela

Was hoping you’d give this a WERQ! She looks like when Daniel Desario tried to impress that punk girl with a boyfriend.

    • Qitkat

I guess the only surprise for me is that the dress was designed with the holes, I thought Miley had added them. She looks insanely good here.

      • formerlyAnon

I thought they were holes at first too. But looking at the close ups, I *think* they are places where sequins are reflecting the light. Because they aren’t in the same places on the dress, depending on which photo I look at.

        Opinions, other Kittens?

        • Qitkat

I blew up my screen and have now decided they are glittery small beads and/or sequins, not holes.

    • GorgeousThings

I never thought I would say this. She looks fabulous and is the best dressed person for the occasion in the entire museum.

    • mjude

finally (besides madonna)! love it from head to toe. she shamed quite a few.

    • fringebenefit

I was floored by how perfect she pulled this off. She is rocking this dress way better than the model.

    • formerlyAnon

Yup. This one is going to force me to like her. It’s been coming on since she first got the short haircut.

If I were going to quibble, I’d suggest she divide the hair up into two or three faux-hawk ridges, wandering at different angles over her head. She didn’t even need the hair she’s got to nail the theme, though, that dress did it single-handedly, IMO. That being so, props to Marc Jacobs and even more so to the stylist that picked this one out.

    • Sara Brams-Miller

YES! That was my thinking too. Sad day, indeed. But damn she got it RIGHT!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I’ve been seeing this trashed a lot of places and it confused me because I thought she looked great and nailed the theme. I feel better now that my favorite uncles have validated my opinion.

    • MK03

I’m continually shocked at how well this look suits her.

    • DeTrop

Top to toe A-Plus. Love the make-up and hair. She’s rockin’ the theme.

    • MasterandServant

When I saw the photos of everything, I thought that only Miley and Christina Ricci nailed the theme. Punk (as a former plaid pant wearing, multiple piercing having hardcore kid myself), is entirely about going against what is pretty or expected. Within ‘punk’ there are a multitude of genres with an overarching theme, and she freaking nailed it.

    • http://twitter.com/ashleynalvarez Ashley Alvarez

I see this and I do not understand how Life and Style called Blake Lively best-dressed of the night. WHAT UNIVERSE.

    • steeg of their own

She’s one of those people that I thought “this night was made for her”, and unlike the rest of those people (Gwen Stefani, Kristen Stewart, Debbie Harry, I am side-eyeing you all so hard), Miley managed to nail it just by doing what she does best.

She looks great, even if her ‘do sort of reminds me of a cockatoo.

    • Tracy_Flick

YES. Everyone else seems to have confused punk and BDSM. Miley and Madonna are the only ones who GOT it.

    • watchmeboogie

I couldn’t agree more. Miley of all people! It’s perfect.

    • YoungSally

Damn — that model is “interesting” — will say that Miley looks great — just not like herself.

    • http://twitter.com/schmangelo Angelo

Miley’s been showing that she’s got some serious fashion chops lately. That or she got a new stylist. Have you seen her V spread? It’s really very good. This was the perfect choice of dress, HOWEVER… Oh my god what is going on with that hair? Would have been a 10/10 for me if she went with a different hair style.

    • http://www.facebook.com/darva.sutra Darva Sutra

Shutting. It. The. F. Down. Amazing! For this I am giving her a fresh fashion start. Who knows, maybe she’ll solange herself going forward (verb added to fashion dictionary circa 2012). BTW, T Lo – did you see Giovanna Battaglia at this event? I know she’s not a big celebrity, but her look was Katy Perry adjacent & fabulous. Maybe include her in a last miscellaneous looks rundown?

Surely you guys are exhausted from covering fashion prom – we kittens SO do appreciate it, though! Thanks a million!

    • Not applicable

love the spikey hair- would love it more if it were just a skosh shorter– looks just north of crazy bitch to me…

      but otherwise- awesome!

    • Annie Lure

      Simple, unadorned, fierce.

    • Carrie Barnes

Not feeling the hair either. It makes her look like Lance Bass.

      • formerlyAnon

Yes. I thought it should have been arranged in several faux hawk ridges (NOT trying to do just one), this looks too much like any young guy whose cut has grown too far out and is trying to compensate with too much hair gel.

    • bellafigura1

Absolutely perfect, she beats Christina Ricci for me.

      • alyce1213

My top two. And Miley wins it.

    • quiltrx

She looks fantastic, AND nuts…just right for the Met Gala.

    • Donna Tabor

Doesn’t she look like Sharon Stone when she was younger in these photos?

      Absolutely fabulous.

    • pulpytomato

This was one of my favorites of the evening. She nailed it. I started liking Miley when she cut off her hair and clearly stopped caring about what others think and doing it for herself. She’s throwing a little bit of P!nk attitude out there and I appreciate it.

    • http://twitter.com/DarrenNesbitt Darren Nesbitt

in the live feed interview she said “the gown was very comfortable” and she felt like Morticia Adams. (You can rarely go wrong with Morticia reference in my book).

    • unbornfawn

Congrats Miley. She’s made so many fashion mistakes, it is really nice to see her get an unarguable WERQ! You go girl!

    • CommentsByKatie

I thought this was an aged Sharon Stone when I first saw it. But that seems to be Miley’s look nowadays.

    • imakeart

If she’d just keep those lips closed. Much as I dislike her, she did nail it.

    • jetpackdino

I am rolling around in the dirt, clawing at my heart in envy. She looks beautiful. JUST LOOK AT THAT PROFILE PICTURE. Most people live and die never having looked that good.

      • alyce1213

That profile shot is so good, if it weren’t with the others, I would not have thought it was Miley.
She takes top prize for this event in my book.

    • JauntyJohn

Gotta hand it to her. Overall she’s not my bag, but in this case on a scale of ten she’s an 11.

      Two snaps up!

    • clairellis

Really? Miley and Taylor Swift get it but GWEN FUCKING STEFANI DOESN’T?! What the hell?! It’s the apocalypse.

      One hundred percent LOVE this!

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Miley nailed the look to the wall.

    • lilyvonschtupp

Cant stand the chick, but I’ll give credit where credit’s due. LOVE the rings!

Although the model is working it better with the androgynous vibe and Chrissie Hynde hairdo

    • Pennymac

      100% WIN.

    • Imasewsure

Thank you Miley Girl for bringing it!! And I’m sorry but her hair is awesome… nouveau punk… luv huh

    • pattycap11

      total yum

    • MandyM

It’s like Billy Idol and Pat Benatar had a baby. Love!

    • Anniebet

Dammit, why did it have to be her? Now I have to temper my irrational dislike – actually, leave out the irrational part. But this little tartlet got everything right. Kudos to her team.

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

Who knew that Miley would evolve in this way? This is close to what she likes currently. She is clearly ahead of the pack. She knows what makes her look good, too.

    • TheAmericaness

      LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!

    • atelier482 .

And she was once Hannah Montana. Wow.

    • VestigialMe

      Delirium realness.

    • Tamara Hogan

      Awesomesauce with a FABULOUS chaser.

    • Danielle

It’s hard to get over the hair, but if you scroll the pictures down so the top of her head is cut off, it’s fucking amazing. She’s channeling an early ’90s Sharon Stone.

    • tereliz

ROFL, oh, God, I hope she did, too. Not a huge fan of the nude bodystocking but it’s better than sheer and it comes across as slightly dirty (as in, with dirt) which really adds to the punk factor, lol. There’s really no other way she could have done her hair. Looks like she had a lot of fun.

    • jackie cohen

I like that she went for the striking lip instead of the eyes.

    • EJS

I read your blog daily and I rarely disagree and have never commented but…really? I think Miley looks insane and I disagree that Punk was the theme of the met gala, it was theme of the curated pieces. Not everyone wore Prada to last year’s Prada met gala exhibit so why should credit be given soley on the basis that you should dress like the pieces being displayed? I think credit should be given to someone like Uma Thurman who just looks perfectly put together on that evening. And Nina Dobrev or whatever her name is killed the (unfortunate) upcoming trend of pants under these half dresses that we saw all over the runway for fall 2013. Not to mention that Kate Moss already wore and wore it well almost this exact same look a few years ago. Give miley credit when she actually looks good.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

She does look good and punk was the theme of the gala. You are free to disagree on the former.

Now that’s what Carrie Mulligan should’ve done with her hair.
Can’t stand Miley but have to give credit where credit is due. Even her pinterest nails are working, no one else’s seems to have gotten that ‘style’ right.

Pilates does a body good. The accessories are perfect.

Loving this little chica more and more

I like the dress by it’s self now that I’ve seen it on someone else with less silly looking hair. The dress wouldn’t have looked so bad had she not done her hair like that. Her hair reminds me of those spoof sun visor hats that have the fake spikey hair coming out of the top.

      She nailed it.
‘a sad commentary when Miley Cyrus shuts down a whole room of fashionistas and wannabes by getting the ENTIRELY NOT DIFFICULT TO GET theme exactly right.’ SO TRUE!

Ironically, she nailed it all except for her nails. Long, gold, Pinterest nails: so NOT punk. ;-)

But, seriously, good for her. This is what I was expecting from the theme.

Finally – Miley’s usual taste is in vogue for the occasion. And it’s a tasteful vein of sexy and body conscious without any tacky cutouts or body jewelry or overexposed bits. The hair and make-up are good for the event also. Looks great. Except that last sneery face shot.
