Met Gala WERQ: Christina Ricci in Vivienne Westwood

Posted on May 07, 2013

Well, we suppose wearing Westwood to a punk-themed gala is something of a no-brainer, and thus we’re awarding the coveted international award known as WERQ to someone who just displayed good common sense, really. Then again, we’re shocked by how little Westwood was seen in the crowd last night, relatively speaking.

Christina Ricci attends the 2013 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in a Vivienne Westwood couture gown accessorized with a Ferragamo clutch, Casadei shoes, and Harry Winston jewelry.

But the lady nailed it, you have to admit. Love the fishnets. Vivienne Westwood’s not at all easy to wear, but it really helps if you’re thimble-sized.  She should consider wearing it more often. She can easily do edgy and still look sophisticated.

Anyway, we love this, as if you couldn’t tell, and we felt the need to do neck rolls and Z-snaps in her direction. You WERQ that punk chic, girl.

This is the best I’ve ever seen her look.

    • AudreysMom

      Ladies and gentlemen: Wednesday Westwood.

  • Sobaika

YESSSSS!! Perfect marriage of style, edge, and art.

    • drdarke

Perfect mix of sexy, chic and punk – Brava, Ms. Ricci!

  • Brad G nailed it. I thought this was the perfect answer to being glamorous and punk. WERQ!

    • Brad did do well here! J’adore this look! Love the hair, love the stocking, and love love love the dress! Finally someone figured out the venue!

  • berkeleygirl

Utter perfection… The fact that she’s so tiny also makes the short skirt front work.

  • Tartan Westwood no less – perfect!

    • I saw the Punk theme and assumed we’d be seeing a WALL of tartan Westwood! Am sorely disappointed!

  • GorgeousThings

Fabulous. I wish I could wear Westwood!

    • Glammie

I have a Westwood jacket. Basically, it’s not about being thimble-sized, but being really hourglassy–the jacket has a tiny waist for its shoulders.

  • FINALLY!!!… All hail the Queen of punk fashion.

  • I guess if HBC wasn’t there, this is a nice second. She looks good, although that asymmetric top of the bodice is making me twitch a little.

    • ballerinawithagun

Yes, a titscrepency, as our boys would say. But she looks fabulous.

  • boldprint

    gor-jus. full stop.

  • Missy Covington

Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous. Love the elegant (eleguent!) lacquered hair with the soft waves. Love the brown/blue plaid (though it’s a little autumnal).

  • alyce1213

LOVE! I normally hate hi-lo, but it works here as a whole, with that fabulous plaid and pickups.
This is phenomenal — dress, hair, accessories — a WERQ for Christina.

  • hunt3002

This EXACTLY what I envisioned for the Met Ball. Vintage Vivienne Westwood is a no brainer. I don’t understand what stylists were thinking.

  • Synnamin

I, too, am confused by the lack of Vintage Westwood or even Gaultier on the RC. Seriously!

  • SewingSiren

Yep. She looks great. This is exactly what they were calling for.

  • louised

Perfect! Love the shoes. Thank dog Madonna wasn’t the only one who got it.

  • Jacqueline

Agreed. Snaps all around. She really brought it on kind of a lackluster night.

  • Spicytomato1

Agree. She looks amazing from head to toe. The hair color and style is a personal best, too, I think.

I also keep seeing Madonna in this dress, or a variation thereof. I think it would have been a better choice than her pantsless ensemble. Her hair and makeup would have worked great with this, too.

  • Needs a good hoisting, but a WERQ none the less. I can’t help but think the overall failings of others has really played in her favor here.

  • If I weren’t in the middle of the library right now I’d stand up and applaud. THIS is how you should look when you’re going to the Met Gala and the theme is punk. WERQs all around.

  • hughman

    +10 for wearing Westwood.

Teeny story : I once went to a YSL perfume party held at night on Liberty Island centuries ago and rode over on a boat with Westwood and her husband. Let me tell you something, Lady does not suffer fools gladly. Thank god I wasn’t in her line of fire but I was still terrified of her.

    • Introspective

How much do I live for this story. (all of the elements: ysl party. To which you had to travel by sea. With Viv on board. My head is exploding)

But what I live for even more: Christina rocking the shit outta this look. (&The fishnets!!! My go to hose of choice-another round of applause for the fierceness of those legs alone)

      • hughman

Ha! Thanks, Intro! It was a fun party. For the launch of YSL’s (then) new perfume “Paris” held there because the French gave America the Statue of Liberty. Champagne! Nibbly bits! Fireworks! I went with a well-known “Downtown Socialite” and we were all very young and “cool” and whatever. I got to give my mom the free bottle of perfume from the gift bag too so win/win. Another great perk of her having a gay son I told her.

  • Tatiana Luján

I like everything, but I hate the shoes.

    • Violaine

I think the point of the shoes is that they reference Ghillies.

  • THIS is how you do a “mullet dress”

  • stubbornthoughts

I LOVE this and would totally rock it myself to a Punk Gala. When I saw this picture of her not too long ago, it just felt right and perfect for her and the occasion. BRAVA.

    The fishnets are killa.

  • dorothea_brooke

The colors of the plaid are perfect on her. Lovely!

  • I was thinking maybe all the stylists figured everyone would be wearing Westwood and McQueen, so they avoided them? Who knows. Either way, this was definitely one of the best of the night.

    • But it’s not like there aren’t infinite Westwoods are McQueens, they are pretty diverse lines.

  • Rand Ortega

Very surprised there wasn’t more McQueen or Westwood there. Did I miss it?
Kudos to La Ricci. She & Madge appear to be the only 1’s who read, let alone got, the theme memo.

    • MilaXX

I’m in the minority but I liked Miley Cyrus as well.

      • As did I. What is the world coming to when a punk themed Met Gala is boring and Miley is a best dressed?

      • Rand Ortega

        Just checked MC. Nailed it!

        • MilaXX

I kinda wish she had a saftey pin earring or something though, but I guess that would make it too costumey

          • Rand Ortega

            Safety pin earring(s)! Brill!

      • formerlyAnon

Yes. Miley is in my top 3 or 4 – I think her dress captured the theme better than almost anyone’s. (shout out to Sewing Siren for mentioning her, since it would have been days before I got around to scrolling through all the Met guest pictures & came across her).

        • MilaXX

          check out designer Zandra Rhodes

  • MilaXX

I love the look, but the boobs look like they could use some support.

  • BPlease

I just love this. Favorite look, and I agree that not seeing more Westwood was a little surprising.

I suppose no one would’ve attempted it but what a shame that no one wore that safety-pin Versace that put Liz Hurley on the map. Have any dresses along those lines, besides Christina’s, here, really jumped out at anyone at being perfect for this event?

  • I’m still waiting for Rooney Mara, she looked fab.

  • Somebody got the memo, and replied WERQing it! Now where’s HBC?

  • MK03

I knew this was Westwood when I saw it. My fashion education is paying off!

  • teensmom99

Tiny person who did not get overwhelmed by her big dress–just for that she would get points. She looks amazing.

  • Martha Deutsch

bit of a titscrepency, though, no?

also, no betsey johnson last night.

  • VeryClaire

My dad had a flannel bathrobe in that plaid for about 20 years. It’s hard to get past that but this is a great dress for this event (and perhaps this event only).

  • Qitkat

The Veronica Lake hair is beautiful too. As is the dress. Although the bodice looks to sit too low, I don’t think the style would allow it to be pulled up.

    • It works well with the single earring here, too; a lot of celebs tried to use that sort of mismatch to mean punk, but failed in that regard.

  • E. D.

    Yay!! Definitely a WERQ.

  • Carly Warnock

This is exactly the look of the night.

  • Perfect. The lack of tartan on the red carpet last night was disappointing.

  • MoHub

Jeffrey Sebelia’s PR season 3 Westwood knockoff.

    • alyce1213

I remember that yellow plaid gown in Paris very well. A Westwood knockoff, but a really good one as I recall.

      • MoHub

The problem is, here we are years later, and Westwood is still doing the same thing.

        • alyce1213

I’m of two minds about that: 1) she’s not moving forward and relying on the same ol’ same ol’, or 2) if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. In her case uniquely, I give an edge toward the second because she has defined and is defined by her particular aesthetic, There’s an audience for it. She’s one of a kind — unless of course, someone is copying her.
I do like this one very much, even though it’s a mullet, which I normally hate. It looks like fun to wear.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I couldn’t agree more. One of the sharpest looks of the evening.

  • Love love she did the best of all and so easy picking Westwood. I also love her as a ginger.

  • nannypoo

  • Ren

I can also see of Helena Bonham-Carter on this ensemble . This would be right up her alley!

  • Corsetmaker

Perfect! That’s all there is to say.

  • jw_ny

    I love this too…total WERQ!

If she wore this as is to any other function tho, I’d have some issues (mullet skirt!) but for this theme and function…perfect.

  • Anniebet

This one had me smiling big time. WERQ that quirk, sweetie!

  • Ahhh there we go.

  • lehen

she’s having a wee titscrepancy, but still fantastic.

  • WERQ for sure

  • YES! It has the right vibe and aesthetic while remaining stylish and attractive. No wackadoo makeup required to send the message.

  • MissAmynae

2nd Best dressed, behind SJP. Total WERQ-worthy.

  • jilly_d

God, she really nailed it. That hair color is really terrific on her.

  • Cindy Claussen

She looks like a well put together baby Helena Bonham Carter

  • librarygrrl64

That dress is sitting way too low on her for a WERQ in my book, but the choice of everything here is fantastic. Plaid was a part of a lot of punk looks, especially in Scotland and in Britain as a whole, so this was a great shout-out to that aspect of the era, especially with the fishnets and stilettos.

  • elzatelzabelz

Other ladies at the event take note, pretty punk can be done. I’d like to see it a bit messier & alternative to fit the theme, but very pretty.

  • She was made to wear Westwood. This is perfection.

  • TNL, Best she has ever looked on RC! VIvienne I think stole the show in her look w the pic of the Am soldier convicted of security espionage on her gown

  • Call me Bee

Looks very cool, though the dress reminds me a lot of Jeffrey’s winning Project Runway dress. And she needs some lessons in how to stand in very high heels–looks as though she may topple over at any moment.

    • CommentsByKatie

Hivemind! Jeffrey’s dress! I commented the same thing. This is so fabulous.

    • CommentsByKatie

Hivemind! Jeffrey’s dress! I commented the same thing. This is so fabulous.

  • CommentsByKatie

Yesss I am so agreeing with the uncles today. Christina Ricci and Katy Perry were two of my favorites, too. This reminds me of Jeffrey’s French couture look, the yellow plaid, from Laura’s season of PR.

Palama Faith took the cake for me though! I’m hoping you’ll feature her later.

    • Corsetmaker

      Paloma Faith looked amazing!

  • It works for the most part. The fishnets were a very complementary choice. I like this particular tartan. The dress is bunched up but artfully so. The boobs could use A LOT of help.

  • formerlyAnon

The shoes disappoint, but otherwise SHE at least got her money’s worth out of her team.

  • quiltrx

KILLER! She looks great in the gown, and the styling is absolutely fabulous.
And Viv gets it…the way to make a mullet dress awesome is to make it NOT a mullet–but a cascading pile of fabric perfection!

  • j_anson

Oh, so THIS is the look Helena Bonham-Carter is going for.

  • ItsDicey

THIS is how you do punk chic! YEAH!

ETA: Although a pair of kickass punk boots would’ve been perfection.

  • MandyM

This is the best I’ve ever seen her! I just wish she didn’t make the duck lips face.

  • Is that the Anderson tartan? Looks like it. It was my school uniform in middle school, so nope.

  • alebaby

it’s good… the hair should be more punky….

  • jmorino08

You raise an interesting point. So, is it that: Today’s stars are too risk averse? Are stylists too trend driven and totally ignorant of fashion history and pedigree?

  • Girl, you deserve claps and snaps!!
The only mullet skirt I’ve ever liked.

  • jetpackdino

I love, love, love her hair. It’s down, it’s long, and it’s DONE. It isn’t a stick-straight bore, there are no cocker spaniel ears, she doesn’t look like she just breezed in from yoga. This is movie star hair. Bowing down.

  • crash1212

I worry for the fate of her right boob, but this look kills. I love the shoes and I love the fact that she didn’t go all cra-cra with her hair…and most importantly, no Pinterest nails!

  • kimiakay

Love this, love this! I love these colors, the plaid. Her hair is perfect, the red in her hair complements the brownish red in the plaid. For me she is the best dressed of the night. It all seems to balance just perfectly, hence the shoes work with it, I think.

  • pattycap11

this is the girl to hang out with. she’s awesome!

  • Love the manicure! Not pinterest! She looks great in this, but I never recognize her anymore.

  • I’m in love with the plaid. This was a perfect execution of TLo’s “know your venue” rule. I like the styling, but I’m not sure if that hair color is the best for her.

  • Coco Cornejo

She looks fab. Could her eyes get any larger?

  • this. punk through a fashion lens. purr-fection.

  • But what happened to christina ricci & her actual face? that face is some kind of mashup hollywood face & it confuses me. Wednesday isn’t even a ghost in that machine at this point. Not that she *should* look like her 12 year old self, but still, shouldn’t she be in there somewhere…?

  • bellafigura1

Absolutely, utter agreement. Punk couture perfection. WERQ.

  • mhleta

It needs an upward hoik and jewelry that is decidedly more badass. Those bracelets, though lovely, are too delicate and elegant for this.

  • maggiemaybe

Finally! This is perfection. Only Wednesday and Madonna seem to have any grasp of the theme here. Seeing all these folk in their “punk” outfits makes me think they really have no concept of punk whatsoever. I mean, you can look it up on the internet. I’m pretty sure there are pictures…

  • MasterandServant

When I saw this yesterday, I though “this look is exactly what I would have done.” I was disappointed with most, but this was a perfect blend to me. And I do love plaid!

  • FINALLY, someone with a little color on her face. She looks fab! I saw this yesterday and immediately pumped my arm in the air and yelled “WERQ!!”, to the astonishment of my husband.

  • lobsterlen

Love the plaid. I mean this as a compliment … punk meets can can.

  • ToniMacAttack

She looks like Lady Helena Bonham Carter’s little sister. I approve.

  • EEKstl

I, too, was shocked by the lack of VW considering the theme. She looks fab and love the dress.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

She looks fantastic, gotta give it up!

  • jackie cohen

She looks great but I have the urge to pull the dress up.

  • tereliz

I was shocked there was so little Westwood as well, and even more shocked to see Christina land on some worst dressed lists. Pah! What do they know? Christina, this is YOUR DRESS. Love it. She looks great.

  • Most starlets, when choosing a Vivienne Westwood, default to the same satiny, gathered hem and pointy boobs dress. I wish more of them would go for the tartans for a red carpet or any other event.

She looks gorgeous. That dress is amazing, I love the colors of the fabric, I covet those shoes and envy her hair.

  • Really like this look, except the wonkiness in the bust area is bothering me.

  • decormaven

Kick it, girl! That’s style on parade.

  • Christine

Loved this and loved it on her. You two are so correct — why wasn’t there more Vivienne Westwood on the red carpet?

  • The right amount of everything. Fair play. SM-Tina

  • ojosazules

    So gorgeous. Perfect.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

If there’s anyone who can rock punk-chic, it’s only fitting that it would be Christina Ricci. She looks amazing.

  • She looks great but then, she usually does. She’s one of the few who knows what works for her and it shows. Well done.

  • unbornfawn

She looks great. Wish I didn’t feel the need to hoist up the bodice.

  • Tracy_Flick

    Must. Pull. Up.

  • bluefish

Queen of the Evening! She looks great from head to toe.

I’m kind of surprised that no one showed up in Patti Smith style wear. The famous Mapplethorpe photo, etc. That was the classic American (early) punk look for women back in the day and every bit as chic now as it was then. A luxe version would’ve been … epic.

I do love this on CR though and her hair and make-up, while not punk, are gorgeous.

  • Mariah J

  • roche

This was my favorite dress of the evening (though I thought Madonna had the best outfit). I was so happy when TLo posted it as a Met Gala WERQ! That plaid is genius, and Vivienne Westwood should have been all over this night, but not so much. And Ms. Ricci’s attitude is what’s selling it. Hair, fishnets, shoes — love.

  • kathrineb

She looks great 🙂 ! My one issue with this: I think it would be more punk without those particular earrings they seem a little fussy with this.

    • Styled by Brad Goreski, it turns out; I don’t think he’ll ever get over his Rachel Zoe training about bangles and bling.
