Met Gala: Solange Knowles in Kenzo

Posted on May 07, 2013

Oh Solange. We’re in love with your head. It’s a shame it doesn’t really go with the dress.

Solange Knowles attends the 2013 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in a Kenzo dress accessorized with an Edie Parker clutch.

Seriously, look at those closeups. Her hair, face and earrings are giving us LIFE BEYOND LIFE, darlings. And while we appreciate the dress for being different than everyone else’s, we can’t say we’re in love with it. Besides, those fabulous earrings kinda clash, and if we had to make a Sophie’s Choice moment and decide which aspect of her outfit should live, it would definitely not be the dress. We’d have advised her to ditch the dress and build an outfit around that fabulous head.

This is just too disco for me. It looks like a costume dress.
I know nobody asked, but I’d kill for legs like that.

  • MilaXX

I like the look, but this is Pam Grier 1970′s realness, not punk. Love the wig though.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

      Exactly!

    • filmcricket

As someone on GFY said: she heard ‘funk’ not ‘punk.’

      • drdarke

At least it fits somewhere, @filmcricket:disqus – a decade and a coast off, but it almost works on its sheer awesomeness anyway.

Even as we speak, Quentin Tarantino is writing a movie for her in that dress….

What is that yellow mess in the background??

    • Meg0GayGuys6

A mess indeed. It’s Lisa Falcone, according to another site. The dress, if you can find a head to toe shot is disastrous. The top of the yellow “dress” comes up to just under her bust, and she’s wearing a black bra above it. The whole look was pretty fug, though, the right person, wearing the dress where it should be (venue and body) could be kinda cool.

      • alyce1213

        Worst possible photobomb.

        • l_c_ann

Nope, worst possible photobomb would have had her sister in the background with JLo and a Kardash to be named later.

  • bxbourgie

    It’s very Diana Ross.

  • imperfectlaura

For having so many elements to it, the dress feels oddly shapeless.

  • alyce1213

I couldn’t disagree more. This dress is perfect for her big natural hair — a primitive-inspired block print type fabric is exactly the right thing. I’m not a fan of undershorts but I just love this outfit. The color is gorgeous.
I’ve kvetched about her hair being proportionately too high, but here it’s equally wide and looks phenomenal.
This is a WERQ. A really BIG WERQ.

    • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

      Agreed. WERQ it, Sol!

    • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

      Yes! Is that a…shlit? (shorts+slit?)

    • http://www.facebook.com/sheneve Sheneve Butler

I agree, this is a WERQ for me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1316070988 Roey Thorpe

Agreed. It is one of the best looks I’ve seen on the runway at this event or in the past few years.

  • Imasewsure

Great dress for a summer Absolut Cocktail launch party… wrong and dull here… love her head too!!

    • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

      Nailed it.

  • jmorino08

Except for when her left leg takes a starring role in the shot, she looks like she has no shape in that dress! Just a long straight column, supporting a fabulous head.

  • Guest

  • random_poster

The left side gap is so huge it’s now a side mullet dress!

  • another_laura

sad. I hope this is not a trend for Ms. S

  • Sobaika

I am here for those earrings.

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

I will fight you for them.

      • Sobaika

        You will lose.

        • MilaXX

I will steal them while you 2 do battle & take the ring with them.

          • formerlyAnon

Craftiness wins out over open combat. Go Ms. MilaXX!

  • roble ridge

From the neck up, she’s divine. But the dress looks too commercial and is wrong for this occasion. She needed something with more oomph for the Met Ball.

  • http://twitter.com/ThisMersLife Meredith

you will do beyonce, won’t you TLo?

  • ChaquitaPhilly

    Isn’t that one–leg–sticking–out–thing over yet???

    • alyce1213

I don’t think she even has a choice with this dress. It’s a wide opening, not just a slit.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

The head is great, as are the earrings. I LOVE the pattern and the color of the dress, just not that weird half hem.

  • FrigidDiva

Not a huge fan of the dress but it’s gads better than big sister’s ensemble. Then again, that’s not really saying much…

  • http://twitter.com/RaankyRaank Raanky

Out! So not loving the dress, but I do love the hair!

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I want to like it, because it’s Solange, and she can make the un-workable work, but this? No. I actively loathe this dress. But from the neck up, she’s gorgeous as usual.

  • Beverly Kozma

That’s almost a Diana Ross-level face. Great make-up. I love the print on that dress, but I don’t see punk anywhere.

  • DeTrop

That print is fab. Her face and make up look fab. Not very punk however. With everything she still looks better than her sister. Beyonce always comes in last and has someone trailing behind to fix her train. She’s too much of a diva for me. Solange is the deal.

  • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

I am really surprised that she went with such a nothing dress to such an upscale event.

  • ojosazules

Her head is at the Met Gala. Her dress belongs at a pool party.

  • judybrowni

She’s a great beauty, but the dress somehow makes her body look chunky and her boobs floppy.

    As if!

  • Lesley

if the theme for the MET was disco she would have killed it

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OQG2B3GDOIKSFYT6YDXFVOMEM4 A. Lure

TERRIBLE print. The kind you’d see on dust-rags. The dress is highly unflattering to her figure. It’s as if it’s designed to attenuate her curves. TERRIBLE proportions: from the slit to the waist to the cut-outs. It’s beyond bad. What was she thinking?

  • Janet B

Her hair, makeup and earring are fantiactic, but none of it seems Punk.
fantastic The fabric is fabulous, but the dress is a big no.

  • crash1212

I don’t hate this dress. I love all that is going on neck and above. What’s really pulling my attention though is that gigantic yellow monstrosity that seems stapled to a black bra behind Miss Solange and off to the right. WTF?

    • alyce1213

If only we could control ugly photobombs.

  • sweetlilvoice

Her hair and face are a thing of beauty! A young Miss Ross.

  • http://twitter.com/FashionFollower FashionFollower.com

This is a snooze for me. And the bag… talk about matchy matchy! Stacy and Clinton would not approve.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=561903133 Sage Andersen

This is easily my favorite look of the night, though calling it punk is a streeetch. Her head, in fact, is perfect.

  • http://twitter.com/schmangelo Angelo

Pam Greer goes to the Met Gala

  • SewingSiren

    Fuck punk I’m doing Fierce.

  • Qitkat

Absolutely, my very favorite look, even not being punk. Love the fabric design, the color, the neckline, the purse, the jewelry, the hair, the side glance (I’m imagining it’s at her sister, in her mind saying, I wonder which one of us the other people think is more fierce tonight, hmmm?)

  • flamingoNW

Well, I like it, except for the accessories. Not loving the bag and earrings

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

I dunno, I love it, she can clearly do no wrong for me.

  • samo_samo

I really wish she had done an edgier punk or punk-inspired look. She would have NAILED IT.

  • http://www.facebook.com/candice.booth.79 Candice Booth

Her hair, accessories and makeup are just beyond!

  • nannypoo

I’m not sure it’s the right dress for the event, but I like it. It would look perfect if she had braided her hair.

  • Anniebet

Pretty fricking cool. Not so sure the components work together, but she still is amazeballs.

Looks like she got all the taste in the family. I do love that she’s not a Bey clone. Maybe her sis will read TLo and get a clue? Nah, not likely.

  • ballerinawithagun

If it were a different event, it would be perfect. Punk Out Of Africa???

  • Monabel

The dress would be OK if it were a dress and not a frame for hotpants.

  • MissAmynae

Maybe her invite had a typo and said “Funk.” She is divine, and that head- wowwee- but i needed something more from her. She could pull off a look from Galliano’s infamous “Homeless” collection for Dior.

  • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

I love this dress–not for this event; what fascinates me it that it looks like a cardboard cutout that has been propped up in front of her. It’s two-dimensional op art!

  • bd73

she’s lovely, but underdressed by a mile.

  • demidaemon

Rectangle with a fabulous head. Such a missed opportunity.

  • Call me Bee

yeah–hair and accessories are very nice, but the dress is not really appropriate for this occasion.
However–I’m more than a little scared by the chick in the yellow and black behind her. That is one weird outfit.

  • formerlyAnon

The head has a Mod Squad Goes to the Met Gala feel to it, and I think the dress was an attempt to adapt a dashiki to the gala that just didn’t work.

I think the way the clutch goes with the dress is impressive.

  • quiltrx

I love the print (it’s sort of a quilting design, to my eye)…but not the shape. Too many design detours for its own good.
    But that head is marvelous.

  • BrooklynBomber

I would love the dress if it wasn’t Franken.

  • alebaby

    the print is no good…

  • http://www.linkedin.com/pub/anne-mccandless/1a/238/38a Anne

Has anyone seen the picture that Kim K tweeted of her, beyonce, and solange? The expressions on Bey + Sol’s faces is priceless.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Holy WOW, Batman! She looks wonderful–from the neck up. Not loving the dress. Do love your use of a “Sophie’s Choice moment”, TLo.

  • teensmom99

Just saw this and I think she looks amazing. I love the dress. WE’ve already established that punk means something different to these folks than to us and she looks fabulous. I’d give her best in show!

  • shelley514

My understanding is that Solo considered this look to be “Afro punk.” I think that’s a stretch. I’m not feeling this dress at all, but Solo looks gorgeous nonetheless.

  • frannyprof

I’m getting tired of her hair, personally. If she’s going to rock a ‘fro like that, the rest of her needs to match.

  • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Caterina Maria

Something about the lighting and the print make the dress look Photoshopped into place in certain pictures.

  • http://twitter.com/DarrenNesbitt Darren Nesbitt

On twitter Solange said “Afro-Punk” which was a cool personal twist. That makes PERFECT sense to me because afro-punk is her actual style day-to-day (google afro-punk style) but then again it’s not actual Punk that was called for in the Met exhibit.

  • julnyes

love her head, but that is not a gala worthy dress at all.

  • lilyvonschtupp

OH when will people get with the program and realize how much more beautiful Solange is than the Queen Bey?

She has such a natural, fresh look to her with the homage to Diana Ross (although I never remembered Miss Ross with a fro)

But I’ll take that fro wig over Bey’s mangy blonde weave any day.

  • pdquick

This outfit is completely HIDEOUS. I love it!

  • bitterk

    Hair, yes. The rest NOT

  • PrunellaV

No one rocks an Afro like Solange, although I wish they’d try.
