Met Gala: Jessica Paré in Jason Wu

Posted on May 08, 2013

Credit where it’s due; at least she’s trying to be a little dramatic and off the beaten path.

‘Mad Men’ star Jessica Paré attends the 2013 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in a Jason Wu outfit accessorized with a Jason Wu clutch and shoes, and Delfina Delettrez jewelry.

And we dig the outfit. But it’s a little on the underwhelming side for the Met Gala.

We really hate her tendency to wear her hair like that. It does nothing for her. What’s the Bitter Kitten take on the eye makeup? Fun? Too much? Ugly? We’d probably like it more with some crazy hair. With that tight center part, it’s all looking a little Day of the Dead to us.

Hilarious. Before I scrolled down, I was actually thinking “Day of the Dead”!

  • aeb1986

man, do i hate that eye makeup. i can’t even get past it to determine if i like the outfit (which i think i do). the hairs a no for me too

  • Angelo

Too much eye makeup. Appreciate the silhouette though.

  • She looks like she’s trying to ape Rooney Mara, and failing. I can’t wait for this slick, parted ponytail trend to be done – I know you boys tend to recommend it for stark looks, but all I can think when I see that stark middle-part is Alfafa from Little Rascals.
That blue polka-dotted fabric looks cheap, especially as a butt train.
I dunno, I wish I could like this but it just looks dated without looking like a punk reference (as in, I could forgive it for looking dated/cliche if it referenced punk at all, but it doesn’t even manage to do that).

  • Sad, creepy harlequin.

  • MilaXX

Ginnifer did it better. For this look you need to have a prominent brow, so the brow should have been filled in darker & she might have tight lined her eyes. Once again the outfit does not live up to the face. I also totally agree about the slicked back center part. For me it only draws attention to her overbite.

  • Bethany Fairbrother

I admire the makeup artist for the eye make up. It was much better than Elle Fannings. However, she needed to break up the block of color with some high lighter on the brow.

  • Hair’s awful, eye makeup’s awful, outfit’s awful. Awful trifecta. It’s a shame, because I’m starting to really like her.

  • crash1212

Severe hair is not her friend.

  • bluefish

Very Super Hero of her! I don’t mind flamenco style hair but way too much blue eye shadow and that severe center part take it straight into costume territory. Pretty feet though and love those shoes. The bracelet makes it look as though she has thick wrists — Love all the stuff going on in the background of these photos. This would make a super coffee table book.

  • Little_Olive

Raccon came trough the kitty door. At the sight of the dog, raccoon started running like mad, got tangled in the curtains and flew the hell outta there

  • What?! No. No. That eye makeup is not doing her any favors. Why did people assume punk chic = ugly eye makeup? And the outfit is a total miss, too. The whole look makes me feel…. awkward. I’m uncomfortable for her.

  • lrober03

That blue is a great color on her though.

  • dorothea_brooke

I hate that blue fabric, irrationally so. My first husband’s mother wore a dress made of it (or something very similar) at our wedding, and let’s just say it was an omen. She was not a woman of good taste. The bracelet’s pretty. Otherwise, no. The whole thing is awkward but not in a punk way.

  • Long, sleek pony tail and some fake bangs and she woulda killed it.

  • Corsetmaker

Yes! This! You can’t take the dark colour right to the brow, it looks so bad!

  • Corsetmaker

Y’know, if they wanted edgy, punky eye make-up then I’m pretty sure they could’ve dragged some girls off the street who could do the eye make-up better than that!

  • Sarah

IF you’re going to cover your whole orbital socket with eyeshadow, I think it should at least match or call to your outfit. This looks raccoony, and it clashes.

  • Honey, you’re at a gala, not on the runway. That kind of hair and makeup is impossible to have a conversation with. However, the garment is stunning on her.

  • teensmom99

Love her crazy 1968 eye make up on mad men worn with those falls. This–not so much.

  • quiltrx

She has a very ‘skeletal’ face with no hair around it…makes her less pretty to me. And again (I think we’ve said this at least 3 times already)–that much eye color needs a not-nude lip to balance it out.
There’s something too ‘Dynasty’ about the outfit. But that expanding cuff bracelet kicks ass.

  • She looks like a corpse with that hair and makeup. Not liking it at all.

  • louised

Eye makeup is awful. I’m sorry, but punk/goth eye makeup does not equal “spread gray eyeshadow from lid to eyebrow.” She looks even dumber than Ginnifer Goodwin because her outfit (awful) and hair (also awful) are totally Studio 54 disco, not punk.

    • Mb

      Yes, definitely disco.

  • maygoon

I’ll never me able to look at single-shade eyeshadow from lashes to brows without thinking of “garage doors.” Thanks Raja!

  • flamingoNW

I dig the outfit, and the eyes are a tad much but somehow it works for me with the outfit and the theme. Outfit would have been dull without it. I give it a pass.

  • Bakerlooline

No. Just no. PEPLUM! Or since there really isn’t a skirt here – peplette?

  • Sobaika

It might have looked better with a stronger brow and different hair, but her eyes are deep-set to begin with. The eye makeup wouldn’t have looked great on her either way.

    • MilaXX

Maybe that’s why they didn’t go as dark on her.

  • MK03

I hate absolutely EVERYTHING here. The hair, the dress, the leggings, the shoes, THE MAKEUP, the jewelry. Jessica, PLEASE get some new gays.

  • bellafigura1

Why would anyone try to look this scary?

  • filmcricket

Well, close up with that eye shadow her face is vaguely reminiscent of The Misfits’ logo, so that’s sorta on-theme. Dig the shoes & the bracelet, not much else.

  • CarolinLA

    My eyes!!! My eyes!!!

  • mightbewrong

Ack. The skeletal look is kind of unnerving. Don’t care for the outfit, either.

  • Fordzo

WHY does she add extra ornaments to the cauliflower ear?

  • I can’t stand eyeshadow that meets the eyebrows and as for the outfit I wish the back was more like it was on the model.

  • Yuck to all of it. It makes her look broad as a barn, which she is NOT, and the makeup and hair make her face look like a skull.

  • nannypoo

Hair and makeup are both awful. The only thing I like here is the color.

  • That’s a whole lotta NO, from this Bitterest of Kittens.

  • Sara L.

I am kind of mesmerized by that bracelet, which I love, because this is all working for me. I think she looks kind of cool, and if not punk, at least punk-adjacent. That might just be the bracelet-dazzle talking, though.

  • Mariah J

Fugly hair. Fugly makeup. FUGLY dress-thing.

  • Chris

Why did every woman at this event confuse “Punk” with Black Swan eye makeup?

  • harlowish

Speaking of the “Mad Men” ladies, I hope you gentlemen will cover January Jones’ look. Bitch WENT THERE with the makeup. I loved her head so much I can’t even remember what her outfit looked like.

  • Qitkat

This hairstyle does not flatter her, it looks like a skull cap with a part, waiting for a wig. However, the royal blue is a fantastic color with her skin tone.

  • decormaven

Good grief. It’s not like punk was a million years ago and people are having to rely on cave paintings to evoke a similar image. This is just dumb, and that outfit reminds me of a hostess outfit my Barbie wore back in the day.

  • CommentsByKatie

Love the shoes. Ginnifer Goodwin’s eyebrows look much better on her than they do on Gin. Love that she is working it and flinging her peplum cape out. But the whole thing is doesn’t seem formal/glam enough for me.

  • PrunellaV

The outfit is great, but she needs new hair and makeup people.

  • She looks like she’s wearing a superhero mask. OUT

  • hac51

Reminds me of that bike shorts gown thing Demi Moore wore back in 1988 or so.

  • Since when does a punk theme for a party in 2013 mean make yourself look ugly?

  • JauntyJohn

Like a pseudo-ethnic costume in the third row of dancers in a Disney stage show.

  • The makeup is a mess, but the worst part is really her waving the top’s train around like a matador. Not for the Met, honey.

  • Wendi126

Hair like Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction- would soften her jaw and give balance to the crazy eye makeup which is fun..what the hell..have fun before all else

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Someone hit that poor woman in the eye.

  • Contralto

    Unattractive in the extreme.

  • demidaemon

The make-up is fine in the far away shots, but it gets a bit “I’m going to eat your brains” in the close-up. I’m talking nightmares here, people.

  • clairellis

I hate the eye shadow. And the hair. I feel like I could have been ok with the outfit if it wasn’t for the hair and makeup.

  • SewingSiren

    Walk like an Egyptian…

  • formerlyAnon

O.k. I like the ensemble on her, a lot. I respect her commitment to make-up, but it does look Day of the Dead, with a bit of a sci-fi dead android feel picked up (for me) from the outfit. She needed LIPS and maybe a streak of eye shadow that extended out of the eye socket.

    Commence rant:

This looks more like David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust -ish, but not really) who never had a punk period to speak of. During the mid-late ’70s I remember him in photos with the Ramones and Bowie (I think he was touring in support of the album “Station to Station”) looked like a cross between a lounge lizard and somebody who’d just stopped by on the way home from the tennis club compared to the Ramones & their posse.

I could be wrong, makeup is not my thing. But I don’t remember ANY substrand of punk doing exaggeratedly strong eyes and virtually no lip. No-one. 5 minutes ladies. All it would take is 5 minutes – 15 if you don’t actually remember the names of any punk bands – Googling. If she’d nailed a punk-era make up & some referential hair, she’d have made this ensemble sing. To be explicit: punk girls going out at night usually wore A FUCK TONNE of makeup. Eyeliner top & bottom, mascara, deep red lips was the easiest combo. Dark, elaborate eye shadow next. Some subgroups wore heavy pancake-style foundation, not the majority that I remember. Some (political/artistic ones who worshipped at the Altar of Patti Smith), didn’t wear much makeup – they’d do only eyeliner and minimal mascara & maybe minimal eyeshadow. Not much lip color, or maybe none. I don’t know what was wrong with this crew at the Met.

  • The outfit is okay, but oy, the eye makeup!!! And the hair is too severe.

  • H-A-T-E the hair, hate the makeup, not thrilled with the dress. She (along with many other ladies) REALLY needed lipstick.

  • lilyvonschtupp

LOVE the makeup. Especially love all the clippings on the one ear.

  • gracedarling

LOATHE the eye makeup. She looks so gorgeous with a completely bare face, but failing that, a slash of orange lipstick would have called attention to her great teeth and punched up the punk factor as well. She’s also got the bone structure for some really tall hair, so slicking it down just seems like a wasted opportunity.

  • Pennymac

There is not enough time in the day to list all that’s wrong with this.

  • MzzPants

I like the eye makeup better on her than on Ginnifer Goodwin. Can’t really articulate why.

  • Anniebet

Detach the head and the outfit is pretty cool. The head is so wrong for so many reasons, not least the fact that her teeth show when she’s not smiling, and it’s scary.

  • pattycap11

if looking like a ghoul is the idea, she’s rockin’ it.

  • Imasewsure

I think the makeup works but not in close up (scary as duly noted). Nothing says punk here either but it’s not dull at least

  • SophieCollier

That hair plus the deer-in-the-headlights expression is hilarious.

  • ankali

Huh, I was just thinking that she totally has the bone structure to pull off that hair. Re: the whole look, I can see trying-too-hard, but regardless she looks great. This is from a chronic over-dresser, though.

  • I hate the peplum bit in the front.

  • mrsshankly

“I was working as a waitress at a cocktail bar…that much is true” The Human League song popped in my head as I was pondering the eye makeup.

  • Sally Brownson

That eye makeup with that hair makes her head look like a skull. If she’d gone for big drag queen hair, it might’ve worked.

  • Deedles

She looks like Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s kid sister…

  • I definitely think it is too much eye make-up but she wears it so much better than Ginnifer Goodwin.

  • imspinningaround

Yes. This is when “panda eyes” goes bad. The reason the India-inspired Chanel pre-fall 2012 panda eyes worked was because the shadow didn’t go from the lashes to the brow, just to the brow bone.

  • carnush

I love it, but I agree with you on the hair. Would’ve been better to wear it down and sleek-looking. Also, you guys rock for doing all these Met Gala posts. You deserve an ice cream.

  • RebeccaKW

I do like this look, but agree it’s a little…unexciting for the event. I like the makeup on her, but agree the hairstyle is not the best choice.

  • oohsparkley!

I love the last picture that has a nice super-hero vibe. The eye makeup and hair work in the 3/4 shots. Overall I respect the effort.

  • MsC

The hair and makeup accentuate the Skeletor-ness of her face.

  • The eye make-up does not look punk. It just looks amateur. Should have been dialed back and done something edgier with the hair or jewelry.

  • I think if you’re going to do this kind of eye makeup, you have to go much more balls-out cray-cray with the rest of the outfit. A slightly unusual cut on your dress/pant/thing and slicked-back hair isn’t enough. It just makes you look like you hired the wrong gay for your makeup. Whereas an outlandish dress and big hair might have balanced it better. In other words, commit to your look or don’t bother.

    • MilaXX

      Exactly! Balls to the wall.

  • thecitysleeps

I think this looks great. Not in love with the make up with that hair though.

  • It’s Cleopatra meets something really really ugly.

  • tereliz

If there was more skirt here, like what Nina Dobrev (I think) wore, I might like this more. It would be more dramatic. As is, all the drama is in her hair and makeup, and it’s too severe. Great color on her, though.

  • ellabob

The make up looks like she got into her mothers stash and thought she was doing it right! I still does not disguise her teeth…

  • Cute. Not punk, but maybe a little New Wave at least. Needed a bouffant.

  • All these chiquitas with the faux Siouxsie Banshee eyes – they look like they’ve all borrowed Tom Brady’s black goo that he wears under his eyes on the football field during sunny days, and just slapped it on their eyelids while they were waiting to walk the RC.

  • MarissaLG

Too much makeup, but I looove this look. Probably one of my favorites from the night.

  • The outfit is cute and fun (if a bit underdone) but her eye makeup is probably the worst execution of smoky eye I’ve seen from this event, and that’s saying something.

  • ZnSD

Yeah, you can’t wear eye makeup like that without large false eyelashes. Oh, and a penis.

  • Melissa Brogan

She’s on my irrational hate list, but I have to give her props for making an effort when so many ladystars phoned it in for this year’s gala. Hate her hair/makeup though.

  • Kristy Evans

I think the makeup would have been better served with some big ass hair. Messy, frizzy, closer to God hair.

  • shelley514

The eyeshadow looks hideous. And the bracelet and clutch are wrong for this look.

  • annrr

That eye make up is way too Frank N Furter. She looks like she is ready to do the Time Warp. again.

  • kathrineb

Tight center part not her friend. The eye makeup may be bold but I feel intense hatred towards it. I remember when barbies had this sort of eye makeup…

  • kaycem

the only person i’ve seen lately who can pull off the smoky-from-lashes-to-brows thing is khaleesi.

  • musicandmochi

    I thought Black Swan, myself.

  • All this eye makeup makes me so nostalgic for my halcyon goth youth…
