Met Gala IN or OUT: Cameron Diaz in Stella McCartney

Posted on May 07, 2013

Never judge an outfit by its thumbnails, darlings. That’s going to go in our book of aphorisms, Opinionated Tom & Fabulous Lorenzo’s Almanac.

See, we thought we were going to trash this outfit for looking severe and matronly.

Cameron Diaz attends the 2013 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in Stella McCartney.

But when you zoom in on the details, we find that her face looks lovely, the gown is stunning, and that belt is ridiculously kickass. Clearly, Miss Cameron doesn’t want to spend the evening hugging people. And for an event like this, which is Fashion Bitch Central and attitude is required just to get near the front door? That kind of touch is golden.

Vote Now!

IN! 21st Century Hitchcock Bitch with an Edge!

OUT! Isn’t that dress more Helen Mirren than Cameron Diaz?

Solange’s Tits n’ Awning dress failed to excite the kittens, who voted it OUT.

In! It’s a cool but restrained look

  • Loving it… total IN!

  • DinaSews

    Oh so IN!

  • In-love the color and it’s event appropriate.

  • MilaXX

IN! I like it and it works with the theme.

  • lalahartma

    In, for sure!

  • Diego!

    Love love love; IN!

  • sablehunter

IN, but should have gone up a size. The puckering is distracting from an otherwise beautiful dress.

    • AmandaCathleen

This x1,000. If that skirt fit her properly, this would hands-down be a WERQ. Still IN for the understated drama, but it could’ve been flawless.

  • formerlyAnon

  • decormaven

I wish there was a wristlet or adornment at the neck that was as equally as fierce as that belt. That belt is kicking.

    • drdarke

I was on the fence, but that belt pushes it to IN.

  • M Fox

In! She looks amazing. Also, I’m pregnant and I think one of those spiky belts would be perfect for keeping all the belly touchers far, far away.

  • Tigrrl

I’ll say IN, with the tiny criticism that I hate spider leg mascara, and those look like tarantula legs they’re so out there. False eyelashes if you need it to stand out, but that there is just messy looking.

  • Spreecord

IN. Bitch looks so good I’m even able to forgive that she’s wearing Stella McCartney.

    • Right?! I’m shocked that I like something from Stella.

    • conniemd

So restrained for Stella. In, also captures the essence of punk with a demure looking dress with that kickass belt. So unexpected and jarring.

  • IN. She was one of the few who actually seem to have gotten the memo with “Punk” theme.

  • Sobaika

IN – one of my favorites from the Gala.

  • OrigamiRose

IN. Punk Audrey Hepburn in “Always.”

  • StrandedFashionista

She looks pretty damn fabulous and refreshingly covered up compared to the rest of the looks you’ve shown us thus far. VERY IN.

  • estella_nyc

Hmm, I only like the belt, so OUT.

  • Sarah

I think she looks gorgeous, and that color is fabulous. Nice nod with the belt, but I wish she hadn’t matched it to her eyelashes.

  • Lizzyisi

In! I’d rather see it on someone I am a fan of, but it’s perfect for the occasion and looks really good on her.

  • Perditax

In, but mainly because i love the image of her impaling lesser beings on her belt spikes

  • eowyn_of_rohan

I absolutely love it. Even if it hadn’t had the spike belt. It’s a gorgeous color, dramatically but simply cut, and she is giving great face.

  • In, but almost an out because any dress that can give one of the fittest bodies in Hollywood a belly pooch, is a fail. However, the color is stunning, the face is gorgeous and the belt is on the mark.

  • AndresB

IN. This is exactly the kind of fierce and ironic touch needed when wearing a beautiful but arch-classical dress.
The belt manages to be punk too, basically a spiked ‘Nancy & Sid’ dog collar wrapped around the waist: Inspired, cheeky choice for this occasion.

  • A Savarese

Beautiful woman, dress ..yawn… i want to see the back. I want to see under the shawl…there has to be something FABULOUS no? no.

  • Melizmatic

Punk done very subtly, although I’m not loving the too severe hair or mascara.

    The belt is beyond kickass.

Now… can we PLEASE talk about Drag Race???

    • zenobar

YES PLEASE. I keep hitting Refresh in hopes that we’ll get to the Shit That Matters (To Me).

      • Melizmatic

For reals; I’m like a total meth addict right now, replete with twitching and all… hitting the little circle icon repeatedly, salivating like one of Pavlov’s dogs, at the mere idea of the post I’m waiting for…

  • For some reason Cameron looks OLD with her hair pulled back like this. She needs bangs or something. Or the color of her skin with her hair doesn’t look right. I think the dress color is extreme for her. The belt is cool.

  • elizonthelam

  • MoHub

It’s like cracking open the door on an iron maiden.

  • Absolute In

  • RMJ

IN IN IN. It’s striking and event-appropriate, conservative and risk taking. It’s more mature than I thought was in her wheelhouse, but it’s also fierce and she looks super into how she looks. Mirren could totally wear this, but Mirren is awesome and rocks the red carpet with greater frequency than Diaz, so if she’s Cammie’s new role model, I approve.

  • Total IN, but I’m not loving the hair. That shade of Gatorade Lemon-Lime should be retained by the beverage company and not Cameron. Period.

  • Introspective

*gorgeous*. that blue makes her eyes look even more beautiful. the belt is hot and on point with the punk memo. this dress looks fantastic on her.

plus I like that it does less of the young ingenue thing she’s worked to death and more of the fashionable grown woman cammie needs to be at this stage.

    ETA so, so IN

  • VioletFem

IN. I love it! That dress is stunning and frankly there are not many places where a celebrity could wear this dress, but the Met Gala is definitely in.

  • She’s saying “Come make love to me mere mortals. But it will cost you.”

  • NO NO NO NO NO. Honestly I hated everything about this look. Can you tell?

  • crash1212

    IN. I want that belt.

  • The fit is a little funny in the skirt but despite that, very much IN.

  • LuisaNL

very supervillainess-esque, I like it! Bit tight across the hips and hate the hair but, still, it’s an IN for me!

  • roble ridge

    BOOM bitches! She’s an IN.

  • bxbourgie

In! That belt rocks and this blue is my favorite color.

  • Alyssa

In! The belt gives it just enough edge…and she didn’t feel the need to flash us her business to look “punk”.

  • AViewer44

Love it, conceptually and practically. But I just wish it weren’t pulling so much across her belly! That’s all I can see.

  • In_Stitches

Obviously IN, it’s like a habit for a nun who worship’s Satan.

  • surfergirl70

I just wish it fit her better. She’s in amazing shape, yet the dress is pulling across the belly and makes her look poochy where she clearly isn’t. But I concur that it’s a fierce look. Begrudging IN.

  • imspinningaround

SO in. Beautiful color and the belt is truly punk glorious.

  • RuthGo

Out, even with the touch of punk at the waist, I just think the whole thing is incredibly aging.

  • SewingSiren

    IN! Underplayed yet highly effective.

  • IN.

  • Judy_S

IN. The quiet dress + the crazy belt, very witty.

  • IN! She looks classy and fierce all at the same time!

  • gabbilevy

IN! She ignored the theme and went straight for Sci Fi Ice Queen… like if Tippi Hedren starred in an early Star Trek.

…or maybe I’m just really excited for Into Darkness.

  • procrastinatrice

OUT. I completely disagree that her face looks lovely here. Shitty, aging make up job. The dress is cool, but I can’t not focus on the disaster above. They made her cheeks look like bags and gave her more wrinkles than she has.

  • LJCdoc

Out. I really only like the belt. When you look at her from only above the waist, it looks like her boobs are hanging down past her ankles. And the skirt doesn’t fit.

  • I wish I had an occasion ever in my life that called for such a belt. Keeping unwanted people away at a distant-relative’s wedding?
    And, IN

  • Clara

    IN! love it!!

  • Janet B

  • IN, but I’d like to see how it looks without the cape. And what is it with the lighting? Why does every blonde look like she has orange hair?

    • In_Stitches

I figured that was because everyone freshly bleached their hair to fit the theme. Can’t wear ripped denim to the ball? Than Billy Idol up that hair.

  • IN

  • IN. Based solely on that awesome belt.

  • Royal blue, spikes, and a cape? So very IN.

  • RoxieRider

Super In, borderline WERQ. She looks fierce and unusual and she’s rocking it. A little more hair fierceness was called for.

  • MarissaLG

SO IN. She is giving me DRAMA. Love it.

  • fringebenefit

IN. Just the right touch of punk, unlike other guests who completely ignored the fine print on the invite.

  • jennifervney

In! Best she’s looked in ages and theme appropriate to boot.

  • Jellybish

    Perfection. IN.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

IN! And T-LO, you stated it perfectly, “21st Century Hitchcock Bitch with an Edge!”.

  • twocee

In. Love it from head to toe.

  • Stubenville

In. Three snaps in a Z formation.

  • carnush

    Don’t stand
    Don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me.

    LOVE it. She looks fierce!

oh hell yes. She looks outstanding.

  • Judging only the dress, IN.
I must confess I see this gown for an award’s Red Carpet… with belt included.

  • IN, and I can’t believe I’m saying that about Cameron Diaz, but yes. The only problem is the belt and that I can overlook.

  • flamingoNW

    Awesome. IN

  • lilibetp

Looks like she’s trying to play Grace Kelly as a futuristic assassin. Doesn’t really work for me.

  • Imasewsure

No this is awesome once you get a look at it. IN

  • Moondancer5

I think Helen would have vetoed that lack of cleavage…

  • ojosazules

  • SugarSnap108

IN. A belt that doubles as an abdominal weapon is pretty cool. And her eyes look amazing.

  • TSkot

    She looks dynamite: IN

  • mozzer0906

out, she looks like an 80 old Grandmother of the bride from afar.

  • RebeccaKW

In. She looks great, regardless of the venue. LOVING that belt.

  • OUT Duckface looks like a scary nun and it’s not because of the belt.

  • OUT. It made me say “ouch” just to look at it. I hope she didn’t hug any one.

  • maggiemaybe

    Oh yes.

  • rissa42210

    In! Loves!

  • Synnamin

IN! I can’t stand her (IHS), but she looks fantastic

  • aeb1986

She dressed perfectly for this event and theme. Definitely an IN. My only issue is with her hair color. Did she color it for this event or is she trying to add some red? It looks off somehow

  • LaSylphide

In, unless there’s a gigantic, visible zipper on the back.

  • another_laura

IN – I like it! I would really like it if they let it out about 1 inch at the hips, but that’s a quibble.

  • That color is gorgeous on her. If the belt sat maybe an inch or two lower on her waist the whole thing would’ve been perfect.

  • It’s like a REVERSE Monet!

  • Nicely done, Miss Cameron! IN.

  • I really don’t like the hidden arms effect of the cape (?), but that belt… IN

  • jw_ny

IN. If she didn’t have that “kick ass” belt on, it’d been an out.

  • An IN for me! Too bad she’s not as interesting as a celebrity/actress as she looks here…this whole thing is Dietrich 2013.

  • teensmom99

IN. She should wear that color more!

  • GorgeousThings

That belt looks like it’s made from the remnants of the Iron Throne. Closest to punk of any of the actresses so far, and I love it with the restrained look of the gown.

  • In… her eyes are beautiful!

  • IN! She looks freaking fantastic!

  • gsk241

I love it, and I seriously WANT that anti-hugging belt! IN!

  • jmorino08

If Anna Wintour had shown up in this, it would be kick ass. I expect more from Cammy! OUT!

  • Hetha Innis

This is gasp worthy badassery! LOVE it.

  • korilian
  • Kathryn Wyman

In! She looks fresh, and the belt detail is awesome.

  • Aly Light

Whew, that it awesome. IN. I’m surprised we’re voting on this.

  • CatherineRhodes

    OUT. Hideous.

  • random_poster

In! Love the dress color, and the belt is totally right for the venue.

  • alyce1213

A bit too tight and the stabby belt is just ridiculous (and dangerous-looking), but otherwise very dramatic and stunning on her.
    Great color.

  • IN. She looks badass and was one of the few people who stylishly nailed the theme. Love it.

  • LOVE. THIS. The color is stunning, her makeup looks fabulous, and THIS is when you deploy the slicked back hair. The whole look is giving off a futuristic, sci-fi vibe, with a little dash of punk thrown in with the belt. *IN.*

ETA: I had to go back up to confirm… I actually like a Stella McCartney dress!!

  • Someone please get Tabatha that belt. She’ll never have to hug anyone again.

  • DeTrop

IN. She looks great and the belt made it Punk. Love the clutch and the hair.

BTW, the first picture – UGH.

  • I like the look, but more importantly – who is that cutie behind her in the first picture? Young androgynous David Bowie

  • In. Hug your enemies, Cam.

  • MsKitty

That belt screams “personal space, bitches!” An IN just for that.

  • IN, soooo chic. a mix between charlize and queen cate b. !

  • Beverly Kozma

    Mass-SCARE-a. She looks good, though.

  • IN! elegance with an edge.

  • Love-Love-Love!! The belt is synergistic to the look. Severe and unapologetic, all of it. My favorite look by far.

  • IN. Love it.

  • Louise Bryan

Sorry, but it’s an OUT from me. There’s too much dress and not enough punk. The belt even, reads more goth than punk to me. Not to mention the dress makes her look like an old lady, especially with the slicked down hair. AND the dress is a wee bit too small.

  • Sally Brownson

Out. I don’t understand how you guys like her face like this, it looks ghoulish to me.

  • anotherkate

Stella got one right! She looks stunning. IN!

  • She probably impaled someone last night. Which, at the met gala, is a good thing. IN!

  • H2olovngrl

    Clearly, she came stag…

  • Anne At Large

Very mother of dragons to me somehow. In a good way.

  • In In In!

  • sweetlilvoice

In for the dress color alone. And I’d like to borrow that belt for my next family event!

  • Tatiana Luján

  • In!

  • In! She’s working some original Star Trek here (in a very good way).

  • Out. Meh.

  • MzzPants

IN, DAMMIT! Modern, sleek, and smokin’ hot. Gwynnie should take note.

  • In!

  • IN! So cool. HAs punk elements but not over the top… which can’t be said for many of the other attendees.

  • In- I like the details- like placid and cool- then BAM, but it’s a touch too tight- why can’t they just have the right size??!?!

  • Allison

IN. That is some evil queen fierceness.

  • Carole Scofield

    In in in.

  • Instead of having the “punk” dog collar around her neck it was reinterpreted as a belt and I love it. Punk was never about being sexy so even the cover up nature of this works.

  • Rrroza

Ha! That belt is brilliant and the rest is elegant. IN

  • luluransom

    IN IN IN!

  • Barbora

    Huge IN

  • Contralto

    OUT. Hate.

  • IN. I don’t care if it’s a bit matronly, it looks great.

  • In. Very unexpectedly awesome.

  • E. D.

    I love it!

  • Jacqueline

IN! One of my faves of the night. Reminds me of that white Tom Ford cape number Gwynnie wore to the Oscars a few years back. Except badass.

  • ampg

Too bad about the pulling in the skirt, but definitely still IN.

  • In! She is a fierce studded screen siren!

  • samo_samo

IN! I can’t exactly put my finger on why I really like this look, but I do. Maybe it’s the hair that keeps this from looking matronly. Whatever it is the overall look is definitely working.

  • Glammie

IN. I love the belt and the way she’s not desperately flaunting body parts. This reminds me of the old Cameron who wore quirky things and didn’t give a damn.

  • zelavie

    Absolute IN!

  • Nonmercisansfacon

    Well done.

  • nannypoo

A concealed weapon. I love it.

  • Corsetmaker

Stylish interpretation of the brief… it works in a rather un-cameron like way. Love the belt 😀

  • librarygrrl64

IN. best she has looked in a while. That belt is amazing.

  • sagecreek

  • Best she’s looked in a long time. That color is brilliant on her and really brings out her eyes. Also, nary a bump in sight! Chic and sleek = IN, with spiky attitude/belt.

  • myristica_fragrans

    i freaking loved this.

  • IN!

  • I actually thought she was the only person in a gown that did the theme well… IN

  • In!! Chic and fierce and striking and fun all at the same time.

  • So many in votes but I hate it. Her hair is too severe/wrong colour, can’t stand we makeup and I don’t really think the dress is all that attractive. Also, can’t stand the belt; it’s a weapon. OUT

  • Anathema_Device

In. Very chic and literally sharp.

  • IN. Love the look head to toe, and the belt is a perfect little touch of punk (well, when you do punk at a gala, that is).

  • phrenk

    That is awesome. IN.

  • bd73

love it, although i can easily paltrow or blanchett in it. but the theme was punk rock, and i’d have thought if anyone would get in the spirit it would be cameron diaz.

  • Benjamin Cucu

Obviously IN she looks stunning here!

  • IN. It reminds me of Queen Maxima’s dress last week.

  • Out. It’s a weird dress and I don’t think she’s pulling it off. It really does nothing for her figure. Also, that belt looks like a weapon of mass destruction. I think it’s just too much look for her.

  • IN. kickass. and i want the belt so i don’t have to hug people. bad mood belt.

  • IN. This is dramatic and works with the theme.

  • Anniebet

OUT. Can’t get on the bandwagon here. She looks way too constricted and stiff. Besides, it’s Stella McCartney, purveyor of clown pants.

  • GTrain

  • Call me Bee

Yes–the skirt is a tad tight at the hip, but that’s a minor quibble. IN!

  • MissMariRose

  • quiltrx

OUT. One, I hate her irrationally; two, hair and makeup look like she’s an android in some cliche’ space movie; three, the dress looks like Anna Wintour is going to pick up her lifetime achievement award.
But that belt kicks the entire Internet’s ass.

  • ferngilly

    In! She looks fantabulash.

  • filmcricket

On the upside, great colour, shape, belt. On the downside, nothing remotely punk about the dress itself, and Stella clearly just stole this from Tom Ford, which is why it doesn’t suck. Still, Cammy looks fab. In, I guess.

  • filmcricket

On the upside, great colour, shape, belt. On the downside, nothing remotely punk about the dress itself, and Stella clearly just stole this from Tom Ford, which is why it doesn’t suck. Still, Cammy looks fab. In, I guess.

  • j_anson

    IN. Love it.

  • Sadie-Ann

Out. The Cape and the belt hitting at the same place look like something is exploding to me.

  • BrooklynBomber

In except for the fit below the waist. But in.

  • alebaby

she is one of the most unclassy ladies ever…. at least we can’t see her chewing gum…

  • MandyM

IN! No question! She has one of the best looks I’ve seen from this event.

  • MaryAtRealityTea

  • IN. She better WERQ! For some reason this made me think of Dune’s Bene Gesserit.

  • luciaphile

  • ankali

IN, IN, IN! I LOVE that belt! Brilliant to wear something like that at a crowded venue; it’s like talking to yourself on the train to make sure you get a seat all to yourself!

  • jetpackdino

A reluctant out for me. The dress and the belt don’t relate to each other. She does look lovely in that color though.

  • kimiakay

Out for me. The front “cape”? doesn’t go with the belt, for me, nor does her hair. Her face is beautifully done, though.

  • In…but I’d rather see it on Tilda Swinton

  • kaycem

hate the hair, but everything else is mega IN for me, y’all.

  • kay

iunno… in? gofugyourself did a post for the met ball about people who looked like they were dressed up in the middle ages, and I feel like this is where this fits. Like a more 21st century morgan le fay or something

  • Colin

Makeup and hair are wonderful and all, but consider what Cameron has been doing lately; sexxed up esquire shoots and the like. She’s trying to enter her forties with a public image of still being hot, young and fresh. Recognizing that, I don’t know why capes were even a consideration.

  • elemspbee

IN. this is edgy, clean, fierce, futuristic.

  • The seams in this dress make me so angry–what the hell is up near the near the neckline? Why is she wearing a ponte tube dress TO THE MET GALA?

  • JauntyJohn

  • Oh, so in. That crazy belt is crazy. Good crazy. And that colour likes her.

  • all kinds of IN. i don’t think its matronly at all. severe maybe, but i think it has a mysterious sexiness to it. and that belt is to DIE for!

  • bellafigura1

IN. But I wish the hair was down. But IN!

  • mhleta

IN. Understated, but deadly. This is Punk Couture.

  • In–that is an outfit with a story to tell, and I want to hear it.

  • thecitysleeps

IN IN IN. Perfect interpretation of punk, without being literal. Love the belt, and that colour is stunning.

  • I hate Cameron Diaz but this is in, totally, totally in.

  • EEKstl

IN. That combo of elegance and danger is compelling. And that color is killer on her.

  • tereliz

IN. Love that color. The belt is a great little nod to the theme and her head looks great.

  • Kristy Evans

IN. Although she may have wanted to go up a size. That skirt is tiiiight (and not in the cool hip-hop way).

  • Vaniljekjeks

    I don’t care WHO I impale… I want that belt.

  • IN I love it.

  • Christine

I think the dress would look better on Helen Mirren.

  • Tracy_Flick

IN! But I agree with the others who said “go up a size”.

  • TyrannolaurusRex

In! However, I have to admit that I wish her hair were darker.

  • is it too late to give a verdict? IN mofos and you haters best watch yo’self on the way out da door

  • OMG

  • Melissa Brogan

In! She made an effort, so that’s a start. And I like that her version of punk didn’t rely on eye makeup.

  • bitterk

    Love the belt

  • andreawey

“Clearly, Miss Cameron doesn’t want to spend the evening hugging people.” HAHAHA!
