Met Gala: Florence Welch in Givenchy

Posted on May 08, 2013

We can’t actually say we like this all that much, but it works as an over-the-top costume or bit of stagewear.

Florence Welch attends the 2013 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in Givenchy couture.

Beyonce went the stagewear route too, but in her case, her patented flashiness just didn’t translate well to the venue. Flo looks … not chic so much as … appropriate. And appropriately her, we suppose we’d say.

But we reiterate: it doesn’t mean we like it. And those boots are fucking ugly.

She looks great and seems to have read the memo. Weird dress for sure but Flo brings it home.

    • hughman

      “SING RHIANNON!” *holds up lighter*

    • thecitysleeps

It looks so heavy and skeavy. Do not like this at all, I feel like I need to go outside for some fresh air just looking at her.

      • 3boysful

The bodice is terribly unflattering to someone with a chest.

    • fiddlecub

I feel terrible for saying this, since I usually root for her and used to adore her fashion, but–I am kind of over it. I don’t mind the kind of out-there looks she favors, but there’s something so literally Stevie Nicks about it all. But Stevie looked much more put together and thoughtful; she truly knew her look. I am glad Flo is embracing fashion that is right for her, but I never feel like she takes that extra step for the oomph she needs. It’s not good enough to just put on an edgy gown and call it a day. Stevie did it better, and Flo isn’t doing anything to make it her own.

    • Sarah

I think it’s pretty cool, but then again I’m a hardcore fantasy novel reader and she looks like my idea of a badass sorceress. I do think, for the purposes of this event, she shoulda done something with her hair. She never does an updo, I guess, but this outfit called for one.

    • GorgeousThings

Crow formalwear in Game of Thrones.

    • annabelle archer

Florence does her best impression of a crow.

    • Sara Leigh Merrey

She seems to have confused goth with punk. Not liking this at all. The Stevie Nicks references are spot on though.

    • annabelle archer

I am reading GOT, not watching, but yes, this feels like it would be very at home on the series.

    • Deb_Lynn

Yes skeavy, like she’s attending Macho Man Randy Savage’s funeral….

    • Angelo

So so so much better than what she wore to the Met gala last year (google it for a laugh, I don’t know how she sat down, or fit through the doors). And please don’t hate me for actually liking the boots.

    • Rand Ortega

It’s “Flo Punk”. Punk as interpreted as distinctly Flo Welch. I don’t particularly like it, but I give her props for staying true to her style oeuvre.

    • NC_Meg

Yes! I couldn’t help but think of Stevie Nicks!

    • MilaXX

      Looks like walking depression

    • nannypoo

      One word, Florence: blusher.

    • bluefish

All in all, looks like the great House of Givenchy had a kinda lousy night. Lots of ugly gowns — this among them. She looks awful — hair too. You are too kind!

      • Christopher McCann

I know, right? The gown, as modeled by Maria, is stunning. Florence’s gown looks like a cheap copy.

    • Gaby

Why is practically everyone either nude-faced or half-painted? There’s way too much nude makeup on this red carpet and it’s starting to piss me off.

    • Courtney St. Julian

I’ve often wondered what happens to a dress like this after it’s worn on the red carpet? I can’t see a market for this. I can’t even imagine the woman that would have the taste and matching bank account to purchase this. So, where does it go? Couture Goodwill?

      • MilaXX

It will get some use in editorials. My guess is a lot gets archived. It’s not like they make more than a few of the dresses to begin with.

    • quiltrx

I may be wrong for it, but I’m kind of loving this. (not the boots though….yeesh) She’s sort of a goth/medieval/nouveau crow-lady…which totally works if you’re Florence Welch.
(and I’m glad she’s toned down the stage-ish makeup lately, BUT could have used a bit more with this I think. And maybe a more attention-getting hairstyle.)

    • ojosazules

A big black sack of shredded horror.

    • bellafigura1

Big ick, she looks like a crow.

    • louised

I don’t get Stevie Nicks from this at all. Stevie was all feathers and scarves and rags. This dress has a much harder edge to it, fringe and all. I don’t love it either, but as T-Lo said, it is appropriate, at least. I think it would have had much more of an effect if she’d done something with her hair and makeup. Also, sandal-boots are a big NO for me.

      • foodycatAlicia

Me either. It’s a bit more glam rock. She could wear this for next years Marc Bolan-themed ball with some platforms.

    • CarolinLA

She looks like the stand-in for Barnabas Collins’ daughter.

    • Candice Booth

Love love love that 70’s witchy L.A. Woman vibe the model in that dress is giving off. On Florence it just makes her look a little stumpy and we all know how tiny she really is. That fringe back is fantastic.

    • Melanie K. Morgan

Stevie Nicks called; she wants her outfit back.

    • Judy_S

I love this. Esp. when I found a pic of her twirling to get the fringe going.

      • alyce1213

She did the same dance with her dress at last year’s ball. I guess it’s her thing.

    • pulpytomato

On the model, this looks interesting and slightly regal (in a Game of Thrones kind of way). On Flo, it mostly looks like something died on her.

    • jmorino08

Open toed boots? Why do these exist?

    • Chris

She looks like the Hawk man from the second season of Buck Rogers.

    • Victoria Pavlova

Don’t like the getup much but her face looks much younger and fresher than usual and I am saying that as a multiple-years-Flo-fan

    • Stubenville

      From the back, Cousin It.

    • bxbourgie

I thought the same thing. House Welch!

    • decormaven

Didn’t Andre Leon Talley wear a similar fringed robe/cape or jacket in The September Issue? I get that kind of vibe from this outfit.

    • ringthing

She looks hot. Not sexy hot, but “oh my god I’m sweltering in here” hot. All that hair and velvet and…stuff. Ick.

    • PrunellaV

If she could just stand all night in the pose at the bottom of the stairs, it would be a stunning look.

    • alyce1213

Extravagant witch costume. She needs to do something with her hair already, it’s dismal and brings down her looks.

    • funwithpurses

Would have worked (& rocked) in any other color. Black megafringe is too witchy.

    • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

This is awful, from head to open toed boots.

    • JauntyJohn

      Morticia goes grocery shopping.

    • Kim Brightman

She got off better than KK and Bey in Givenchy.

    • Raanky

      J’adore this on her! Ahh-mazing…

      • Raanky

Fringe in Givenchy. I love it.

    • Anne

Yes. It’s so very brother (sister) of the nights watch, isn’t it? But it’s Flo. So it works. More punk than goop’s candy pink.

    • Beth Ann

When I look at this, I think of Visigoth Queen Brunhilda filtered through rock ‘n’ roll.

    • formerlyAnon

Titania, formerly-Queen, now EMPRESS of the fairies attends the Met Gala.

    • drdarke

The cape is nice, @thecitysleeps:disqus – but everything else looks like Brienne’s armor on GAME OF THRONES.

    • akprincess72

Ann & Nancy Wilson called, they want their dress back…

    • Tracy Walker

Steven Tyler wore this at an Aerosmith concert. Behind it I cannot get.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

But at least her face looks softer. It is very Flo, even if i don’t love it.

    • janinedm

Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

    • RedRaven617

I agree with TLo. Overall “meh”. But I bet it looks more interesting when she moves.

    • DeTrop

Would have loved this (sans the open-toed boots) in a deep purple. Black is so expected. She has her Punk on – dead eyes, limp hair – Oh My.

    • FloridaLlamaLover

      Game. Of. Thrones.

    • Susan Collier

That’d be perfect for the Fleetwood Mac Gala at the Met.

    • jetpackdino

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to my mother’s basement. I will be your Dungeon Master for the evening and we will be playing “Whispers of the Vampire’s Blade.” Take your seats around the table.

    • bitterk

      Unsuccessfully channeling Stevie Nicks

    • kathrineb

Sorry but this is indescribably UGLY and makes her look wide when she is anything but!
