Met Gala: Anne Hathaway in Valentino

Posted on May 07, 2013

We have to give Annie some credit. For a major female star at the top of her game, she’s surprisingly willing to fuck with her hair.

Anne Hathaway attends the 2013 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in a vintage Valentino couture gown.

We suppose the bleachout was her way of interpreting punk while still getting to wear a traditional gown. We don’t think it’s the best look for her, but we don’t mind it as a temporary thing. The gown works. It’s got just enough going on to keep it from being too traditional, although there’s really nothing “punk” about it.

But we don’t care who we piss off (because people actually get pissed off about such things), we can’t stand the Pinterest nails with a gown like this. We don’t care how popular they are, fashion historians are eventually going to look back on this period of clown nails paired with couture and not judge it kindly.

  • Not Punk in the least, but our Annie looks smashing, (except for the side boobage)

  • Golfkat

I was actually positively surprised by the hair. It makes her seem less pretentious, this sudden shedding of vanity. Maybe she should explore that a little. Might do her good.

It seems that last night was a night for the people I irrationally hate to get a little on my good side. I’m looking at you Anne H and Taylor Swift.

  • Golfkat

Side boob is the epitome of tacky- and unclassy-ness.

    • Spreecord

    • And honestly, this is more like side boob, under boob, cleavage boob, maybe even nipple boob. So really it’s just a lot of boob.

      • Its a lacy salute to mamms!

And hasn’t a significant part of filmography been about her getting a makeover, often focused on her hair? That princess movie thing when she went from curly-frizzy to smooth, the Prada movie where she went from vaguely hipster quirky bangs to stylish and polished, and of course the famous Fantine… Doesn’t seem that surprising to me a dye job is within the realm of what she’d do with it.

  • Amen to that! The Nail “Art” has to go!

  • MilaXX

This was a passable entry, although the hair is doing all the heavy lifting.

  • I can forgive the side boob here for some reason. She’s really pulling off the rest of the look. Bah, humbug on those nails. Wouldn’t a bright red have just KILLED with this look?

The hair–I’m getting an Annie Lennox vibe from it.

Love Mr. Valentino himself giving Annie the stink eye in that one photo. I can’t tell if he likes what he sees or not. He seems to always wear the same look of bemused tolerance when he’s photographed.

    • Golfkat

I don’t think he can move his face that much anymore. Too leathered up from suntanning and surgery. Okay, maybe that was too mean.

      • He’s lucky he’s ALIVE after all that suntanning. I’ve seen a lot of unfortunate patients battle melanoma; the sun is NOT your friend in large doses.

      • jetpackdino

Nah, it was the first thing I thought of too. “Why isn’t he smiling? Oh wait…”

    • DeborahJozayt

I bet Valentino paraded her around most of the night after the Oscar diss. Passive aggressive power play at work.

    • I thought of Annie Lennox, too.

    • Agree completely. This chick works my last nerve, but boy does she look terrific here. Shame about the nails.

  • I thought she (and Christina Ricci) did the best job of interpreting punk into fashion. It’s definitely not punk in the traditional sense, but it’s hardcore and I think she looks fantastic. I was sorely disappointed by the lack of McQueen, Balmain, Westwood, Gaultier, etc. Put a little effort in, jeez.

    • Daisy Walker

YES, where was the McQueen?! So disappointed.

      • imspinningaround

Everybody blew their collective McQueen wad in 2011 for Savage Beauty.

        • Daisy Walker

SJP should have kept the same accessories, but gone with a McQueen dress.

        • MissAmynae

true, but most of them went Sarah Burton McQueen, rather than Lee.

I would have loved for sjp to bring back the tartan gown she wore as his guest several years ago. tears would have been shed.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I don’t normally love McQueen or Westwood, but this is really the venue where the celebs ought to have hauled them out. I agree with you about Anne and Christina — think their outfits reflected the influence of punk on fashion and they both looked great. And Madge, your butt cheeks are not now and were not then, punk.

  • claudemtl777

The Pinterest nails are actually the punkest thing, no?

    • No.

      • SewingSiren

Well maybe, as in her stylist punk’d her.

      • claudemtl777

I’m not saying I like them…But back in the day I had a friend come back from a year in England with the whole punk look and attitude, and drug habit to match. (She was a cutter in 79!!) She’d spend hours painting her chewed up nails in a ladybug motif…

        • jetpackdino

Damn. Is she still alive? Did she manage to kick her habit?

          • claudemtl777

I doubt it, but who knows…She stayed in the dorms at college for one term, dropped out and we never heard from her again.

          • claudemtl777

But we thought she was Uber-stylish…

      • JosephLamour

Pinterest nails. Oh, you guys. (Two thumbs.)

    • Kimbolina

If you want to go classic punk for the nails, they’d probably be short with chipped black polish. Or just not done at all. And probably chewed.

      • Sarah

White-out and highlighters. That’s what we thought was punk-rock in the suburbs, anyway.

      • ballerinawithagun

That is what I was going to say!

      • Sunraya

Hey, then my chewed bare nails are tres punk!

  • Cathy S

I’m loving the hair and hating the side boob. She looks pretty great though.

  • SewingSiren

Well Valentino is not a name that springs to mind when I think of designers that have been influenced by punk. However with the right styling this could have been a little edge.

  • cmb123

Hate the nails, love the rest. I too was suffering from Annie fatigue, but I think she killed it. I LOVE the hair and the dress is Anne Hathaway edgy. Sure it’s not Madonna or Gwen Stefani edgy but it works for her. Way to go Anne!

  • Sobaika

I give her credit for at least attempting to incorporate something different (there was a whole lot of NOT punk last night) but would love this more if we hadn’t recently seen quite a few stars embrace a bleached short cut and do it better. As for the nails, there’s a way to go for the Pinterest look without being wacky and this isn’t it.

  • thecitysleeps

Those nails suck because she didn’t even try to make them punk. Put in some bordeaux colour or black at least. Love the dress, although it’s a bit too boobalicious for her since she has considerable boobage. But it’s a gorgeous dress, and I think it covers the whole “vampir-y punk” quite a bit.

  • I think she said she was inspired by Deborah Harry (for the blonde hair).

  • I quite like that it’s an Anne Hathaway interpretation of punk. She still looks like she’s relatively comfortable with what she’s wearing. I like her rings too – PTFO which I’m gonna guess stands for ‘Punk The Fuck Out’ but really could stand for absolutely anything 🙂

(And the nails – maybe that’s her homage to the DIY aspect of punk fashion!!!!)

  • i like her hair quite a lot, but shouldnt her make-up be brighter, especially the eyes and brows?
either that, or harsher, going all the way 80es.

as it is, it looks to me like her eyes and her do belong on different heads.

  • jetpackdino

If the hair had been lighter, a white-blonde? Coulda been punk. Coulda been a contender.

ETA: Is that Valentino himself in the back of the 4th shot? I wonder if that’s him pulling her away in the 5th, lol…

    • Donna Tabor

      It is him.

  • agreed! i even like the hair – it’s fun to look different once in awhile!

    • Kate

Agreed! Blonde Annie is as good (if not better???) than brunette Annie.

  • This was far and away one of my favorites of the night. So striking.

    • I completely agree! I like her interpretation of punk as well as Madge’s literal interpretation.

  • Connie Harbor

Looked like Valentino wasn’t sure he could trust the dress to be away from his watchful eye!

  • zenobar

This is far more “goth” than “punk”…and now I need to go listen to “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”

  • lobsterlen

Before I read your post my first thought …. the NAILS make them stop. Everything else looks stunning but from here on out if starlets have these stupid nails its an out for me.

  • cpjones79

This is Julia Roberts from the Oscars when she was nominated for Pretty Woman.

  • Nan

Hate the nails and the side-boo…, but LOVE the hair. Brava!

  • I really really love the hair! Think it’s great! And the dress is soooooo striking and amazing, but no to the nails!

    • RebeccaKW

I, too, like the hair on her. And I LOVE crazy nails, but I also know there is a time and a place. Girl should have gone with that black-red that was so popular in the 90’s.

    • NC_Meg

I was kind of floored just now looking at her nails. Who pairs Pinterest nails with Valentino?! (Even if the Valentino itself is questionable?!)

      • Amelia

The nails are ugly, but they appear to be leopard print, so I’m assuming that was her attempt to fit in with the “punk” theme

  • teensmom99

    She rocks a costume!

  • Gah. Underboob. No. Just no.

  • Beardslee

Why oh why do people always default to blonde??? I loved it that she kept her hair dark and then cut it short. It looks fine, but really, so trite.

    • VioletFem

I so agree! If she wanted a change, I would love for her to try out red hair instead.

  • formerlyAnon

Home-grown-harsh hair color is apparently her nod to punk. That and black. Smarter than a half-assed outfit and standard hair & makeup. Not a bad compromise for a young actress unwilling to forgo the glam.

  • FrigidDiva

Firmly agree on the nails. I would have loved this with just solid black polish.

  • Deedles

She looks terrifyingly like a Heigl doppelgänger.

  • carnush

I can’t with the nails. Ruins the whole look. Gross.

  • lizajane1776

I am generally not anti-fun nails (I am currently typing this very carefully because mine are drying before being turned into pieces of turquoise) but these are the WRONG NAILS. Punk would have been black or deep red, and likely chipped all to hell. So if you can’t handle the chipping, how about a nice Ruffian in dark colors? Pastels and neons were absolutely the wrong choice here.

Love the dress-homage to punk with the edges referencing the torn clothes- and love the hair. Works for her. Nice choice, hairstylist.

  • Tatiana Luján

She looks like she belongs to Roxette.

  • Stubenville

Nothing says “punk” like sheer and feathers.

  • Jecca2244

I love her hair. and she’s probably going to have it for a while. I don’t think you can dye it back and forth that much that quickly.

  • Sadie-Ann

I really wish the feathers were gone.

Also, super crazy nails wouldn’t be so bad if they were in colors that went with the outfit.

  • BrooklynBomber

Except for side-reveal and fingernails, she really, really looks fabulous. But what are Pinterist nails? This is the 2nd referent I’ve seen and I have no idea what it means.

    • golden_valley

If you go to the Pinterist site you’ll see nail “art” tons of photos of nails with blobs or dots or stripes or flowers in bold colors. I think girls like my 20 year old daughter started playing with nail polish like this when they were 13 or 14 and have continued to do so. Now it’s some a trend for those who wish to look perpetually adolescent.

      • BrooklynBomber

Thank you. I Googled “nail art” + Pinterist and I see what you’re talking about. So in a way it’s nothing new, right? That is, people have been decorating their nails like this for a long time, but it’s even more of a “thing” now because they’re putting pictures on Pinterist?

  • I really dig this dress.

  • I think she looks amazing, full stop.

  • amber_julene

“…fashion historians are eventually going to look back on this period of clown nails paired with couture and not judge it kindly.”

  • Can the Pinterest nails trend die already? Also: Anna Hathaway went Miley Cyrus. I actually kind of dig it, weirdly!

  • LOVE the Valentino photo bomb!

I actually really like the nails with this dress. It takes the whole look out of taking itself to seriously, which is refreshing to see when it comes to Mme Hathaway.

    • l_c_ann

He is just wondering if the dress seams will hold for fifteen more minutes.

      • Snailstsichr

My thoughts exactly. I am picturing him thinking, “I designed this for an A cup.”

  • i like the hair, dress is meh, side boob brings it down.

  • jw_ny

not crazy about the blonde hair, but give her credit for not always playing it safe. She does step out of the box quite often, and I appreciate that. This gown…idk…maybe more goth than punk, kind of tacky…but I rather like it for some odd reason.

  • Daisy Walker

Question for TLo–what makes something “vintage”? This look appears to be quite current, with the sideboob/underboob showing. Was this an old gown that was “updated”? Or is two or three seasons ago considered vintage?

    • sekushinonyanko

Apparently this gown is from 1992.

  • christinewithanx

All wish they were La Swinton. Many try. Most fail.

  • VioletFem

She looks amazing, even though I prefer her as a brunette, it is a very striking look. I actually don’t mind pinterest nails, but this particular nail job does not go well with this whole look.

  • kaycem

i love nail art, but THIS nail art in THESE colors looks horrendous with her gown. (that yellow looks bad on her, period, which is the main problem.) katy’s nails, on the other hand, are stunning and work perfectly with what she has on.

  • luluransom

    Pinterest nails ≠ punk.

  • GorgeousThings

The hair looks better on her from a distance than it does up close. I like it better than I would have thought. It cracks me up that Valentino is standing off and to the side, kinda like he was hired help.

    • He’s just making sure that she doesn’t switch dresses like she did at the Oscars when she was supposed to wear Valentino. I assume this Met Gala was her payback, and maybe THAT’S why its shockingly sheer, so as to be photographed/publicized to the max.

  • ballerinawithagun

One of the rare time I approve of side boob, I think they should have have made at least one fingernail tear in the mesh though…

Love Valentino in the background. Do you know what year this is from?

    • I wish I did. It can’t be that old though, considering the style. I love that the instant a garment in the couture is off season, it becomes “vintage”. Hilarious.

      • RedRaven617

I was just thinking the same thing! That dress couldn’t be more than 10 years old. If “antique” has to be over a hundred, then “vintage” should be closer to 50 and less than that is “retro”.

        • Unless they are applying the word in the same way as they do for wines, referring only to its year of production.

      • Golfkat

I think I read early 90s somewhere. The exact year is lost on me. My guess is ’92 or ’94.

      • maretha2

It’s 1992, so this dress is old enough to legally drink. This dress is actually 2 years older than the famous Elizabeth Hurley safety pin dress.

      • ballerinawithagun

I saw a post that said ’92 so I guess it is starting to fall into “vintage”. I despised Valentino in the ’80s. Was it L7 then? Maybe by the’90s he was starting to loosen up and looking at street influences.

A friend’s daughter told me she was wearing “vintage” Vera Wang to a party. I couldn’t comprehend…

    • The Fug Girls said in their live blog that it is from 1992.

  • aeb1986

I surprisingly love her hair like this. She looks great!

  • I assume the hair is bleached for yet another role that I will hate her in.

  • I think she looks pretty fierce, but I just can’t with the side boob. And the fact that the front panel of the dress is sheer. At least (I don’t think) you can’t see nipple. I love the hair, and her makeup looks good. I wouldn’t call these “Pinterest nails” though I *do* hate the mani.

  • That’s a lot of side boob, but her hair and makeup are on point.

  • CatherineRhodes

Agree completely on the “clown” nails for anyone other than a tween.

  • Melanie

I love her hair! Good for her.

  • shanteUstay

If a drag queen were wearing this, it would be fabulous!

  • Carla_Charlton

What’s up with the trend to Kim Novak/Vertigo hair? Not just on her — it seems to be everywhere. It’s so distinctive that when more than a couple of people have it, it starts to look tired.

  • the side boob is punk bitches!

    • DeTrop

Ah. Got it. But who knew she had such boobs. Go Annie!

      • Have you ever seen Love & Other Drugs? I mean, I could only get through the first half of it, but she was damn determined to make sure we all knew she had those things.

        • DeTrop

I haven’t seen it and thanks for letting me know not to waste my time.

  • shelley514

    I think she looks fantastic.

  • Sunraya

Waaaayyyyy too much boob. Love the gown, but a little more side coverage would have been less distracting.

  • Jennifer Coleman

If I were her, I would’ve just gone platinum. The blonde is okay, but not balls-out, Swintonesque.

    • maretha2

Depending on her hair texture, she might not be able to do platinum. I recently tried to go platinum but despite multiple attempts and mucho $$ to my fabulous stylist, my hair looked about the color of Anne’s here.

      • Glammie

I wonder if that’s what she was going for. Her base color is quite dark. Platinum was definitely the in-look if you were doing blonde at the time–i.e. Aimee Mann in “Voices Carry”.

I like the fact she tried though. Guess she figured that once she lopped it all off for Les Miz, she might as well have fun.

  • Hate. Anne, really? Miley Cyrus is your new role model?

  • kalisa

That’s a lot of boob, even for Blondie.

  • I actually think this is the best she’s looked in a while. I think the dress and hair look great. I like this Annie way better than the “oh, me?! Oscars campaign” Annie.

  • “Pinterest nails” !!! I am totally stealing that.

  • The nails make me want to cry. Otherwise, I like this a lot.

  • msdamselfly

She looks great! WIsh the happiness level was upped a bit, though, but , otherwise, brave and beautiful.

  • and “Gwennie”…

    • sagecreek

Yes. I actually said something nice about Gwennie today. I almost choked, but I did say it. That’s a nice dress.

  • tereliz

That is a LOT of sideboob, and I can’t stand the nails, but otherwise I think she looks confident and sexy. I hope the hair is just for a change of pace and not a role, because I love the idea that this is Anne’s evil twin. Anne is hanging out with the real Reece Witherspoon in an attic somewhere.

  • Kristy Evans

Serving up 90’s Sharon Stone realness. Except those nails, blech.

  • OMG!

This cut-out is so much better than Gwyneth’s cut-out. This is a crazy dress that requires some confidence and a body without fat. Anne is impressing me with this look because she has been so drab in the last six months. But….

She looks like she got on the Miley Cyrus train with her haircut and color.

  • I kind of love this because it reminds me of Debbie Harry. But the nails are Lisa Frank – meh.

  • ConnieBV

    Echoes of Carol Channing

  • decormaven

Little girls around age 11 or so are squeeing with delight over those nails. Aaargh….

  • Jon

I think she looks fantastic, but I wish she looked happier. She should be gnashing her teeth and making finger claws all night.

  • A Savarese

LOVE the gown, not the nails, blood red imo, LOVE the haircut, not the color, darker imo.. LOVE the makeup, not the lip color blood red imo. LOVE her. so pretty and CLASSY. I agree she should look happier. I hope she is happy. .

  • lalahartma

The nails are fine, I can’t with the side boob.

  • Imasewsure

Agreed that the nails are awful but she probably thought it was punk. Dress is great, don’t like the hair at all but at least it was fun and different. Hope it’s extremely temporary though

  • Dam_Angel

we still know you are Anne Hathaway!

  • This is an amazing dress and she’s wearing the hell out of it BUT the hair is aging her terribly and the makeup isn’t particularly flattering. Those great lips need a darker or brighter shade on them and that face needs to be contoured down a bit.

  • Those untreated/unadorned sheer panels certainly do her boobs no favor. The predominant treated sheer material is kind of cool, tho.

  • Lesley

one of my favorite looks. i think she looks fierce as hell

  • MartyBellerMask

If ever there was a time for Annie to deploy the Lana del Rey talons, this would be it.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Oh, Anne… pffft…. a short blonde haircut? That’s what you’ve got? The dress is amazing – you didn’t have to try so hard with the hair. Calm the hell down.

  • Haven’t we all been collectively over the whole sheer black thing for a while now? The hair is different and the look is bold, but it’s kind of a tighter (too tight) version of many other gowns we’ve seen for months.

  • E. D.

Hate the nails, otherwise I don’t mind it.

  • Jacqueline

Dig the hair, indifferent about the side boob, hate the dress.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

Wannabe Tilda. Without the fierceness. Or charisma.

  • Corsetmaker

Well the black slashed effect is pretty punk. Yup, works.

  • Anniebet

She matched her nail polish to her hair color? Oooh, how punk! Eye roll.

  • Celandine1

Oh TLo I am right there with you on the tacky-ass and sometimes downright ugly Pinterest nails.

  • bd73

love it. edgy is one thing she doesn’t do and this was a great surprise.

  • snarkykitten

    Totally from the Sissybear collection.

  • elzatelzabelz

Punk-ier than most at the event. She looks smashing.

  • Sorry…LOVE the nails.

  • alebaby

forget about the nails…. what’s up with her showing her boobs?

  • PeaceBang

I agree about the nails but I think the hair is drop-dead divine. J’ADORE.

  • sekushinonyanko

The more I look at this gown the more I discover how little gown there is. At first glance I was like “oh MAN that’s a lotta sideboob.” Then at a closer inspection “oh NO! That’s whole boobs because the thing is sheer!” And I look down and like the entire dress is see through. WHOA…That is one badass Fredericks of Hollywood negligee…

  • save_the_hobbit

Please tell me someone somewhere is crying at her picture during Princess Diaries and singing “Smooth Criminal”.

  • Coco Cornejo

This is clearly one for the boys who like girls.

  • drdarke

Seven of Nine hits the red carpet.

  • veleri

“we can’t stand the Pinterest nails with a gown like this. We don’t care how popular they are, fashion historians are eventually going to look back on this period of clown nails paired with couture and not judge it kindly.” PREACH!

  • EEKstl

Love the dress, meh the hair, hate the nails.

  • hot.

  • sadly I like the side-boob :/

  • Gotta say, I love this look, and who gives a fuck about the nails.

  • John Gregor

What a missed opportunity, she could have done a killer Anne Carlisle / Liquid Sky look.

  • bitterk

I can’t be objective here so I hold my tongue

  • Danae

    Really awful.
