Marisa Tomei at Creative Time Spring Gala

Posted on May 01, 2013

Darlings, is this kind of elegant?

Marisa Tomei attends 2013 Creative Time Spring Gala in Brooklyn, New York City.

Or is it just pure circus tent?

We like the colors on her, and we might even get behind the shape, but the whole thing looks so badly stitched together. The very definition of a Frankendress. And what the hell is that knot at the hem? Who would want that banging against their leg all night?

No, we’re sorry, Marisa. We continue to applaud and support your coloring outside the lines, but this looks like a pile of scrap material to us.

In spite of how poorly it is pieced together, she looks pretty good (genetics is helping her out with that one).

    • Kiltdntiltd

I’m all for exploring new shapes, and playing with concepts of proportion. This does not work to any real degree.

      • drdarke

Judas H. Priest – why are so many women wearing their bedspreads on the runway…?

    • MilaXX

I almost like it. I dislike the knot, and I can concede the stitching looks a bit home sewn. I guess I like the dress in theory, but not actual practice.

      • 3boysful

Do we think perhaps she made it herself? She is at some “Creative” function . . . .

        • ballerinawithagun

That is some creative play time isn’t it?

      • Jennifer Coleman

It gets a break because she’s standing in front of a graffiti encrusted, paint-peeling wall and not on a red carpet.

    • Pants_are_a_must

She deserves fabulous-er dresses than this.

    • TheLaurenJean

I’d be interested in seeing it unknotted. I think there might be something there.

    • RebeccaKW

I don’t actually hate it as much as I should, and I guess that’s a credit to MT. But I really don’t like it. But, oh, that color is great on her.

    • StellaZafella

What might the Duchess say? “Nice try…no cigar. When you’re shopping for gown materials the “fat quarters quilting basket” is not your freind.”

    • appliquer

Ah, no. Again, where are the mirrors?

    • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

I’ve seen smilar dresses sold on the streets for a very cheap price during summer time.

    • jmorino08

Academy Award Winner Marisa Tomei IS: The Ring Leader

      In theaters Summer 2018

    • Jackie Atkins

A bit too much like table linens for me.

    • atelier482 .

Circus tents indeed. At least the colors are pretty.

By the way, her first picture here reminds me of Gina Bellman (the actress on Leverage).

    • Insidiously

The stupid background is making it look more trashy/cheap than it actually is

    • decormaven

Teal Hefty bag. Not a good look.

    • beebee10

you are totally right once again tlo. love her risk taking but this, no.

    • TheAmericaness

If that’s elegant, than I’ve got elegant spread all over 3 beds at my place right now and 2 in the hot wash. In fact, I think I’ll go slip between a couple of cool elegants and dream of DDL & HJ doing things in no particular order… ;p

      Edit: shoes – hiddy

    • Isabel

But, you guys, don’t you think it is a creative dress for the Creative Times Gala?

    • Fatima Siddique

Maybe her niece/nephew/son/daughter/some child she loves very much made that dress for her.

    • Dam_Angel

I love wearing couture when I go to the slums!!!

    • Sarah

Good up top. Throw a belt on it and make it a standard shift, and we’d be working with something. It’s a really good color for her. I hate that knot and want to untie it SO BAD.

      • demidaemon

But if that happened we would either see a) a ratty too long hemline or b) a too long hemline that would soon become ratty because she would be stepping on it all night.

    • Ruth Preston

I was unaware that you could find a swimming pool cover on Etsy.

    • Imasewsure

She looks so pretty is that stupid dress…

    • MRC210

The top is interesting. I like it despite the Frankenstein stitching. But then it gets scroll-down fugly as the skirt gets baggy and knotty and mullet-y. She looks pretty as always.

    • KatyMightHave

Eliminated designer quote: “If we’d been given more money, I wouldn’t have had to shop the clearance bin at Mood. And I didn’t have enough time to realize my initial vision. And I’m not the first designer to hot glue seams together.”

    • Andrew Schroeder

      • Rhonda Shore

Awful on every level. Not even appropriate for taking out the garbage.

    • PastryGoddess

    • Nicholas

Is this before or after the mugging?

    • Sara__B

The dress looks as if she stayed up all night hurriedly sewing it together, and then fixed the hem problems with a knot. It’s awful!

    • Bibliophage Barb R Goldensun

      Home Ec project.

    • Trisha26

      What bet did she lose?

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

From the waist up, it’s fun. That hem reminds me of Toga Party dresses we used to whip up in college theatre.

    • random_poster

Who decided that a big ole’ wall of graffiti worked as a stand-and-repeat backdrop? Whoever mentioned a mugging is spot on.

    • teensmom99

I’m going to an event this Sat. night where I was told the dress code is “artsy cocktail.” If this were well-sewn together, this would be what I would want to wear.

    • MikeW_Vegas

It looks like Miss Ellen’s portieres as stitched together by a drunk Scarlett

    • LauraWL

I irrationally like her (I think the Fug Girls highmarks for her and the fact that she is aging so gracefully tips in her favour) so I like this, including the messy hair and weird dress…

    • annabelle archer

      Bed Bath & Beyond Shapeless.

    • jw_ny

Considering the venue and backdrop…I think it’s kind of funky and appropriate. Sure, it’s a badly sewn shapeless sack…but somehow she’s pulling it off.

    • Guest

I wonder what the event was, it’s kind of working for her.

    • Qitkat

I love Marisa, and each of these fabrics separately, and I want to like this dress, as she looks wonderful even with the tall hair. It’s actually much better than the average frankendress.

Does anyone know of any film projects that she has been in recently? I don’t recall hearing.

      • Gaby

She was in Crazy Stupid Love in 2011 – it looks like she’s in something in pre-production now, according to IMDB.

    • demidaemon

No. Just no. Go home, put your homemade blanket back on the sofa, and put on your actual outfit.

    • crash1212

I wonder if she’d had a better dress, if the photographers would’ve let her stand somewhere besides the dirty alley for her pictures?

    • fringebenefit

Circus tent. The hem kills any chance it had of being successfully fun and quirky.

    • MoHub

      tablecloth sarong.

    • Tracy_Flick

It looks like something from a tumblr Bad Maternity Prom Dresses. No, no, no. And the shoes – yeesh.

    • CommentsByKatie

I think the dress could work with stark, chic styling. The frizzy hair and the clunky shoes are ruining it for me.

    • SassyMcFrench

That’s where my 9th grade home ec project ended up!

    • Carrieanno

In the spirit of only saying something if I’m saying something nice, I’ll go with “quirky.”

    • DaveUWSNYC

      Upholstery from a ’58 Buick.

    • Gaby

This looks like a slightly more stylish version of a Patricia dress, but with less pretty textile design. Huh.
But that knot is silly – makes it look like a fitted sheet turned into a dress.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

TLo, when you said “Is this kind of elegant?” I yelled “YOU ARE ON CRACK!” And then I scrolled down and I read the rest of your comment so I apologized to the screen and I hope that you heard. What an incredibly fug dress. It is someone’s home ec experiment from 1984. FUG FUG FUG

      • H2olovngrl

I believe my answer to the question “is this kind of elegant?” Was, HELL NO! Also, those shoes look way too much like sensible sandals. UGLY!

    • macwell

I’m sorry, but it literally look like sewn together satin bed sheets. Celebrities are just like us – they have ‘off’ days too! LOL! C’mon – let’s not waste time trying to defend this.

    • Ashley Ellen Wilson

It looks like she rolled out of bed and wrapped a sheet around her.

    • unbornfawn

Love the color, otherwise it is a standard Frankendress.

    • PrunellaV

She herself looks great, but that dress is just trying way too hard.

    • Presumptuous Insect

Doesn’t matter! Love it. Love her. Love a woman who doesn’t plastic surgery her face into Alienville.

    • Raanky

She’s like a low budget version of Julianne Moore.
      Lanvin for K-mart.

    • Carla_Charlton

Awful! It looks like a bad PR dress.

    • ankali

This could have worked if she had BRUSHED HER GODDAMNED HAIR.

    • Contralto

awful dress, but I love her.

    • pookiesmom

NO. satin sheets sewn together poorly.

    • formerlyAnon

The weights of the fabrics don’t work together. Good colors on her though.

    • judybrowni

    • foodycatAlicia

I think this could look quite elegant on a woman with a flatter chest. On Marisa it doesn’t hang nicely.

    • mhleta

`Hmm. I’m guessing this is some sort of well-intentioned experiment in the Re-use movement. I give her an ‘A’ for the intention but an ‘F’ for the execution, and then another ‘A’ just for being the coolest chick on the planet.

    • bellafigura1

      What the heck.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Elegant Frankendress is an oxymoron if I ever heard one before…..

    • marlie

It’s a great color, but that’s about the only positive thing I can say about this dress.

    • Judy_S

Usually bad sewing bothers me, but for some reason I give this a pass. I even like the knot. I even like the clunky shoes, which somehow complement the dress’s esthetic. But I don’t like the messiness of her hair.

    • mmc2315

In the minority here, but this is working for me as venue appropriate. I’m not in love with the dress or anything, but she looks nice. The shoes are fantastic, love the color on her.

    • carnush

    • PinkySlinky

This has a ‘must be better in person’ kinda feel to it

    • Julie Chase

AWFUL. Satin garbage bag, and don’t get me started on mullet hems.

    • padma sallah

It’s like scraps of bedsheets have been stitched together. Not cool. On the other hand, I am liking her from neck up and ankles down.

    • CatherineRhodes

Did you really use the word “elegant” in the first sentence?

    • GinaGeo

I think it looks like what a pregnant butterfly would wear.

    • MartyBellerMask

Aw hell no. I love you Marisa but, unh-uh.

    • Maurice Depestre

She marches to the beat of a different drummer. And I think it’s perfectly ok. i just wish she’d apply that idiom to her seamster as well. These are some rather tortured stiches…

    • Sinéad Doyle

This dress screams fashion student creation to me. Interesting concept let down by execution and lack of awareness of how clothes fit on a real body. Also it’s the sort of shapes I’m seeing all over student catwalks at the moment

    • gsk241

Marisa has been raiding HBC’s closet.

      • DeTrop

and picking the worst of the lot.

        • gsk241

    • guest2visits

Nice color yes, but this a curtain and a tablecloth patched together. Awful.

    • lilazander

This is kind of PR-style overworked shmata in an “avant garde competition” sr something of that sort.

    • librarygrrl64

Even if the dress were elegant (which it isn’t), her hair would have led to my saying, “No.”
