Lucy Liu for The Edit Magazine

Posted on May 13, 2013

For your Pretty of the Day, let’s get some fierce up in this joint.

Lucy Liu is featured in the lasted issue of The Edit magazine photographed by Mariano Vivanco and styled by Tracy Taylor.

On being frustrated by her parents’ initial lack of support: “After their struggle, they just really wanted to see me struggle in a different way, in a more obvious way, maybe something they could understand – she’s at college struggling, but then she will be a banker or a doctor. They understood that.”

On being proud of her achievements: “I wish people wouldn’t just see me as the Asian girl who beats everyone up, or the Asian girl with no emotion. People see Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock in a romantic comedy, but not me. You add race to it, and it became, ‘Well, she’s too Asian’, or, ‘She’s too American’. I kind of got pushed out of both categories. It’s a very strange place to be. You’re not Asian enough and then you’re not American enough, so it gets really frustrating.”

Get it, Miss Thing.

That last dress – WOW! She is working all these looks better than the model AND put Gwen Stefani to shame. That’s some PhD level clothes wearing right there. Luv Huh!
How does someone so tiny manage to look so curvy?

    • MissAmynae

Love how the last pic almost looks like an in between posed shots outtake. Love the quiet expression of her face.

    • sweetestsith

Curvy is a shape, not a size. :)

She does look INCREDIBLE in all of this clothes. I love her.

      • MilaXX

My bad, you are correct. My surprise is I never realized Lucy was so curvy until I saw her working the hell out of that red bandage dress.

    • VicD

  • Isadora Paiva

God, she’s gorgeous! And she’s 44 years old! Love her on Elementary, that show took a risk casting a female Watson, and I’m glad they did.

    • fursa_saida

She’s my favorite Watson of any adaptation I’ve seen. And I’ve seen several.

      • Faerie Nuff

Mine too! She’s a big part of why Elementary is my favorite show on TV right now.

        • fursa_saida

“And a penis” from last week was gold. I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be able to handle the finale at all gracefully.

    • shorty j

my roommate and I were incredibly disappointed by Elementary for a variety of reasons (to each their own), but we decided that show could be amazing if they cast Lucy Liu as Sherlock instead. Bwahaha.

      • julnyes

It wasn’t love at first viewing for me either, but I decided to give it a few episodes before giving it up and I’m happy I did. The growth of their partnership is wonderfully done and they are including more and more nods to canon which I love. It isn’t my favorite adaptation of all (that would be Granada with BBC a close second) but it is quite enjoyable.

  • Christina Diaz

she looks better than the models in ALL of these looks. i’ve always loved this girl and wish she was getting more/better roles. supah luv!

  • Sobaika

LOVE HER. That shot of her in the Lanvin – her gaze could stop you in your tracks.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

    • zenobar

She is just so perfectly perfect. I cannot comprehend what it must be
like to wake up in the morning and see Lucy Liu staring back at you from
      the bathroom mirror. Wow.

  • Cz

She is on my husband’s list. And mine.

I love the third pic. That’s a tough dress to pull off and she looks so comfortable in it. Plus, freckles.

    • Lia M

She’s absolutely on my fence jumper list too. 😉

  • annabelle archer

  • kerryev

She looks incredible in the Lanvin that made the model look like an awkward rumpled mess.

  • poggi

She is amazing. She would be so cute in a romantic comedy. Hollywood, get on that!

    • shuu_iam

She is in one! “Watching the Detectives” with Cillian Murphy. Movie has a scene that might be triggering, but for the most part is fun and has a great ending.

      • poggi

Cool. I will look into that! Thanks.

      • julnyes

Cillian Murphy and Lucy Liu in a romantic comedy together …. how did I not know this existed?!?

Please be on netflix, please be on netflix …. YES IT IS! Woo Hoo!

  • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

I’m loving that photo with the balck Gucci dress.
    She looks fantastic!!

  • stubbornthoughts

She is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. She looks awesome here, and particularly in that Herve number. DAMN.

  • alyce1213

She is amazing, what a face, what confidence.
The first shot looks like a really fabulous not-pixie haircut — very cool. I think she should do it.

    • fursa_saida

Watch Elementary. You will discover that her hair is not actually obedient to the laws of physics and her ponytail belongs in an art museum, or possibly, for that matter, a science museum. Normally I am all like “EVERYONE CUT YOUR HAIR OFF” but it is just. so. amazing.

  • Janet B

    Absolutely beautiful.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Lucy girl, you should get to play any part you want to play. And if people won’t let you .. then bite ’em.

    • Rand Ortega

Then produce it yourself. I’m sure your pal Drew Barrymore will happily pitch in.

      • annabelle archer

Where IS the Flowers Films romcom starring Lucy? Did you see her in Lucky Number Slevin? Adorable and quirky as they come.

        • Rand Ortega

I haven’t but now I must . Checking Netflix as we speak (Booo! Unavailable to stream). That Josh Hartnett was quite the hot morsel a few years back. Wonder what happened to him? (after turning down Superman– really. Bad career move)

          • Eclectic Mayhem

If you’ve not seen it – check out a film called Cypher (2002) starring Liu and Brit (sigh worthy) actor Jeremy Northam. It’s a really interesting sci fi/thriller that was pretty popular in the UK but never got a cinematic release in the US.

Available to stream on Netflix. She’s all kinds of brilliant in it.

          • annabelle archer

There is gossip, gossip I say, that Josh is Suri’s daddy. Pure speculation obviously, but rumor is he took the money and agreed to lay super low for a while. Likely rubbish, but he did go from Hot! to Who? relatively quickly.
In Slevin he spends a large amount of time in only a towel. It works.

          • Rand Ortega

            I’ll take it!

        • starrika

Lucky Number Slevin is one of my favorite movies! I’m shocked it’s not more widely known. Whenever I bring it up, no one seems to know it.

  • JP

Miss Lucy looks fantastic in editorial fashion! She shows wonderful emotional sensitivity in ELEMENTARY too — it’s a mold-breaking role.

  • Rand Ortega

Everything everyone else said. She’s divine. Her freckles should have their own hashtag. #lucyliusfuckinghotfrecks

  • msdamselfly

The first one-the black one- is a WOW Her hair looks great shorter

  • Eclectic Mayhem

Stunning, stunning, stunning. I realise it’ll be of little consolation to her but to me she’s not the Asian anything – she’s LUCY-FUCKING-LIU – bow down mere mortals!

  • Poyznelf Thompson

    best celebrity spread evah.

  • Candice Booth

She could just model for a living she is flawless.

  • Susan Velazquez

Okay, that second shot was weird but not due to Miss Liu but because of that wonky blouse. She is so fierce, can she be our queen?

  • Adriana_Paula

Lovely. Victoria Grayson’s loading a gun somewhere and fixing to get her red dress back.

  • Cortney Dean

I LOVE that they didn’t photoshop out her freckles. Also, she is fierce and a half. Love her.

  • flamingoNW

    More Lucy Liu

  • kimmeister

That’s how it’s done! I totally identify with her comments about not fitting in any categories (plus I married a Mexican American so even more people to not fit in with). I’m glad they haven’tmade an issue of her race in Elementary.

  • Patricia Gillett

Got to hand it to her, I have not seen someone make a Herve Leger look that good in ages. Ditto on the Gucci, which I think we have seen on the RC this year already, just not done as well. Snaps to Miss Lui. And I’m so glad to see her on a series.

    • Ernie Guzman

She makes that Herve Leger dress look A-HA-MAZING.

  • elemspbee

Luv it all, especially that funky contortion illusion with the Margiella top.
and go go go Lucy Liu for talking about being an Asian American woman in Hollywood, and taking on the talk of race in this industry. You. Are. Fierce!

  • Diana

She is so damn gorgeous! Glad she’s back on TV. Love her.

  • hoez

Lucy Liu is perfection. Werk, hunty.

  • Introspective

(sorry bout the all caps crazytime but i shortcircuited for a moment after beholding all of Lucy’s fabulousity)

  • Pennymac

Just breathtaking. She’s better than the models. And sounds grounded in reality. WERQ to the zillionth power.

  • j_anson

She’s awesome. Also gorgeous. I’m not sure why this editorial was so bow-themed, though.

    • fursa_saida

I was wondering also. She doesn’t really seem like a bow kind of lady, though it’s not like she doesn’t look incred anyway.

  • Joyce VG

    She is stunning isn’t she?

  • BrooklynBomber

Stunning. The last look is killer. And, yes, why the hell hasn’t she starred in a stupid rom com? Her Angel-mates have done their share. For God sake, stupid H’wood producers. Don’t tell me this woman can’t open a movie.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

How about a romantic/sci fi/thriller with Brit – thinkingwoman’shunk – Jeremy Northam. Cypher. Never cinematically released in the US. Check it!

    • Winter_White

Alas, she did star in a rom-com along with Cillian Murphy. I’m not even sure if it had a theatrical release? Watching the Detectives, 2007. I love Lucy and Cillian, but this thing was just flat. They both deserved better.

  • Eovaai

    Incredible. Perfection. Bow down.

  • emily

wow. Beautiful. I’d love to see her in a rom-com.

  • bd73

that orange is reminding me of christy turlington in a white azzedine alaia with short wavy hair in vogue circa 1992

  • Eclectic Mayhem

I’ve posted this as a reply somewhere in the thread but I’m going to post it here too in the hopes that more people see it! Ms Liu stars in a really underrated movie (available via Netflix instant) that I heartily recommend: Cypher (2002) with Jeremy Northam. Check it out & let me know what you think!

  • Joanne Abrams

  • Amanda

She is just so, so pretty and doesn’t seem to age at all. That third shot is my favorite, because I just love her freckles/am so endlessly jealous of them. Even when she’s being fierce as hell she looks adorable.

  • a_liking

easily MY “most beautiful woman in Hollywood”.

  • Contralto

She is just exquisite and that blue on her is to diiiiiie.

  • formerlyAnon

Never thought I’d be so happy to see a Leger bandage dress. What is with the middle two – is “large bows from bedsheets” now a thing?

She, however, remains awesome, the whims of couture aside.

  • Bert Keeter

    That Herve is a knockout!

  • Julie Chase

  • DeTrop

She does these clothes proud. Kudos Ms. Liu.

  • nannypoo

She’s just beautiful. She has an interesting face, great modeling skills and she can wear unusual clothes well.

  • quiltrx

Hey, look! Someone CAN wear that MMM top from the other day!
She looks gorgeous, especially in that last shot. She can really wear anything and make it work for her. She seems like someone who isn’t too far up her own behind…like someone you could actually enjoy talking to, and have a real conversation.

  • Jaeda Laurez

She really is everything. I may adopt her as my new spirit animal.

  • Gaby

WERQ. Also, I totally empathize with the 1st-gen out-of-place feelings. Anyway, all these dresses are SINGING on her.

  • Vanja

Stunning! I love her hair, her face, her attitude and her in that red dress is just perfection.

  • Kathleen Ayres

    Gor. Geous.

  • Sau-Chih Feng

Love it! I went through a period of not liking her, because she kept being shoved into the same kind of roles “competent lawyer”, “erotic assassin”, etc. However, I love that she’s an Asian actress who’s trying hard to break out of stereotype roles and being sexy/attractive in non-stereotypical Asian ways.

  • Judy_S

I was only dimly aware of her for a long time but have been really enjoying her in Elementary–where her clothes are usually extremely low-key–many baggy sweatshirts. It’s a treat to see her glammed up in these dresses, playing every variety of goddess.

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

People need to stop wearing Herve Leger bandage dresses now because no one is ever, ever going to look better than LL in that red one. Ever.

  • Colleen Kay Sanceda Gadon

    oh wow

  • Jessica Goldstein

She almost always picks interesting things to wear and pulls them off, but that last Leger dress must be a personal best. Just wow. Can she borrow it for an awards ceremony?

  • Fatima Siddique

She is so gorgeous it’s kind of unfair.

  • Bakerlooline

But honestly, what kind of crazy voodoo magic does she pull when she’s in front of a camera? STUNNED.

  • carnush

Breathtaking photos of a stunning woman! Fierce indeed.

  • Brian @ PWYJudges

Flawless! And if anyone tries to give her crap about her ethnicity, she should pull out some tricks from her O-Ren Ishii days!

  • decormaven

Serving it up in style! Happy sigh!

  • crash1212

    Girl can wear clothes.

  • mjude

    love her

  • marshmallowjane

I think she’s too short for everything but the red dress. But she rocks the red dress and looks great in these photos from the waist up. I can see Lucy in a romantic comedy. Sometimes movie makers completely miss the boat.

  • Shannon Long

I think she is one of the most gorgeous actresses working, and she seems like she’s whip-smart with a good sense of humor– and damn, but she can POSE.

  • marlie

I love this woman – total girlcrush. She looks GORGEOUS in every photo.

  • MichelleRafter

  • Coleen

She might be reaching Blanchett-levels of worship for me. Even if she looks cracked-out in her clothes, she’s still just flawless.

  • purpleprose78

She does not age. So not fair.

    • Ashley Alvarez

      Srsly and I love it.

  • Sally Brownson

*sigh* I could stare at her all day. I wish she got more movie roles.

  • shanteUstay

    The woman is gorgeous
And the styling and light makeup do her great great great justice 😀

  • CeeQ

Love her and would love to see her as a lead in a romantic comedy. I hope she finds a way out of the ninja-geisha roles she’s been stuck in.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

    A-MAZ-ING!!! She’s completely fierce!

  • Danielle Lisle

Girl you better WORK. Three snaps!

  • EEKstl

Fierce as hell! You go, girl!

  • Qitkat

Lucy is my fashion equivalent of a Chinese porcelain vase, perfectly curved, elegant, enchanting, timeless, and ever so slightly mysterious.

    • Qitkat

PS. Not said to make an issue of her race, though I can see it might read like that. I read the article. It’s meant as a compliment. I would love to see her as any character, in any film. She’s that talented.

  • GTrain

Go ON Miss Liu! All kinds of fab here

  • butterflysunita

Truly fabulous photos. And her quotes are sharp and interesting.

  • kmc1138

I love love LOVE when make up artists let her freckles shine through. She has such an amazing, unique complexion. I wish I got to see it more.

  • PeaceBang

Love this! The red is to DIE. I saw her at a Broadway show a few weeks ago. She looked exactly like herself.

  • pattie capet

i like it. she looks like a present.

  • imsusie

  • guest2visits

As long as she’s mentioning it, I think she and Sandra Oh are both actresses that are way under used.
These are all beautiful; I particularly like the one with the Lanvin shoulder-flounce.

  • andreawey

    spec-fucking-tacular! fierce with freckles! :)

  • Frank Lithium

Women of east-Asian descent NEVER age. WERQ that editorial.
