Lana Del Rey in Lena Hoschek at Cannes

Posted on May 16, 2013

Credit-where-it’s-due time, darlings.

Lana Del Rey attends the Opening Ceremony and ‘The Great Gatsby’ Premiere during the 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival in a gown by Austrian designer Lena Hoschek paired with Chopard jewelry.

Lena Hoschek Spring 2013 Collection

We mostly can’t stand her style choices (please refer to the last time she was featured here), but this is one hell of a knockout look. That dress is stunning. The hair looks great. The earrings are a bit much but maybe the dress needed them for balance.  Her ever-present winged eye is the one wrong note here. We know they’re her signature but they’re totally wrong for a dress like this.

    • Sobaika

      That dress is incredible!

Who is Lena Hoschek? Will she accept my firstborn as a form of payment?

      • Anita Freiler Palmer

There’s an outlet section to her website…LOL

    • ginnyt20

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Totally different girl!! Sober? Something… it can’t just be the hair style. She looks amazing.

    • SewingSiren

I actually think she looks better in the kooky 60’s / 70’s Loretta Lynn/ June Carter Cash get ups. Because this is just deadly dull.

      • jennifervney

I feel the same way. It’s a pretty dress sure, but, meh.

    • Kevin VanOrd

That dress is gorgeous, all the more so because it appears that Cthulu himself is staring at me from the top half.

      • quiltrx

For me (see avatar), the only thing that could make this dress any better is Cthulhu!
“And with strange aeons, even bad fashion may die!”

    • phylora

Yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her smile before!

    • Diego!

She is overshadowing Florence with this look. She looks amazing! You WERQ Lana!!!

      • Kiltdntiltd

That isn’t really very hard, considering what Flo is wearing.

    • gabbilevy

Gorgeous dress, minor quibbles on fit, but GURL. This is the right direction for you.

      • Rhonda Shore

some of her magazine spreads, mainly Euro mags, have been quite good. I know LDR’s backstory is bs and that her comments are often stupid, but she looks great most of the time.

    • pattyw

I think we all need to take a trip to Austrian Fashion Week!

    • charlotte

Stunning. Who taught her how to smile?
I thought this was Noomi Rapace at first.

    • shirab

Not a fan of that lipcolor, I must say.

      • Daisy Walker

        It’s horrible.

      • random_poster

Yeah. She needed something with more red.

      • Meg0GayGuys6

It gave a flashback to the lip gloss I wore in my 8th grade school picture. That haunts me

      • Vlasta Bubinka

Yup– color of really worn panty hose. Or very used ace bandages.

      • MartyBellerMask

She has been swapping makeup tips with Paz De La Huerta.
Ahhhh… I miss that crazy broad. Where has she been??

    • Rand Ortega

Wow, that’s HER? A Nobel Prize to whoever mopped up that mess. This dress is spectacular. The styling is flawless. For a minute I thought it was JLaw w/ a dye job.

    • Janet B

I was going to say it’s a pretty dress, but now hahahahahahahahahahahaha

    • Missy Covington

That dress is gorgeous, even if it does look like Victorian wallpaper. It’s PRETTY Victorian wallpaper.

    • snarkykitten

Well shut my mouth. She looks phenomenal!

    • jetpackdino

This is beautiful. That dress, I am in love, I need to find it.

    • Patricia Gillett

Best I have ever seen her look. The dress is fantastic on her. I like all the styling except for the lip color.

    • Monzerrat Ontiveros

I love her make up, and her Día de los Muertos inspired dress..

      • Louise Bryan

It looked that way in the first picture, but the runway picture was a bang in the head, but kinda cool looking.

    • chill85

I was heading down here to post the same comment! Once you see it, you can’t unsee the angry handlebar mustachioed-face!

    • AlisonS

Thank you for featuring this look! Gorg! And my god I want those earrings!

    • Daisy Walker

If only she’d worn it with the make-up from the runway!

      • Aniela Marie Perry

        My thoughts exactly.

    • nannypoo

I bought some piano music today and noticed that there is a big fat collection of her music available, words and accompanying instrumentation, for anyone who wants to sing like her. Wow.

    • Little_Olive

Sorry, I find the dress to be a forgettable combination between tacky and twee. And not pretty.

    • spooki C

Her lip liner is ruining it for me, she has this weird ashy outline. I generally think she has horrible style but I must admit she looks pretty good here.

    • Qitkat

This is what Florence Welch should have worn–with the model’s makeup.

    • Andrea Lane

It would have been better with the Dia de los Muertos makeup the model is sporting.

    • imspinningaround

That milk chocolate lip color is pure 2002.

    • jenno1013

You nailed it with her winged eyeliner being the clunky note here. I even held my pinky up to my computer screen to cover the little wing, and BAM instant improvement, the whole look falling into place. Though the lipstick remains unfortunate.

    • crash1212

Do you suppose the model make-up matching the torso of that dress was on purpose? This is OK, but it freaks me out to have a dress staring at me. Not loving the limp-looking leg covering.

    • Karen Dickerson

OMG I am LIVING for the Dia de los Muertos runway inspiration. If you look at the rest of the collection, a lot of it looks a little costumey and twee, but damn if it isn’t a ton of fun.

    • marlie

Everything about this is gorgeous, even the winged eyeliner. Amazing how much better she looks without her standard 60s-era Pricilla Presley hair.

    • marlie

Also, I love how the press corps are all in tuxes. Is that the usual for red carpet events?

    • MajorBedhead

In the second photo from the bottom, she’s reminding me of a younger Elizabeth McGovern. Which is to say, she looks lovely. I don’t even mind the winged eye. Much.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

All her make up is a little too dark for my taste, but the dress is so fantastic, who cares. Brava darling.

    • annabelle archer

Just gorgeous. She can still go away now.

      • marlie

Hah, that’s what I thought too. “You look nice, but that doesn’t mean that you get to stick around.”

        • NYCGlamourpuss

LOL!! “There’s a $20 on the dresser. Make sure you’re outta here by the time I get out of the shower.”

    • Pennymac

I’m kinda not digging the brownish lipstick. Or is it just my monitor? But I grudgingly like this.

    • MilaXX

I think the dress is doing all the heavy lifting here. I don’t like the earring. If she wanted a pop of color, I would rather have seemed something blue & the shape is too bulky. I like a dangle with this but not these. The winged liner doesn’t work and I’m not sold on the lipstick either. Hair is fine.

    • CommentsByKatie

For me, this dress feels like something I have seen before; I’m over the black and white damask prints. Maybe it’s because I’m wedding planning and Oriental Trading has a whole section of this damask pattern. I also hate that the white tones don’t match, and the overly full skirt is too heavy-looking for a strapless gown. I really dislike the whole thing. I usually agree with uncles and BKs but I can’t with this one!

    • Pennymac

I had to scroll back up to see it. YIKES!

    • Lesley

that dress is stunning! i’m a huge fan of her music, i adore her. now with that being said, whyyy did she mess with her face? and i hate the makeup. brown lipstick has always been a NO in my beauty book.

    • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

In some of the pictures, she looks like Selena Gomez.
A beautiful dress, girl! Well done!!
I agree on the makeup, the winged eyeliner doesn’t go at all.

    • jamie2348

The top of the dress is sitting a little funny and it’s doing the same thing on the runway.

      Overall thumbs up though.

    • Virginia McMurdo

I like it all but for the ruddy lip color. Looks like dusted cocoa powder around her mouth… so maybe a better neutral-ish shade and I say yes!

    • Anniebet

Love this gown with a passion. Wish someone else wore it.

    • mhleta

Oh my God, this is sssooooo much better! The last time she was featured, and pretty much every other time, she’s looked like Pricilla Presley wandering in through the night in some sort of Ambien fugue state. This is down right classy, (and it kills me to say this because normally I can’t even look at her without foaming at the mouth.) That hair style still really takes the “ick” out of whatever unnatural things she’s done to her otherwise young and beautiful face (never do the center part again, dear.) Keep it up, girl, and I might actually be able to listen to your music. Also, can I just say, that Day of the Dead themed fashion show thrills me. Really inspired. I’d love to see the whole thing.

      • marlie

I’ll still never be able to listen to her music.

    • twocee

The dress is beautiful but the model in the runway picture is going to be in my nightmares tonight.

    • JP

I have no idea who this person is (showing my age, I guess), but that dress is amazing.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I LOVE the dress! So beautiful!

And I confess to letting out a happy little squeal when I saw the model’s makeup. As a RuPaul’s Drag Race/Jinkx Monsoon fan, how could I not?

    • flamingoNW

Talk about perfect fit. That bodice fits flawlessly.

    • MoHub

So this is the gown that was pulling the attention away from Florence Welch’s housecoat.

    • MissAmynae

Beautiful, so close. The makeup job just ruins it for me.

    • Jessi03

This is how I want Morena Baccarin to dress.

      • marlie

I actually thought it was Morena Baccarin at first! And yes, I agree with you 100%.

      • JuliaInBlack

I thought the same thing about Jennifer Lawrence. I like your idea better!

    • Clydette Wantland

      Love it.

    • conniemd

I saw the back of that dress in one of the Florence pics and was hoping for a better look. It is simply stunning. I was wondering why TLo didn’t make it a WERQ as I loved the hair, but agree the eye make-up clashes and the lips needed color.

    • decormaven

Boy, that dress is amazing. Her eye makeup bugs, though.

    • ilikemints

I think she has fewer fillers/botox and she can actually move her face. Who knew she had such a lovely smile?

    • Jackie Atkins

The eyes and the bad posture kept this from being a WERQ, I assume?!

    • Sarah Thomas

I can’t unsee her terrible, terrible nosejob.

    • Julie Chase

I love the pattern but I hate the bottom fishtaily hem.

    • Glammie

Oh good, I was wondering the exact same thing–the who’s Lena Hoschek part. (The kid stays.)

Who knows about Lena Hoschek and when and why did you know it? We’ll get to the bottom of this.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

      Brava, Lana. You look fabulous.

    • sagecreek

I only vaguely know who she is, but she looks fine here.

    • alyce1213

Interesting dress. And why is she at Cannes?

      • marlie

She has a song on the soundtrack for the Great Gatsby. That’s why Flo is there too.

        • alyce1213

Oh, right. I saw her once on SNL and was not impressed.

          • marlie

Oh, it was AWFUL. The worst SNL live performance I’ve seen. And that includes the chick who lip-synced.

    • Sara__B

I had no idea she could look this good. Now if she’d just change her eyeliner style and improve her posture, and go away…

    • Kevin VanOrd

At first I thought it was Cthulu. But now, I have stumbled upon the real answer: it’s Mr. Pringles, the face on Pringles cans!

    • CatherineRhodes

Although it would have been way more bold to show up in the Dia de los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”) face.

    • rkdgal

      Shoulda worn the runway makeup!!

    • sekushinonyanko

I know red lips would make this a full on Spanish Diva costume but whatever, it’s unavoidable if you’re wearing a mantilla as a dress and really, it beats the hell out of the Ugliest Lipcolor In The World she has going on. Otherwise I like it.

    • ballerinawithagun

Gorgeous dress. This time it needs red lipstick. Was there a Frida Kahlo Day of the Dead theme for the runway show?

    • Tracy_Flick

I think the bottom portion of the skirt looks like curtains. I had some just like that once, and I can’t un-see it.

    • Adrianna Grężak

Love the hair, but hate the lips

    • Eovaai

      This is gorgeous. Stunning.

    • Bert Keeter

    • jmorino08

What credit? She put on a gorgeous dress and managed to eff it up with her makeup and bad posing?!

    • MandyM

I agree about her make up. I also think she needs a sultry red lip.

    • LaSylphide

Gorgeous dress, but everything else, bleh. Maybe red lipstick and copious infusions of diamond jewelry might help?

    • Buffy

gorgeous but I screamed a little when I scrolled down to the runway picture. wth?

    • Jenna Chapman

Morena Baccarin should be wearing this.

    • quiltrx

I’m sort of skipping around the Cannes posts…but I doubt I’m going to see another gown through the whole festival that I love as much as this one. Black and white is kind of ‘my thing’, and this dress is just poetry for me!

    • Vera

Tired of the media trying to make LDR an “It Girl.” Pretty dress, though.

    • lalahartma

      I love this.

    • librarygrrl64

It’s a beautiful gown, bur she still annoys the hell out of me.
