Kerry Washington in Calvin Klein

Posted on May 31, 2013

This is the mark of a true fashionista:

‘Scandal’ star Kerry Washington attends the Variety Emmy Studio in West Hollywood, California in a Calvin Klein dress accessorized with Christian Louboutin pumps, a Movado watch, a Roger Vivier bag, and a Melinda Maria ring.

Christian Louboutin Pigalle Leopard Pump

Roger Vivier Fall 2012 Prismick Bag

She can take a look as simple and, frankly, cliched as the little black dress paired with leopard pumps and a quilted bag on a chain – all style standards for half a century or more – and make it look fresh and chic, not to mention gorgeous. The lady’s just got it.

I’d have to disagree, but I can see where you’re coming from. I think the outfit looks rather plain, and does nothing for her figure.

      • madscntst

The dress is a little shapeless, no?

        • $26351735

Yes, and that’s not always a bad thing, but maybe if the pattern that’s there was altered a bit, so that the pattern showed up in some spots and not others, it would provide depth. As it stands, it makes her look sort of lifeless.

        • Donna Tabor

          It’s a classic shift dress.

      • MoHub

Does it really take a big-name designer to make a plain basic shift dress?

        • $26351735

Some people care more about what name is on the inside tag than what the tag is attached to :)

          • adnama79

Calvin Klein plain basic shift dresses fit better than others. Ross and
Macy’s carry them – go try them on and see. Like magic.

            • $26351735

I’m not able to wear shift dresses just yet and feel ‘right’ in them, but will be in due time and will be happy to take up that offer!

            • adnama79

I don’t know your situation, so this is not to invalidate your point about not being able to wear shift dresses, but as an fyi. I don’t feel right in shift dresses, either. Other than Calvin Klein’s. Something about them is flattering that isn’t in other shift dresses, including ones I attempted to make for myself. (But I really suck at sewing.) They do something magical to my waist.

          • Nelliebelle1197

Fabrics and fit matter. Construction and design matter. So yes, a basic shift from a top designer is not the same thing as a basic shift from Target, Sorry. It is not just the label.

            • $26351735

i agree with you that the designer can make a difference in fit, quality and materials. I only meant that to some people the name in the dress is all that matters and not the actual style/design itself.

I’m just so happy she’s having her “moment” now. I’ve been a fan, but Scandal finally put her on the A list (or B+) and hope she enjoys the ride since Scandal will probably burn out fast.

      • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

        Couldn’t have said it better.

      • drdarke

Well, hopefully she’ll ride SCANDAL to something bigger and better before the show collapses into pointless cheese (as opposed to the Magnificent WTF’ery it is now!), @cpjones….

      • Darren Nesbitt

She’s frequented the Oscars because of her project, The Forrest Whitaker film (African General, Name?) and Django.

    • crash1212

Beautiful. This is one of my favorite looks and one I sport on occasion. Love the shoes.

      • murt

Same – I love that the dress is a bit looser on her, and not very fitted.

    • bertkeeter

A black Marlo Thomas / That Girl!!

      • drdarke

No, much hotter than Marlo Thomas ever was, @bertkeeter –

LOL, Dude! Loved your IRL counterpart on PROJECT RUNWAY….

    • Rhonda Shore

This is true elegance. It’s classic and she shines. LOVE!

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

She looks pretty, but is it just me or she’s dressed to match the Chivas Regal bottle? I mean, that would be awesome.

      • fursa_saida

In future, I plan to theme all of my outfits around various whiskey labels.

    • MilaXX

Love her! I planning a Scandal swatch from season 1 over the summer. She and Elizabeth Moss are on the Variety magazine cover together looking Gorg!

    • Sobaika

Easy and understated. I love that she can vacillate between this and the more complicated stuff.

    • marlie

      Simple, classic, and lovely.

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

She can do no wrong. She can be subtle and not desperate for attention.

      • conniemd

That’s the response to the “shapeless” comments. Yes, the dress is a basic shift pattern. It doesn’t, however, make her look fat, and her good shape beneath the dress is obvious, she doesn’t need a fitted sheath or illusion netting or cut-outs to show off her shape.

She looks elegant, chic and appropriately dressed for the venue.

        • fursa_saida

Exactly. We don’t need to see a person’s belly button every single time they find themselves on a carpet.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      Loving it.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

now let’s see them put her on the cover of vogue’s september issue. she’s got the class and style for it.

      • decormaven

        This times 1,000.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

I appreciate the classy simplicity, I just wish she didn’t look to be near tears.

    • JP

It’s very “head typist in the secretaries’ pool, and not in a good way to me. The shapelessness of it, the wrinkles from sitting, and the center seam — they’re just not working for me. Hair and makeup are flawless though.

    • Iroqhard

She has very Edina Monsoon cheekbones- her whole body hangs off of them.

    • e jerry powell

I am still disappointed with the pigeon-toed stance, particularly because I know she can manage all the runway poses.

    • Annarosa

I don’t know, guys… she’s gorgeous but the fabric of the dress put some flaw on her… that’s too bad, because the hair and the make up are perfect and I love the shoes and the bag!

    • swiss_miss

Its driving me mad that I just can’t get into “Scandal”. I mean, black female lead? A very unstereotypical gay man? Written by a black female writer? Sounds pretty good. But I can’t stand Fitz, I find Olivia not as interesting as she should be, the “gladiator in suits” thing sounds really stupid and Quinn seemed just incompetent.

    • GillianHolroyd

Timeless. No one will be cringing over this photo in 10-15 years time and declaiming, what were they thinking?!

    • Heather

YAY! A celebrity in a tasteful, classy-sexy outfit!

    • Logo Girl

The contrast between her elegance and the funky stairway and cruiser bike in the back made me do a double take.

    • girliecue

What a difference a hairdo makes! She was on my Irrational Hate List before, but now I love her with sleek hair and bangs.

    • plinkiedoodle

A true fashionista can carry off shapeless. This woman has it!

    • TLJezebel

I don’t know why she bugs me so much, but she does.

    • Qitkat

Shift dresses were ubiquitous back in the day. We never thought of them as shapeless, but as an easy style to toss on and go. They always looked good on a slender woman. And could be run up quickly on a sewing machine, for lots of different looks. A favorite I still remember was in a soft print with hand smocking on the bodice. I loved that dress as a teenager and wore it all summer.
      [sniff]

Kerry looks classic and timelessly lovely to me here.

    • oekmama

It’s the dress you wear when you want to enjoy dinner and not have to worry about holding your tummy in. In theory, chic, so I’m asking myself, must I always see celebs in form-fitting finery?

    • Imasewsure

I don’t always love her RC looks (although I respect them). Love this one though. She looks beautiful and comfortable!

    • kimiakay

It’s an interesting fabric. In some photos it looks almost a little heavy. But what’s making the look for me are those shoes. They draw my eye away from the dress. Love them! Another thing: I think she’d be better off without the watch and substitute a bracelet on her wrist. That would up the class factor for me. This is just nit-picking. I think she looks great.

    • Legra Michelle

If she had on a simple belt it would’ve worked better. Just because its Calvin Klein doesn’t make it chic. This dress doesn’t give her any shape whatsoever! Makes her look like she’s wearing a black box.

    • SpillinTea

Rumor is she might get a Vogue cover. Although she’s BEYOND worthy, I’ll believe it when I see it. Ms Wintour ain’t one for promoting sistas.

    • SewingSiren

      Classy and classic.

      • Lori

She deserves a Vogue cover and a Vanity Fair cover. She is worthy.

    • Diego!

I think she looks very pretty here.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

She sure as hell does. She seems to win chicest person in the room no matter what she wears.

    • Renate Yerkes

TLo, your post was so refreshingly gentle today. I feel peaceful. And Kerry looks peaceful too.
