Kerry Washington for ELLE Magazine

Posted on May 09, 2013

And finally, for your Pretty of the Day, Miss Kerry Washington, working some perfectly styled looks for ELLE.

Kerry Washington covers the June 2013 issue of ELLE magazine in a Marc Jacobs cashmere cardigan and shorts photographed by Horst Diekgerdes and styled by Samira Nasr.

On her current success: “I’m the luckiest broad in Hollywood now. To be the lead actor on Scandal and to be in the highest-earning Tarantino movie- I don’t get to ask for more.”

On getting red-carpet ready: “I found out I enjoy the process. All these people show up at my house, they all have kits, someone has dresses. And it’s like, Let’s have fun. It’s not all about me. We’re able to create stories on the red carpet.”

On that last point: EXACTLY, GIRL. It’s always so nice to hear a celebrity just get it when it comes to the red carpet.

Marc Jacobs Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Leona Walton

Tom Ford Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Julia Stegner

Giorgio Armani Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Ella Kandyba

She’s got the rare gift of making granny panties and Daisy Dukes look chic, but she’s rocking the shit out of that Tom Ford skirt.

    YAAAAAAAAAAS!

I’m so glad that she finally has a cover. And looks fab on it, with good soundbites.

    • Mary229

Can we talk about how it’s becoming rare to see a legit actress on a magazine cover? Then you add that she’s a woman of color and it skyrockets into super rare. I like her so much.

      • VioletFem

Yes to everything you said. I love her show, she is an amazing actress and I am so happy that she is experiencing so much success in her career right now. It is frustrating to see how sporadic women’s magazine are with placing WOC on their covers, even with someone as successful as Kerry.

      • DeborahJozayt

On top of that, it’s not January, which I guess is the time you put a woman of color on the cover of a magazine because it’s the slowest time of the year (or something), and here she is for a May cover!

        • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

It’s not February, either (Black History Month).

          • DeborahJozayt

            Ooh, that’s right!

      • Sobaika

Yes! It’s usually either a mocktress or an A lister who has scores of covers. I’m glad Kerry is having a Moment right now.

        • Mary229

Ok, so I’m not imagining it then. I feel like the disconnect between the women who are on magazine covers vs. the quality actresses working right now is really high. It’s so rare to have a really talented legit actress (and I’m not talking about someone like Paltrow who is totally overexposed) on the cover of a mag. A legit actress woman of color? Even more rare.

    • MilaXX

She’s got a few of them coming up.

  • MartyBellerMask

    Goddess!

  • Mary229

I’m just thrilled to see this woman on a magazine cover. Yes. She deserves every success she has. Natural beauty and this woman can ACT. She has talent! The fact that the shoot is good is just a bonus for me. This woman is a great actress and I’m so happy for her.

  • hughman

Now THIS is what they mean on PR when they talk about mix and match. Loving the high end mixed with weekend looks.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

They did a great job with the styling.

  • charlotte

Gorgeous! I want that cardigan and skirt. The only quibble I have is that her left leg looks oddly detached (I guess Photoshop) on the cover.

  • http://twitter.com/thereallebz Lebogang Mogashoa

Her face is exquisite. Not just extremely beautiful but full of life too. So constantly on the verge of some great emotion.

    • Chaiaiai

YES! So much this. And I love the shot with little make up on.

  • Coolekat

Love the denim shirt, shimmer skirt. Great look and thank God the stylist ditched the matching boots.

    • 3boysful

Maybe we could afford to buy that skirt and share it? Oh, hell, dream on . . . .

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I’ll chip in a few bucks!

      • http://twitter.com/Ifeoluwahan Ifeoluwa Olokode

Virgos lounge has similar and very affordable versions of the same skirt. I’m almost convinced Tom Ford borrowed their aesthetic.

  • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

Maybe they’ll have to change the saying from “She could put on a burlap sack and still look good” to “She could put on metallic granny panties and still look good.”

  • ilikemints

THAT FACE. How is that a real face? So beautiful.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

And this is how we do gorgeous.

  • Qitkat

This is what SENSUAL looks like, much more than sexy.
That face, those eyes, those lips.
    Love.

  • MilaXX

LOVE her! She’s having her moment and just enjoying it without managing to be obnoxious about it.

    • Introspective

      THIS. ALL THIS.

kerry remains pretty humble amidst the overwhelming success shes enjoying right now. and she’s gorgeous and brilliant. and im over the moon for her representing us bronx broads and colored girls with class and beauty.

YAY for this cover and all that it means. luv huh.

  • decormaven

That Tom Ford skirt is giving me LIFE! Kudos to the photo stylist, and snaps to Kerry.

  • Tatiana Luján

I think she is so much prettier than how she looks in this magazine.

  • Kim O’Neill

She is so gorgeous. And I saw her on Bill Maher once and she is beyond intelligent.

  • MilaXX

I know there are some Gladiators among my fellow BK’s. Are you all ready for tonight?

    • StelledelMare

      Definitely ready!

    • http://profiles.google.com/claudiaberry Claudia Berry

      hell to the yeah!!!

    • DaringMiss

      Absolutely!

    • Eva_baby

      With popcorn and red wine!!

  • KateShouldBeWorking

She is so elegant I can’t imagine her doing normal person things, like grocery shopping or walking her dog.

  • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com heartbot

    I love her so much.

    • conniemd

Me too. Love the TV show too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

Her face on the cover is astounding. And I covet the skirt, sparkles AND flowers? I should hate it!

  • SRQkitten

Granny panties are not shorts. Even on the divine Ms. K. I don’t like them.

    srq

  • understateddiva

She’s giving great face, but these are franken-outfits.

  • Tracy_Flick

She is amazingly gorgeous, and I don’t even mind the granny panties. But the cropped cardigan makes it look like her torso belongs to a child. Like one of those toys with three parts, where you can mix and match head-body-legs.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

She’s GORGEOUS. She seems like she’d be so much fun to be friends with!

  • alyce1213

I love her face, not all the clothes.
Did you all know she’s from the same Bronx neighborhood as Jennifer Lopez? Yep, Kerry from the block. They went to the same Girls’ Club, at different times — J-Lo was already a role model/legend.

  • filmcricket

I pretty much hate all the outfits, but she is beyond gorgeous.

    • lulukittie

This is what I wanted to say! So freaking pretty– she rises above the meh wardrobe.

  • unbornfawn

    Kerry is beautiful.

I need some help here. Who wears granny panties, when and where? (Let’s exclude fashion editorials and wacky red carpets.)

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

my daughter tells me they wear them in the hip-hop clubs in the oakland area with stockings and boots. and hopefully something on top.

      • unbornfawn

Thanks. I can actually picture them working on the young women in the kind of venue.

  • minnye

Warmth and grace, embodied. She’s beautiful and I love the hi/low pieces together. I can’t believe no one else is totally insane over the sequined Armani jacket. COVETOUS here.

  • bellafigura1

Love her, love the show, love the Elle shoot, and all the clothes!!!

  • KateMaryC

    Goodness, that is a face.

  • clairellis

Uncles, after all the stars made my eyes bleed at the Met, I’m so, so glad you featured one of my favorite ladies ever. She is rocking the shit out of everything they put her in. I’m in love with her.

  • http://twitter.com/phreddd F. Eloy Vaughn

BTW guys, when’s the “Scandal Style” piece coming?

  • Imasewsure

It’s been a long time since I saw any Tom Ford women’s wear that I liked but I love that whole outfit, even the boots. She looks wonderful here too. She looks great here

  • CarolinLA

I never really thought too much about her until I saw her as a panelist on Bill Maher during the 2008 election cycle. She more than held her own against the conservatives on the panel. She was quite impressive so it’s really great to see her have such high-profile success.

  • prettybigkitty

Stunning. Makes me love her even more.

  • Anniebet

Now that’s a beautiful person. Gorgeous pics. Elegant.

Side note: Don’t show Beyonce that Tom Ford sequined skirt with the matching leg wraps/thigh high boots.

  • formerlyAnon

That Armani jacket is stunning. Just stunning.

Seeing her in the jacket & in the Ford skirt made me remember the days I used to look at clothes in magazines and want to look *just like that* so very badly that I imagined that it might actually happen.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

girls has the luscious lips of the century…mmm mmm mmmm!

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I usually manage to look at these posts without actually wanting to own any of the pieces but I DIE for the cashmere cardi! I’ve already told you how much I love this woman and this doesn’t alter that one bit.

  • http://twitter.com/SuzBald Susan Baldwin

Agree re: Tom Ford skirt. That’s a gasp-inducing shot. I love how they styled it with the denim!

  • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

I love that red lip on the cover, it’s gorgeous on her. I liked that phase where she was showing up looking like a hipster schoolgirl to things – that style suited her so well! But she does bombshell well too. :D

  • theblondette

I feel like there’s something a little off with her make up on the cover though I can’t quite put my finger on it… I think it may be the lip colour makes her complexion look a little drained? But she looks great in these.

  • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

I LOVE the Tom Ford skirt and the Armani jacket. I am so glad you called those “shorts” out for what they are: Granny panties. Puketastic.

  • carnush

    Gorgeous. Her lips are amazing.

  • http://twitter.com/ashleynalvarez Ashley Alvarez

She called herself a broad! I have died and gone to heaven. LOVE/

  • frannyprof

Awesome. Giving me life after all of the Met Gala disappointments!

  • tereliz

You can tell by looking at her red carpet pics and this editorial that she’s not fooling, she really does have fun with fashion, and I think that’s part of why she can pull off looks that most others don’t have the confidence to wear.

That Armani jacket pic is so great! Love the use of more casual denim pieces with high end ones, really emphasizes the “playing dress up” quality.

  • stubbornthoughts

“She’s rocking the shit out of that Tom Ford skirt.” YES.

And I love that Armani jacket on her, too. I could give or take the granny diaper look, but she looks fabulous so it really doesn’t matter.

  • http://twitter.com/Chucko78 Chuck Barthelme

    Yowza!

  • lizlemonglasses

Wow, she’s gorgeous. She’s even making the tied denim shirt work. And I speak from experience (c. 1993) when I say that ain’t easy!

  • Not applicable

she is so flippin’ gorgeous. I could stare at her lips all day long.

  • http://roxyturtle.tumblr.com/ roxyturtle

She is so incredible — beautiful, gutsy and smart. Last month she had an incredible spread in InStyle that bested the cover story by a longshot. It’s so nice to see Ms. Washington get the cover this time around!

  • lalahartma

Why do they keep foisting granny panties on us??

  • StrandedFashionista

I was hoping that Vogue would realize what an amazing woman she is, and give her a Vogue shoot where she could rock the hell out of some couture… Clearly I’m going to be disappointed. But, also, I’m glad that she got such an amazing cover for Elle with such beautiful looks for her to wear.

    • unbornfawn

Agreed. Would have loved to have seen her in a couple of couture gowns!

  • fursa_saida

She is just unassailably pretty. Like I sit here and just wonder how it’s possible.

  • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

The clothes look better on Kerry than they look on the runway. It’s nice to see someone so gorgeous and grateful at the same time.

Where was Kerry’s name when the People Magazine editors selected the “Most Beautiful Woman”?

  • Beverly Kozma

The lady is lovely, but I can’t decide between the two ugliest things I’ve seen this week: those granny-panty shorts or that damn busted-open jacket on Solange.

  • guest2visits

So pretty – love the cover in spite of the granny panties. She should have been in the complete Tom Ford, it would be smashing on her.
