Katy Perry in Thom Browne

Posted on May 03, 2013

Bless you, Katy. We knew you wouldn’t succumb to the “Spring means TOTAL LACK OF COLOR!!!!” trend going on with our ladycelebs lately.

And bless you for turning the tired old fragrance launch event into something that looks like a coronation in Wonderland.

Katy Perry unveils her new fragrance ‘Killer Queen’ at the James B Duke Mansion in New York City in a Thom Browne dress paired with alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet heels and jewelry by Lorraine Schwartz, Chopard, Fenton/Fallon and David Yurman.

Thom Browne Fall 2013 Collection

J’ADORE.

That perfect combination of cartoon + Marie Antoinette. It’s a stunning dress and she’s absolutely the right lady for it. Love that the stems are black in her version.

We tend to get yelled at by angry Pinterest ladies when we deride Pinterest nails, but at least these feel appropriately opulent to us. They go with the look, even if we wouldn’t have suggested it.

Ya gotta love her. Just do.

    • RedRaven617

Was thinking the same thing. I always smile when I see her.

  • snarkykitten

The nails are pretty terrible, but you guys make an excellent point (as always!) There’s a time & a place for Pinterest nails, and KP’s perfume launch is that time & place.

  • aeb1986

What a cool dress! Such an interesting look. Love it.

  • http://twitter.com/hmbscully WendyD

Totally love it. Everything is perfectly over the top. Even the nails, those are fantastic!

  • Jonquil

Those nails are truly awe-inspiring. I don’t know that I like them, but I sure do respect them.

But is the bodice not a bit large on her? It looks smooth and fitted on the model which is far more flattering.

    • ballerinawithagun

Unfortunately the bodice is not fit correctly. I thought it was just because she was sitting down but it didn’t improve when she was standing. I love Thom Browne.

  • http://www.facebook.com/teresaec Teresa Enright Campbell

I love her! I love how she can go from that beautiful blue that she wore the other night to this, classy to fab cartoon in a blink and look perfect in both. The nails match the bottle. If she HADN’T done it it would not have been perfect KP.

Thank you Katy for brightening up the week. It’s been a boring red carpet week. Was praying for a Tilda, but Katy will do just fine.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Even the shoes which cannot be seen get an over the top name: alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet heels

  • bxbourgie

“She keeps Moet et Chandon in her pretty cabinet… “Let them eat cake” she says, just like Marie Antoinette…” She does look like a killer Marie Antoinette indeed. Snaps Katy!

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Yes, I’ve been singing that song in my head since the top of the post.

  • http://twitter.com/FlyoverFi FlyoverFi

Channeling the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland for the launch of a perfume called “Killer Queen”?!? Love. It!

  • jw_ny

she knows how to get attention!

  • SewingSiren

She gets that dress. And the fingernails!

  • Jonquil

The hair! That midwest prom hair is deeply troubling.

  • http://twitter.com/Glam_Dixie Glam Dixie

I would’ve loved to have seen a full shot of her standing in the dress, I’m loving it. Those nails are horrible but they certainly go with the look/event.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

Yes, I would have, too. It’s a striking dress.

  • crash1212

LOVE! This is perfect for her, for the venue, for the launch. I agree about the Pinterest nails – any other deployment would have me howling in opposition, but here – perf.

  • http://twitter.com/hugandpint Courtenay P

Oh wait. Does she have “Jesus” tattooed on her wrist?

    • MilaXX

Her parents are ministers and she was a Christian pop star when she started out.

    • Griffinqueen

There’s nothing Jesus loves better than a tattoo.

  • MilaXX

yep all the OTT stuff suits this occasion.

  • CommentsByKatie

YES. Love this! She had been looking kind of drab (well, Katy Perry drab) in her last few looks. Glad to see her return to sparkly, cartoony, fun stuff. Go Katy!

  • tripletmom96

love it — on her. anyone else i’d be saying “you’ve got to be kidding”, but katy is rocking this look. like it on her better than on the runway. and i LOVE the nails. total impracticality, but hey — it’s katy perry and it’s a photo shoot… it’s an over-the-top look that only she can rock….

  • Qitkat

Send her back to Once Upon a Time. That would liven up the show.

  • Imasewsure

Head to toe awesome. Love that she brings it (and also makes it fun for us almost all of the time)

  • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

I was so excited to think that Thom Browne was launching a fragrance! (What the hell was I thinking?). Love the dress, shame about the nails.

  • Carla_Charlton

While I don’t like super-squared off nails, I also don’t like the pointy ones that seems to be popular now.

    • 3boysful

Me either. And these presumably coordinate with nothing else, so she sat for the application, wore them a few hours, and now has to (have a minion) redo? No, thanks.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

This is why I love her. Brava.

  • formerlyAnon

In a year that has had a number of DISMAL, yet over-the-top perfume launches, Ms. Perry hits the bullseye!

  • Amelia

As a non-pinterest lady, I think that nail art, when deployed properly can be beautiful and
interesting and contribute to the overall look. I would agree that a
lot of the nail art that makes it onto the red carpet isn’t good/outfit
appropriate, but it is pretty irritating when people’s immediate
reaction to nails that are painted anything but a solid color is “ew,
pinterest nails” or when nails that extend even a little past the tips of the fingers get
called talons. I guess I just don’t understand why people who
celebrate intricate designs and experimentation when it comes to
clothing are so conservative when it comes to the same things on nails. That being said,
while I like these nails conceptually, I think that the execution of the
overall nail shape is a little clumsy and it is kind of ruining them.

  • http://twitter.com/RaankyRaank Raanky

J’adore. Brava to her stylist, Johnny Wujek!

  • hughman

When is Helena Bonham Carter coming out with a fragrance?

    • StellaZafella

When Vivien Westwood designs the bottle and Tim Burton designs the ad campaign. It will be a scent of Cinnamon, Cardamom, Lilac and Strychnine…called “Hewwena!”

      • demidaemon

I really think Absinthe has to be in there, for some reason. I can’t exactly say why.

  • http://www.facebook.com/conysoledad Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

Lovely and quite fiiting. I hate the hair and the nails, but she definitely looks like a Queen.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I like her more the more I see her. It helps that we spoofed Firework and Last Friday Night in our Law Revues these past couple years, so I’ve also become fond of her music.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Those nails are also subject to the “know your venue” rule. Anywhere else, they’d be ridiculously tacky. At Katy Perry’s perfume launch, they’re entirely appropriate. I like the dress, in theory, but it’s really unflattering to her figure.

  • unbornfawn

Love this. She’s been dressing so tame lately, I was beginning to worry about her. Our girl is bringing it.

  • bobbinforcheese

I f*cking love that Thom Browne collection.

  • http://twitter.com/katrinamayr Katrina Mayr

She named it KILLER QUEEN?!? Ugh, NO.

  • tereliz

Still love that collection. I do think the stems are still green, it’s just that the venue is dimly lit. Not sure how I feel about the neckline, but the pattern is so distracting it’s hardly noticeable. I can’t decide if I love or loathe that bracelet, but I do know that her nails are frightening me.

So I guess what I mean to say is that Katy looks pretty Katy here: the perfect combination of upscale and whimsical that she’s been sporting lately. No one else could get away with this dress quite like her!

  • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

I had the pleasure of watching her movie the other day, and gained a new found love and respect for miss Katy. Go ‘head, gurl.

  • http://www.facebook.com/RocketStarling Ashley Ellen Wilson

I was thinking less “marie antoinette” and more ‘Queen of Harts”

  • Janet B

    A crazy fun dress.
This is when you wear crazy nails!

  • MarissaLG

I wish we could see her standing! But, from what I can see it’s cool and weird and perfect for KP.

  • AViewer44

I only wish she’d held the launch at Gracie Mansion.

  • guest2visits

Really hard to see how amazing she is in this dress from all the gaudy, busy backdrop.
I bet without the nails and all the other noise she would have been stunning in a more spare and chic fashion editorial.
What a miss since this is such a great dress for Katy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pamela.hunt.796 Pamela Hunt

Now THOSE hands won’t be scrubbing any tubs! I would like this dress more w/ one less bunch of roses. But she still looks great.

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

I loved that Thom Browne show, good for Katy in rocking some of it her way! She’s a gingham gal!

  • steeg of their own

Are those nails acrylic sculpts? I hate to think how long they must have taken her nail artist to perfect.

  • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

That dress! Man, I love the extra hand in that last pic. Plus, her hair. Big “meh” to her lee press on baroque nails. Ladies in various parts of the hood have been doing more interesting things with their own and/or acrylics for ages.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sharon-ORourke-Frenz/1051519096 Sharon O’Rourke Frenz

    Love, love, love the nails.

  • maggiemaybe

I love that dress and it is perfection on her. I am, however, always a little distracted by her face makeup–it should be a little less yellow, no? Doesn’t seem to quite match her clavicle…

  • siriuslover

hahahaha, pinterest ladies! Love Katy Perry and love this OTT debut for her fragrance. I may have to check it out.

  • quiltrx

Killer dress and the perfect venue for it!
And I still love the model’s shoes. :)

  • Anniebet

Holy cow…that’s some amazing styling! She’s loverly, the dress is loverly, the nails are beyond. And, omg… they found red broccoli for her to hold! ;)

    Love the whole thing.

  • ankali

I was sure that Gaga would be the first to be seen in this collection. Kudos to Katy for getting there first, and for looking absolutely fantastic.

  • LaSylphide

How does she do the dishes in those nails?

    • Sally Brownson

She doesn’t. She can get the 2 of hearts to do it for her :P

  • DeTrop

AbFab. This is a breath of fresh air.

  • kathrineb

The dress/look works for her but the nails are kind of nightmare inducing to me.

  • http://twitter.com/igobyleo Leo Ridela

I love that she’s been maturing her style, meaning less tacky, yet it still reads totally KATY PERRY.

  • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

I don’t usually like big and loud, but this dress is beautiful on the perfect woman.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=535548244 Kim Baker Vidas Davey-Irvin

i don’t think those stems are actually black. they seem to have a green glint to them. maybe just photo’d much darker?

  • Tuneful54

Love this. Keep it up. Looks happier, too. Good move to get rid of that jerk she was dating. Must feel about 1,000 lbs. lighter.

  • https://plus.google.com/108251075533777132179/posts Frank Lithium

How can you not love this woman.
