Girl, That’s Not Your Dress: Katy Perry in Prada

Posted on May 01, 2013

What an odd dress:

Katy Perry attends Catherine Martin And Miuccia Prada Gatsby Exhibition Opening Cocktail Party in New York City in Prada.

Prada Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Ondria Hardin

Prada Spring 2013 Clutch

That’s the worst runway-to-real-world transition we’ve seen in some time. We love the runway version but Katy’s version just looks like odd scraps of fabric weirdly pieced together. All the color and interest has been drained out of it too. And this is the rare occasion where we’re going to say the dress didn’t need a belt.

Anytime a starlet makes that big a deal of showing off her bag, you can bet she doesn’t like the dress she’s wearing.

And those shoes are hideous. Oh, girl. You were doing well there. Stick with Dolce & Gabbana. You’re not a Prada kind of gal. Granted, you pretty much had no choice here, but still. Words to ponder going forward, darling.

Love the dress. HATE the shoes.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

This is a giant fail. The only things I like are the clutch and her hair and makeup. The dress and the shoes? NO.

      • drdarke

Who is the Fruit of the Loom Grape, and why does he has a Katy Perry mask on….?

        • TheAmericaness

          HAHAHA

      • demidaemon

Agreed. If the pictures had been cut off from the neck down, I doubt Katy Perry would be the first guess.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I’ve said it before, but Katy’s dress looks like something that would have gotten a contestant auffed on PR.

      • demidaemon

I think it’s more of a safe in the first half of the competition, honestly. Definitely a candidate for the auf in the second half, though.

The dress would have been better (though still drab) with the white panel on the chest removed. I don’t hate the shoes near as much as the horrific ones from the runway. I would push her down and steal that bag, though.

      • decormaven

That white panel is annoying. It looks like a landing strip.

    • http://www.facebook.com/conysoledad Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

The clutch is awesome, the rest not.
The print is weird, I was quickly scrobbling down and for a second I though I could see her left boob.

      • Toni Busch

I agree about the trompe l’oeil boob effect going on. Strange.

    • CatherineRhodes

Agree with you on every point, mostly the disastrous transition from the runway, which I love.

      • RebeccaKW

Yes, the runway version is wonderful. But the color on Katy is sad, the length is horrible, the white panel is a mistake, and the shoes are a crime. I like Katy’s head, though.

    • Janet B

I’d hold the purse up higher, the bodice is odd. The fabric (and color) is pretty on her, a simple shift or skirt would have been a better use of it.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

At first, I thought the bag was a pocket-like pouch attached to the dress at her knees. Cute purse, ugly dress.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

What really makes it a fail for me is that the collar piece and the plastron on the front no longer match, as they do in the runway version. Both pieces in either the black or the white fabric would have been an improvement.

      • Qitkat

        plastron
You do us all proud, every outfit can be a teaching/learning moment. Thanks!

      • Sarah

Ya know, this doesn’t bother me as much as it probably should, but here’s why – I used to live in Japan, and I see this as a completely Japanese-inspired outfit. They are all about weird juxtapositions and odd drab colors, and the wrong shoe for your outfit. You could roll into a Japanese discount store and buy that dress. On the other hand, that doesn’t say much for Prada, and for chrissake, it ain’t anything like that runway number, so much so that it’s a different dress. So, Hot Elderly Japanese Grandma with Nice Handbag probably wasn’t what she was going for, but that’s what it says to me…

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I get the Tokyo street fashion inspiration. It just doesn’t work in this incarnation.

          Hot Elderly Japanese Grandma!

    • Lolo Andre

Love the model version and I want that clutch so bad

    • thecitysleeps

I like the dress but the shoes and and clutch are horrible and don’t go together at all. And definitely not a Katy get up. Love her hair though!

    • http://www.facebook.com/AdriannaGrezak Adrianna Grężak

Am I the only one who can’t un-see the flower nipple?

      • Kimbolina

That was the first thing I noticed. And it made me hate it even more.

    • carnush

I’m just not a fan of this collection overall. I don’t like the colors and textures, not to mention the shoes.

    • hughman

“Welcome to Benihana. Follow me and I’ll show you to your table.”

    • Catiline

Would’ve been fine (not great, but fine) without that white chest strip. It looks like when toilet paper gets stuck to your shoe…

    • lrober03

All the visual impact of the red vs. black is lost. What a shame.

    • Judy_S

It’s the way that panel seems to be hot-glued onto the front. I guess this is also true in the runway version, but it’s less obvious because of the color. The way she’s holding the purse it looks like it might be glued onto the dress, too–not good.

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

So people other than Elle Fanning are going out in those silly shoes? More’s the pity.

    • shelley514

Her foundation is cakey and about 2 shades too light.

    • Qitkat

I had a weird moment where I thought the bag was actually part of the dress.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

The dress is one design element removal away from being fine. There is no help for those shoes. I like the clutch, quite a bit.

    • tallgirl1204

It would have worked in the runway color, a little shorter. Muted anything is not a good color on Katy. When I first saw it, I thought that the purse was some kind of weird apron-pocket.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

I have officially had too much cold medicine. I really like the shoes and think they would have been a lot cuter if she had painted her toes. Who knew Katy had pretty feet?

As for the dress, the runway model is cool in an art quilt kind of way but this colorway is just tragic.

Now I have to go play with my Lite Brite and see if I can make Khaleesi’s dress.

    • Celandine1

OK now it all makes sense, someone switched the deliveries and Katy got Maggie’s dress by mistake.

    • kimmeister

That bag must have a handle on the other side? Otherwise it looks like her fingers are inside the zipper. Weird.

    • MilaXX

The giant white stripe down the front throws the look off. It might be better if it was a solid burgundy stripe instead. Shoes look like she’s taking fashion tips from Elle Fanning

    • StellaZafella

This is a communications issue of a styling point: The whole look appears somehow strangely…interrupted.

    • DiverK

I’m “meh” on the dress, but those are not your shoes!

    • jetpackdino

The most tragic change is that front vertical strip. The black version on the runway dress looks like a work of art; the one they put on Katy looks like a cheap bib.

    • pop_top

I like the dress, but when she held the clutch that way in front of her, I was terrified that it was a large leather pocket affixed to the front of the dress.
      Also, “No” to those shoes.

    • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

This is one superfluous zebra print and a random silk-screened word away from being something you’d find at the plus-section of Fashion Bug.

    • crash1212

This maybe, possibly, might’ve worked if she’d chosen the runway version – at last that has some great color pop and the insert doesn’t look like a bib – but the one she’s wearing is really awful. Not her color…at all. And those shoes…we should never speak of them again. Cute clutch, though.

    • Pants_are_a_must

In what universe is Katy Perry a Prada girl?

    • Pants_are_a_must

Also, the bag is ten kinds of awful.

    • TheAmericaness

This is weird – as are most things I type – but the photo where she has her hands on her hip, the dress itself looks better, but the overall styling with it is just bad… but since it isn’t her dress I’m not sure anything would make it really work. A werqless wonder. Sigh.

    • Trisha26

Runway version isn’t that much better, that black strip looks tacked on – but at least it matches the neckline.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=9362159 Tracy Walker

If only that white panel had been black, it might have had a chance…

    • http://twitter.com/richiXcore Richard

I’m not going to lie, I kind of love the shoes. I might be going crazy, IDK. The original dress is so beautiful and eye catching, and they destroyed all of that by rendering it in such a drab fabric. Heart breaking.

And that purse looks like it was made out of cheap vinyl. And why is she putting her hands inside of it like that?

    • Little_Olive

What an ugly dress, Miuccia. On and off the runway.

    • ballerinawithagun

Her purse is a pocket??? Hate her shoes but not as much as the runway tabi shoes, ick!!!

    • lobsterlen

Oh so right. I love the runway dress and Katy’s purple version (which isn’t all that different) is such a fail. I think having the red on the steam on that white front piece really helps.

    • jmorino08

The way she’s holding her purse makes it look like she’s got a kangaroo pouch on the front of her dress and she’s hiding a bad manicure in it!

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Wow, that’s bad. And for the first time ever, I’m going to commend her for passing on the pedicure. The less focus called to her feet in those shoes, the better.

    • Belvane

I love the shoes! So pretty and feminine and flattering, compared to the clumsy booties everyone is wearing now, which make even the longest legs look stumpy. The dress, on the other hand, doesn’t quite work.

    • maggiemaybe

I sure do love that dress on the model, though. Cute as hell!

    • alyce1213

      Utterly hideous.

    • http://www.facebook.com/abby.t.tucker Abby Turner Tucker

Those shoes look like Hello Kitty ate tennis shoes, electrical tape, and bandaids and then threw up.

    • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

Serious question: how did she do so much crazy colors, etc., to her hair and it looks so gorgeous now? How does it not look damaged beyond repair?

    • kathrineb

I totally agree! The runway version looks sophisticated and stylish and her version looks homemade.
The color of hers is so depressing and it looks like her version of the dress got a hole in it and they went ‘quick put some white fabric over the hole and people will think its a bib’. Awkward.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

The dress is not so horrible, but the white strip looks like an iron on patch. The shoes aren’t bad, but they don’t work with the dress. Cute clutch. Overall, it misses the mark.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Cookie.Taz Aisa Ginger Jake Psenicnik

would have been better if the front panel was still black.

    • guest2visits

Worst thing about it is trading that black panel for white. And the clutch looks like a make-up pouch.
Agree RW look has so much more style. Kate’s is almost frumpy.

    • http://twitter.com/frozenovaries Bellybama

      I love those shoes!!!

    • JtotheK

Hello? its a PRADA EVENT… so OBVIOUSLY she would wear PRADA to support PRADA, DUHHHH
