Julianne Hough in Carolina Herrera

Posted on May 06, 2013

Because every gal deserves an “Attagirl” when she – finally, and against all odds – gets it (mostly) right.

Julianne Hough attends EIF Women’s Cancer Research Fund’s 16th Annual ‘An Unforgettable Evening’ presented by Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills, California in a Carolina Herrera dress accessorized with a L. K. Bennett ‘Alexia’ Clutch and Stuart Weitzman pumps.

We’re not convinced she’s working the shape as effectively as it could be, and the look is both very simple and slightly mature for her, but this is the best we’ve ever seen her look. Which is kind of sad, because, like we said, it’s a pretty simple look. But simple might just be the only thing she’s capable of working effectively. It’s no crime. Once she figures it out, it’ll be a huge relief to her and she can step out confidently in classic shapes, secure in the knowledge that her unembellished self will remain free of criticism from online bitches like us.

We’re not holding our breath though.

Also: we hate her hair. And her lack of jewelry. There’s “simple” and then there’s just plain old “underdone,” dear. But this is encouraging! Maybe you can work your way up to earrings and open-toed shoes later, but STAY ON THIS COURSE. Now that Ryan’s no longer picking out your dresses and tarting you up like you’re at the Grand Ol’ Opry, you have free reign to discover what you can do, style-wise.

But Keep It Simple, Sweetie.

I studied that fourth picture for a long time before finally figuring out that the thing that looks like her knee is actually her calf muscle. I was relieved. Anyway, it’s an OK dress on her. Too long and too much volume, but a pretty color.

  • jmorino08

What is happening on her chest? It looks like she’s wearing a sports bra or some other boob-smushing contraption. Lift and separate, dear!

Also, do something about that hair!

    • MoHub

It’s simply too tight across the bust. Note the way the right strap is gapping. Not a dress for a gal with boobs unless it’s cut more generously in front with better darts.

      • jmorino08

You’re right. And I don’t think she’s even that busty? Who did they make that dress for anyway? Tight across the bust, but loose across her stomach. I think that’s a big part of why it’s so unflattering!

    • jetpackdino

She’s got some seriously bushy chest hair in pic #2. Burt Reynolds would be proud.

  • Mismarker

She’s looking a little Aniston here and the dress is smooshing her tender niblets. Oh, well. Thumbs up for the softer makeup alone.

    • Spicytomato1

I’ve been seeing the resemblance to Aniston for a while now. They could easily play sisters, I think.

  • MilaXX

I like the dress, shoes & bag but the head looks under done to me. If she wants that hair she needs a better face, not heavy duty spackle, but a stronger lip would have kicked this up a notch.

  • Stubenville

Next step – jewelry, earrings, a watch, anything.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

It’s hard to go wrong with a red dress when you’re a tanned, blue-eyed blonde. But I hate the no jewelry look and I totally agree on her needing a stronger lip.

  • SewingSiren

This simpler the better for this one. She looks great.

  • For a relatively interesting dress, she has made it downright boring.

  • BrooklynBomber

The purse is cute. That is all.

This is just barely ok. I know it’s a Carolina Herrera (whom I love), but except for the color, it doesn’t seem to be doing much for her — or vice versa. For starters, it doesn’t fit properly (the bust) and it’s too long. I guess looking like a midwestern bridesmaid in a borrowed dress IS an improvement over her usual fashion missteps. Makeup is nice, but she might have secured her hair back to finish the look and avoid stick hair.

  • It’s squashing her FLAT on top. But it’s a definite improvement on her past efforts, so I’ll second the “attagirl,” if without an exclamation point.

    • EdithP

Yes, what is up with the strapped down bosom?

  • lilibetp

That shade of red is pretty, but better on the fair-skinned model.

  • Janet B

Lovely outfit, but Julianne looks like she’s playing dress-up.
    Love the clutch
Her make up and hair are pretty and age appropriate!

  • Pennymac

I love everything with the exception of the “just got out of the pool” hair.

  • It’s a bad fit, and she’s too short for the shape of the dress. I’ve seen her in beautiful gowns on the red carpet at award shows. I’ve seen no evidence that she has bad taste. But this dress is bad.

    I love the clutch!

Her skin looks weird and her face is shiny. I don’t like her hair.

I’m curious about her private relationship with Ryan. It’s none of my business; that’s for sure…. I see her as somebody ambitious who saw Ryan as a huge stepping stone. She has a wild side, and I’m guessing that Ryan is too straight-laced for her. But my brother sees her as a young girl who can easily be taken advantage of by someone older. Our opinions really tell more about us than anything else.

  • decormaven

Aaargh! That hair with that dress. Why?

  • I absolutely loved the Carolina Herrera pumps that the model has on, paired with the dress. That pop of gold in the back really brought something to the outfit. Perhaps if she had worn those shoes, some gold statement pieces of jewelry and washed the oil out of her hair, this could have been a hit!

  • kimmeister

She finally got the brows right! Shame that her legs are 5x darker than the rest of her body.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

No on the open toed shoes. Because before you know it, we’ll be seeing peep toes with thick soles and then where will we be?

  • Patricia Gillett

That this poorly fitted Herrera over sunburned skin, post-gym hair, and too-big pumps is a personal best for her, tells you everything you need to know about how she typically dresses!

  • Imasewsure

She looks cute and young. Agreed about the limitations of the look but overall a really good direction. Love the color on her and hope she keeps improving with these more simple looks

  • jetpackdino

In that second pic she looks like she has chest hair. I know it’s just the writing on the backdrop behind her, but still.

    • Mismarker

Hilarious. Now that’s all I can see!

  • The clutch is cute.

  • I only like the dress. I hate all the rest, she kind of ruined a wonderful piece of clothing.

  • I love it. Hands down her best look. She’s stunning. Who knew.
And uncles, her eyes are her jewelry, they’re sparkling. Which begs the question…when these Hollywood types breakup why does it seem like the “mourning period” is so much shorter than it is for the rest of us?

  • TLJezebel

I see she’s still sporting that DWTS spray tan.

  • aahlife

There is a lack of care to the details to help this to work. The bow on the model is more on the side, and the center knot is skillfully laid, not smooched clumsily.

  • Uncles, I think you are being incredibly generous and kind. I’ll leave it at that.

  • Rebecca Jay

I loveLOVE that she always looks so healthy and happy.

  • formerlyAnon

There’s a reason the model is photographed from the side.

    • Qitkat

Zaactly. The dress doesn’t work at all from the front, like her hip is massively out of joint. And the bodice is oddly flat, like her hair. Not a simple dress to wear at all.

  • Amazing how she gets an “attagirl” for dressing a little bit closer to her own age.

  • Kikishua

I like this, but the bow is really badly tied. The clutch is yummy.
