The fit in the bodice is poisoning my soul. Would’ve been fine otherwise.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Truly! A simple interior tuck around the waistline would have solved that issue. All she hadda do was ask. I could have done it in twenty minutes.

      • Beardslee

Is this the kind of thing that you can just baste in? I’ve often thought a little bit of temporary tailoring would do wonders for all these ill fitting gowns, if you can take out the adjustments and return the clothing to the designer in its original condition.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Absolutely! In this case, a simple tuck basted in, internally, right at the seam line of the bodice would cure all those messy crumples, and could be picked out with ease, later.

      • AmeliaEve

I’m not sure that would totally save it with the heavy pendant on top. The necklace already hits her about two inches two low. It should nestle just above her breasts — this way it looks like a third nipple in that side view. And either way, it needs a perfectly smooth surface behind it.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Well, if that pendant necklace hit her where it ought to, it would be no issue. Its far too long, as you said. But the alteration I referred to would at least deal with the insane mess happening around the waist.

          • Beardslee

I think stylists should employ people like you but alas, a clinical eye is sadly lacking when it comes to borrowed dresses and bright lights. Just think how much better everyone would look, if someone had the oomph to say, “this doesn’t hang right.”

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Fit should be The First Thing they consider in a borrowed frock.

preach. it would have been perfect — and a lesson, maybe, to jessica biel on how to wear a statement necklace — if the fit … fit.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Again with the slightly too heavy makeup, but she really looks beautiful here. Simple, un-complicated gowns are really her friend. And I love her necklace.

    • NinaBoo

Is there a BOGO sale on blush, of which I am unaware?

      • drdarke

So – any truth to the rumors that Jessica Chastain will be starring in Yet Another Remake of H. Rider Haggard’s SHE…?

  • j_anson

Not sure this is her dress.

  • Jonquil

Love it in theory. Too bad it doesn’t fit her nicely.

  • Judih1

bland love the necklace, just not with this dress looks sisterwifeish

  • almostcrime

oh cool, she decided to wear the heart of the ocean.

    • drdarke

Is that like The Heart of the TARDIS, only different, @almostcrime:disqus ?

  • http://twitter.com/Hussified Coleen

We are getting a little Granny Freeze with that forehead. Style-wise, I like the color but wish it was a true boat neck instead of that weird backwards v.

  • homofascist

That is Versace? It is so…plain. And covered up. Where is the neon glowsticks? Or the cutouts?

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

And the metal bits! Don’t forget the metal bits!!

  • Coolekat

Bad fit and shiny face but the jewelry is pretty

  • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

    Aimee Semple McPherson rises again.

  • poggi

This is rather matronly and she looks a little bit like a nun–a fabulous bedazzled reverend mother but still.

    • JosephLamour

      Guinevere realness.

  • TheAmericaness

“How do you solve a problem like Maria…”

    • DeborahJozayt

Maria’s chest didn’t quite slouch like that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/conysoledad Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

I’m surprised that kind of design can actually look boring. But it does.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

So it seems as though that necklace was a gift to Elizabeth Taylor from Richard Burton. This tidbit of information makes me love it even more.

  • Diego!

    She is the next Galadriel!!!!

  • Mitzi_Paynor

That necklace was Elizabeth Taylor’s! I don’t know if I can share the link or not, but if you search “Elizabeth Taylor Bulgari sapphire necklace” you can see images of her wearing it. They must have bought it at auction last year.

  • SewingSiren

Refined and venue appropriate. The necklace is a particularlly nice touch.

  • MilaXX

I’m not feeling the necklace. I’m sure it was added for color to keep it from looking bridal, but I think it ruins the line of the dress and somehow makes the dress look a bit heavy. Hair and makeup are pretty though.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

But it’s Elizabeth Taylor’s necklace!! Seriously. I’ve just turned into a Liz fangurl.

      • MilaXX

Still don’t like it with this dress.

        • mjude

in the close up i thought it looked fine but i agree milaxx about the dress. the necklace deserved much better.

          • demidaemon

It’s too long and sits too low on her. If it was closer to the neckline of the dress, I don’t think it would be so distracting.

          • AmeliaEve

Totally. In that side view it looks like a giant third boob.

  • VicD

I see they’ve recovered the “Heart of the Ocean” from Titanic. Either that, or she’s going in costume as a medieval princess.

  • barbarienne

“I am Zoot’s identical twin sister, Dingo.”

    • eowyn_of_rohan

      I love you.

    • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

      Well played.

  • BrooklynBomber

No likey. I’m not seeing Jessica Chastain; I’m seeing “Versace gown accessorized with Bulgari jewelry”; honestly, she looks here like a showroom model.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

In this case, it IS a matter of “look at the jewelry! Oh yes, she has clothes on, too.”

      • BrooklynBomber

Yes, I suppose so. I guess the necklace came first, and a dress was found to show it off.

  • Christine Hart

So I just saw the top of this on another website which talked about the fact that she’s borrowing from the Liz Taylor collection and wanted a no-frills dress to highlight the necklace; but then I saw the dress and how poorly fit it is and I cried. She needed this dress http://news.instyle.com/2012/05/08/kate-middleton-roland-mouret/

  • cmb123

necklace is gorgeous, makeup is gorgeous, hair is gorgeous, fit is a crime.

  • Cloveradams

I’m just getting a Wife of the Cult Leader vibe from this outfit – Chastain always seems to look better in richer tones, and the combination of this characterless tablecloth dress with the Baby Jane-level blusher and a necklace that is reminiscent of something in Myst that needed to be pressed in order to enter a secret chamber is a little jarring.

  • AlisonS

So, what her stylists are trying to say is that Jessica is leaving showbiz to become a sister-wife to a very wealthy man?

  • Brittney Garneau

    TITANIC NECKLACE! No, girl.

  • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

So I understand that the necklace once belonged to Elizabeth Taylor via Richard Burton….

  • Anplica Fiore

The necklace looks like a 3rd blue tit.

  • Lesley

looks like she found “The Heart of the Ocean” that Rose threw over board, always wondered what happened to that thing!

    • adi

i thaught britney got it ….

Press the Big Friendly Blue Button and the TARDIS will appear!

  • ThaliaMenninger

It’s the Angelina Barbie, red-headed model.

  • PastryGoddess

    Hair – yes
Face – punched by a baby
    Necklace – of course
    The rest – Girl please

  • Guest

She’s wearing the necklace like it’s the Lord Mayor of London’s ceremonial chain. It needs to be nestled between her breasts, with the nonchalance of the stinking rich, as the great lady Elizabeth Taylor did herself: http://img2.timeinc.net/instyle/images/2011/GalxMonth/032311-elizabeth-taylor-jewelry4-400×500.jpg

  • Deedles

Gosh, I hate it when I get TP stuck in my underwear and don’t realize it.

  • crash1212

The significance, of course, is that’s Liz’s necklace given to her by Burton on her 40th birthday. Nice she paired it with such an understated dress.

    • Tr16ia

Yes, and I tried to post a photograph of Liz wearing the necklace (and doing it better, may I say) but my comment is “in moderation.” :-/ Anyway, google “Elizabeth Taylor, Bulgari, 1969, necklace.” That necklace needs to be nestled lovingly between some breasts, not worn like a Lord Mayor’s chain of office.

      • l_c_ann

Like a frumpy Lord Mayor’s chain of office.

    • marlie

This is why I like the dress. The necklace is the star of this show.

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

It’s a nice thought, but toooooo plain. In my humble blah blah blah…

  • AlexisPayne

Is she the high priestess of the temple of Athena???

  • quiltrx

Liz Taylor called–said she ADORES your necklace!
But that dress is pretty unflattering–AND it looks like hot, clingy fabric. Ick.

  • Buffy

That necklace is all kinds of wrong for that dress.

  • Sarah Thomas

I’m sorry, anyone who wears Liz Taylor’s necklace to a Liberace premiere is my new favorite person ever.

    • marlie

      Precisely.

  • Anniebet

Uh, so everyone on her team thought we would be so dazzled by the big (Liz Taylor, OMG!) rock on her chest that we wouldn’t notice how badly that dress fits?

  • MissMariRose

It looks kinda new school princessy. Like something a European princess would wear to a royal wedding or inauguration.

  • DarkWillow

When I saw “Chastain in Versace” in the header, I did not expect frumpy, but the bad fit makes it look frumpy. And poorly made, somehow. Does she maybe need a better bra? I feel like her boobs should be a bit higher.

  • http://www.facebook.com/bert.keeter Bert Keeter

    Welcome to Dumpyland!

  • nannypoo

That is one awful dress. The fabric looks cheap and the fit is way off. She’s so pretty. How damn hard can it be to find a dress?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

    SNORE.

  • conniemd

I think the problem with the dress is the textile. It looks like some kind of knit. Knit and flowing Grecian silhouette just don’t go together well. I like the idea with the jewelry, though as it needs a simple dress, just not a frumpy ill-fitting one

  • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Caterina Maria

My SCA persona would like that necklace very much. Otherwise the look is nothing to write home about.

  • PLH

I can’t look at anything besides those sapphires-my preciouses!!!

  • LaSylphide

Think I’ll go rob a bank so I can afford the necklace and ring. Make that two banks. Dress is ultra blah, and it makes her look stout.

  • CPK1

this! I thought mayoral chain the minute I saw it styled like this.

  • JP

Oh honey, unfriend everyone who let you walk out in public in that unfitted sack.

  • l_c_ann

Oh, Jesus. If Jessica ever sees a picture of herself beside that picture of Miss Taylor, she’ll never come out of her room again.

The ultimate definition of a Movie Star and a wannabe.

  • kimiakay

Oh Ms. Chastain. You are a beautiful woman. You are wearing Liz Taylor’s necklace that her beloved husband gave to her. It is a beautiful necklace. And that is the dress you chose? No. Just no. Just because that dress has a train doesn’t make it the proper background for that necklace. And the dress doesn’t look like it fits you properly. You can do it, we’ve seen you do it.

  • bd73

matronly. completely skims her figure. and that medieval amulet…

  • TSkot

Perfect dress to showcase the necklace, but could use a much better fit.

  • racrobin

I would cut 10 bitches Navy Seal style for that necklace. Glad she just threw on some nearby drapes and her robe belt to better show it off.

  • AmeliaEve

    Bingo.

  • Tracy_Flick

How did she not notice that it doesn’t fit?

  • jw_ny

If Maid Marion realness was the look she was going for, she sure succeeded!

  • kalisa

    Superfriends necklace

  • tereliz

I get that she wanted to go with something plain to act as a canvas for what is quite possibly the most amazing sapphire necklace EVUH, but the fit of the bodice is so distracting I can barely focus on the jewels! Too bad!

  • PeaceBang

I have this story about how Sister Jessica met Liz Taylor while doing some kind of AIDS ministry and Liz loaned her some bling.

  • librarygrrl64

Awful shoes, but the rest is an improvement on some of the things she wears.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Versace does grandmother gowns?!? Since when?

  • Jake

Looks like it’s made of muslin!
