Jennifer Lawrence Doubleshot

Posted on May 20, 2013

On the red carpet, as in life, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Let’s start with the win.

Jennifer Lawrence attends ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ Party during The 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival in a Christian Dior dress paired with Manolo Blahnik shoes and Chopard jewelry.

Now, we’ll grant that the hem on this skirt is really weird and unflattering. But the rest of the look works so well for us that we’re willing to overlook that one element. She looks so much better in white than in the black that Dior keeps putting her in. We adore that flounce with the graphic on it, which works really well as a juxtaposition against her “just a regular girl” persona. If someone like Natalie Portman or Anne Hathaway wore this dress, we’d find it too precious, but on Jen, it works just fine for us. The bright pink pumps help bring the look to a more playful, less snooty area. And her hair and makeup look great.

This, on the other hand, isn’t remotely working for us. She’s tried to work this kind of look before and we have to say, she might want to skip attempting the formal ladypant. It doesn’t seem to work for her. It doesn’t help that her hair and makeup look drab, or that the shoes are too focus-pulling, or that the details of the look are obscured in pictures, leaving her a with a very odd “stomach tumor” silhouette. Honey, let us never speak of this one again.

I like the white dress, but I am so sick of seeing her in strapless gowns.

  • PastryGoddess

I am taking up a collection to pay a gay to teach her how to pose. Anyone else wanna help a sister out?

    • Sara__B

Yes. She hasn’t got the poise, polish, or POSTURE required for Dior yet.

    • misstressofsylar

I’m in. also, can we start one for getting her out of Dior? it’s a mismatch. she’s always looked better in CK, like that dress she wore at the VF party

      • werika

I agree. Dior, these days, is difficult enough to wear for even the most self important/indulgent lady stars let along JLaw who is anything but. She looked way better in that amazing steel gray CK she wore to the VF party or the simple red CK she wore to the Oscars a couple years back. She looked like a bombshell on those occasions. Sleek, simple silhouettes are best for her. Raf Simon’s more often than not fussy construction do nothing for her youthful, all american appeal. His designs make her look awkward. I am dreading the impending JLaw-in-Dior Hunger Games pole dance.

  • Emily Rose

No one should ever be allowed to put on that top.

    • drdarke

Jennifer Lawrence Will Deliver – ZEUS’S BABY! Co-Starring Russell Crowe as Zeus – and Liam Neeson as Hippocrates! Fall, 2014 – in IMAX and 3D.

I normally don’t mind her much in black slacks – but dear child, That Is Not Your Look. Maybe a Wonder Woman T-shirt and a demin mini, if you’re going to keep posing like you’re ready to take off and fight crime….

Not so sure I like the White dress that much better – but at least it’s not a fashion nightmare on her.

  • Latin Buddy

I think she is a modern day Jody Foster/Julia Roberts. She has enough edge and intelligence about her in the Foster mode while being girl-next-door as Roberts. In short, I love her no matter what she wears…even overlooking that black disaster

    • aeb1986

She kind of looks like Jennifer Anniston in the black getup, no? With that hair color and the tan

    • j_anson

      Heh! She is pretty awesome.

I can’t wait till she gets a bit overexposed and/or goes after an Oscar a bit too hard and we all have to suddenly decide we hate her.

    • drdarke

I like her a lot, @google-d7de366d260bec016100fbe817d686cd:disqus – OTOH, some of the outfits they put her in…?

  • Griffinqueen

Ladies, do you long for that “spare tire” look? Do you dream of a perfect “football” shape?

Then try Pantsuits with multiple unnecessary peplums!
    Get yours today!

    • Introspective

  • You guys, don’t fault her for the 2nd look. She HAD TO wear it — her grandma knitted it for her with arthritic hands. Oh. It’s Dior Fall ’13? Oh.

    • Introspective

      and NAILED again.

look 2 is a turd of an outfit. seriously. especially about the midsection. and face and hair are done (or not) to match.

  • I love, love, love the white dress. She looks gorgeous and fresh and her hair and makeup look done but not *done*.

  • She looks ready to kick someone’s ass in her second look. Rightfully so, that shit is dreadful.
    Totally loving the first look.

ETA: She really makes me want to cut off my hair. But I would have to straighten it every day and that is never gonna happen.

  • Perditax

She’s always come across like she has a sense of humour, yet somehow she wore that top with a straight face?!

  • It’s a macrame peplum. I think I just died.

  • NoGovernmentName

I hate peplums (pepla?). I don’t think they look flattering on anyone and wish they would go away. That said, I don’t hate the black as much at TLo did. JLaw always looks kinda uncomfortable in formal wear, and the pants thing is no exception.

    • And its a short top. It’s so…strange…

      • NoGovernmentName

If it were just a little less poofy (which just autocorrected to “poopy,” how fitting) it would be OK. I am not sure why she is always stuffed into these strapless tops, when they make her look all defensive.

        • RebeccaKW

I agree, I think the biggest issue with the black number is the fit. The fit in the pants is terrible. They need to be shorter and snugger to give a better base for that top. And the top…seems different on the model. More ruffles? I don’t know, but it’s better. Not great, but better.

    • porcupie

I much prefer the white, but I think her hair is miles better in the black.

    • MoHub

The only women who can wear pepla—thank you!—well are those without hips. Hipless Vanna White, for example, gets the illusion of hips when she wears a peplum.

  • Lori

I like the white dress, but the skirt seems a skosh too tight, which is making the area around the middle lay wrong and look sort of puffy. The less said about that black top the better.

  • I love her too much to see her in this shittery. That black is as bad as it gets.

    • snarkalicious

“Shittery” is my new favorite word. Thank you very much.

  • jw_ny

Love her hair in the first set. Very fresh look overall, without being cutesy.

    2nd look…egads! nobody should ever wear that…that…thing…

  • flamingoNW

    LOVE the first one.

  • TAT93

WHY do I feel like Dior has been sending her the exact same silhouette with minor modifications? It’s aways a tube top it seems…ALSO Can someone please slap some colors on this girl? She’s too young to wear monochrome all the time.

  • Tatiana Luján

the problem isn’t the pant, it’s the top.

  • Anniebet

Ok, look number I adore. She’s radiant even with the weird skirt.

Look number two… I’ll get to her in a minute, but I am so struck by the shoddy setup for this shot. Couldn’t Lionsgate arrange something better to promote Hunger Games than a sheet on the floor and some cheapo easels? Beyond tacky.

But then, so is that ridiculous thing she’s wearing on her midsection. She looks so uncomfortable, like she knows she’s got gum stuck to the bottom of her shoes and her dress is hiked up in the back with toilet paper trailing behind, metaphorically speaking, of course. At least she isn’t miserable ’cause someone else is wearing the same outfit.

  • BuffaloBarbara

Why didn’t they pick the drop cloth up before they started taking celebrity pictures? I don’t understand.

  • Sara__B

Dior’s not her brand. Not that she can’t EVER wear Dior (she looked wonderful in her Oscars gown), but in general, she really is too “regular girl” right now.

  • raininmai

It’s not really the pants that are the problem with the look. It’s everything else.

  • wildemoose

Is that top…crocheted? Oh, Jennifer. I love you but no.

  • M. H. Leader

I think the pants in the second look work fine..and even the pumps sort of…but ONLY if that top is taken somewhere, de-vermined to remove the odd animal clutching her tightly around the waist, and replaced with a fun, playful COLORFUL top with maybe a touch of some pink somewhere.

But you gotta love Jen for wearing the same shoes to two different photo calls. Did ANY other lady-star do that? Much less one of the highest paid actresses in the business? thrift, thrift, thrift. No doubt it cut down on the excess baggage fees to get to Cannes…

  • PeaceBang

I must have been so delighted by the adorable first look that I didn’t really mind the second one too much.

  • Dear Raf Simons: this black look is not pretty. It’s Dior, it should not be that hard to make pretty things out of that legacy. Between you and Bill Gaytten, there have been far too many missteps.
I will give you, Raf, that you have made many more beautiful things than ugly things (that white dress has a lovely air). But stop lending the ugly things out. That black top needs to be burned.

  • bellafigura1

Both, no, but she’s still a cutie pie.

  • Not a fan of the second outfit either, but I get it. She has worn about 236 variations of the “pretty dress” in the last year or two. I’d be jumping on anything that’s a bit different as well, especially if “pretty dress” really isn’t her world at all.

    • And is she contractually obligated by Dior to not wear color any more?

  • JasmineAM

I hate both, and her hair is terrible. I love her so this kills me to say.

  • Sunraya

I hate that waiter napkin hanging off the white dress.

  • PastryGoddess

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I miss John Galiano’s Dior. That is the Dior she’s perfect for. Not this sad monochromatic Dior

  • She looks really uncomfortable in the second look.

And she also needs to stop wearing strapless things. She looks fine in them, but it seems like she’s been wearing nothing but strapless gowns (or tops) for months now.

  • That top looks like the knitted/crocheted toilet paper roll covers that camouflaged the spares in my grandmother’s bathroom.

  • NC_Meg

I hope the person that put her in the second outfit is catching some fire right now. Yikes.

  • guest2visits

Yay- she is fantastic in that white Dior dress. The second one really lets her down in that the crochet top is wilty and looks like it would be better off with a pair of jeans. The pants fit fine but don’t really do anything special either.
The 2nd outfit makes me think her stylists must not actually be SEEING her for what she is. Alot of missed potential.

  • The first look – everything is great, except that the dress should be a tad shorter. The second look, her hair looks a little fried, and I like the ladypants, but the TOP is ruining the look for me.

  • SewingSiren

I like the white. The black looks like something Lena Dunham would hesitate to wear.

  • I am really loving her hair right now. I unfortunately have thin hair that refuses to grow past my shoulders, and I’m pretty sure I would look like a 10 year old boy with a pixie haircut, so it’s so refreshing to see a ladystar with an achievable yet gorgeous hairstyle.

  • pattycap11

she’s really pretty but i don’t much like anything they’ve been putting her in lately. she’s an ex-model and really popular right now, so this should be easy. as it is, i’d rather see her in jeans and a flannel top than in formal looks that don’t suit her.

    • Magatha

“…I’d rather see her in jeans and a flannel top….” That’s almost exactly what I was thinking, too, except for a black t-shirt instead of a flannel shirt, on account of almost-summer. There’s nothing wrong with her, her face, her make-up, her hair – it’s all the stupid lame outfit. She knows it, too, but what are you going to do? It’s her job.

      • pattie capet

a black t-shirt, that would be awesome. i bet some “gal on the street” sights would provide some relief to these unrelentingly sad outfits.

  • No one looks attractive with all that junk around their waist! No one!

  • barbarienne

I’m glad to see she has fractionally improved at posing. Keep working at it, honey! You’re getting there!

  • MilaXX

Love the first look, but she’s too normal sized for that top in the second look. That’s a top only waif thin folks like Kiera Knightly could get away with.

  • BrooklynBomber

For me the problem with the first dress is the length–it’s too long on her. Or too short, whichever way you want to look at it. I like the second one, too, though. She’s so cute.

  • 3boysful

I LOVE her hair and makeup in the white dress. Probably the best I’ve seen her. But I can’t sign off on the hip flap. To my eye, it’s a cute, hand-painted napkin that remained caught in her lap when she rose from the table.

  • Ummy

I never understand the desire to have strange bunches of fabric at the waist (or also the backside). Why add all the extra volume in an area where most women don’t want that kind of attention. I wouldn’t mind the black look if the ruffly part was down hugging her hips and not some strange bizarre tummy bump. Although then it might look a little juvenile.

  • Lisa Utter

That second Dior model looks like Justin Bieber.

  • quiltrx

Love the first look (and I agree with everyone, let’s get her some posing lessons!).
The second though…yikes. The pose says “I am trying simultaneously to keep this heavy-ass top up and avoid cameltoe with this weird pants.”

  • I don’t like the quarter/third peplum pocket thingie. It looks like indecision on the part of the designer.

  • Second look would have worked if the pant was shorter and slimmer. And the violent red shoes were those gorge diagonal strap Diors.

  • MartyBellerMask

I like the second one. I just wish it were a different color so I could see the detail.
And I love that she is wearing colorful shoes. But seriously, that second pair almost hurts my eyes, they are so bright!

    Also, she is freaking gorgeous.

  • titaness25

  • lrober03

Crochet around the waist should always be a no-no

  • Crystal

I’m loving her haircut!!!! So much better than the oppressive bangs. She looks so pretty.

  • That black top looks like the things my Grandma used to knit to cover a roll of toilet paper

  • The good and the horrible.

  • librarygrrl64

She is a classic hourglass, and that’s why the first look works so damned well, and the second doesn’t.
