IN or OUT: Solange Knowles at “The Great Gatsby” Screening

Posted on May 06, 2013

We don’t know, you guys. We love ourselves some Miss Solange, but, well… see for yourself:

Solange Knowles attends Pre-Met Gala Special Screening Of ‘The Great Gatsby’ in New York City in a striped peplum dress paired with Burberry Prorsum wedges.

Burberry Prorsum Crayford Ankle-strap Wedge Shoes

It’s … kind of awkward-looking to us. We admit, the look has some serious initial impact, but the more we look at it, the less we like the shape of it, the more her boobs feel kind of incongruously (for a dress like this) placed center stage, and the more we think those shoes, while fabulous, are totally wrong for the dress. It’s just not working for us at all, kittens. Not even the makeup. The hair is fab, but you knew that already.

Time to make your voice heard:

Vote Now!

OUT! That’s a lotta boob, a lotta hair, a lotta skirt, and a lotta stripes. Too rich for my blood.

The Minions with Opinions were not impressed with Rita Ora’s attempt at doing “twee.” Y’all voted her look OUT.

  • Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!

    • And Out.

    • bxbourgie

That made me literally laugh out loud!

    • I was literally about to write that. Yeah, lady Beetlejuice — especially with the tired makeup — so out.

    • Beetlejuice it is! Ship this off to Winona Ryder (or she may just steal it)!

      • drdarke

The outfit and styling are going in too many different directions at once – it looks like it should work for her, but it just doesn’t.

        Sadly, OUT.

  • BrooklynBomber

She’s always great in the thumbnails, but not always so great in the scroll down. It’s not horrible, but, yes, awkward. Too short, too high-waisted, too peplumed for those wide stripes (or vice versa).

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

And then those hiddy wedge shoes! OUT!

  • thecitysleeps

OUT OUT OUT. Sorry Baby Knowles, I can’t with those shoes and that weird frilly thing on your hips.

    • MoHub

I couldn’t get as far as the hips and the shoes; I was stuck in the cleavage.

  • Um, no. Sometimes geometrics compete with curves, and sometimes they defeat them. This would be the latter.

  • I love stripes. Really adore them. But when the stripe! is so bold, I don’t think you also need the peplum! and leg-o-mutton! sleeves, and boobs! and all the other distracting elements. The shoes are also fab, but they are not for this dress. OUT.

  • jetpackdino

Can we do a Freaky Friday-esque switcharoo where she gets Katy Perry’s failed Givenchy dress and Katy gets this one?

    • Kirsten Kirsten

You, my friend, are a genius!

      • jetpackdino

*blush* Thank you! You made my day. : )

  • MilaXX

Small OUT. A swing and a miss for me. I think it needs a skinny belt to cinch the waist, especially if you’re gonna put the tits on display. I don’t hate the shoe, but I think the face needs a warmer lip. I know this sounds matchy, but I think a lip color similar to the shoe would tie things together.

  • MarissaLG

I’m gonna give this an IN, but she can do a lot better. She doesn’t look like she loves it.

  • Lizzyisi

Peplum OR full skirt. Not both. With the shoulders, I’d be inclined to pick a straighter skirt.

Those shoes are awesome and deserve better. I guess I fall to “out”.

  • aeb1986

My first thought was if the hair and shoes were different I might like it the dress better. It’s hard to tell which of the items in this outfit are throwing me off…but I’m thinking that makes it an Out

  • surfergirl70

I like the idea of the dress, but it stumpifies her. I could be down with the shoes if the rest of the look worked, but sadly, it doesn’t. OUT

  • bxbourgie

The dress has too much going on and the shoes are all wrong for that dress. Sorry SunAngel. This is an out.

  • Lolo Andre

  • amber_julene

Out. If it had a wide black belt instead of a peplum, I would’ve ruled differently. Maybe not fair, though; my hatred for peplum runs bone-deep.

  • steeg of their own

This dress needs to make some choices. EITHER keep the V neck but make it two inches less deep to alleviate concerns about the strength of her doublesided tape; OR keep the peplum but do something way less funky and attention-grabbing with the neckline. If it went with one or the other, it would still be an eye-popping dress since that fabric is a statement in itself, but it might feel less like a quadruple-front barrage on the senses.

    • ampg

Yes – this dress makes me kind of sad because of all the wasted potential. It could’ve been a real showstopper. I would lose the peplum and make it floor-length, personally. But as-is, it’s OUT. Sorry, Solange – you’re still amazing.

  • Out. Really. Really. OUT.

  • OUT. One of the worst looks i’ve seen her in. It looks like it doesn’t fit her right, too much gratuitous boobage…nothing about it actually works.

  • gabbilevy

It pains me to vote Miss Solange out, but this is a low mark for her.

  • Janet B

    It doesn’t even fit her.

  • VioletFem

The fit is just wrong. The peplum sits to high and there is just way too much boob exposed. OUT.

  • Out. Sideboob to the extreme.

  • Anathema_Device

I just bought a dress with paneled stripes (a casual, knit dress, though), so I’m inclined to like this. But the boobage and peplum kind of ruin the impact of the intersecting stripes. Also, shoes are wrong. I’ll vote Out, even though there is something to like about this.

ETA: if anyone cares, this is the dress I bought, in the navy/mint stripe:

  • Joyce VG

This looks all kinds of odd. OUT.

  • Dan_In_NYC

So I like the fabric – how it ended up in dress form, not so much. From a normally strong performer on the style front, I’m with you. This is a thud.

  • CommentsByKatie

I usually will get behind the a crazy/tacky dress, because for me there rarely is such a thing as too much. I even love the Beetlejuice vibe and the bright shoes. But those stripes are obliterating her shape and making her look like slumped, segmented, short…just awful. This designer should be set on fire.

  • OUT. It’s wearing her.

  • filmcricket

Scroll-down fug. I thought we might be going somewhere kinda 40s and fabulous with the shoulders, and then it all went sideways. And frontways, and all other ways. Also those shoes are hideous. Out.

  • Sally Brownson

Out. It’s just too awkward. It could’ve worked if the neck slit weren’t so deep.

  • Lori

There is a lot going on there and too much of it is not good. I think Solange can pull off a lot of lots that the vast majority of women couldn’t, but this isn’t one of them. (Which leads to the question of who in the world could wear this, and the suspicion that the answer is “no one.”) OUT

  • teensmom99

IN. Not for mortals but IN.

  • It’s a “looked good on paper” look. The concept, the colors are great, but it’s just awkward in real life.

  • Damn, OUT. I want to like it but the proportions are not right for her body–it looks like the waist is too high. And the fussiness at the waist is not great either. Poor shoe choice, too, yes.

    • 3boysful

Exactly. Plus, the boobage-peplum-stripes everywhichaway thing is a bridge too far. The shoes are what the wicked witch wears for a night on the town.

  • This is so OUT for me. The dress is just awkward and unflattering. I love the shoes, but not with this dress.

  • SewingSiren

IN. She’s headed toward Tildaism in my book.

  • ringthing

    Too much. OUT.

  • random_poster

  • Oh, I hate her. It’s like the Gwyneth Paltrow syndrome. This one has to show up every friggen place.

  • PeggyOC

Out. Too much going on, and not in a crazy-Solange way.

  • kaycem

the peplum is a big problem for me. i also dislike the shoes, but i’m very much anti-wedge so i’m unsure if it’s that or if these are truly horrendous. since solange is the queen of Pop of Color dressing, i think she’d have done a bright lip — to the look’s benefit — if different shoes were in play. so basically, i blame everything on the shoes lol.

i don’t think i can out someone on shoes alone, and i like the impact of the chevron-like pattern. IN, but barely.

  • OUT. Kill the peplum, fix the fit at the waist and change the shoes.

  • OUT.

  • I agree with all of your criticisms and will also add that I think this is the worst I’ve seen her hair look. Too tall on the top and shorter on the sides giving her head a really long and odd shape. Beetlejuice is OUT

  • Out. The dress is badly proportioned for her, making her appear insanely short waisted, while also giving her a case of boob droop more understandable in a woman MUCH older than her. Love the shoes. But the double dose of shiny in shoes and dress is a tad bit too much.

  • another_laura

Out. Bad dress. And she knows it.

  • Synnamin

Love her, but OUT. Too, too much and too sloppily put-together

  • quiltrx

The dress is SO an “almost” for me…but I’m going to have to say out. The dress definitely has the vibe for the event, except for the excessive boobage (and accompanying titscrepancy). The shoes though, ugh. And her makeup makes her look unwell. I think this called for a different ‘do, too.

  • Nicole S.

IN – simply because the shape of that shoe is brilliant with the shape of the neckline. It’s crazy but it works.

  • OUT! The print is kinda fabulous on her, but those proportions are doing no favors to her shape. Epic fail.

  • flamingoNW

OUT. Too boobtacular. I like the shoes tho

  • I think the peplum thingy ruins the dress, so yeah that’s out.

  • crash1212

OUT! Sadly. The proportions are all off here. If I only had one quick look and then she was gone, it might be a different story. It IS high impact, but….no.

  • Peplum AND puffy sleeves AND that plunging neckline AND bold stripes. Oy, pick one or two design element! OUT.

  • TSkot

  • Beardslee

OUT. It gives her an odd shape and I could have gone to my grave without knowing precisely how her breasts lie against her ribcage.

  • OUT! It looks like her boobs may fall out at any moment and the peplum will have to do double duty & play boob catcher as well as crumb catcher.

  • jmorino08

In the sideview where you can’t see her boobs, it’s adorable. But with the boobs it looks like she’s wearing it backwards.

  • Melizmatic

Thought striking, the pattern makes her boobs look noticeably disproportionate to each other.

  • OUT! The bodice is puling because, well, she actually has breasts and the waist is much too high for something with a peplum. This needed to be custom tailored to her body for it to have worked.

I love the shoes, but not with this dress. There’s too much going on in the dress to have anything going on in the shoes (though the color is fab).

  • snarkykitten

I can’t beat that Beetlejuice comment.

  • hmatz

Out. I love her, but this makes her look rather top heavy and awkward. Her boobs are drooping into her peplum… that’s not a good look.

  • AngelaGreen

Nope, sorry, out. Though it did remind me of Jeffrey Sebelia’s collection, and I bet she’d work the shit out of that zipper dress that won him season 3.

  • VicD

It looks too high waisted for her. Oh, and BOOBS. This is an out based on the high standard she has been setting.

  • Too many stripes in too many directions on too many levels. OUT.

  • RebeccaKW

Out. The side view isn’t bad, but the huge cleavage is working against the stripes. Also, I hate the frou-frou around the waist. The shoes are focus pulling. Girl needs a nap.

  • sunndoesntknow

Maybe it would be better if the hook&eye at the neckline was closed? Probably not, but I’m grasping at straws because I kind of love her.

  • Nah, i’m not liking it. plus the plunging neckline doesn’t even make sense for a dress of that shape.

  • MoHub

    This ain’t right!

  • conniemd

Out. It would be in but the right boob is drooping so much, while the left boob is still perky. Cannot handle droopy and boobs not in sync with each other. The Bitter Kittens have a term for boobs going in different directions that I can’t recall.

  • Sara__B

No. OUT. Even the fabulous Solange can’t make that silly dress work.

  • alyce1213

OUT. Circus, side boob, and the hair is awkwardly too high.

  • stagmania

    OUT. Hate those shoes.

  • Targettaste

Can’t get past the tits discrepancy, and that high waist with peplum make her boobs look like they are sagging.

  • OUT. Someone stuck her waist two inches higher than it actually is. Not good, especially with a peplum.

  • j_anson

    No. Awful. Out.

  • Not applicable

The Grand Canyon’s got nothin’ on the great divide between those boulders…OUT!!!

  • tereliz

OUT! Sorry, Solange, I love you, but that is not your dress. I was just about to say it could not be any worse when I saw that the top of the collar has an eye-hook. I stand corrected.

  • Out. The face is as gorgeous as ever but shoulders down just don’t work. And it isn’t even in her usual “I’m taking a risk and it’s a million to one but it just might work” way. This is more “I have dress, I have shoes, I’m out the door”.

  • OUT!!! – put them away! It ruins the potential for an amazing dress! That fabric could be major!

  • Imasewsure

OUT – everything is wrong and she knows it!

  • Jangle57

I got to her waist and was like, what the hell is going on there? It looked all askew with the competing lines. And the shoes – ugh, not with that dress! No, just no. OUT

  • Louise Bryan

I would say that this look contains many missteps, and the whole is even less than the sum of the parts. OUT

  • I’m liking the color story and the texture, but the cleavage is definitely uncalled for. OUT

  • out.

  • E. D.

OUT. Puffy sleeves and navel-cleavage don’t belong on the same dress. This would be so much better sleeveless.

  • hard to give her OUT. But i love the shoes.

  • formerlyAnon

Out. It smacks of a really poorly thought-out [and incomplete] super hero costume.

  • Those shoes literally just elicited an, “Oh, no,” from my lips. No.

  • Snailstsichr

    I wish I didn’t have to – but this doesn’t work. OUT.

  • Colin

IN. It could do without the peplum, but that’s not enough to give Solange the shame of being voted out by a online fashion blog. She’s working this look just fine.

  • embers618

OUT. The fit of this dress makes it look like she had a growth spurt and didn’t have time to get a new dress in time: pulling in the waist, high waisted, awkward in the shoulders. If all the proportions were increased by about 10%, it would make a world of difference. Oh, and different shoes, and different make-up, and less cleavage. But mostly my issue is with the fit.

  • erinbinek

Yikes. Cannot find one good thing to say about any of it.

  • Haley Buchanan

Weird boobs pretty much always equals an OUT.

  • IN. Despite boobs, not because of them (even though they’re nice boobs.) The shape and pattern is fun, and I like pairing a bold pattern with a pop of solid color. But I’d go with showier earrings.

  • Trisha26

OUT – The name of the shoes says it all “CRAY-ford.”

  • Anniebet

Out. Too much gapping and pulling and bunching at the waist. The dress makes her torso look short, and her dumpy, which I know she isn’t. Love the shoes.

  • Aly Light

Love it. IN. Seriously, I have zero complaints about this outfit– I can’t a flaw in it.

  • IN, but just barely. lose the peplum and cover your boobage, and we’re ok.

  • Beverly Kozma

In, but I think that hair is getting too darn high off her head. It’s a great do, but it’s making her face look extra long. Oh, and she should have worn an undershirt, lol.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Saw this earlier today on another site. Like I thought then, no! OUT

  • TheAmericaness

It’s the length of the dress with the type of heels. It gives her this little girl got caught wearing mommy’s shoes look.

  • OUT. The shape and the proportions of the dress are all wrong. And the shoes are all wrong. Plus, her makeup is really bland. Sorry, Solange – even PhD-level fashionistas get it wrong sometimes.

  • OUT for the obvious reasons including wrong shoes.

  • l_c_ann

Out for way too many reasons

  • butterflysunita

OUT. Nothing working but the hair.

  • Why Solange, why???

  • LaSylphide

Miss Solange is usually an automatic In from me, but this one just fails on too many levels. Love the hair and shoes (though not with this), but the dress – OUT.

  • Out. I do love those shoes though.

  • trisker

    OUT. definitely.

  • Judy_S

Out. I didn’t know she could look this bad. Or, in fact, bad at all. But she did it.

  • unbornfawn

OUT. Too many stripes in too many directions. Her boobs look confused.

  • Kirsten Kirsten

That’s a lotta boob, a lotta hair, a lotta skirt, and a lotta stripes. – and I love it! I think a skinny belt would have helped, and brighter lip, but overall I’m giving this one an IN.

  • It’s the peplum that’s messing it up. OUT.

  • New rule. You can wear a peplum or a plunging neckline, but not both.

  • Too much boobs, hate the makeup, don’t really like the look. Still, she’s working it, but it’s still an OUT,

  • demidaemon

Just look at the look on her face: “Holy shit! I fucked up.” That and the boobaliciousness–which is not really her style–equals OUT

  • Iroqhard

One of the many lessons Uncles T and Lo have taught me is that you can have your BOOBS out, or your LEGS out. But not both. This would’ve been cuter with…like shorts? but not like, short shorts?

    • how about one boob and one leg. does that work?

      • Iroqhard

  • Brad Watson

Without using the word “sister”, someone tell me who this woman is.

    • she used to be in destiny’s child? maybe?

    • lumivalentine

beyonce’s younger sister (or seekrit daughter, as some conspiracy theorists would have it)

  • This dress needs a tall stick figure, at least with the busy pattern. The neckline looks sloppy as if it needs ironing or something. Sometimes boobs are okay to show. They look weird with this dress because the dress is weird. Too much going on in a crunched up space.

  • i say IN, mostly because i’m crazzy about those shoes, and black and white stripes set them off just so. i like the dress, but it is a bit short waisted and snug on her. why does it look like her boobs are two different sizes? and why are they in different places on her chest? that’s some titscrepancy there. i almost never like that nude lip. looks like she picked up the concealer instead of the lipgloss. all in all, though, gotta give it an in. i rest my case.

  • Samantha Irene

Too much boob (esp since the fabric basically screams at you to look at her boobs) – not enough make up – seriously – girl could use some color!!! OUT

  • nope. OUT.

  • Contralto

It pains me to say it, but OUT. The dreadful dress outweighs everything else, and she needs some lipstick.

  • Diego!

    OUT. I HATE those shoes!

  • CatherineRhodes

  • Out. Nothing goes with anything. Hair’s great, but not with that dress. Shoes would be fine with something else. Too much cleavage. Blech.

  • Kristy Evans

IN. But I hate hate hate those shoes.

  • IN! Solange realness!

  • lalahartma

    Too much boobs. Out.

  • Out. It looks like they forgot to finish the front.
