IN or OUT: Rooney Mara in Giambattista Valli

Posted on May 16, 2013

We’ve always been big fans of the Audreybot, but there comes a point where you can predict what you’re going to see before you see it. It’s almost always a black, white or black-and-white outfit, accompanied by a vacant, wide-eyed stare, finished off with a wide-legged stance and clenched fists, as if she’s going to leap into action at any moment and rip out the throat of a photographer.

Rooney Mara attends ‘The Great Gatsby’ Party during the 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival in Giambattista Valli.

What did we tell you? We like the girl’s style – and we like this look a lot – but it’s all getting just a bit stale, no? Isn’t the affectation that she finds posing on red carpets so terribly upsetting belied by the fact that she puts a ton of work into making sure she shows up looking impeccable and interesting? Honey, it’s okay. You’re into it. No one’s gonna judge you for that. Go ahead and pose to your heart’s delight. Show off your hard work and good taste.

Anyway, what do we all think?

Vote Now!

IN! She’s still interesting and striking! Audreybot FOREVER!

OUT! Her boredom bores me.

Lea Michele’s Real Housewives of Glee look got an IN vote from the minions. Hmph.

    Well, her skin looks amazing.

    …and that’s all I got.

    • drdarke

Once again – I don’t feel enough bile for an OUT or enough love for an IN.

I’m giving this a solid “Eh”.

      • Allison Drury

Eh is exactly what I”m getting from her. I don’t understand her opposition to even a smidgen of joy in either her wardrobe or her body language. What is there to be so eh about? God help us if she and Jessie Eisenberg ever make a film together. Most awkward red carpet ever.

        • CakesOnAPlane

um, didnt they already make a film together?

          • Allison Drury

Haha. I blame my stomach flu and pregnancy for the most idiotic comment ever. I don’t think any fuel has made it to my brain in several days.

  • gabbilevy

Wish she’d do something with that hair, but the top is sharp and I appreciate the excellent deployment of the ladypants.

  • IN. Only because this is quite lovely. I’d prefer “standard” to most of the crap we’ve seen as of late on the red carpet.

    • StrandedFashionista

Precisely. One should count one’s blessings where red carpets are concerned.

  • VeryClaire

She looks great but a little heavy for spring, no?

  • IN! It may be black and white but it seems different and less goth than some of her other looks, though i’d have preferred a red or dark lipstick and earrings.

  • Daisy Walker

Wish the hair was softer, but still IN.

    • oekmama

      sheEVER do soft hair?

      • Daisy Walker

Ha–good point. Once, maybe twice. Ever.

  • Zeeshan Ali

    Robo-Audrey FOREVER…IN

  • LearnedFoot

    Well, her skin looks amazing.

    …and that’s all I’ve got.

    • LearnedFoot

      Ugh… Double post. Sorry.

  • In. I’d love to know what she does to keep her skin so beautiful. It’s definitely an “of course” outfit for miss Rooney.. but an of course in a good way.

  • Love the shoes, but you are supposed to take the cape off after the hairdresser has finished. OUT.

    • charlotte

This. I couldn’t decide between hairdressing cape and fashion-forward bib.

  • In_Stitches

She’s pulling off jodhpurs and a wilma-shrug. Total IN.

    • JuliaInBlack

Right? And making them appear chic. Another total IN.

  • charlotte

And her hair is always parted in the middle. The outfit could have worked, but I cannot sign off on ill-fitting pants. OUT.

  • Squarah

I don’t get the vibe at all that she hates posing on the red carpet. She never had a Kristen Stewart-style glower on her face. I don’t see any tension in her jaw or eyes. She doesn’t have Britney’s deer in headlights eyes or weirdly straight hands glued to her thighs. She looks calm and relaxed, but just not beaming. I fucking love it. This seems so much more normal and confident and cool then the mugging and posing that most stars do. Kinda reminds me of Swinton in that regard even though she’s not at her skill level with wearing clothes.

Also either her skin is ridiculously flawless or her makeup artist is amazing.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

No, her skin really is that flawless. She no doubt has a great makeup artist, though.

    • This is an awesome observation. She does look very relaxed, just not pandering.

      Plus that shirt is AMAZE.

    • ali meowmeow

She definitely seems comfortable, and I think the Swinton comparison is a good one.

I’ll definitely take a robot programmed to look monochromatically fabulous over many things on the red carpet. IN.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Agree completely – she could mix it up, but this is a total IN for me. She’s making the weird shapes work.

  • shirab

Please smile, just once, just a teensy bit. You don’t even have to show your teeth, even though I’m sure they are lovely.

  • flamingoNW

IN. In spite of the boredom. Audreybot appropriate for a Tiffany’s event?

  • atelier482 .

IN! However she looks like she’s going to take a shower or something. The white part resembles a bath towel.

  • j_anson

I have little opinion on Rooney Mara, but when I’m nervous about something or don’t feel comfortable, I often put lots of work into prepping so I’ll stress about it less.

Oh, anyway, IN. It may be repetitive but it does look good.

  • nannypoo

I like it. She looks beautiful.

  • In. I like it. Clean. And her make up looks flawless.

  • hughman

If you have to channel someone on the RC, you could do a lot worse than Indira Gandhi.

    • decormaven

      This. Exactly.

  • maggiemaybe

Her joylessness grates on my nerves but she does look fabulous.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

IN. It’s shoulder sling couture. As for the way she stands/acts on the red carpet, it’s refreshingly real for me. She was my sister’s BFF in high school (perhaps why I’m biased towards her) and she really is that shy.

  • Scimommy

Hm. That thing over her shoulder looks like an imaginatively draped burp cloth. I don’t know if that’s an in or an out, I’m just sayin’…

  • I’m going to hive this an OUT. As soon as you get past that beautiful off white heavy crepe neckline, it becomes unflattering and ill proportioned.

  • Sobaika

In, because she simply doesn’t look bad.

But I do agree that her style gets tired, and I find it – strange? off-putting? – that prior to the Dragon Tattoo this wasn’t her personal look at ALL. Granted, she didn’t have stylists/designers clamoring to work with her, but even still.

    • charlotte

I still believe that she has been exchanged with a twin. It must be a Game of Thrones thing…Girl with the DRAGON Tattoo.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

Yeah, it is weird. But then maybe she never felt comfortable taking risks until someone dressed her as Lisbeth Salander and she felt better that way? On the DVD commentary, David Fincher says how she had always been wearing print dresses and the like before the shoot, and when she had to dress up in super-feminine stuff for the “Irene Nesser” portion of the shoot, she felt like she was crawling out of her skin after being in Lisbeth-type clothes for so long. So I’m going with the theory that it was just a very dramatic style evolution spurred on by a role. (Plus, her pre-TGWTDT clothes were very young and girlish, and maybe she wanted to look more grown up?)

      • Sobaika

That’s very possible. And it is a very hard look to break out of. It just always struck me as more of an affectation that genuine style.

    • hac51

That’s my problem with her whole style. Normally I would love her look to death, but it never feels organic.

  • MartyBellerMask

    She is still impeccable. IN.

But what is she looking at?

  • Mary Alice Davis

    In, I think it’s lovely.

  • alyce1213

    IN for this outfit only.

I know this is not a popular opinion here, but her affectation has always bugged me.

  • In, the softer make up looks great on her!

  • Patricia Gillett

IN, this is one of the few looks of hers that I have liked. Maybe I was won over by the impeccable make up. We have seen so much bad make up on the RC lately, it’s nice to see someone who knows that a good artist is worth the investment.

  • Not feeling this one. OUT. Tired.

  • I love the way her eyes match the backdrop. Also: in.

  • IN! a face like that…

  • I’m usually in favor of pretty over interesting, but this is both! The folds on the top are striking and in good taste. I wish I could see the pants better, all I can tell is that they’re pants.

  • filmcricket

I actually don’t care for her origami look most of the time, but I am so close to adoring this it makes me weep. That top is divine. I just wish she’d taken a page from the actual Audrey and worn some sleek cigarette pants instead of those balloony monstrosities. Still giving it an in, though.

  • Tatiana Luján

    In, she looks great.

  • IN. And, hey, who’d like to see a bitch-face pose-off between her and January Jones?!

    • jetpackdino

Or a staring contest between her and Christopher Walken.

  • thecitysleeps

In. It is interesting enough to not be completely expected.

  • Lilithcat

Love that top! And while I’m not normally a fan of cropped pants, these really work.

  • Out. Gorgeous face, for what it’s worth.

  • Beardslee

    Out. Glum and predictable.

  • Pennymac

Wow. Tell me that’s not a Madame Tussauds wax figure? Are you sure? Look again.

  • Definitely IN

  • AndresB

OUT. Here, the Robot part in the Audreybot outweighs the Audrey.
And slowly but surely, I’d like to see the R. Mara who must be hidden somewhere behind those vacant eyes.

  • kmk05

IN. Her face is perfection, and what she’s wearing fits her and fits her well. But yes, this is now an ‘of course’.

  • Rand Ortega

Looks like someone forgot to remove the towel after hair & makeup. But decided it needed a sleeve. She’s beautiful, but the top looks w/out purpose or interest. I can’t sign off on it. OUT.

  • Lori

OUT. It’s boring because it’s so totally exactly what you’d expect from her and it’s also odd in a not good way. Those pants have a huge knitted bit on the bottom like some sort of abortive leg warmers and the drape of the top looks like a pashmina gone bad.

  • carnush

I don’t love it, but her face is flawless. IN.

  • I think she may be the one person who can do this look and not leave me rolling on the floor.

  • rkdgal

I just want to know why those pants end in leg warmers. What is that??

  • iheartbuffy

    really hate the stripper shoes

  • SF_Gal

    I prefer her sister

  • For me in the category of Sophia Coppola: no wrong can do.

  • I wish she had done something more dramatic with the makeup, but otherwise I have no more complaints, so I guess it’s an IN

  • It’s really boring but it does the job.
Come on, girl!! It’s Cannes!! Do something with your hair, surprise us with your makeup, anything!
I won’t vote, it’s nice so it’s not an OUT but it doesn’t convince me to say IN.
    It’s an “Of Course”.

  • Tee

In, but by the skin of her teeth. She looks good, but I’m bored with the lack of color. I had to give it to her though for making the effort of looking put-together. It’s kind of like Sofia Vergara and her mermaid dresses. That’s all she wears, but she looks good in them (and they come in many colors).

  • Anniebet

Out, so far Out – a jumpsuit made out of a blanket and a knit sweater just doesn’t read Cannes, does it?

Sure she’s impeccable, but that outfit is insulting.

  • Coolekat

  • aeb1986

definitely IN. its not the most fun thing ive seen but its polished and appropriate. i really like this

  • In! It’s expected, but I love it. I need that shirt in my life. Don’t like the shoes, though.

  • another_laura

    I’m going with IN.

  • ErmengardeGreen

    In, but she’s annoying.

  • Nikko Viquiera

  • butterflysunita

Of course it’s an IN, because she looks great–but I do admit to being a bit bored. Especially after looking at the Solange photos.

  • SugarSnap108

IN. Not wild about the pants, but I ADORE that shirt, and her face is flawless. Ridiculously flawless.

  • Out, she’s boring me and I can’t with the severe hair anymore.

    That face though. Flawless.

  • RebeccaKW

In. She still looks great. I love this on her and I love the minimal makeup.

  • Her look is repetitive but striking — IN.

  • ringthing

I agree with everything you say but I gotta say IN because she looks so good.

  • Tamara Hogan

    Great from the waist up.

  • nomoreprinces

She will never not look like Tom Hiddleson’s twin sister or Hiddleson in drag to me which is still amazing.

  • BrooklynBomber

  • bailey debruynkops

this outfit is more fit for a fancy lunch, not a movie event. O UT

  • Tracy_Flick

IN! She looks so put-together, and the hair and makeup are flawless.

  • JauntyJohn

OUT. She had me till the close-up revealed the texture of the drape. It looks like she leapt out of the salon chair and ran down to the event with their terry cloth towel still around her neck.

  • I would cut a bitch for a face like that. IN.

  • OUT, but not for the reasons you state. Out because she’s wearing hammer pants.

  • StrandedFashionista

IN, because, while standard, it’s a right sight better than most of the things ladystars are wearing this day and age.

  • sagecreek

I can’t really vote OUT because it’s done flawlessly. But it’s tiresome.

    Can I vote Tiresome?

  • CeeQ

I prefer that she own it – but I’m disliking this look on it’s own (de)merits. OUT!

  • Airkisses

Yes, it’s completely expected. Yes, she’s in a style rut. But there’s no denying… she looks great. IN.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

OUT .. she makes me tired. And I hated her in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

  • kat89

She looks like Loki from the Thor movies

  • in

  • MilaXX

I was set to give this a small IN cause I like the look, but I’m tired of getting the same thing from her all the time. However I CANNOT condone built in leg warmers under any circumstances. OUT!

  • That’s such a whimsical looking shrug that I wish she’d added some whimsy to her detailing too. I’m bored with this. I know stark is her thing but she looks like Monica Geller’s even more OCD/neurotic kid sister (Yes, I made a decade-out-of-date reference; whatcha gonna do? I blame watching too many reruns on Nick at Nite. I wish they’d bring back Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and I Love Lucy. But I digress). OUT.

  • conniemd

In. While arguably underdressed, she looks impeccably groomed and made up and I like the top of the jumpsuit.

  • Sally Brownson

  • IN for Saint Audreybot.

  • amian3

Out. Duller than dishwater. If she and Natalie Portman are ever in the same room I fear the resulting vacuum would suck everything in the world in.

  • E. D.

  • TheAmericaness

I’m sure she sits around later with a very thin cigarette and discusses with her intellectual/elite group what it’s like to existentially stand amongst those who quite literally “snap” at your soul with photos and isn’t it all TERRIBLY boring?

  • crash1212

IN. Totally in. I’m NOT bored.

  • carolynmo

    Out. Yawn.

  • The fit is good. The look is standard, but interesting. The draping of the white shrug is lovely, and the makeup is perfection. The pants look fine, perhaps a bit “hippy.” But overall, IN.

  • Out. If I had that face, I’d make it my main focus too – but it’s time to update the hair.

  • mommyca

    IN! Audreybot forever!!!

  • Julie

In from the waist up. It became an out when I realized she was wearing a jumpsuit.

  • sleepycat

I love this look. She is so hauntingly beautiful. lol IN!

  • luluransom

In-ish. That’s a positively exuberant amount of jewelry for her.

  • Jangle57

I thought the top was interesting but then I saw the bottom half and those pants are seriously ugly. OUT

  • bellafigura1

Very in. I love whatever that is she’s wearing, and I’m not yet sick of her poseurosity.

  • jw_ny

I agree tho…tired of the shy and insecure act. I don’t want to see her doing over the top pee posing with hand on hip and big smiles tho either. A very dignified head up stance with relaxed, yet well positioned, hands, will do…

  • bd73

love the look! another one who needs to create a sasha fierce alternate for public appearances.

  • jmorino08

Hair is good. Shoes are good. Everything else is blah. What’s with this whole “no makeup” makeup on the red carpet? Ya’ll aren’t fooling anyone!

  • Qitkat

I love this look, inexplicably. I think it’s the gathers in the cream side of the top. Wait, what is that anyway, a shawl/bolero/drapeyblouse/shrug–thingy?? I can’t tell if it is sewn to the black or not. It’s cute though. Although she looks flawlessly made up, she is so tentative and sad and faraway looking.

  • MandyM

IN! She is pretty even if this is expected. You can’t knock her for not branching out when she looks this great!

  • elemspbee

    IN. Audreybot fox! 4ever!

  • Joyce VG

    IN! I really like this

  • SewingSiren

In. the bottom half is a bit half hearted but the top more than makes up for it.

  • IN

  • Nonmercisansfacon

    Of course but IN.

  • Louise Bryan

In. It’s not the best she’s done, but she does her thing well.

  • I don’t get ‘bored’, I get slightly cyborgish. I think it works for her. IN.

  • Glammie

In. Yes, she’s got her look, but at least it’s different from everyone else’s and she (or rather her stylist) makes interesting choices within the limits.

    • mmc2315

Not sure, but I think I prefer someone who has their signature look—even when it veers towards the boring and predictable—over someone who bounces all over the style landscape and you have NO idea “who that girl is”.

  • Weazley

In…but is that.. are they legwarmers?

  • ankali

IN. Makeup is astonishingly gorgeous, she can somehow make that hair work, and I love the draping around her neck.

And I don’t think it necessarily follows that just because you put a lot of effort into looking good on the red carpet you actively enjoy it. I don’t think I’d like it much at all, but I wouldn’t want a bunch of unflattering photos hitting the web after every premiere either, so I’d put in the effort.

  • LaSylphide

In, just because I love the outfit so much. Not sure it really suits her, though.

  • ashtangajunkie

I’m ignoring the hair when I say that I unequivocally love this look. It’s sharp as hell.

  • Imasewsure

I love this stark look. Not sick of it. IN

  • You guys are so funny. Love. Maybe you could do “Rooney Caps” like you did Nina Caps to tell us all what she’s REALLY thinking when she clenches.

  • frannyprof

Out. Looks like she sewed legwarmers on to the bottom of those pants.

  • Mlzx

IN, if for no other reason than the impeccable combination of the back drop and her eyes. Sometimes fate hands you the IN, and you take that IN from fate. You do not ask fate questions when fate plops you, a delicate, blue-eyed dame, in front of a Tiffany’s blue wall and then takes your picture.

  • sweetestsith

Its rather standard for her, but she looks fabulous. IN!

Maybe explore color this summer though, nobody will judge you Ms. Mara!

  • quiltrx

IN, just because I like black/white too, and she is preternaturally beautiful.

  • Sarah Thomas

In the immortal words of Michael cera, I think that’s just her face.

  • PeaceBang

    IN. Predictable yet delectable.

  • demidaemon

If you are ever a textured onesie on the red carpet, you should reevaluate your life choices. OUT.

  • formerlyAnon

Oh, OUT, based mostly on personal prejudice. Because while I find this ensemble, both in theory and on her, unflattering, neither pretty nor elegant, and bordering on ugly. But ya know, she’s making it work. So a case could be made, by another, for an in.

  • judybrowni

    Bunchy, black diaper, harem pants.

    Nuff said.

  • abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxqyz

personnaly i dont like her vibe, she always looks so stuck up… even Cathy Horyn mentioned that in her article before, OUT.

  • oekmama

IN. She looks chic and comfortable. She needs to sit down with Audrey Tatou and trade tips. She can teach Audrey how to keep that youthful fresh-faced look and how to dress your age. And Audrey can teach her how to lighten up. They’re both in town. They can go out for a twelve Euro Latte.

  • Claudia Fernandes

    In, absolutely

  • lilazander

She’s all IN for me. She has grace that makes the clothes look good on her.

  • Diego!

Barely IN, I explain why, she looks gorgeous but she is not giving attitude, therefore I take some points out. I love love love the outfit but I hate the lenght of the pants. I hate her hair too, but overall is an IN. Barely, as I said before.

  • A lesson in makeup:

She is utterly beautiful and flawless. Her makeup is much more flattering than sixties thick liner with wings on the side. This is a softer look. With thick liner on top, the lashes get hidden.

She shape of the off-white from her right side is all bunched up.

  • PeggyOC

In. I really kind of like this. The drape has a softness that’s balancing out the stark.

  • AmeliaEve

OUT. Pharmacist’s night on the town.

  • In. C’est chic

  • Candigirl1968

IN, but would have loved a great bracelet or ring to give a pop of happiness to this somber look.

  • notterriblybitter

Do those pants have belt loops but no belt? And they’re baggy around the hips and have knit cuffs so they’re snug around the calves? I’m not sure the world needs formal Jodhpurs.

  • mmc2315

  • Kristobel

She does have a bad case of the dead eyes. I like the outfit, though.

  • tereliz

I wouldn’t be so bored if she looked a little more confident. Lately it seems like she’s just phoning it in when she could be killing it, and that’s just body language, not styling. The fists, the stance—you’re so right, uncles.

I’ll give her a tepid in, but only because it’s an interesting look that only she could pull off.

  • Jecca2244

I wonder if her and Kate are close.

  • OUT, partly because of the predictability of it all, and partly because I am tired of center parts and slicked back hair that makes women look like they’re channeling Miss Gulch.

  • IN. I really like this! It’s a weird outfit, but it works for her. And I like how her makeup is a little softer than usual. THIS is how to do “nude” makeup. Yes, it’s predictable, but that shouldn’t be the only reason to rule her “out.”

  • It’s an IN for me but someone shake some life into this woman! My god, she always has that look.

  • lalahartma

No. If the pants fit like on the model, they prolly yes.

  • CatherineRhodes

    IN. She’s rocking her brand.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Out. It’s a very dull look, which is unusual for her.

  • DamH

    make up is DIVINE

  • in! It’s gorgeous and her eyes are tiffany blue

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL
