IN or OUT: Rita Ora in Roksanda Ilincic

Posted on May 03, 2013

We really liked this look at first glance, but now we’re not so sure.

Rita Ora launches British Designers’ Collective at Bicester Village in London in a Roksanda Ilincic dress paired with Nicholas Kirkwood sandals.

Roksanda Ilincic Pre-Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Tali Lennox

Nicholas Kirkwood Multicolor Leather Flower & Elaphe Sandal

We think we like the idea of that dress more than the dress itself. Certainly, we like the white version better, which we were iffy on when Marisa Tomei wore it, but Marisa’s PHd-level in her dress-wearing and Rita’s on her way to a summa cum laude Bachelor’s degree at the moment. Plus we really don’t think that color works all that well for her.

And we love those shoes, but we don’t think they make a very good choice to go with that dress.

We don’t know, you guys. It’s striking, right? A little different? Help us out here. It’s the end of the week.

Vote Now!

IN! I like it and I am now going to tell you why!

OUT! I hate it because reasons!

The non-Bitter Kittens wound up loving Florence Welch’s Milli Vanilli look, voting it IN.

  • OUT. Those sleeves make me mad.

    • Colin

      Yeah those are tragic

  • kaycem

marissa wore it better for sure, but i don’t think rita’s doing too badly here. it’s the red lip and the red carpet that throw the dress itself off… the shoes cannot be explained away or justified though. i don’t know, i have a hard time giving rita ora an OUT, but we do have to score on a scale after all. for some other, lesser starlet, these mistakes wouldn’t necessarily add up to an out. but i feel like i have to employ some bitter kitten tough love in order to keep ms. ora reaching for her true fashion bitch potential.

  • MilaXX

OUT! IT looks old and not in a good way. HATE that hairstyle.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

I agree, she’s too young to look this matronly…OUT.

  • She’s too busty for that neckline. But hey, she’s opening an outlet store so how chic does it need to be?

  • ceceliadid

IN for a pretty smile and a simple look that suits her.

  • tereliz

I guess out, but not for lack of trying. On her part and on mine.

  • Amelia

Cute dress in bad colors, standard (for her) makeup, terrible hair, terrible shoes, terrible jewelry….OUT

  • alyce1213

Bachelor’s degree with honors? In my book, she’s still in grade school, and not at the top of her class.

This, however, is one of the first times I’ve looked at her without getting queasy. It’s a decent, cute little dress, the wrist ruffles are questionable. But it’s an improvement, to be sure. I like the shoes, they’re fun, but a bit too summery with this dress.

However, I cannot stand her hair and I despise thick, overdrawn black eyebrows on blondes. Nothing good ever comes of that.

  • AndresB

Judging by her searching in vain for the right attitude in every pic, she isn’t too sure either.
It’s OUT because the color is not for her, the inverted pleats are not for her, the neckline is not for her, and neither shoes nor earrings are for the dress.

  • Tatiana Luján

What I think she needs to pull off this look is a better bra.
Oh, and I hate the fryed cheap blonde. and the mom hairstyle.

  • Mauricio González del Castillo

    OUT, way too Almodovar girl.

    • sojourneryouth

      Very astute and spot on.

  • Jessi03

Nah, boo. Much better in white and her hair is making me angry.

  • IN. I like individual elements quite a bit, and they’re put together into a look that’s interesting but not crazy.

  • Sobaika

In. There’s a lot wrong here, but she’s making it happen in spite of the issues.

  • In_Stitches

I love all of these things and I love the idea of all of them together and yet, it’s just not working. The rose in the shoes echoing the floral shape of the cuffs almost sways me to an in, but, I can’t…none of it’s flattering. I’m gonna blame the hair. OUT

  • Out. It looks heavy and itchy.

  • Lori

Out. The idea is better than the execution and even the idea was better in the original colors. And those shoes really do not go.

  • With that hair, it’s very 80s-does-lady looking. Out.

  • ringthing

OUT. I can’t with that 80s anchor woman hair.

    • sojourneryouth

And does she ever NOT have roots? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a pic of her without long dark roots. I don’t like anything she’s wearing, not even her makeup. The shoes could work with another outfit on someone else.

  • I really hate her hair here, and I think that’s the problem. It turns this look into Samantha Jones from SATC drag in the worst way. It’s a pity, because the dress and shoes are fab. Also, the yellow earrings were the wrong choice because they blend right into her hair and offer no contrast whatsoever to the broad swath of red. Some sort of dark earrings – maybe with eggplant-colored stones, or any other deep jewel-tone – would have worked much better. OUT.

  • blueberrypanckae

seems out of season…to heavy for May

  • jilly_d

Even if she had better shoes and this dress fit her properly, it would still be an OUT because of that thing she’s calling a hairstyle. It’s all I can see.

  • IN.

  • Somebody please fix this girl’s hair…..

  • Imasewsure

IN but not a slam dunk. I think the shoes are great and I hate white shoes and I think the dress is cute and I hate those kinds of sleeves… I actually like the color of the dress on her – just not with that awful hair. Still an IN for me!!

  • Everything separate is great, but not together. And I also much prefer the white version of the dress. She looks good, but it’s not quite there. Out.

    • stubbornthoughts

My thoughts exactly. With the addition of my hatred toward her hair.

  • Nicole Chubb

In – I am all for with her cleaner looks than the hot messes her stylist was previously pulling together.

  • SewingSiren

I don’t hate it I guess. But she’s having sort of a rectangular hair day.

  • OUT a la what’s her names SPANISH inspired look that got her aufed on PR a few week back!

  • Aly Light

I like that color in combination with her lipstick– it’s got a little retro bombshell style going on, but there are elements about her that add kind of a punk edge. I do want to cut that bell-sleeve trim off, though… which would eliminate some of what’s conflicting with the shoes. I say IN.

  • Qitkat

I don’t really care for the dress. It feels too heavy for such a simple style, with the dark cuffs feeling almost like dark gloves that don’t belong. Her eyebrows are way too dark and heavy also. The shoes are cute, but require a more summery frock. I liked Marisa’s look much more. Out.

  • WHAT DOES SHE SING?? And “IN” for the outfit. *Because the whole is greater than the sum of its parts?

  • Barely an OUT. It looks like she’s wearing a costume. In some respect, they all are, but most make it less obvious than Miss Ora. (Which, by the way, that’s her real birth name? Wow. Someone lucked out.)

  • Call me Bee

    It’s weirdly heavy dress. OUT.

  • formerlyAnon

In. The dress is about large scale visual impact, it does that, and she looks great at a glance.

It *is* close to the line. There are a lot of negatives. The shoes are AWFUL with it, though I can’t quite figure out why. It’s like they’re drawn to a different scale, somehow. The cuffs have no reason for being, I don’t like that hair, and the earrings neither add nor detract. Nonetheless, the impact of the dress overcomes all the negatives for me.

  • imspinningaround

With that poofy ash blonde hair and the modest sheath silhouette all I see here is Lady Di drag. Which, no, Rita Ora. Try again.

  • aeb1986

In only because i LOVE those shoes. i dont even care that they don’t really go with this outfit. id wear those with sweatpants if i could

  • Out! Good dress, wrong accessories, wrong hair. She’s amazing in this month’s ELLE, but that must have been some fabulous photo-stylist.

  • VicksieDo

For me it matters not what she wears until she fixes that horrible hair. OUT

  • Pffffffffffft. This is some fried up Nancy Reagan w/clown sleeves unrealness. BOOOO.

  • amaranth16

(First reaction:) In! What are you guys talking about! She looks great. She looks… (Second reaction:) …like a grandma? Ennnh, it’s so heavy… and her hair is objectionable…

In, but only because it’s not awful.

  • Janet B

Ugh. Bad color, bad shape, bad choice of accessories and it looks too hot.

  • Her hair should officially be declared a disaster area. Maybe then she could apply for governmental assistance to make it look human again.

  • guest2visits

Loud earrings, brittle hair & make-up have made her into a cartoon. And that’s not even including the dress and shoes.

  • sekushinonyanko

It’s a very “I’m married to a politician” dress. Like I could see this on Jill Biden or Callista Gingrinch. Honestly same for the hair.

  • PastryGoddess

Why does she have Barbara Bush’s hair?

I like the outfit, but only if the hair was more couture

  • AceOn6

Out. The fit doesn’t suit her at and gives somewhat of a droopy boob feel. Funny, but I think it would look great on someone much bigger.

  • Samantha Irene

Out. I hate it – mostly for color reasons.

  • Sara__B

The dress looks great on her, and the shoes and the earrings are fun, but the hair and the red lip that clashes with the dress? No fun at all. …. ….. Just a little bit IN.

  • bellafigura1

OUT. The dress doesn’t fit right, and it’s too sophisticated for her … personality. Persona. Whatevs. And is it just me, or is there something not right with her coloring? I like the dark brows and I usually like them paired with blonde, and I like dark roots too … Maybe it’s too yellow? I dunno.

  • misstressofsylar

I’m just happy more and more celebrities are wearing Kirkwood shoes. they are certainlu works of art!

  • alaskahyoung

Out. Hate the hair, dislike the shoes.

  • demidaemon

I just don’t think it’s exuberant enough for her personality. The hair is tired looking, she is tired looking, and the darts in the midsection are extremely unflattering. She really needed to pump up the styling choices here. OUT.

  • Carrieanno

Out. The sun is shining brightly, it’s the beginning of May and she’s wearing something more appropriate for the family “dress to impress” Christmas feast. Looks warm and possibly itchy and is making me grumpy. And her hair looks fried. But I love the shoes.

    • Corsetmaker

Well it’s not exactly t-shirt weather yet! Springs been late in coming.

  • VicD

Out. Rita Ora channels Celia Cruz.

  • Rachael

Am I the only nerd on here that immediately thought about the scene from Harry Potter where Ron tried to cut the ruffles off of his dress robes? Also, she should be forced to shave her head as punishment for that hair!

  • nannypoo

It doesn’t seem to fit very well and her hair is fried.

  • Out. I don’t like anything about this look.

  • flamingoNW

Borderline for sure, but I like it. Except the earrings. Those are wrong. IN, barely

  • CatherineRhodes

  • rkdgal

As long as she remains a blonde (which so fights with her coloring, and the black brows aren’t helping), she’s an OUT for me. Try a hat?

  • OUT. I can’t get past that awful hair. She needs to go back to dark.

  • I hate her bleach job, and I’m not that crazy about the dress (and it looks all polyester and hot in that much sunlight). OUT.

  • phrenk

I hate the sleeves and the shoes don’t go, but otherwise I like the dress and how it looks on her. Also, she is looking radiant, and I am weak. IN.

  • H2olovngrl

That dress looks way too heavy for those spring time shoes. On another note, her hair looks fried and her make up is so heavy looking, like it’s gonna melt right off her face at any moment. Out.

  • Colin

Out, definitely agree with liking the idea better than the execution. Some better fit would go a long way for this look. Altogether, the hair and makeup combined with the ill fitting dress makes this look momcore straight up

  • Jangle57

From the neck down, it’s just ok. The dress is fairly simple, even with the sleeves, but I don’t like the white shoes with it. From the neck up – ugh. Touch up the roots, lose the bright red lipstick for starters. Ok, I’ve talked myself into this being an OUT

  • TheAmericaness

    out. eyes. burn. tired.

  • GTrain

i hate the hair but otherwise IN

  • Anniebet

    Out. Too much tomato.

  • ccm800

cupcake liners do not a cuff make

  • PeaceBang

Cripes. Nothing’s working here. Not the dress, not the make-up, not the shoes, not the earrings. She looks so happy, too! Above all and the only truly unforgivable element here is the hair. The hair is the WORST.

  • OUT. Too 80’s and missmatch.
    Also, that hair… urgh!!!

  • Jecca2244

I am just more stunned that the model is the daughter of the woman who sang Walking on Broken Glass.

  • unbornfawn

HATE those dark ruffled cuffs, they really bring the dress down. The dark roots of her hair aren’t doing her any favors and those shoes are wasted with that dress.

  • Corsetmaker

I like the dress. Don’t like the shoes with it. She needs a better bra. Yeah, her hairs never good, she’s fighting her own colour too much for the blonde to ever work.

  • ankali

OUT. The shoes don’t work with the dress, and the colors throughout just don’t work. Very 1980s Ivana Trump to me.

    • Including the hairstyle.

  • LaSylphide

Tough one. Love the shoes, but white is all wrong for this, and the style is too casual for a rather severe dress. Like the dress, but somehow it just doesn’t seem like her style. Other than seeing her on this site, I have no idea who she is or what she does, but her look always seems playful and this is a bit matronly, and she’s doing nothing to make it hers.

    Gotta go with an out.

  • thecitysleeps

Out, the shoes are an eye sore with the dress, and I hate the sleeves at the end personally.

  • jw_ny

  • kathrineb

Out. Dark roots and fried hair among other things…

  • trisker

OUT. Boring dress with weirdly random sleeves. Completely UN-RitaOra.

  • OUT … nothing special going on. Must have been a freebie. 🙁

  • OUT. The dress doesn’t seem to fit her quite right, and I don’t love the color on her. And I HAAAAAAATE her hair. I hate the dark roots showing, and I hate the hair style itself.

  • MandyM

The shoes are cool and the color is OK but the fit is less than flattering. OUT

  • Kirsten Kirsten

OUT. This would look fabulous on a stylish 70 year old or a republican senator’s wife, but on a young starlet: bleh. I love love love the shoe.

  • Pterodactyl111

    Out. Her hair is terrible.

    • lobsterlen

Out … it is her her color it is horrible mismatched for her skin tone. Its all I see I cant even admire the dress because of the horrible dye job which looks like cheap from the box hair color.

  • In. It’s sitting oddly but overall I likeses.

  • Um. No.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

HER HAIR! NO! This is a 1980’s NIGHTMARE! I am having PTSD! MAKE IT STOP!

  • mhlmh

I’m getting a strong Melanie Griffith from Working Girl feeling. Just another day at the office, except with annoying cuffs to boot.

  • librarygrrl64

Out. And her hair is distracting.

  • crash1212

OUT. For all reasons you stated.

  • Those sleeves make kittens cry.

  • IN. 1) huge improvement for Rita; 2) wearable. I could totally see an actual person wearing it; and 3) love the sleeves and the shoes.

  • calbear97

IN because I like the shape and the shoes are totally bitchin. I feel like the neckline is too covered, somehow bringing that down would help a lot with the matronliness. But overall I think the look has impact and looks good. The hair is tragic.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

  • lalahartma

    It is fine.

  • The hair doesn’t feel right with the dress, but still, IN.

  • That hair is dreadful.
