IN or OUT: Lea Michele in Lela Rose

Posted on May 14, 2013

We really did try to like this, you guys.

‘Glee’ star Lea Michele attends the Fox 2013 Programming Presentation in New York City in a Lela Rose dress paired with Jenni Kayne shoes, and Dana Rebecca Designs and EF Collection jewelry.

Lela Rose Spring 2013 Collection

And to be fair, it’s a pretty cute dress. There’s no reason this couldn’t work for her, although we tend to think saturated pinks aren’t her best color choice. Our main issue, as always, is with the styling. We’re just gonna say it: there’s nothing fresh or youthful about it. In fact, the big hair and heavy makeup, paired with a dress like this and – it has to be said – a pair of tacky-looking, too-large slingbacks, is kind of aging, actually. She’s working a cougar look, except she’s 26 years old. Sleeker hair, MUCH less makeup, and less disco shoes would have made this work just fine for her. She needs to have a stern talk with whoever pulled this look together.

Are we wrong here? It’s totally Real Housewives, amirite?

Vote Now!

IN! You are wrong! She looks fresh as a daisy!

OUT! Go home, seduce a pool boy, and get this out of your system, Lea.

Anne Hathaway has been out in the desert for far too long, waiting to hear what you all thought of her scary ghost hair and dress. You voted the whole thing OUT. Come home and schedule a hair appointment, Anne.

  • fringebenefit

In. Not great, but not bad enough to be out.

  • Emily Rose

IN, mostly because it’s not an of course.

  • Nicole Chubb

She reminds me of a soap opera character in the late 80’s/early 90’s. It got me kinda nostalgic.

    • Introspective

so the fabric is totally like a duvet/sheet/curtain set in blanche devereaux’s bedroom. shoes are ticky tacky. hair is a mess and face was applied with a trowel. and yet this is LM “toning it down”.

      I cant. OUT

      • TheAmericaness

First thing I thought: My mom had a sheet set like that! In the 80’s! She was certainly less sexually adventurous than Blanche. Or at least that’s what I am dear god assuming.

    • My first thought was Kelly Kapowski heading out on a date with Zack Morris back in the early 90s.
      For me, it’s an out.

  • Deedles

In. I really appreciate that she dialed it back a few decibels. I do LOATHE the shoes, though.

    • 3boysful

Me, too! Are those not the cheapest-looking pair to grace our screens in a while?? Different shoes (strappy black sandals, perhaps) and sleeker hair, and this would’ve been an IN.

  • thecitysleeps

IN. At least her vagina is covered and it’s a cute print. Plus I kinda like the hair.

  • I’m going to give her an IN, even though I’m not feeling the styling,, just because she’s not showing cleavage and thighs, and because she’s toning down the posing.

  • In, I like it

  • Diego!

OUT. That dress looks cheap on her. Her shoes are big and I’m not very fond of her hair. But she lost a lot of weight, didn’t she? She is rocking her new body. Nice. But OUT overall.

    • VioletFem

Lost a lot of weight? From where? She was always itty-bitty. That being said, I do agree that this outfit is an OUT. I really wanted to like this because in principle it should work, but the color and the styling look really dated, but her hair is nice.

      • Diego!

When Glee started she was ‘curvier’. Go check it out. Back to the topic of this post, doesn’t she look like a bad style from the ’80s? Even her hair, which is nice, I agree with you, but overall this is screaming “Working Secretary” haha 😛

        • VioletFem

I actually kind of like the hair, even though it looks it came out of an 80’s music video. It’s not defensible, but I like it anyways. : )

(It might look better with a more modern and chic outfit, though)

  • lehen

She looks like a fancy, good-girl version of MIA

  • kipper

Far from a Lea Michele hater , but nothing at all about this works… mostly shoes and that awful hair..

  • A nude eye with that gorgeous pink lipstick would have made a world of difference.

  • MilaXX

OUT! for serving ho’wife realness. HATE the hair and the makeup is too heavy. I wonder if the dress color would look better if all her hair was dark. I refuse to even acknowledge those shoes. HOW IS SHE WALKING? They are sling backs and the sling doesn’t even touch her feet!

    • Beardslee

It baffles me why, when she put those shoes on, the stylist and Lea didn’t say, “no, these are too big,” and choose something else.

    • kmk05

My guess is she’s shuffling in them, her toes tensed to high heavens to grip where the shoe points. It must look slightly ridiculous in real life.

  • Those highlights are awful.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

In. I think she looks cute – although . . . WHAT IS WITH ACTRESSES WEARING SHOES THREE SIZES TOO BIG????????

  • I think IN only because she isn’t posing so much and showing her whole torso in a deep V neck plunge for once. But why do they wear these too-big shoes??

  • charlotte

IN, even though the shoes don’t fit- do they ever?- and I don’t get her tattoos.

  • flamingoNW

  • filmcricket

Ack. I hate to give this an out because she’s all covered up and in general is pretty cute, but yeah, those shoes are just awful. Even if they fit they wouldn’t work with a pink floral dress. And her hair is driving me nuts – she’s got such gorgeous hair normally and she keeps torturing it. Argh. Out.

    • RebeccaKW

L’Oreal or whoever she’s with is going to drop her if she keeps sporting a mane like that.

      • Rachel Monroe

except L’Oreal is pushing the ombre look themselves.

        • RebeccaKW

I was meaning more the dirty, frizzy hair.

  • MilaXX

Love the bracelets, but they are mighty pricey for 14kt. the one with the 2 circles is $1760
off to google a cheaper alternative

  • Sobaika

Out – cute dress but it is HORRIBLE with her tan, and as you said, the styling.

  • Although my first thought was, wow, that is a positively understated look for Lea Michele (no tits, ass, and/or groin), I agree that the hair & shoes take it straight to OUT-ville. The makeup doesn’t bother me so much because I think of that as her baseline look. Hope she learns a little from looking at these photos ans thinking, gee, I don’t have to expose everything I own to rock a dress!

  • Imasewsure

The dress gets an IN but the hair, makeup and shoes are awful. At least her nails look good – she could have gone overboard with those too and she didn’t so she is earning a tepid IN from me this time

  • Out. For some reason, this makes me think of her as the George Hamilton of young celebrities. The dress color makes her skin color look like a bad tan to me. Plus, totally agree that this is too much makeup and too much hair.

  • In. It’s not her usual ‘of course’ attempt, in that it’s not gynecological, sheer or sternum baring.

  • AlisonS

OUT! She looks like a Barbie! Not today’s Barbie, the ones I played with in 1989.

Those shoes are horrible and cheap looking.

  • In_Stitches

Honey no, Snooki would tell you that your hair looks cheap. Then she’d try and snag those shoes straight off your feet, but you should just let her take em because they aren’t doing you any favors. Keep the dress though, it’s working for you. OUT

  • It’s a leap forward for her, so I’m going with an IN, regardless of the problems.

  • It’s not bad enough to be out, but it’s only a default IN. And I don’t like her tattoos. I love good tattoos and hers (the ones on her feet anyway) are not good.

    • tonibaloney

I was thinking the same thing! They look like prison tats! Awful.

  • formerlyAnon

In. It looks more like a costume for a show set in the 1980s than I’d like, but the ’80s are due for a moment, yes? And debatable if it makes it any better, but the styling reads more Topanga than Real Housewives, to me.

  • Jangle57

I couldn’t figure out what you hated about this outfit so much until I got to the closeup of the shoes – ye gods! And why wear your hair slung over one shoulder of a one shoulder dress? Kind of defeats the point of the one shoulder dress. The dress is cute but it could have been so much more. OUT

  • Jessi03

    MESS. Out.

  • Back in the 80s, I had a barbie with the same outfit and big hair. (that’s an OUT, I’m thinking)

  • RebeccaKW

Out. I’m getting a strong 90’s vibe, with the shoes and the hair. The dress is super cute, but she needed a ponytail and some sandals.

  • She looks like she got caught in the middle of a cat fight on Dynasty and someone ripped off one shoulder of her dress and she found shoes, and even though they weren’t hers and didn’t fit, she was in such a rush to get away from Alexis and whatsherface, she grabbed them and ran.

So that would be an OUT.

  • Buffy

I’ll give it an in because she’s not flashing anything

  • I was going to say it’s secretarial. but I don’t feel like I’m about to see her hoo-ha and her sternum is covered so in? she’s graded on her own curve apparently.

  • Tee

Paris Hilton called. She wants her big ‘ol shoes back.

  • carnush

OUT. Trashy hair and bad makeup.

  • elleg929

OUT. I can’t with that hair.

  • GorgeousThings

    26 going on 49.
But the dress is really cute, and it’s nice to see her not doing the sexy stink-face. I’ll give it a barely-IN, but those shoes have GOT to go.

  • IN, but only because she’s hot as a two-dollar pistol almost no matter what. -Almost. I do see your point. Anne H, though – wow! – get some real hair and you can go back to Lea’s H.a.a.T.D.P. qualification.

  • I think she’s trying to do a more classy/sexy vibe which if styled correctly would totally work for her. So IN.

  • MartyBellerMask

I get where she’s going with the hair, but the execution is all wrong. JBF hair should look tousled and free, not crunchy and stiff. I suspect that even if she did have a romp in the limo ride over, her hair stayed in place the entire time. I mean, that shit ain’t moving.
Also, the shoes are ridiculous but the dress is cute. Unfortunately it’s too tight. I’m going to give her a lower-case “out”.

  • BeeBeauNYC

The cheap looking highlights and generally bad hair make it an OUT for me.

  • Cathy S

I like the dress. The shoes are awful. I don’t like her hair. I’m thinking of giving the dress and In and her an Out.

  • gabbilevy

Out. And it’s not her stylists who need a talking-to. Prowlin’ for poolboy seems to be the look she prefers.

  • prettybigkitty

It is definitely housewifey. But I’m willing to give her a pass for not going the housewife T&A route. In for me.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

  • jw_ny

The hair, makeup, and shoes sent the look way over the edge into the out category.

  • nannypoo

    Of course not.

  • Tatiana Luján

This dress called for a ponytail.

  • kmk05

IN. I actually quite like the hair because it’s kind of beach tousled, which is what I guess she was trying to go for (with her people). I despise the shoes and the makeup: she’s beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but, for once, a ‘more bare’ (a la Olivia Munn) face would have worked better. It wouldn’t have competed with the hair and dress for attention.

  • aeb1986

In. But only because I can’t seem to come up with the words “of course” and I feel like that’s gotta be some sort of improvement…

  • NiseiShonagon

Somewhere in a stockpile of unopened Barbies from the mid 80s is a doll wearing this exact outfit.

  • shorty j

Her face looks cute, and I’m kinda digging on the jewelry (and the sparkly short nails), but the rest of this is pure cougar. OUT.

  • ringthing

Out. The words that came to mind immediately were “sarong” and “lanai”, therefore setting off the Golden Girls alarm.

  • mmc2315

Oh, tough one. I don’t love it. That’s for certain. But it’s not offensive enough to vote it OUT. I say “in”.

  • Janet B

Cute dress, but she’s too young to look so old.

  • The styling is very Long Island/Staten Island. And why wear a one-shoulder dress and cover the shoulder with a bunch of hair? I could go in or out on this…no MEH option?

  • sagecreek

Dress is cute, but those shoes have to go. OUT.

  • I’ll give her an In. That’s a cute dress. The styling isn’t great, but it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever seen. And at least she’s not showing us so much skin like she usually does.

  • SugarSnap108

Owwt. The shoes and hair are inexplicable. I sort of dig the print, and don’t mind a one-shoulder in certain dresses. But a one-shoulder-plus-capsleeve is just weird.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

In. She’s trying for ‘serious actress’ here and I give her credit for that.

  • ashtangajunkie

Out. Very cute dress, but the look didn’t come together the way it should have.

  • AbbeyRogue

    Out. Allison Williams drag.

  • IN, she looks great, i love her style…

  • See, but I like the ’80s… IN.

  • Amanda

In. I love it when she smiles and doesn’t smolder (of course.) She is so pretty. She would have looked better with fresher makeup and sleeker hair, but the dress is adorable and looks good on her.

  • Weirdly the teal reflection of the background in the shoes makes them look better or at least tells you what they should be.

  • silly little thumb

IN, but barely. She always looks like she’s trying too hard.

  • Out. Stupid hair.

  • Agree…dress sharp but styling kills it! Get rid of those tats on ankles….

  • CatherineRhodes

    Crazy, but I’m going IN.

  • BrooklynBomber

I like this dress (Wilma though it may be) and I’m so glad it’s not mid-calf. Detest the hair coloring, but the dress is good. IN

  • The shoes and over-the-shoulder big ol’ hair are terrible and ruin an otherwise nice look. OUT.

  • TheLaurenJean

I like it, but it definitely has a Golden Girls vibe to it.

  • Out. Points for being fully covered, though. The styling cannot be forgiven.

  • I love the dress but not Lea Michele in it. So I guess that makes it an OUT.

  • decormaven

Trying to be kind here, but those ill-fitting shoes are a deal breaker for me. Out.

  • Call me Bee

It’s the awful shoes that make this…awful. And that the color just clashes with her skin tone. And the heavy makeup. And all the flying hair. I guess that’s just about everything, then. OUT.

  • mjude

good god on the shoes. WTF. sorry girl, i always give you the benefit but OUT.

  • Pretty cute. In.

  • Anniebet

She’s a shoulder pad away from ‘Dallas’ territory. Hiddy shoes.

  • OUT! I wouldn’t mind all the hip jutting if she had hips to jut. She just tries too hard. The hair, the clothes, the posing. So yes she *should* blow the hair out, lighten the makeup, wear more youthful styles AND also stand up straight!

  • Aly Light

I’m slightly torn, because I think she looks better than usual in a lot of ways, though I agree that that color doesn’t work on her at all. Also, I can’t stand those highlights– ugghh. OUT, but it might be more appropriate to call this a “Not your dress” moment– I really want to see this dress on someone else.

  • OUT. Hair should not match the one shoulder look.

  • I can’t get behind this pointy sleeve cap; I can’t get behind a one-sleeve dress. My question is: Why have one bare shoulder when you cover the shoulder with hair?

Like the fabric. Hate the shoes.

  • lalahartma

  • l_c_ann

Out. The hair detracts big time.

  • OUT. Agree that the whole look – largely due to the styling – looks a little cheap. And good lord, I hate those shoes. And the chunk of blonde hair on the side. WTF?

  • Patricia Gillett

Out. This whole thing is so very 80s to me. There appears to a shoulder pad hiding under the one shoulder and that hair could only have been achieved with a huge can of Aqua Net. Save this look for an 80s themed dance party, hon.

On a more general note, do starlets not know their own shoe sizes or do stylists not care? How hard is it to get shoes that fit?

  • CrazyAuntie

A reserved “in”. I kinda like the highlights in her hair but there’s just too much of it. T shoes are tacky & I can’t understand why celebs can’t get shoes that fit. Dress is pretty cute & jewelry is nice/subdued.

  • warontara

Oh….good gosh.Even if she fixed all the glaring styling problems, this still is not her dress (not her color..or her cut of drses)….This is an all caps OUT!

  • Kate4queen

    Out Nothing works.

  • Sally Brownson

OUT. Awful shoes, awful hair, dubious dress color.

  • In. I want to dye her hair a uniform shade of brown though

  • Out, out, out.

  • I like the dress but I hate the rest (including her).

  • Sara

Meeeh. I resent being made to make a choice on this. Dislike the hair, dislike her smug face, but in the absence of anything that’s definitively out, I have to reluctantly vote IN.

  • OUT. The original, sleeker styling would have worked much better.

To be fair to the lady starlets whose shoes always appear to be too big- it’s pretty common for your feet to slide forward in heels after they get sweaty (not to be gross). I think sometimes the shoes may be slightly too big but after a few hours of feet sweat they end up looking way too large.

  • In, because the dress is suuuuuper cute and she looks like she loves wearing it. I hate the shoes and the hair.

  • RedRaven617

  • ThaliaMenninger

“She’s working a cougar look, except she’s 26 years old.” THIS. Exactly. Out.

  • jennifervney

Sigh. Out because of the styling. The dress is really pretty but the hair is unforgivable.

  • I really like her gems though…

  • LibrarianLizy

OUT. There’s no reason why that dress shouldn’t be perfectly adorable, yet somehow it looks terrible and cheap. I think it’s the hair and the shoes. Both are too big. Go spend some time with that pool boy, Lea. We’ll be here when you get back.

  • alyce1213

I can’t take her, but I’ll go so far as to say this is NOT an “of course” moment and that I like the dress very much.
The shoes are completely ridiculous — they look like cheap try-on-with-the-dress shoes at a second-rate boutique.
Better hair and shoes would have prevented the cougar vibe.

  • unbornfawn

  • appliquer

Out for all your reasons and because I so hate the shoes that are too big.

  • Not applicable

well, ‘in’ only to encourage her in the right direction… or maybe just nudging that way.

but, I’m sorry starlets- really think of where you get those tatoos— these foot tats on LM are sooo trashy looking!

  • CeeQ

I have to give this an IN. It looks pretty good compared the garbage she usually trots out in.
It is probably a bit Real Housewives – minus giant boobs, giant hair and giant gold accessories. And lip gloss. Bucket loads of lip gloss.

  • Pennymac

I went to an insurance convention in 1986 in a dress made of this exact fabric.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

It’s totally “Real Housewives”, you’ve got that right! I am sad that there’s no, “Of course!” 😉

I don’t know how she’s not walking right out of those shoes with every step. They look at least two sizes too big for her.

  • This is downright demure for her. In, only because her boobs AND thighs are covered.

  • Qitkat

    Ouch, Out.

Dear Lea, We know you want to be taken seriously, my dear. I wish someone who loved you, and whose opinion you respect would give you some advice that you would listen to. You’re a beautiful young woman with an awesome voice, and a glowing smile. This lovely dress is a step in the right direction. The jewelry is dainty and understated. But your makeup is three times too heavy and six shades lighter than the rest of your skin, the quad-colored hair screams teenage girl after a bad break-up, and you should have stabbed the stylist twice with those ill-fitting ticky-tacky shoes. Lots of your fans are rooting for you. Lovsies, Qitkat

  • Out. Kinda 80’s via 2013, no?

  • j_anson

OUT. Everything about this is making her look – the problem is not that it makes her look older, it’s that it makes her look like an older person who is desperately trying to look younger, which – how is the even possible?

  • Amy909

I think she just looks “dirty,” if that makes any sense at all. The foot tattoo, which I know she can’t do anything about, and the shoes add to the trashy look, along with the hair and makeup. Otherwise I agree that the dress is actually really cute. Another lesson in how styling can make ALLL of the difference.

  • Those are some bad tattoos

  • MaryAtRealityTea

Why does she have 90210 the first cycle hair? OUT.

  • oohsparkley!

In. In spite of the the shoes.

  • another_laura

Out, for the reasons stated. Pool boy – BWAH!

  • Out. Totally RealHousewife-y.

  • In, because it’s better than what she usually wears, and because I love those bracelets.

  • Out. Ugly print. Too big shoes. Too shiny shoes. Too big hair. Too much typical overdone-ness of a pretty casual event.

  • GTrain

  • IN! The shoes are way too frikin big, but I love the look on her. In!

  • MK03

Total Real Housewife. Lea, you’re 26 and starring on an inexplicably beloved TV show. You should not look this desperate.

  • ampg

IN – she’s going full-on ’80s retro, and I think it totally works. And if you look back, a lot of those looks read as overly mature today, partly because a certain subset of women never updated their style, so you saw it on women in their forties way past its expiration date. But here I think it works precisely because she’s so young.

  • Out. That is not a cute dress and the mermaid hair is killing it.

  • No can do. OUT. For all the reasons the wise uncles already stated.

  • StrandedFashionista

I love the dress, but it’s wasted on her. The outfit is inoffensive enough to be an IN though.

  • Turtle_Island

    I think she looks fun.

  • ali meowmeow

She’s making this all look cheap and tacky, like bad thrift store finds. Unquestionable OUT.
I get wanting to praise her for finally doing more than the standard OF COURSE, but this is not the way.

  • trisker

Out. Agreed –26-year olds don’t need that kind of makeup! Hair and shoes are tacky.

  • I’m going to give it an IN because we can’t almost see her vagina or nipples.

  • IN! Love the dress. I don’t know what you mean about that not being her color — I think she looks tan and pretty. Also, I’ll never fault someone for having big hair. But the accessories are pretty snooze and the shoes are awful.

  • Louise Bryan

Out, for looking too old. Overall my reaction is -meh-, because I’ve certainly seen her look worse, and it is a cute dress, but … yeah, OUT.

  • TSkot

Sad, because this dress could have really worked for her, but alas: OUT

  • Haley Buchanan

OUT. The dress is pretty. The shoes are horrendous. Just once I’d like to see her in jeans, a T shirt, and a ponytail. The whole look screams out “trying too hard.”

  • Tacky ’80s OUT.

  • Well, I’m happy to see her in something that isn’t showing as much skin as humanly possible. Of course, she covered up what skin she was showing with the hair. I agree though. Tone down the hair and makeup!

  • The hair blocks the visual interest of the dress. What’s the point of wearing something one shouldered if you’re going to block the bare part?

  • Out. She looks like one of the Barbies I had in the early ’90s. 🙁

  • I hate this so. much. Hate the hair, hate the makeup, hate the dress, hate the shoes, HATE the tattoos. Hate. OUT.

  • kimiakay

In. I do agree with you, uncles, about the hair and the shoes, but the dress is so cute that it wins the vote for me. But listen up Lea, you can be perfect here. Just listen to your uncles.

  • conniemd

Out. Like the dress, which had real potential, but overall she looks unfresh and skanky.

  • Contralto

Not sure. I like the lip color and the dress color. At least she isn’t showing acres of skin. On the other hand, I hate the shoes, I hate the tattoos, and I hate the hair.

    Wait, now I’m sure. OUT.

  • imakeart

    Please make her go away.

  • BookishBren

I HATE HATE HATE her higlights or ombre or whatever that is. Blech.

  • ankali

I’ll give her an IN for the pretty dress, but not without noting that her shoes are not great and also verge on clownishly too big.

  • PeaceBang

SO OUT. i like the ring and bracelets. Everything else is cause for eye rolling.

  • Somebody get her on Proactiv and away from the Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation. She’s gray. The hair is horrible.

  • quiltrx

OUT. I wanted to like the fabric, but it sure looks like a chintz bedroom set from the 80s.
I do like that ring, but that’s about it.

  • Kato16

When did that terrible color happen to her hair?

  • OUT. Ombre hair slung to one side, Foot tattoos. Unflattering makeup. Teresa Guidice realness.

  • JauntyJohn

IN. Pretty enough, fresh, interesting pattern. She likes to vamp, this suits her but isn’t over-the-top in that department.

  • lobsterlen

Out. Its not that bad but its Leah Michelle and for me to give her an In would take more than this. Life is not fair.

  • Ummy

So torn. On one hand, she looks probably 10 years older than she is. On the other hand, there dress fits and doesn’t give her any weird hip or boob issues – there’s nothing grossly offensive about the look. Plus fun color. I like fun color.

    In… barely.

  • zelavie

Out. She really does look like a Real Housewife. I really like her jewelry, though!

  • guest2visits

I usually hate everything she wears. This isn’t terrible but not great either. The lip color works well for her, but seems thick. The hair is styled heavy for this dress. The shoes and foot tats are miserable. The dress itself is ok, but her stance lacks ‘poise’ – she is using the same knee-hugger, toe-point pose that makes most anything look contrived. The jewelry while nice, contributes to an older-looking vibe for the whole outfit.

  • Noelle Haland

Definitely “Real Housewives Miami” and DEFINITELY OUT. Yuck.

  • Nope. She’s TWENTY-SIX!!! she should have worn the sandals that the model is wearing. I’m so tired of these pointy toe shoes already! It Spring-summer for goodness sake! Have fun…she definitely looks like she from the housewives of Glee…O..U..T!

  • bellafigura1

Exactly right on, and I would add … too tan.

  • Kate

Go back to Miami girl and find some shoes that fit you.

  • demidaemon

I will say this is quite demure for her, but it is VERY RHOOC. OUT.

  • HeyMrPhipps

Why do I keep imagining Charlotte’s “Atlantic Slutty” dress from SATC? The hair, maybe? Out.

  • Jessica O’Connell

OUT because her hair and makeup are horrible. I actually think she could have worked this look if she had styled the dress better.

  • Seriously, people? You voted this in? I mean, I’m not mad. I’m just disappointed. 🙁

  • Puma on the prowl, but still stylish though.
