IN or OUT: Emmy Rossum in Zuhair Murad

Posted on May 20, 2013

It says something about the execrable fashion on display at the Billboard awards this year that we think this is shockingly demure:

Emmy Rossum attends the 2013 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada in a Zuhair Murad long sleeve gown.

Zuhair Murad Fall 2013 Collection

And we … kinda … like it?

No, really. We’re not fans of that many sheer panels in one dress, but there’s something a little striking about the look; maybe because she kept the styling in the realm of “classy” and not “trashy.” Her face looks elegant (although her makeup gay still loves the pinkeye look) and we like the fact that her hair looks a little disheveled. If it was too polished, she’d look like Elvira.

Then again, we’re not entirely sure the argument can be made that she doesn’t look like Elvira. We suppose this one’s up to y’all.

Vote Now!

IN! She DOES look like Elvira – and that’s AWESOME!

OUT! Are you kidding me? She looks like Elvira!

The Bitter Kittens are not yet tired of Rooney Mara’s Audreybot schtick, voting the latest iteration a big ol’ IN.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

IN. I’d say more but I have a bitch of a headache that impedes coherent thought.

    • Vaniljekjeks

In!!!! You work that Morticia Addams Resort Collection, girl!

    • melanie0866

IN. It fits, her head looks awesome, and at least there’s no sideboob or buttcrack visible. I’m very tired of the black-dress-with-sheer-cutouts thing, but for Emmy, this is pretty good.

    • ampg

IN. I think it works because it’s not too boobtastic, so she actually doesn’t look all that much like Elvira. Not a big fan of the back, but from the front I think the way the lines of the dress flow makes for a really nice effect.

    • http://twitter.com/AbbottRabbit Emily Dagger

It’s not “Elvira” — it’s more “young Morticia Addams.” Which is like CLASSY Elvira. So total in.

      • ballerinawithagun

I agree. Elvira was never classy. I loved Carolyn Jones as Morticia Adams! This is tastefully sheer and beautifully made. Her make-up and hair are elegant. That makes it an In!

      • Introspective

In for me too, cause it fits like a glove, but is anyone getting the distinct whiff of Kardashian here?

    • hmariec19

      IN. She looks bangin’.

    • lehen

in. i think she looks lovely, especially compared to all the trashy, naked dresses i saw from this event. i’m looking at you, Ke$$$$ha.

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I thought Kesha’s was fine, until she TURNED TO THE SIDE. OMFG.

        • lehen

agreed! i even thought she looked good (for her)…. but then…. just, no.

        • drdarke

You know that now I have to see Ke$ha’s wardrobe malfunction dress, Marlie aka @twitter-289440786:disqus ….

    • misstressofsylar

in for me. something about the black toning down her princessy looks. I prefer edgy Emmy to sweety Emmy

    • BendinIntheWind

I’m undecided on the bottom, but I absolutely ADORE everything from the waist up

      • http://profiles.google.com/anplica Anplica Fiore

Waist up = WIN. Waist down = LOSE. Since Lose has more letters, OUT.

    • PastryGoddess

      IN

It’s surprisingly good and edgy for her

Apparently Zuhair Murad was the official costumer of the BBMA’s

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

They’re also one of JLo’s go-to designers. Coincidence? I think not.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

IN. Her hair and makeup are perfect, and I’d kill for those earrings. If this were at any other event, I might say out, but considering the venue, this is classy and demure. Plus, the dress is interesting, fits her well, and doesn’t show off the good china.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I had a similar thought. I’m over the sheer/cutouts, but at least she’s not showing off the goods.

    • http://twitter.com/Glam_Dixie Glam Dixie

I actually like this a lot. The polka dots on the sheer panels elevates it quite a bit from plain sheer panels. IN

    • Mismarker

I’m going to say IN, despite the sheer panels. Maybe it’s the dot pattern on the panels that keeps it from trashy? To my eyes, anyway.

    • http://twitter.com/ms_smartiepants Beth Mellone

Meh. It’s not horrifying like a lot of the Billboard ensembles, but that dress is just…not lovely. Her hair, makeup, and accessories are great, though. I guess if I’m grading on a BMA curve, it’s a lower-case “in.”

    • crash1212

IN. And I’m not usually a fan of multiple sheer panels either. Go figure.

    • sweetestsith

In! I don’t always like the pink-eye thing, but she’s just tan enough that I think it looks kind of pretty with her brown eyes. This time…

She looks super lovely, classy, and interesting. Love it.

    • http://twitter.com/Lily1129 Lily

IN. She has the body and coloring to pull this off beautifully.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Erin-Hines/620149309 Erin Hines

I was on board till I scrolled down. The panels in the skirt need to go, and that back is too much. From the front and on top it’s just a little naughty. Then she turn around and heads straight to TackyTown. (pop: Ke$ha)

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Totally different. I don’t understand how Ke$ha could even WALK without showing off the goods.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Erin-Hines/620149309 Erin Hines

By Ke$ha I meant ALL Ke$ha, not just last nights nightmare. And Ms Emmy should never strive for Ke$ha.

    • homofascist

It is gorgeous from the front so I say IN. That side shot is the only stinker of the bunch IMHO. It toes the line of ‘another granny panty dress’.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Also, I like the dots. It’s not *just* sheer. There’s something interesting to it, as well.

    • Emily Giovanni

I am ambivalent. I think she looks super gorgeous with dark hair, but I think it’s a bit much together with the dark dress. When I got down to your Elvira comment, you pretty much nailed my feelings. I guess I vote OUT even though I love her head and like the dress. I just don’t like them together.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

In. Like it on her. Not everyone could pull this off.

    • elirt

I’m surprised by how much I love it! It’s very flattering to her figure and she’s holding herself well. She looks great.

    • http://twitter.com/TheKarishmaster TheKarishmaster

IN!!! Classy and sassy at the same damn time.

    • nannypoo

I like it. I also like that she has deployed a second facial expression. She looks pretty.

    • Julia Dunne

OUT. Ugh. Something very frumpy and tired about that dress, for all that it’s desperately trying to be young and hip.

    • Pennymac

Sheer panels that don’t expose butt cheeks?
Proper deployment of the sheer, I must say!

    • Jessi03

I’ll give her an IN for the venue. I don’t love it, but compared to everything else we’ve seen, she looks downright elegant.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

      In. Unexpected but in.

    • RebeccaKW

In. I like the cutouts here, and I think it’s b/c I can’t see side-boob or side-ass, nor do I know the state of her waxing. I like the makeup here, and the hair. I’m really digging the whole thing.

    • Jessica Ebert

In. I think it’s sexy without being slutty. I love it! Now, if the neckline went down to her bellybutton, then it’d be Elvira!

    • http://bowtiesare.blogspot.com Meg Smitherman

In! She looks amazing. She’s one of the few people who could make that gown look classy, I think.

    • pookiesmom

      LOVE. In.

    • Golfkat

In for sure! She’s dangerously close to some side-boob, but only close, thankfully she’s not all the way there. I think she looks super glamorous. IN!

    • aeb1986

      I love it. Definitely in

    • gabbilevy

In. One of the better deployments of sheer panels I’ve seen.

    • Erica_Vuitton

IN you can’t say this chick doesn’t put in the effort. I love the hair, make up, dress, jewelry, errthing!

    • jilly_d

It was a WERQ for me until I got to the sheer thigh panels. Miss Emmy will have to settle for a mere IN.

    • TSkot

      IN. WAY IN.

    • kayleymaybe

IN! One of the best of the night (although that’s not saying much).

    • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

In and I don’t even like the dress and that backdrop is *heinous*.

    • Michee Rose

I will never understand the insistence on not dressing seasonally. Black velvet at the end of May? In Vegas? It has to be 90° there (minimum)! (And they wear sequined towels in December. WTF??)
But aside from my seasonal grumblings, it’s a striking look. Love it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1582777135 Melanie K. Morgan

I’m with you on that one. I was raised in the South, where it was “no velvet after Valentine’s.” But these younguns today, they ain’t had no good raisin’.

      • Carrieanno

Thank you for the knowledge that I’m not the only one who doesn’t get this penchant for dressing for opposite seasons.

    • Janet B

      It’s May not November!
      OUT!

(I don’t care what the temperature was inside or outside. Hmph.)

    • MzzPants

IN. I have to say, though, that I’m not a fan of the way the trending sheer skirt panels distort the figure.

    • MikeW_Vegas

Are we going to get a “rundown of shame” from this year’s BBMA? Because if these have been the “highlights”.. I”m just dying to see who was cracktastic last night.

    • http://www.argonauticos.blogspot.com/ jason

In, but mainly because she seems so pleased with herself in it.

      I can’t hate. :)

    • Sally Brownson

In. She looks good, and it’s not slutty.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I’m okay until I get to the panels in the skirt. I guess a qualified IN. It does look great on her.

    • lobsterlen

      In

    • Snailstsichr

IN. Especially compared to everyone else at the event AND because the back zipper isn’t exposed (as far as I can tell).

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

In. I saw this on her Instagram last night and loved it.

    • Tatiana Luján

I don’t like the shape of the sheer panels un the skirt, but I think she looks great anyway.
      IN.

    • CeeQ

I was already to vote it in but then I look another look at the semi sheer skirt and decided OUT. Just one too many sheer polka dot panel for me.

    • TonyGo

      In.

    • Super_Red

I’m gonna have to go with IN. Normally I hate the sheer panels, but this… works? I think? Pretty sure. In.

    • Lori

In. I hate the sheer panels on the skirt, but I like the top, the styling is really working and she looks good.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

In. The sheer panels somehow manage to add up to a design element instead of slutification.

    • http://twitter.com/SillyGrrlJen Silly Grrl

I say IN. It’s really pretty.

    • Diego!

IN, it fits her like a glove and she recovered her face! Great and “soft” make up!

    • scrappy1

In. But can someone please tell me, do people really pay to have their hair styled to look like they got caught in a windstorm? I get the JBF look, but this sort of slightly-askew thing . . . it’s purposeful?

What I’m really asking is whether “I meant to do that” is an attitude that I can safely adopt with respect to my own ill-kept mop. :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=675517274 Nora Halcyonov Lynnenko Naught

Holy IN, Batman! She looks fantastic!

    • Sweetvegan

In – she looks awesome! I would’ve like a little more color in her lipstick (but not a bright red – too vampire-ish). And I agree – the sheer panels are classy, not trashy.

    • SewingSiren

I think it looks better on her than the model. Surprisingly good from the front and back, but a little iffy on the side view.

    • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.com/ Catherine

She has been knocking it out of the park – GORGEOUS. IN, easily.

    • jw_ny

      IN

      Emmy looks gorgeous.

I probably could have done without the side leg sheer panels, but they’re not offensive.

    • Cz

She looks ready to grace the awards with her presence floating in a haze of fog and dark sparkles. In.

    • Donna Tabor

IN. Take note, Jennifer Morrison: This is how you do sheer: Covered up, not with it all hanging out and looking like underwear.

    • http://twitter.com/A_SmallFry AC

      In. She looks lovely.

    • http://twitter.com/UberChicADee Diana Giese

      In. Love this.

    • Shoelover1512

IN! I think she looks great. The dots add something to make the sheer panels not trashy. Combined with no side boob, butt crack or boobs hanging out the sheer doesn’t bug me as much as it normally does.

    • http://www.facebook.com/RocketStarling Ashley Ellen Wilson

      IN. I love this.

    • pop_top

IN. She looks great in it and I think the dress reveals just enough.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

IN – hate the dress, love her eyebrows. I’ve seen so much ugly today that a win is a win.

    • kimiakay

IN. She looks very chic, for Elvira, lol. I love the makeup, and she’s rocking that dress. The earrings are perfect. She is one beautiful lady and she looks great.

    • Coolekat

For all those sheer panels, it’s still lady-like.

    • snarkykitten

A certain blonde needs to pay attention. THIS is how you do a sheer paneled black dress without veering into lingerie territory.

    • Barbora

Biggest IN possible, love it! Go miss Emmy.

    • mjude

      no, sorry girl

    • girliecue

IN. She looks adorable and not the least bit trashy or overexposed.

    • http://twitter.com/seventhbrennan seventhbrennan

      I love it!

    • http://twitter.com/omg_dora Dora K.

Her head looks about 3000 times better than in any other picture I’ve seen of her. I had no idea she was this cute!

    • MilaXX

IN the only other look I liked last night was Madonna & she’s a bit long in the tooth for the look she was wearing

    • MartyBellerMask

      IN! She is a knockout.

    • http://www.facebook.com/henry.maler Henry Maler

IN. The implication that looking like Elvira is a bad thing is pure sacrilege!

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

IN! And I couldn’t have said it better! LOL

    • Buffy

The sheer panels are placed right, so I’ll say IN

    • drdarke

IN – she’s not showing off anything she shouldn’t in public, and the styling puts her on the elegant side of sexy rather than the trashy one.

    • Amanda

out. She looks pretty, but that dress is awful.

    • http://twitter.com/ndpndntfilm Susan Velazquez

      IN

    • sekushinonyanko

It’s very Elvira, and very movie!Ridley Duchannes. And I like all of that. In! Get it Emmy in that goth girl dress! And all of the points for refraining from dark lipstick and heavy eyeliner.

    • sweet_potato

I find the dress fabulous but Emmy Rossum is such a good girl, it seems like it’s not her dress, but it’s not an out so IN.

    • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Caterina Maria

IN, and oh, how I wish I could rock that.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jackie.atkins.31 Jackie Atkins

OUT. I’m way over the sheer panels.

    • Jillybean

This is so IN I’m surprised it isn’t a WERQ!

    • fashionzombie

IN. Love it, love her look. I may have preferred a little more color in the lip, though. Hard to tell.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

I hate sheer so hard it makes my eyes bleed, but for some reason this works. Love the earrings and makeup. In.

    • E. D.

      IN.

    • http://twitter.com/aidanboleyn Aidan B

100% in. It fits like a glove, hair and makeup are perfection, and the cutouts are tasteful. What’s not to like?

    • TheAmericaness

ohhh… In. It certainly doesn’t raise enough ire or any kind of a real gag reflex for an out… so In. May angels sing. Next.

    • ringthing

IN. When I saw this earlier today I was struck by how great she looks in black. She manages to make this look elegant.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bethany-Roullett/100000413803142 Bethany Roullett

Hmm. OUT, for her. I think that this dress really belongs on Dita von Teese.

    • GoryDetails

IN. This is probably the best use of the sheer-panel bit that I’ve seen, and I think it works quite well – though she doesn’t remind me of Elvira at all, possibly due to the lack of mind-bending cleavage {grin}.

    • conniemd

In because it’s not horrendous, but it seems a little blah to me, so a small “i” in.

    • CrazyAuntie

IN!! I love it all – hair, makeup and dress. (God, I miss “Shameless”…)

    • Synnamin

IN! LOVE this dress and she looks fantastic in it

    • StrandedFashionista

The Morticia Adams comments won me over. IN.

    • M. H. Leader

IN-IN-IN!!! She’s gorgeous and stylish. I’m not a fan of sheer cutouts, but she really does class this one up.

    • GTrain

      IN. Revealing but still tasteful

    • quitasarah

IN beautiful and tasteful, which is a lot more than can be said for many young female stars these days.

    • http://twitter.com/MarfMom Maya

      in!

    • bellafigura1

She is rocking some dicey trends. That is one beautiful woman in one beautiful dress. I maybe possibly sort of kind of want to see it in a different color, jade or purple or cobalt, but that’s nit picking.

    • unbornfawn

IN. The look is OK. I hate the see-through on the legs. Solid black from the waist down and it would be beautiful.

    • PeaceBang

I’m enamored of the Catherine Zeta-Jones hair and make-up palette, which I think is revelatory for her. And she’s pulling the dress off. I mean, not literally. IN!

    • Joyce VG

Gorgeous IN! And Elvira is gorgeous too.

    • RedRaven617

      In. Lovely.

    • Write On

      In! Puuuuurty!

    • clairellis

      In love it.

Au contraire, I think that is only her dress. Her ASS looks SPECTACULAR. Snaps on that alone! IN!

    • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

IN. This is striking and gorgeous. I hate sheer cut-outs, but this just works for me.

    • guest2visits

This was so beautiful until the skirt. The see-thru paneling was really distracting from an amazing body and gorgeous face.I think the pattern in the cut-away skirt was very cheesy, awkward. Why not match the long, narrow sheers of the sleeves.

    • http://www.facebook.com/tom.r.markiewicz Tom Markiewicz

      In!!! Love it all.

    • Jangle57

I think she looks great. While I’m not a fan of the sheer panels, this at least is pretty tasteful and not showing off her See You Next Tuesday…. IN

    • http://twitter.com/siao siao

IN! She looks gorgeous. She’s not showing as much as it seems, and without all the sheerness she’d be way overdressed for the event.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

This dress had the potential to be a disaster, but she’s wearing it very well, and looking classy. IN.

    • barbarienne

I give it a lukewarm in.

IN, and bravo for looking a little less sugary sweet.

    • Louise Bryan

Every sheer panel except the ones on the skirt!

    • Ummy

      In.

I’m a sucker for the blocking on this one. Think the dress overall does good things for her figure, and she looks classy overall.

I have my reservations about the sheer panels on the skirt, but without them the look would be boring and old.

    • quiltrx

IN. I think it works for her! The sheer-with-dots distracts a little from the “fleshiness” of most sheer inserts–plus these are placed where they’re interesting, not vulgar.

    • http://www.facebook.com/linda.shields.96 Linda Shields

wow think of how this would look on Vastra!

    • demidaemon

IN. She looks amazing, yet still held to the “standard” of the event without going too trashy.

    • bd73

      in. she looks beautiful.

    • ankali

IN. I’m not crazy about the dress and all of its sheer panels, but I think she is wringing every iota of potential out of it. She looks great.

    • http://www.facebook.com/sara.m.hottman Sara Hottman

Don’t love the earrings, and it seems a little overdone for May in Vegas, but she looks pretty, which, for being so freakin’ gorgeous, is not a given with her. So IN to Elvira.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’m shocked to give her an IN but praying that the visible ass in formal wear trend is nearly over.

    • jetpackdino

I’ve just seen what Ke$ha wore on the red carpet and I can testify that you speak the truth. There’s a traumatizing amount of ass hanging out there. And the dresses are skimpy too.

      IN.

    • The Lady

Damn it! I hate her so I was already geared up to say out, then I saw the pics. Much as I hate to admit it, despite too much sheer/dots, IN!

    • Lesley

IN. however, i am not a fan of the dress on it’s own, but on her it looks amazing. shes a beautiful girl and it was styled well.

In. Not my favorite, but it’ll do. Her eye makeup looks great, too.

if it’s not too late, I vote IN…she wears the slightly gothic well…it becomes her and as you say, it’s not trashy.

      IN!

    • EEKstl

IN! Overall, I like the dress more from the front because not loving the back sheer AND the side leg sheer. But she’s doing a good job with it.

    • RuthGo

She’s an IN, I think she looks great but I keep feeling like I saw Kelly Rowland do that dress better.

    • Sunshine16

In – it’s the neckline & sleeves that sold me. She’s been rockin’ the runway.

    • Terrible_Person

    • http://twitter.com/AnniNoone AnniNoone

If she is at an event at which this is demure, than this is an IN. She does look lovely, she somehow elevates it above illusion-panel hell, and she doesn’t even look smug. She also looks beautiful in black, which I wouldn’t have predicted.

    • oohsparkley!
