Helena Bonham Carter in London

Posted on May 31, 2013

God, we love this woman. She even found a way to do the “make sure you get the label on my bag” move in a way utterly her own.

Helena Bonham Carter heads to dinner in Hampstead, London carrying a Prada bag.

Now THAT’s how it’s done, bitches.

You can’t say she doesn’t walk the walk on the style front. Her street clothes are essentially downmarket, un-styled versions of what she wears on the red carpet. It’s straight-up Edwardian Streetwalker/Fishwife all the time. With Prada accessories, of course.

      I do love her so.

    • MilaXX

Love her & all her cray.

    • Patrick Cleary

She is so utterly herself. How can’t you love that?

    • 3boysful

“straight-up Edwardian Streetwalker/Fishwife all the time. With Prada accessories, of course.”

“Think how snug it’ll be underneath our flannel
When it’s just you and me and the English Channel!
In our cozy retreat kept all neat and tidy,
We’ll have chums over ev’ry Friday!”

      • TheAmericaness

I want to be there, even if it’s just to be a crumb in the breadbasket.

    • SapphoPoet

      My idol. Bowing down…

    • Catherine Katz

I really, really like the coat. Ruffled butt and all, it is crazy flattering from behind.

      • SophieCollier

        Me too! It’s really pretty!

    • Latin Buddy

Would her style be considered Steampunk?

      • Monabel

Good question, Latin Buddy. Can someone give us a definitive answer? With citations.

          • jenno1013

She would need more Borg-like touches to be steampunk. Helena is straight-up turn-of-the-century. The other century.

            • StellaZafella

Yeah, I think TLo say it best with ‘Edwardian Streetwalker/Fishwife’…plus, HBC clearly doesn’t take herself so seriously as to be Steam Punk…or anything but HBC.

            • fursa_saida

Yeah, she at least needs some gears and rando zippers lying around. I hope we’re all over the octopus necklaces by now.

        • Monabel

Thanks for the technical references and the informed opinions. But would the look be improved by twiddly hardware? I’d like to see that.

    • omg_dora

Of course her sturdy black coat for going shopping in has a bustle. She’s Helena Bonham Fucking Carter.

    • Andrew Schroeder

I want to be her in another life.

      • Aurumgirl

I’ve been told I “am” her, but I’d say only in the way that Saffie on Absolutely Fabulous “was” HBC.

    • gabbilevy

She is so weird. Love it.

    • meowing

Caption says she’s headed out to dinner. So, the print bag (in her right hand) must be for all the uneaten food that actresses can’t consume, right? She is adorable here.

    • stubbornthoughts

      Bitch is fabulous.

    • mjude

love her & she rarely disappoints.

    • AlisonS

I’m sitting here knowing “I know that coat” then it hits me: How I Met Your Mother!

    • formerlyAnon

Love her style. Even MORE love that while we all adore, her kids will no doubt roll their eyes and groan “Mum, really? I wish you’d at least try to look normal when you go to my school.”

    • lundibleu

LOVE HBC, she looks pretty damn good, and she looks happy. What more can you ask?

    • everest19

The shoes are amazing and perfectly HBC appropriate. Witch coven realness.

    • susan6

Her hair is so awesome. How does she get it to look so artfully disheveled?

      • marlie

I was actually wondering the same thing!

      • Qitkat

It’s probably thick, unruly, and naturally curly. The hair all the girls despaired of back in the board-straight days where us gals with thin hair ironed it. And secretly envied them.

    • marlie

I seriously want to see what the inside of her closet looks like. I think it would be amazing fun!

    • Qitkat

For once I absolutely adore everything going on here.

    • StellaZafella

Cray Cray may she be…but she’s also a very pretty woman.

    • maggiemaybe

      Teddy girl!

    • BrooklynBomber

I kind of hate Victorian/Edwardian Boho chic, but she obviously loves it, and I think she’s fabulous. So there you go.

    • Dan_In_NYC

May I just say, I just love the whole idea that she couldn’t give one flying F what any of us think, and we love her for it. WERRRRRRRRK Bitch! HBC realness forever.

      • Lattis

        like x 100000000000000000

    • alyce1213

Her face is so interesting (and beautiful). I wonder what she’s thinking about.

    • commish24

      Booties. WANT.

    • gurl boy

    • NOLA_gal

I took a picture of HBC in her Merchant/Ivory days to the hairdresser once and said I wanted my hair to look just like that when she was done. She laughed at me.

    • IraKi

This is what I call “sense of style”. You may not like it but you cannot deny it is unique and it appears to be a true form of expressing oneself!

    • StrandedFashionista

What really makes it for me is that she’s rocking the Prada in a completely ‘I’m a woman who needs to get shit done and my bag just happens to be worth more than your car’ kind of way. And that’s why I love her.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

are those ruffles on her coat? adorbs!

    • conniemd

“Edwardian streetwalker/fishwife” is such a perfect description of Helena Bonham car. The boots, the hair wisping loose, the black.

    • Buffy

want the coat, want the shoes even if they’d look all kinds of ridiculous on me

    • majorbedhead

      Such a crush….

    • Bethany Roullett

Does anyone have any info on who made the coat? I wants it SO BAD. I also want to see pictures of it to see if I can make some sort of a cheap knockoff version, because I very likely can’t afford the real one.

    • Anniebet

Can you imagine Gwenyth Paltrow in this? Or Solange Knowles? Or Jennifer Lawrence? Nope, neither can I.

This belongs to HBC. She owns the patent for dressing/looking/being this persona she’s created and I can only be in awe of such brilliance. The world would be so boring without a little quirky to pep us up.

      • Corsetmaker

There isn’t the same emphasis on glossiness with UK actors though. Not the same theatre/movie division so they tend to be more arty and bohemian generally. It’s just the HBC has become better known globally. But look at make actors like McKellen, Hurt etc. Scruffs the lot of them :)

    • MartyBellerMask

      Want that coat!!!

    • Emmyllou

      I love her too.

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

Do you think her house (their house) is a mess? She looks so disheveled and unorganized.

I like the way she holds her bag, better than the way Reese holds hers.

    • notterriblybitter

What’s the temp in London this time of year? She must be dripping with sweat underneath all that.

      • alocin

Was there last week. It was not warm. In fact it was downright freezing for a couple of days, to the point I had to buy a new coat which was a challenge given the shops were full of summer clothes.

      • Melissa Brogan

I don’t know when this was taken, but the highs for this week in London are mid 60s (Fahrenheit)

      • Corsetmaker

A friend in London mentioned hail the other day. The weather this spring has been peculiar. Coldest in 50 years and only starting to level out now. So no, probably not.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

      Love it. Character. Style. Shoes.

    • Belvane

LOVE HER. Love the ruffled coat, love the hair, love the grubby little boots. Love that FACE.

    • msdamselfly

I think her style is sloppy and unbecoming. Does she thinks she’s so beautiful that she needs to downplay it? I don think so.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I love her insouciance. (That was the word that popped into my head when I looked at these images, and since I know you boys love fabulous vocabulary, I thought I’d pull a leaf from your books.)

On a complete tangent, I feel like both T and Lo would enjoy the webcomics of Kate Beaton if you guys don’t read them already – she writes short comics inspired by history and literature, and the word “fishwife” just reminded me of her work. She had a great Gatsby set a while back, among other hilarious comics (one of my favorite panels was Tom Buchanan describing his old money as being “OLD AS BALLS”). She is especially endeared to me for making a comic strip devoted to Simon Bolivar and his manic need to liberate EVERYONE.

    • kimiakay

I wonder if Ms. Paltrow and Ms. Helena are friends in London? Wouldn’t that be an interesting conversation? Style-wise, I love her boots and the flowery satchel.

    • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

And I absolutely love her style.

    • NoveltyRocker

She has a point of view. Win.

    • PeaceBang

She owns this look. And – lacy stockings. So much love. I also love that neighborhood of London!

“Tlo said: It’s straight-up Edwardian Streetwalker/Fishwife all the time.”

I was going to say Stevie Nicks.

    • ItsDicey

The girl has a very defined style, whether you approve or not. Me likey. Most of the time.

    • HeatherMcIlrath

This bitch lives the life I so desperately want to live. Helena, can I be you when I grow up?

    • quiltrx

She is just so effing fabulous, isn’t she? I adore her, and I wish I could be she and Tim’s BFF and we could all make fabulous adventures out of such mundane things as dinner.
And that coat is way past wonderful.

    • Mona_Visa

Remember that amazing moment in Fight Club where she says, “How’s this for not making a big thing of it?” And then she turns and walks away from Ed Norton… She’s totally got that exact Marla attitude here.

And I *love* that the Prada bag looks like it’s not just for display.

    • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

She’s so fucking fabulous! I would LOVE to have dinner with her and get her really drunk on red wine just to see what happens.

    • Melissa Brogan

Much like Dita Von Teese, HBC’s style is never something I’d choose for myself, but she totally owns it. I admire that.

    • AC

Love her. But how is she not sweating to death under all those layers! Maybe it’s just too hot here in NYC.

      • Corsetmaker

Coldest spring in 50 years in the UK.. I believe there was hail in London a few days ago. Although it’s sunny up here this week.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      HBC in charge!

    • GTrain

      luv huh

    • Julie Lane

it’s like she has zero fucks to give what anybody thinks about her. And that is why we love her

    • Lattis

What do you figure she wears to just schlep around the house? I would love to know. She is my hero.

    • Corsetmaker

I want that coat and those boots! She’s looking stunning in the current Vogue – cover and spread. Such a beautiful woman.

    • PeggyOC

Just once I want to see her coming out of the gym. Her workout wear must be hilarious.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Just so crazy and fabulous all at the same time!

    • Nikki

Her on Graham Norton, oh she’s delightful!
