Girl, That’s Not Your Look: Vera Farmiga in Valentino

Posted on May 13, 2013

For once, we really wish someone had just worn the look the way the model did.

Vera Farmiga attends ‘Bates Motel: Reimagining A Cinema Icon’ special screening at The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, California in Valentino.

Valentino Resort 2013 Collection/Model: Caroline Brasch Nielsen

Because we’re sorry, this is NOT working for us in the slightest. She’s fabulous, but this outfit instantly goes to “elderly secretary” territory the way she’s wearing it. Maybe some little sprite like Elle Fanning could make this work, but most grownup ladies should seriously think about ways to make pieces like this look young and hot if they’re committed to wearing them. That BELT. Actually, we’re not sure which is making us cringe more; the belt or the shoes. We will never understand wearing an entirely black outfit and then putting on flesh-colored shoes. Bleh. She totally could have pulled off the blouse with skinny pants and a cute, colorful pair of shoes.

I don’t hate it. I think the shoes are so wrong for this look sand she could have styled it better, but I don’t hate it

  • misstressofsylar

count me in the “i don’t hate it camp” too..I would have preferred more kick ass shoes and a different hairstyle (or color, i prefer her as a brunette). i love the way that skirt makes her ass sing!

  • It is a little mature for her, but it could have been ok if it weren’t for the shoes. Everything fits well, and the proportions are correct, but the shoes are painfully off-target.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

That is the Belt of Doom. Nobody would look good wearing it.

    • Mar8

It reminds me of the belts that came in the witch costumes when i was a kid

  • thecitysleeps

Awwww I like this. I’d have chosen different coloured shoes, but I like the secretary look I guess.

  • I don’t hate this at all. Well, I don’t love the shoes, but the rest is beyond fine. I think she feels great in it, and I’m not mad at that.

  • carnush

Agree. The pieces are way too mature-looking to be styled so traditionally. She looks like a politician’s wife at a fundraiser.

  • Can you image Helen Mirren in this (with better shoes)? HOT!

    • Janet B

I’m afraid she’d wear those black tights she favors.

      • PastryGoddess

It’s getting warmer so she may decide to burn those tights

        • One can only hope that she eschews the black tights for perhaps a nude color (Helen’s going to wear her hose, no matter what we bitter kittens say.

  • hughman

The popped collar instantly makes it “Jr. Ad Exec who puts her career ahead of personal life” territory to me.

  • Actually, I don’t think the look itself is that bad. It’s the way the collar is so disheveled that’s bothering me.

  • MilaXX

I was going to say the outfit she is wearing isn’t that bad save for the shoes, but the model’s look is so much cooler.

  • OrigamiRose

I wish we could round up each and every last pair of flesh-colored heels and blast them into space.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

From your lips to god’s ears.

I think she looks pretty great. I don’t think I’d like this as much for her with the pants… she’s a “grown woman” and she can look beautiful and feminine with relative ease. But styled like this, she probably needs the skirt give a little sexy. Pants and this styling would have been really boring. I recall some pretty bad misses the last few times she was featured, so I was expecting worse.

  • “Skirts should always be below the knee. Minimal makeup and jewelry and a very light perfume, if you must. Do not show any cleavage. Heel height should be sensible. Cross your legs at the ankle, not the knee, and make sure you inform your prospective employer of your typing and shorthand speeds.” Emily Post on applying for a secretarial position, circa 1962.

  • SylviaFowler

    Funeral attire

  • Michael_Jones

In no way would I defend Vera’s footwear with this look, but the shoes on the model are possibly worse still…

  • moppet

The skirt is accentuating her curves in a great way, though. As for the rest, um.

  • This is very elegant, in the real-estate-agent-lady way.

  • Rand Ortega

It’s a bit stodgy. That belt is riding high in Michelle Obama territory & she’s abandoned them, thank Goddess.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Yeah, I agree – that should have just been done the way the model wore it. Because not only does the “basic secretarial skirt” not work, but neither does that much too overly-wide belt – it’s literally pushing her boobs up and making them do weird things!

  • Janet B

I try to make it work for her, but I always start with “if she were 4 – 6 inches taller”.

  • jmorino08

I really like this. She’s working it!

  • BrooklynBomber

Totally agree. It manages to look youthful with the pants, though not with the skirt.

  • I sort of love it, except the shoes. It’s not edgy, but it looks classic and pretty to me.

  • CeeQ

    Yeah those shoes sucketh.

  • Call me Bee

Yes! This is one instance where pointy shoes make her legs look a little stumpy. And that’s a shame.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

She took that look from ‘Awesome’ to ‘Office’ in record time, didn’t she?

  • carpediva

I can see on paper why it shouldn’t work but I think she looks pretty great, and the fit is fantastic. The shoes we shall never speak of again.

  • Barbora

    Bad outfit you picked, Norma.

  • j_anson

Hmm, I think my elderly secretary idea differs from TLo’s, because I actually like most of this. I agree that the belt and shoes could be better, though; and I actually think the hair is the worst offense. That shape and arrangement is doing nothing for her. But I like the core of the outfit.

  • E. D.

More interesting shoes would have helped. That belt needs to be transported back to the 80s.

  • Pennymac

Those shoes! NoNoNoNoNonononononoooo. And I wore that belt with a Black and White suit in 1983; (Just like the mom in Ferris Buellers Day off.)

I do like that top though.

  • LauraWL

Disagree. I love the popped collar and think the shoes actually work here bc of the liner on the shirt. And I’m usually on the anti-nude shoe train.

  • TheAmericaness

I think she’s actually trying to match the shoes with the flesh tones in the top under the lace – or is that her skin? That’s why the white lapels bother me.. and shouldn’t large, wide belts like that be used in general on simpler backgrounds? It looks too busy to me with that lace and cut.

  • Visions of the famous Albert Nippon collar and cuffs from the eighties where it should have stayed!

  • Imasewsure

She can do so much better… not good!! Not “hate” territory (except the shoes) but dull and anonymous

  • ankali

Is anyone watching the show? I’ve only seen the pilot because it’s the only episode streaming anywhere for free. I thought La Farmiga was amazing in it, and I’m wondering if it would be worth my while to cough up for the rest of the season.

  • kimiakay

My god, at first glance I thought she was Patricia Arquette. Each piece of this has a proportion problem I think. Plus for me, the collar and cuffs on that lace look strange. Somehow they just don’t go. And of course the shoes. All shoes of that color should have a “mother may I?” tag on them before wearing.

  • Diego!

    Sarah Jessica Parker’s older sister???

  • Tatiana Luján

That skirt is doing all sorts of fabulous things to her ass and she knows it. I would keep the skirt and change everything else.

  • Jennifer Coleman

She (or her stylist) totally oldladyfied the outfit.

  • MoreShoes

    I agree completely.

  • I thought office secretary immediately. I quite liked the model’s shoes, but in a different color.

  • Carol

Yeah this collar’s popped, because she’s the fucking man, and everyone should know it!

  • She’s playing an archetypal mother in a Hitchcockian story; this is her take on Tippi Hedren, I’m fine with it. Talk about hourglass figure!

  • Stumpy torso.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

    Paging Florence Welch.

  • lobsterlen

I love what the model was wearing. Would wear it in heartbeat.

  • bellafigura1

I have to say, I don’t love her in short hair either. She has beautiful hair — somehow this is deeply average.

  • Carly Warnock

This would look amazing, in the way the model wore it, on Kate Mara.

  • Rebecca Jay

    Wow, nice ass, Norma!
