Florence Welch in Miu Miu

Posted on May 02, 2013

Check out Miss Flo getting sexy on the red carpet!

Florence Welch attends the world premiere of ‘The Great Gatsby’ in New York City in Miu Miu dress accessorized with a Miu Miu bag and shoes and Sorellina jewelry.

Although we have to laugh, because Flo’s version of sexy apparently requires about 40 pounds of material. We think this is a look only she can pull off – and she’s pulling it off really well here. The color looks amazing on her. But we have to admit, the bodice is odd. It almost looks like a coat in that 4th picture. We love a coat dress as much as the next fashion queen, but a coat gown sounds really heavy. And the scarf around her neck is very her, but we can’t say we love it; not with that complicated collar and really odd cutout in the back. Then again, this thing looks like it would be fairly heavy and hot, so we suppose that cutout’s a sort of vent for her bodyheat.

We don’t hate it, though. It’s really striking and it suits her so well that we pretty much love it. That’s the dress we’re talking about. The accessories, on the other hand…

We wouldn’t mind the shoes. She favors heavy shoes; it’s a heavy gown; and she’s clearly supporting the brand. We’d let them slide, but you add that granny-chic purse to the look and suddenly our eyelids start twitching. A bridge too far, Flo. Don’t let them just load you up on the brand like that. You wind up looking like a department store display.

If they ever do a drag version of “On The Town”, Flo has one costume ready to go.

    • Qitkat

Ha! I misread this as “Our Town.” That would be an entirely subversive show.

      • TheAmericaness

        Oh dear god, please!

Edit – As in, yes… I want to see that. 🙂

        • Qitkat

Why not? Now that I think about it, so many older shows have been revived. This would be quite the contemporary twist. Let’s go find some backers 😉

Love the color, but the scarf is a little too cowgirl and the shoes scream tap number at the dance recital. The dress has some good ideas but it is a little heavy, especially for spring.

  • SewingSiren

Love the dress. Love the shoes. Love the bag, but it’s for a daytime look. Kill the scarf.

  • Someone got excited with the Bedazzler! That being said, I do love this on her… This color of navy is striking with her coloring.

  • The color is amazing, and the dress looks like it fits well. It seems to be a wintery sort of gown, but then maybe it is cold where she is. I think this is one of her better looks.

  • MilaXX

loose the granny bag & the old lady kerchief and this is a win in my book.

    • The kerchief makes it a bit Dale Evans really, doesn’t it? But the colour and sparkle is gorgeous.

    • HengRu

Exactly! I love the dress and shoes but would leave off the scarf and find a different bag. And maybe slap a sparkly belt on the dress.

  • Tatiana Luján

    Man, this girl has presence!

    • Vickiefantastico

That’s exactly what I was thinking! I don’t love the dress itself, but I can’t deny that she looks amazing. I think most of that is pure attitude.

      • DeborahJozayt

It kinda looks like she took posing lessons, based on how her older pics looked compared to more recent ones. It makes a Helluva big difference how you stand.

  • I agree about the bag, but I think she looks stunning in that gown.

  • nannypoo

Her makeup is fabulous. She often looks exhausted and much older than she is, but here she looks healthy and beautiful.

  • Sarah

I LOVE IT. Navy is my best friend, as a pale pale almost-redhead. She knows our freckly secrets, it would appear.

  • She is on my list of irrational celebrity hate..can’t stand.

  • Lori

    I want her hair.

  • Sara L.

LOVE the shoes. I need them. I think she looks pretty spectacular all around, really.

  • Imasewsure

Don’t love the outfit but love her – the posing is really fun and she’s rocking her own thang so I’m fine with it (except the scarf which I hate)

  • The tie throws it off for me. Otherwise i quite like it.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Don’t like the dress at all. It fits too weirdly on her, and I suspect it won’t fit anyone else better either. Flo’s fabulous for heavy drama looks, but this one could be a helluva lot better.

  • jw_ny

Love the dress…it’s very Flo! It does seem rather out of season tho. Color is great on her, and the fit seems close to perfect. Dislike the scarf, bag and shoes.

  • flamingoNW

The scarf is so “Flight Attendant.” It MIGHT have worked for me without that…

  • 3boysful

She’s 1950’s Cowgirl from the front, and Sailor Girl from the back. Lovely shade of blue.

I call this greater than the sum of its parts. Partly due to the dress (I’m a big fan) but even more due to the Power of the lady. Ms. Welch has a great gaze – almost commanding, certainly engaging. And once I saw her in concert, I’ve never looked at her photos the same – they really don’t convey the enormously engaging quality of her stage presence.

Love the shoes & dress. Borderline on the purse – it could, so easily, have been worse – but I part ways with the neck tie. It’s too much of the same. I like matchy, usually, so I wouldn’t be opposed to something – jewelry? – that picked up either the blue fabric or the blue sparklies. But to repeat both was excessive.

I liked her rocker-chick in Prada, much more.

  • quiltrx

Looking at the bits and bobs on it, I think the scarf was (for some reason) intended to go with the gown (?). I love the gown…so very Flo, and if it didn’t have its oddities, it really wouldn’t be SO her. And those shoes are KILLA. NEED a black/silver pair!
And if you haven’t heard her song for the film, go check it out–it’s terrific, particularly for us Flo fans.

    Norma Desmond realness

  • The color is great, and there are some interesting elements to this dress, but I don’t love it. I know the “rules” for Flo are different than the average ladystar, but for some reason, this look is less than the sum of its parts.

  • Corsetmaker

I like the idea of the dress but not the actual dress.
Hate the beading, it’s totally bridesmaid dress beading and it looks wrong, cheapens the whole thing. I’d rather have lost the beading and had some sort of detail down the front. At the moment it looks like a coat with the buttons removed.

  • Minus the tie, I love this. The bag is great, but maybe not with evening wear. She looks fantastic.

  • mhleta

Great color, fantastic face (those eyes!) but not good back. It looks like her derriere popped through the window to say hello. She needs to beat her stylist with that bag and then throw it off a bridge.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

Love the shoes, the bag is definitely for day, and I could do without the scarf, but God, she gives me CHILLS!

  • I wish she was wearing a hat/fascinator.

  • MarissaLG

Hate the bag & shoes, and I think I would prefer a necklace instead of the scarf but she’s rocking the look.

  • Sara h

She. Is. Wearing. An. ASCOT?! why? The dress clearly doesn’t need any more details.

  • Florence, of all people, is hitting just the right vibe here. I swear it’s the shoes. Jennifer Morrison’s lace tablecloth travesty might’ve been less hideous with buckle shoes; they’re so iconic to the era.

  • Love all the sequins, and blue is her color. A Werq for me!

  • 3rd pic: Leo and Flo – siblings in crime-solving or con artistry!

  • kathrineb

I love this colour on her! I am NOT feeling the matchy-matchy short scalf with this look.

  • She looks like Roy Rogers or an old-fashioned country singer with the collar and the tie. I love her, but I don’t think her back looks very pretty. I’m not sure that part of the back is anyone’s best.

  • librarygrrl64

I would love this for fall. Without the cutout.
