Fan Bingbing in Louis Vuitton at Cannes

Posted on May 16, 2013

Geez. Maybe we shouldn’t front-load the day with so much breathtaking fabulosity. Then again, you’ll all be sick of it by the time Cannes is all over, so we might as well indulge now.

Fan Bingbing attends the Opening Ceremony and ‘The Great Gatsby’ Premiere during the 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival in a Louis Vuitton gown paired with a Louis Vuitton minaudière and Chopard jewelry.

Kind of an odd gown, really. It looks pretty standard from far away, but you get in close and that bodice suddenly looks kinda … crafty. Not in a bad way, though. We like that it’s a little rougher-looking than the rest of the dress. Keeps it from being too standard. She’s stunning, the dress is stunning, and the accessories are perfect. But we have to say, we’re disappointed with the hair. There’s nothing wrong with it, but she looks so amazing when she wears it up.

Drop dead gorgeous. But I agree about the hair. The gown has a train, her mane doesn’t need a train of its own.

  • My only problem is that the bodice of the dress is clearly too long for her wee frame, making it bunch up oddly. Otherwise a slam dunk of a look. Brava to Ms. Bing Bing!

  • Michee Rose

The bodice doesn’t fit right…it’s folding under her breasts, like it has a stay there and the top is sliding. I don’t think it’s her best color, but overall the effect is good.

  • Please tell me those aren’t rain droplets of the dress. 🙁

    • 3boysful

It’s something. I saw it, too, even some streaks, and wondered if it was my monitor.

    • IAmJ

There are people with umbrellas in the last picture posted.

    • ballerinawithagun

I just read an article that it was pouring in Cannes! Celebrities drying their hair in the bathroom. But apparently they still had a great party.

    • Definitely rain drops!! Horrors. You’d think they’d put up a marquee or some such!

  • zenobar

Was it raining in Cannes? The dress looks badly water-stained. That’s the thing about a train – the damn dress is going to drag through all the moisture (and general cruddiness) on the ground.

    • MilaXX

  • Funkykatt

She and the dress are definitely stunning but every time I see a dress with a train like that I can’t keep but thinking how dirty it can get if the floor isn’t spotless.

    • shorty j

I’m glad I’m not the only person who thinks of that. I just imagine that if I had a train, it would be full of dog hair before I even left the house.

      • Funkykatt

Hahahaha. Cat hair here. I keep the dogs outside as one is an Aussie Shep-St Bernard mix and all he does is shed.

  • Simply perfection. I like the hair down, it’s elevating the romantic feel of it all.

  • SugarSnap108

What is that guy’s hand doing? Holding up the bodice? I’m not a fan of that bodice at all. But I am a fan of the Bing, and the fabulousness here is almost entirely her, in my opinion. A dress would have to be aggressively ugly to detract from her gorgeousness.

    • Holding an umbrella I believe.

      • MilaXX

        Yes it was pouring

      • SugarSnap108

I suppose that makes more sense 🙂

  • 3boysful

I have to be the dissident and say this is an ugly dress. The bodice doesn’t fit right and the seams are poorly done, esp around the bodice. It’s too tight around the top of the hip. I would be bummed if I were the beautiful Bing Bing.

    • mshesterp

Agreed–and I don’t think the pink goes with her coloring at all. I just don’t care for it or the “crafty” bodice, which looks cattywampus to me. She’s beautiful, but she deserves better.

    • filmcricket

Yeah, I agree. It’s making her look hippy, which is absurd.

    • butterflysunita

Yes, she is gorgeous and I sort of like seeing her hair loose for a change. But the dress doesn’t quite do her justice.

  • imspinningaround

I will physically fight her for that minaudière.

    • sagecreek

Well, damn. Now I have to go look up the word “minaudiere”.

      • I had to do that too… and here I was thinking I was up on my fashion/accessory knowledge…

But it’s a fancy word for ‘tiny clutch’, right? Or ‘this won’t fit your iPhone’?

    • jetpackdino

Agreed. I love it. It was a split-second, almost involuntarily reaction I had when I saw the close-up.

  • In_Stitches

It has a very 90’s feel; I’m loving it.

  • I’m not so sure I agree. Ms. Bing Bing can make just about anything look fabulous, but this dress is just not amazing in my book. It’s poorly fitted around her waist, and the bodice plus the color do not go together well. The hair, is certainly tragic. She can definitely do better.

    • Sobaika

Agreed! She’s lovely, perfect, angelic, etc. but the dress is barely so-so.

    • That’s just it…even though i don’t care for that bodice i still gasp at her beauty and how perfect she looks no matter what she wears, hair up or down. She truly resembles a porcelain doll!

  • Tatiana Luján

I love that the hair is down for once, her hair is beautiful. I don’t like the gown, it’s boring in spite of the craftiness of the bodice. The wrinkles around the waist also tell that the dress is too tight.
I love everything except the dress.

  • kaycem

even her nail polish is stunning. god i heart fan bing bing.

  • Pretty…as in basic! Gown could stand to loose half that train. Bodice n torso do not fit! She usually has her clothes fit to perfection! OOPS on this one!

  • aeb1986

    wow, show STOPPING!

  • Pennymac

There’s a bit of a fit issue. But, Le Sigh. She makes me want to switch teams!

    • Right? Me, too. Her and Christina Hendricks.

      • Pennymac

        Totes on Ms Hendricks!

        • formerlyAnon

Nobody ever inspires me to want to switch teams, my hetero genes are just too strong, I guess. But if anyone ever did it would be Christina Hendricks. She is probably the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen, and the most attractive feminine woman. (To me, obviously, since all these things are subjective).

  • MilaXX

I give her props for having hair that didn’t deflate or frizz in the rain

  • Kate

Nope. This looks like jr prom to me.

  • sagecreek

I want to eventually see one picture of FBB not looking fabulous. I mean, doesn’t she ever have a bad day?

  • carnush

Her face is just too much.

  • Whatever about the dress – it’s fine, if kind of bog-standard red carpet fare. But good gravy, her face. I can’t even with that face. It makes me lose the ability to type and then wants to send me directly into purple prose. So I’ll stop now and just stare.

  • Janet B

Amazing how she can make an ill-fitting dress look so glamorous.

  • How does she come without wrinkles? Did she stand straight up in the car? And while Ms. Bing Bing (the funnest name around) looks fabulous, it lacks her usual WERQ (in part because it’s not an awesome Asian designed dress.) I’m hoping she pulls that out before she leaves though!

    • I was thinking the same thing upon looking at these pictures. Perhaps Ms. Bingbing commissioned one of the new TLo horse trailers for celebrities.

  • Judy_S

I wonder if she wore her hair down in order to balance/hide the apparent asymmetry of the bodice with asymmetric hair? Anyway, a delight.

  • Corsetmaker

So, what the hell are Louis Vuitton doing putting out a gown that collapses on the bodice like that. Even when a bit tight a gown of the sort of price that will be should have enough structure to hold it’s shape!

    • formerlyAnon

Offends your sense of craftsmanship & professionalism, does it? I don’t remember you ever letting loose with even a mild curse word before. 😉

      • Corsetmaker

        LOL! It’s been a hard week 😉

  • alyce1213

I don’t like this dress at all. It doesn’t fit her and it doesn’t suit her.
She also wore a green dress at Cannes that was drop-dead, earth shattering gorgeous.

  • MB

This just looks like a Cache prom dress from 1997 to me. She’s better than this.

    • JasmineAM

My mom made my pre-school “prom” dress from a fabric EXACTLY like this. It was in 1996 so this is so right on LOL.

  • KSpence

It looks like someone is giving her a Purple Nurple in that penultimate pic.

  • Jessi03

She looks so gorgeous that I actually gasped. That being said, to quote the great Cher Horowitz, that dress “is a full-on Monet.”

  • Sara Brams-Miller

The hair definitely takes away from the beauty of it.

  • Susan Rappenwolf

I am waiting for her to sprout little rainbow-colored fairy wings.

  • Those darts are painfully odd. I’m havin’ a case of the vapahs.

  • decormaven

Keep the confections coming! I’m also not a fan of the hair style, but that’s a gorgeous color of frock on her.

  • SewingSiren

The gown looks soiled at the hem. And maybe rained on? Further , close ups of designer gowns should NEVER look crafty. Louis Vuitton should stick to bags.

  • Nariya

She deserves a medal for looking that unwrinkled in that fabric.

  • Stubenville

She always looks lovely, and I’m with everyone on the odd fit around the bustline. Is the seam on a diagonal (see 2nd photo)? I actually like her hair down for a change.

Does anyone know Ms. Fan’s story? Is she wealthy in her own right or from a wealthy family? Just curious.

  • PeggyOC

She works everything she wears like it owes her rent, but I don’t think this is a kindly shade of pink on her. She can do better!

  • jetpackdino

The rain has no right to fall on this amazing dress. Stop!

And I love how the press behind her has to be dressed up in black and white. That takes the whole photo to another level.

    • Qitkat

Apparently all press* must apply early to be accredited and badged through the official festival. They do have much more of a classy look than we normally see. The official website for the festival is full of interesting up-to-date videos, photos, and information. I never looked at it before. Worth checking out.

*[apocryphal] With an engraved invitation reading “All press must dress in black tuxedos and bow ties; shoes must be polished”; “Don’t you dare disgrace our event with your ratty tee shirts and torn jeans.”

      • jetpackdino

Wow. Well, I love the results. Gotta admit, the French do make the world a more beautiful place.

I mean, just look at the 5th photo… That one photographer behind her is staring at her like he’s mesmerized. If he was in a ratty shirt and jeans, I would think he was a creeper. Since he’s in a tux, it looks like a James Bond moment.

And I will check out that website! Thanks for the tip. 🙂

  • NYCGlamourpuss

    Just so beautiful she’s ridiculous!

  • sekushinonyanko

I think the big issue with her hair is the rain.

  • TheAmericaness

    Love it!

  • I LOVE this, but the fit seems just a teensy bit wonky around the waist. It looks like she just needs a minion to straighten everything out, and then she’d be fine. Otherwise, she looks amazing.

  • Patricia Gillett

The color of this is delicious but the fit in the middle is giving me fits and giving her extra pounds she probably does not have. Not sure what happened there because she is typically so impeccable.

    • Gwyndall

It almost looks like someone took up extra length at the waist, rather than hemming the mass expanse at the bottom. Unfortunately, the seam and the folded fabric below it in some shots, are not helping the look.

And how do you make Fan Bing Bing look chunky!?!?!

  • Sara__B

I’m disappointed she’s not wearing wearing a gown that references her cultural heritage. She’s not AS gorgeous and stunning as usual.

  • Tracy_Flick

Something about this dress just isn’t totally coming together for me, but I can’t really put my finger on it. I think the bodice and the skirt are fighting a bit. The bodice is so fancy, and the skirt is just 400 yards of heavy pinkness….

  • stubbornthoughts

Her face is magnificent, but that gown looks way too prom to me.

  • j_anson

I’d be more impressed with this if the dress actually fit her.

  • TLJezebel

Did she arrive in the TLo horsetrailer for ladystars? Smooth as can be!

  • another_laura

it’s a dress for photos, to be sure. And I have problems with the fit around the waist (get it altered!). However, the overall effect is darned good. But not great.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

This is a pretty jejune look for Fan Bingbing. She usually brings more drama to Cannes.

  • ilikemints

Minus the train, this is almost exactly what I wore to sophomore year winter formal. In 2002. It’s just really not working for me. I also wish she’d fill in her eyebrows.

  • CommentsByKatie

Darling BingBing, you are too good for this dress. It has failed you and must be set it on fire. Love, Me.

  • I love this and I love her sense of style.
But I agree, I’d loved to see something different with her hair.

  • Anniebet

J’adore the color palette on this dress, and had a mini swoon seeing the nail polish color against it. Beautiful bling for Bingbing. (sorry, couldn’t help myself).

  • Rand Ortega

    Fan Blandbland.

  • Cz

She is beautiful. Even in a dress that looks prom-y to me.

  • MissAmynae

I am so very, very disappointed that she didn’t wear a traditional gown like she has the last 3 years. They have been so mindblowingly gorgeous and simply breathtaking. Boo for going European. She’s always beautiful, but her opening looks at Cannes is something I look forward to more than Oscar night.

  • capybara_cafe

I find her fake smile to be sort of terrifying. I’m not sure what it is about her, but she makes me want to hide under my bed.

  • frannyprof

Not my favorite Bingbing look, but far and away better than most of her contemporaries.

  • E. D.

    Eh, too shiny.

  • formerlyAnon

I wish it fit better, but I love that bodice. I love how the look of the embellishments changes from different angles and distances. I am sure it was (mostly) thought out to create the effect(s) and that fascinates me.

  • l_c_ann

Yes, the wet umbrella in the background confirms that the rain DARED touch her (and her gown.) How dare it?

  • MemHey

  • She looks amazing, but it’s kind of dissapointing when compared with last year’s double-WERQ. I still can’t stop gushing over the Chris Bu Kewen whole look, it was the ultimate definition of perfection.

  • CeeQ

She is so beautiful I can’t see anything else but seething Asian envy. But I’m already Asian, so just seething envy then.

  • She’s wearing dusty rose, and she’s working it. I am bowing down.

  • jmorino08

The bodice is actually my favorite part. The pink of the bottom 7/8 of the dress is entirely too Barbie for someone as fabulous as FBB.

  • LaSylphide

She’s always fabulous, but to be honest I can’t get behind this look. The pink is a good color on her, but the dress just doesn’t do anything for me. And what’s with the fold at the waist? Is that deliberate? If so, it’s a little odd; if not, then maybe the fit is off. Anyway, who’s looking at a mere dress when you’ve got that face to feast on?

  • dashwoodstole

Don’t like it, too prom dress.

  • librarygrrl64

I’m just impressed that it wasn’t a wrinkled mess.
