Elisabeth Moss in 3.1 Phillip Lim

Posted on May 31, 2013

Gotta say, of all the ladystars to get the blonde pixie, Lizzie just may be the one to have gotten the most mileage out of the change.

Elisabeth Moss attends the Variety Emmy Studio in West Hollywood, California in a 3.1. Phillip Lim dress paired with Aldo pumps.

3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Marihenny Rivera Pasible

Aldo ‘Bouaflea’ Pump

That is easily the best her hair has ever looked since she’s been in the public eye. And the blonde really suits her. All her features pop now. We find ourselves wishing she’d picked a pair of statement earrings just to set the whole look off.

As for the dress, well… it’s certainly provocative, no? We are on the record many times over as hating the Frankendress, but there’s something quite interesting about this take on the concept; as if she was literally wearing two dresses and one was in the process of coming off. But interesting doesn’t always mean pretty and while we salute her stepping outside the box, we’re thinking this one might be a little tough to pull off on a red carpet.

Oh, and the shoes, while fabulous were the wrong way to go. Instead of matching them to the sexier leather “underdress,” they should’ve been matched to the traditionally feminine floral parts of the dress.

I don’t mind the front of the dress, but the back of it looks like a flowery dress is being removed/unzipped over some dominatrix under-gear. I agree on the hair though. A lot better than it used to be.

    • My opinion exactly.

    • editrixie

You say that as if it’s a bad thing. 😉

      • Silly Grrl

Hahah I’m not against it, but that floppy strap would make me insane if I had to wear it.

    • Nelliebelle1197

I think that is the point of the design.

  • Those shoes are, like, so totally eighties!

    • decormaven

Yep, right out of the “Some Like It Hot” video from Power Station.

      • ItsDicey

“Some like it hot, and some sweat when the heat is on
Some feel the heat and decide that they can’t go on
Some like it hot, but you can’t tell how hot till you try
Some like it hot, so let’s turn up the heat till we fry”

        Ah, memories.

        • decormaven

Yes! I had to YouTube that video after posting it. God, I miss Robert Palmer. Talk about class…. that man had it in spades.

    • ItsDicey

Maybe that’s why I like them. Ha!

  • Spicytomato1

She looks phenomenal. Soft, fresh, mod. About as far from Peggy as she can get, good for her.

I was thinking the shoes were a nice counterpoint to the floral part of the dress but really what do I know?

    • gabbilevy

I like them, but the color is just a tiny bit too bright for the dress, so to my eye, they clash rather than complement.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

That is a provocative little dress, Miss Olson! I sort of love it, because it is so interesting in such a sexy way.

    • Isabel

Maybe she wants to be considered for other roles and is showing that she is a versitile actress.

      • Angela_the_Librarian

I just saw her in a BBC mini-series called Top of the Lake (on Netflix). It was a missing person/murder mystery type thing. The conclusion was rather disturbing, but the scenery was beautiful (filmed in New Zealand) and I thought Elisabeth did a good job playing the tortured detective character (though I wasn’t so sure about her Australian accent).

        • Magatha

Well, her character lives in Australia, but grew up in New Zealand, so maybe Elisabeth was doing a particularly nuanced blend of accents. And generally, she was excellent. She wore mostly plain, outdoorsy clothing (except for that scene in which she was bare-naked), and her hair was in a plain brown bob, but damn, did her face and eyes look luminous. She was as striking as the landscape itself.

The dress here? Pretty good. Face and hair, lovely.

        • veriance

I enjoyed Top of the Lake. The part was written for Anna Paquin, but EM did beautifully in the part.

        • ItsDicey

Should’ve read the comments before I posted about Top of the Lake. While not an easy watch, I thought it was different than anything I’d seen before. Disturbing? Yes.

  • Diego!

She looks like Lady Di!!!! :O And she looks amazing!

  • snarkykitten

The dress is okay, except for the back. The way those shoulder straps fall limp like that makes it look like a wardrobe malfunction

    • TheDivineMissAnn

This^^ I loved it until I saw the back with that weird sleeves action going on. Now I just like it.

But she looks absolutely fabulous! I love the blond hair on her.

  • Jessica Freeman

I really do love that hair cut and color on her. Burn that dress, girl.

    • 3boysful

Jessica, you and I are sympatico today.

      • Jessica Freeman

        Bitter Kittens Unite!

    • Rhonda Shore

Thank you! The dress is really awful, like some sort of junior high home economics project where the teenager had no more allowance to buy fabric to fix the mistakes or somefink. and wrong shoes. Do like the hair though.

  • Spreecord

I have to say I was a huge fan of the layered brown bob, although the blonde pixie is adorable on her. I just can’t with the dress, though. It looks draughty in an unpleasant way.

  • Meg0GayGuys6

I absolutely LOVE this! She looks fantastic and she knows it!

  • mjude

i dont get the back of the dress. but she does look adorable from the front.

  • jen_vasm

Great hair, but it looks like she was in a barfight & won.

    • Beautiful. We’re jealous a little.

      • jen_vasm

        This. Made. My. Day.

    • Alanna

  • MoHub

Rather than scrolldown fug, this was turnaround fug. The front is so cute, but the back is horrific.

  • Damien W

You’re so right about how the hair brings out her featuires. All of a sudden, I’m seeing classic heyday Joan Crawford in those eyes and lips! She’s a cutie.

The dress..it’s nice. It looks like a dress someone might have made for a Project Runway challenge…but at least one that might have won.

    • I thought PR, too, but not in a good way. I can hear Tim saying, “Edit, edit, edit.”

  • MarieLD

    Wow. She looks great.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

I feel like I should hate this, but her smile and that hair are enough to make me like it.

  • Ekw

    LOVE the hair!

  • Heather

Is she wearing… a leather harness underneath? No judgement, just wondering.

    Cute haircut. Terrible shoes.

  • I feel like this is Lena Dunham’s ideal dress.

  • Snailstsichr

Well, her shoes look better than the ones on the model – at first I thought she was wearing athletic socks.

Cute hair and Jennifer nailed it with the bar fight comment about the dress.

  • Nancer

I just can’t with this dress. Can not. At all.

  • marlie

SHE looks great, but I really hate this dress. It’s like scraps of fabric and leather were tooled together to make something that bears a vague resemblance to a dress.

  • MilaXX

I like everything but the shoe

  • Tatiana Luján

I don’t really dislike the shape of the dress, but I hate that floral print.
If the dress were all black I would really like it.
    Her head looks awsome.
The shoes are too 80s and I don’t like them one bit.

  • For the girl who wants to appear to have narrowly escaped an assault, with style.

  • Alyssa Caruso Ivins

love the blond pixie cut on her! looks especially hot from the back. go peg!

  • SewingSiren

    Sexy hot.

  • crash1212

I love everything about this look. Sassy!

  • Hate the strap on that shoe! Wrong, wrong, wrong. Otherwise, I like this.

    • 3boysful

Agree re the shoe. That orange line at the ankle truncates her legs.

      • Angela_the_Librarian

Just had to applaud your use of truncate. I’m working on a database presentation now and just finished my slide on truncation!

      • TheAmericaness

I’m getting tired of that look with shoes. If I see another pair like that that make it look you have cartoon legs and feet that happen to be free floating around under you… gah! i’ll do something like write another nasty comment. 😀

      • MilaXX

And the color is too minor a player in the dress. Repeating it in the shoe makes it too focus pulling

      • The ankle straps look like the wristbands you get at an outdoor music festival.

  • l_c_ann

The phrase “Aged 25 years” so often repeated in back of her refers to the dresses and this is all that’s left of them after 25 years.

(Although Sharon Stone, Jane Fonda and a few others wouldn’t be caught dead in front of that backdrop.)

  • mhleta

I’m loving this hair!! I wish she’d worn the shoes with the black dress waiting to be born from this absurd flowered pillow case of a dress. Whatever. She’s working it and I love her more for it.

  • Kristobel

LOVE her hair. Hate everything else.

  • majorbedhead

It’s like my mother’s Portmeirion dishes got drunk and wound up in an underground dominatrix club.

  • elemspbee

Is it me or does her head look enormous on top of the rest of her body?
and this dress is a mess. Looks amess on her and the model.

  • When did dresses get all weird?

  • Qitkat

S’allrite. I liked her hair mussy the way it was a week or so ago on one of the Jimmy’s.

  • barbarienne

I never thought that Elisabeth Moss was even the tiniest bit pretty…until now. WOW, what a difference a hairstyle and color make. She’s like the ugly-duckling-turned-swan girl at the end of a teen movie.

  • Cheree Low

This is he best she’s ever looked. The haircut gives her a neck.

  • lamamu

I can’t get over the runway model/version: the model looks like she was on the losing end of an Easter brunch brawl. Maybe E Moss was the winner?

  • Do not like the top of the dress but it does make her waist look tiny.

  • I actually like this dress on Elisabeth but not on the model. Except for the unfortunate shoe choice, I think it’s needs something open and airy, like a sandal, this is the best she’s ever looked. Love, love, love the hair. She looks confident in this and that maybe what makes it work for me.

  • Erica_Vuitton

For some reason the dress is ruined for me by how it’s slipping off her shoulder it’s like it’s too big and too small at the same time. And even though I love a celeb that slums at Aldo for shoes these were better off left on the shelf. U-G-L-Y

  • Oh, how I hate this dress. She looks pretty, though.

  • Rand Ortega

The bestest, hottest she’s ever looked. FULL. STOP.

  • frannyprof

The black strap on the left shoulder is distracting… I keep thinking it should end in a purse. Not a fan of this look. But love her and her hair.

  • judybrowni

I agree with TLo on all four points.

  • unbornfawn

I like the hair too. The dress looks great from the front, just wish the flower straps in the back weren’t so droopy. I really hate these shoes with the outfit.

  • cowper

Don’t like the dress, but love seeing Elizabeth Moss get punked up. Why the hell not?

  • That dress is ridunculous. Love her hair though!

  • Glammie

You guys are so right about the shoes.

Love the dress, like the hair and this is pretty good for Moss. But, somehow, it doesn’t quite gel. She’s got a great figure, but she can’t quite pull off the dress and I’m not sure why. Just a tiny bit too much going on for her. The right shoe would have helped along with some good highlights and lowlights for her hair, but she’s almost there.

  • meowing

I’ll be a little of a naysayer here. Love the hairstyle, but don’t think the color is spot on. Maybe a little more strawberry in it would work better for her coloring? As another kitten cursed with super-fine hair (fur?), I ‘get’ the problem with a good cut and styling, so I feel oodles for her. Great smile, and she looks great in that oddly done dress.

  • Anniebet

This may be the first time ever that I’ve looked at a pic of this woman and didn’t think “what’s wrong here?”. Love the hair, it flatters her face nicely. And strangely, I do adore the dress – it’s cute, flirty, fun. Shoes are meh.

  • kimiakay

Wow do I love that hair on her. Go Lizzy. Wish she could keep it for the show, but it wouldn’t work, I guess. Love the dress, and I think I see why she may have chosen those shoes, but the black overpowers everything. But she otherwise looks really good here.

  • gracedarling

The hair is good, but I think she’s most suited to a Gillian Anderson red, or a light auburn – I know Joanie’s got dibs on red for a while, but it would really bring out the warmth in her complexion.

  • E. D.

    I like this. A lot.

  • Louise Bryan

Love the hair. Dress is interesting from the front, and fug from the back.

  • demidaemon

Beyond the stated problems, this dress also makes her look very broad in the shoulders. It has a bit of a drag queen effect, in my opinion, and not the good kind.

  • ItsDicey

Did anyone see her in the Kiwi miniseries Top Of The Lake on Netflix? I thought her performance, though understated, was quite good. And from what I could tell she did a pretty good job with the accent. It also made me aware of what a bangin’ bod she has.

  • That dress is having an identity crisis.

  • Sweetvegan

“Different is nice, but it sure isn’t pretty…” – Chorus Line and The Dutchess

  • Crystal

She looks beautiful but the dress is weird.

  • Sarah Souffriau

Wow, how skinny is she? She’s rocking that hair though.

  • MoreShoes

The front side of the dress I really like. The back side, not so much. She looks cute, if you forget about the shoes.

  • The Lady

I LOVELOVE that dress on her! Great shoes, though not with that outfit. Super cute hair, too.

  • PeaceBang

Everything below the neck is absolutely atrocious. The dress concept might have worked if not in a Holly Hobbie floral, and the ankle straps on those shoes look like neon mosquito repellent bracelets. Hiddy.

  • Sawa

This dress is genius — it’s got a sense of humor about it that I wish there was more of in fashion. The whole IDEA of it is ‘good girl on the outside/ bad girl on the inside’. The virginal laura-ashley pattern designed to delicately slip off the shoulder, and literally “peel off” to expose the fierce S&M leather underneath. It’s not a Frankendress – it’s a Madonna/Whore dress! Tongue-in-cheek but still pretty. I wish T&M would praise this kind of novelty instead of judging a look solely on how conventionally attractive it makes a woman appear. C’mon — fashion is supposed to be fun.
