Diane Kruger in Prabal Gurung

Posted on May 14, 2013

Girl, you crazy.

Diane Kruger attends Vogue and MAC Cosmetics dinner hosted by Lisa Love and John Demsey in honor of Prabal Gurung at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles.

Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Tilda Lindstam

We’re not gonna feature many pics from this event, because it was fairly boring from a style perspective, but suffice it to say, Miss Diane chose to STAND OUT. The rest of the ladies were very ladies-who-lunch. For some reason, Diane chose to go with ladies-who-skip-lunch-to-go-to-the-gym.

We don’t hate the pants. They’re pretty, actually. And we think they can be styled in a bunch of fun, chic ways. We question whether Diane is actually tall enough to pull them off, though. And man, was that half top a miscalculation. Not just because half-tops at chic cocktail parties are pretty damn tacky, but because a half-top paired with balloony clown pants instantly looks like workout gear. How could she not see that? Or was the thinking here along the lines of “It looks like workout gear – but chic!” Well, no, dear. It doesn’t.

If she had styled her hair and makeup in a more polished way it sure would have helped.

    • http://twitter.com/Lily1129 Lily

I actually…like this? It’s cute and fun and suits her.

      • http://twitter.com/Sumaphelia Sumaphelia

I agree. Not my personal taste, but it works on her somehow.

      • VioletFem

I don’t hate it either, but for the venue this seems like a miss.

        • Call me Bee

Agreed. She doesn’t look awful, but for a luncheon this seems tacky.

      • lamamu

She keeps it interesting. And I like that she wore this to a stuffy luncheon. La Kruger won’t be tamed!

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

A whole world of 1980s music videos just flashed before my eyes.

      • werika

I was born in the late 80s, so didn’t get to see much of that era’s fashion hideousness but thanks to these lady stars, sartorial history lessons are a TLo click away!

        • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

This is a good demonstration. Although we did wear our pants on our natural waist, not below, and mine were made of cotton not satin.

          • werika

Do you miss that era’s comfort over fashion zeitgeist?

            • Mistie Holler

I was born in the early eighties. And I certainly don’t miss seeing my mother in a mint green, spiral-patterned boiler suit. Or her perm.

            • Mistie Holler

To be fair, I was guilty of the crimped side-ponytail. But I was too young to know better.

      • kmk05

The cropped tops in Kylie Minogue’s 198- everything, but specifically the Loco-motion. Which I am now listening to because if Diane Kruger’s fashion sense.

      • gabbilevy

I am officially over this recent return to the midriff.

      • Little_Olive

I was gonna say… borrowed from Paula Abdul/Janet Jackson/ MC Hammer

        • maggiemaybe

UGH! That’s it! They’re MC Hammer pants. So ugly they’re making my eyes bleed.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Just a simple, regular, tank would have been so good. Sigh. My adoration of Pacey’s girl is well documented, but I has much disappoint over this one.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

I like the shirt the model is wearing paired with those pants.

    • nannypoo

I’m happy to see all these big-ass pants. There’s hope for those of us who need the extra room.

    • http://twitter.com/hugandpint Courtenay P

If I had those abs, I would parade them around too. Can’t hate.

    • MilaXX

She looks like an extra in the Olivia Newton-John Physical video

      • Nicholas

… in a totally awesome way.

      • sunnycalif

I thought she was going to play volleyball–just the way she is holding the clutch.

      • demidaemon

I thought all the extras in that video were hot mens.

    • Tatiana Luján

      I hate the top.

    • fungstyle

I’m am blinded by my irrational love for the krueger.

    • mmc2315

I blame it all on Prabal Gurung. I almost always dislike Prabal Gurung. And, Proenza Schouler.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Smith/12431153 Emily Smith

But…but I kinda like it. Cause it’s a little cray but it’s like good fun cray? Like she damn well knows it’s silly looking but she loots hot anyway so kiss her flat abs and incredibly toned ass?

    • aeb1986

seems like she decided to go by the mantra, “if you got it, flaunt it”. but pretty sure that doesn’t apply to this event. i do really like those pants though

    • kayleymaybe

She’s 36 years old and dresses more youthful than many of the 20-somethings on this site. I’d rather see that than the boring old starlets any day!

    • Jessica RoweRock

We should all sing together: Let’s get physical. Physical. We’re gonna get physicallll….

      • Donna Tabor

        Thanks for the laugh.

Less thanks for the earworm. :-)

    • filmcricket

Oh my God, that is the least flattering outfit I’ve seen in some time. What kind of dark magic makes La Krueger look like that?

    • ashtangajunkie

I love the pants, want the pants. I think I would love this entire look if the top and the pants were better acquainted with one another.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Monzerrat-Ontiveros/100000216133922 Monzerrat Ontiveros

also, shes is old for this kind of style… let this to miley or vanessa…

    • carnush

I still love it. Maybe not appropriate for a dinner, though.

    • SugarSnap108

If that top covered her midriff, I’d like this a lot. It would be like funk-ifying a ladies-who-lunch flowered dress, while keeping it classy. But I’d still have a problem with her hair and lip color.

    • imspinningaround

It works. Like T.I. said, “it ain’t trickin’ if you got it.”

    • 3boysful

TO me, the look on her face says someone made her don this getup, and she ain’t too pleased about it. Cheer up, Di–you’re probably getting lots of free stuff that’s cuter than what you’re forced to wear for a few hours. And see derided all over the internet.

    • kmk05

I don’t think anything can help that top with those pants. If she had gone for a messy bun? Gym hair. A tight bun? Gym hair after the pool. A sleek ponytail? Magazine gym people.

On the other hand, maybe a totally mat face would have made a slight difference.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I certainly don’t think the clothing choices can really be saved, not for this venue, in any case. But a smooth French twist might have skewed a bit away from Workoutlandia.

        • kmk05

But the propensity today for ‘loose curls’ and ‘artfully messy’ make me think you’d need a really skilled hairdresser/stylist that would spot that. On the other hand, she usually has really good people working with her so … maybe?

She definitely missed the mark here though. It’s like a bad R&B/hip-hop outfit too: the proportions of the top aren’t even really flattering.

    • Patricia Gillett

Great abs or not, this is tacky. Even when prom dresses went through that midriff phase a few years back, they covered more belly than this! There is no reason for a woman with her style resources to be tackier than an teen in a two piece prom dress,

    • http://www.facebook.com/ann.verwiebe Ann VerWiebe

      I think I wore something like that to a party… in 1989.

    • Janet B

Fun pants, but the rest is sad.

    • http://www.facebook.com/bert.keeter Bert Keeter

      “Married with Children” fashion?

      • http://twitter.com/GuidosDaddy Jason M. Galloway

        Love it! Kelly Bundy realness!

    • thecitysleeps

Not appropriate for the event, I’m sure but she looks hot as fuck and I love it.

    • SewingSiren

She should have accessorized with terry cloth scuffs and a big bowl of popcorn then she’d be ready for movie night on the living room couch.

    • http://twitter.com/Glam_Dixie Glam Dixie

Girl, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

      • Mistie Holler

Could you forward that to Halle Berry?

    • BrooklynBomber

I’m not buying this expensive mall rat attire. Who is she, anyway? Her wardrobe is all over the place and I get no sense of who she is. Some people express different facets of their personality through their attire (Chloe Sevigny being the extreme example). This one ends up a cipher.

      • mmc2315

        Right? I totally agree!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

The pants could have worked if she would have gone a bit classier up top. I cannot take anyone in a belly shirt seriously.

    • TheLaurenJean

… I actually love it? Don’t kick me out! But it reminds me of all the outfits I wanted to wear when I was a little girl that went out of style before I was old enough to wear them.

    • crash1212

I dunno…I like her deployment of clown pants better than the models. Although, belly shirts and a dinner is a bit tacky. Pretty hair and make-up.

    • Anniebet

Her face and hair are pretty danged gorgeous, but this was one of those scroll down don’ts. However, this event *was* in honor of Prabal Gurung. Maybe he wanted her to wear this. ;)

    • Call me Bee

How about “ladies who skip lunch to go stand on the streetcorner?”

    • Shannon Long

I love it, but she really can do no wrong in my book. She always takes risks and I respect that (although perhaps this outfit would have been better for a different event).

    • decormaven

This has a Tiffany or Debbie Gibson vibe.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

This reinforces my comment in a previous post that she really shines in the “on the street” photos, but is way off the mark more often than not when she’s trying too hard on the red carpet.

    • J. Preposterice

this is one of those things where I look at it and go “sleek pony, classic white button-down, BANG”. sigh.

    • Sadie-Ann

I really want her to break out into some sort of 80′s dance montage.

    • AmeliaEve

Did she arrive at the event by windsurfing?

    • http://www.facebook.com/conysoledad Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

I don’t hate this… but with a different top, a clutch that matches the outfit and a better hairstyle would have been a winner.

    • Tracy_Flick

She’s pulling this off to a surprising extent, considering that it’s hammer pants and a crop top. But even SHE can’t get it all the way there. And it’s a DINNER – is she planning to just nibble on some lettuce? Girl, get your eating clothes on.

    • RedRaven617

uhm… it was hosted by VOGUE Magazine!!! Wrong, wrong, wrong.

      • demidaemon

So was the Met Ball ;).

    • ThaliaMenninger

      Hammertime! Can’t touch that!

    • msdamselfly

      Ready for volleyball!

    • http://www.facebook.com/vlasta.bubinka Vlasta Bubinka

She looks like she was styled by Luann Platter on King of the Hill– bra top and palazzo pants. These aren’t mango colored, but still.

    • kittenwithaquip

All I can hear in my head is, “Please Hammer don’t ‘em!” Stop! Lunchtime!

    • Qitkat

You just know she saw what Ri-Ri wore to dinner the other day, and thought ooh, belly buttons! That’s the look I want.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Wow! An awful look, and it makes her look half of her normally statuesque height. Just bad all around.

    • LaSylphide

Actually, I like the top the model is wearing. If Kruger had worn that with skinny black pants and killer boots, it might have been a better look, although agree it’s probably not right for a dinner.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=535548244 Kim Baker Vidas Davey-Irvin

      i can’t hate. she’s great.

    • blueberrypanckae

      1998 realness…

    • http://twitter.com/RaankyRaank Raanky

I love Diane Kruger and normally she can do no wrong, but girl looks a hot mess here!

    • formerlyAnon

Well, back in my day the Chateau Marmont was rock ‘n roll, and in a workout video-adjacent way, she might be construed as such. (Not that I ever saw it in what I loosely call “my day,” or L.A. at all until a few years ago, being too much of a San Francisco/Northern California fan on my few visits.)

    • kimiakay

This look is like she’s daring us: “I can wear anything I want, anywhere I want. So what if my hair is scraggly, and my pants are clown pants and you can see half my stomach. I am Diane Kruger, it’s still Prabal Gurung, and I am beautiful anyway.”

    • ankali

She is too short for these pants to work, if in fact they can be worked, on which proposition I am not sold. For me everything south of the neck is wrong, wrong, wrong, which is really rare for her.

    • quiltrx

I just can’t with this one. To my mind, she always dresses with “all attention is good attention” in mind. And she gets a lot of bad attention for what she wears.

    • http://twitter.com/DuBey2 Marie Fessler

I just read in (either Elle or InStyle) that she does not use a stylist and according to them, doesn’t need one. I hereby beg to differ.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001998855370 Fatima Siddique

Am I crazy? I think this works on her. Obviously the wrong venue for it, but I think it’s interesting and pretty.

      • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

I think it is the right venue, as they were also celebrating Prabal Gurung.

    • guest2visits

Somehow she took this straight back to 80s tacky. If she kicked off the shoes and put down the clutch she and 4 other girls could finish shooting that aerobics-video. It’s like she dressed herself with stuff laying around on the floor again.

    • mhleta

And after the party it’s…”Five, six, seven, eight! And kick, and squat, and kick, and squat. Higher, Ladies. HIGHER!”

    • Mylynka

This is Kendra from her The Girls Next Door days.
