Cover Girl: Zoe Saldana for InStyle UK

Posted on May 02, 2013

WERQ it, Uhura! Getting-a-lock-on-a-signal snaps, gurl! We’re adjusting our earpieces and rolling our necks in RESPECT.

Zoe Saldana covers the June 2013 issue of InStyle UK magazine photographed by Damon Heath in a Christian Dior dress.

Best picture of her we’ve seen in a while. Love that dress on her.

Inside, Zoe says, “Fuck all this vapid interview shit. I’ma throw a bomb here.”

On aging in Hollywood: “I’ve been told by producers, ‘Well, you know we need to get on this because you’re not getting any younger…’ Women are reminded of their age all the time. It’s usually by a fricking fat, big-bellied old man with a comb-over and you look at him and you’re like, ‘Really? Give me a break. You just have more money and more power in this situation than I do, but not in my life.’ I’m tired of watching these 50-year-old actors with these 23-year-old actresses and they’re soul mates in the movie. What? [in real life] a 23-year-old would look at a 50-year-old and go, ‘Are you kidding me?!’”

Why do we picture her publicist in the background, frantically waving her hands and doing cutting motions across her neck? Gotta love her for saying all that, but we can’t imagine that’s not gonna bite her in the ass at some point. Just ask Katherine Heigl, Zoe.

Christian Dior Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Marine Deleeuw (ELITE)

Givenchy Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Saara Sihvonen (SILENT)

Louis Vuitton Spring 2013 Collection/Models: Kel Markey (WOMEN) and Agnes Nabuurs (VIVA)

Fabulous and throwing bombs. What the fuck is not to love here?

That Louis Vuitton looks so much better on her than on the model. It’s one of those dresses that really does look so much better when the wearer has a skin tone like Zoe’s.

      • http://twitter.com/RaankyRaank Raanky

        That LV dress was phenom.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Luv Huh! And girl sure can wear clothes. I love me some Marc Jacobs, but can the LV collection please go away now? No more checked LV frocks!!!!!

      • zenobar

Hear HEAR. Unfortunately, that look that hit the saturation point for me about a month ago.

      • http://www.linkedin.com/pub/anne-mccandless/1a/238/38a Anne

IT’s kind of a shame, really. The first few times I saw it on people (Kristen Stewart and Fan Bing Bing stand out in my mind) I was like, wow, this looks really great on the runway – because I was not a fan on the runway. But unfortunately, it’s such a memorable print that it does end up growing stale. I wonder if in 20 years, starlets will haul it out and then it will be “Kiernan Shipka in vintage Louis Vuitton.”

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I can see that in my mind’s eye very clearly. The word “iconic” will come into play

    • TDSE

She is perfect. All of those dresses look better on her than the models.

    • suzanne77

On the model that first dress looks chip, in a chip way, no? But on Ms. Saldana it just SINGS!!!! Respect, Ms. Lady, RESPECT!

      • sk8tfan

Yes! Not only does it look chip, it looks like the model hiked it up to take a pee.

        • suzanne77

Thank you for getting the reference. After I posted I was like, um, Catherine Malandrino superfans only I guess. :)

          • sk8tfan

I just wish I was clever enough to have thought it up myself!

            • suzanne77

Hahaha! Next time! There’s always a next time!

    • http://www.facebook.com/NJPag Nicholas Jude Paganelli

I’m so glad the Dior is in a different textile. The original looks like saran wrap to me.

      • Lori

I was thinking mylar gift wrap, but yeah, the cover fabric is better.

      • RinPauler

The original Dior was supposed to give you the under-water effect, and it actually looks like that in motion.

    • Jessi03

Yes, MA’AM! I actually just cited an article yesterday about how ridiculous it is that she hardly has any magazine covers. She’s a famous, talented actress who can actually model. Get the woman a cover! And they did. Go Zoe.

      • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

You’re right, but I just noticed this is InStyle UK.

        • Jessi03

          You’re right. Womp.

    • SewingSiren

Should’a put the checks on the cover.

      • capybara_cafe

Agreed, she looks AMAZING in that one.

    • crash1212

I am not getting tired of that Vuitton collection. I simply love it and she looks divine. Throw those bombs sweetie – although, I had a really hot affair in my early 20’s with a 50 year old – he was hot and I don’t regret one minute of it!

    • M_E_S

      FAAAAAAAAAAAABULOUS.

But quick question- isn’t it UhurA? *ducks*

      • YoungSally

        Good catch!

    • VioletFem

I already liked her, but now I LUV her for that awesome quote. Also, what Zoe said and what K. Heigl said are worlds apart. Although I do hope this quote doesn’t bite her in the ass.

    • http://twitter.com/kerryev kerryev

Ehh, publicists are paid to overreact. She is 100% right.

      • formerlyAnon

Of COURSE she’s right. But in this situation, the publicist is paid to faint or fake a heart attack or throw up on somebody’s priceless artwork. Because their whole point in life is to save public figures from being themselves in a chatty mood.

(Oh, o.k. Maybe a *tiny* bit of hyperbole, there. But only because I
think it’s some kind of offense to call 911 for an ambulance under false
        pretenses.)

        • http://twitter.com/OutRgdFshonista Katherine

i wanna see them chatty & themselves… tired of all the PC correctness. and yeah, i don’t get the 20+ girl with the old fat guy either… i was SOOOOOO not paying attention to anyone older when i was that age. i just thought “Gross!!”.

    • http://www.facebook.com/AdriannaGrezak Adrianna Grężak

She looks great, but I can’t get past the same bad, strained-looking expression in every photograph

    • Sarah

She can get away with saying that, I’m pretty sure. Katherine Heigl couldn’t have, because she hasn’t nearly as much charisma. Zoe’s a badass, so her statement (which – TRUE DAT GIRL) is not going to go over as badly. And I think she looks good in everything.

      • Sobaika

Also, Heigl went around pissing off basically everyone at the same time.

        • Rand Ortega

& KH did it w/out 2 BILLION dollar franchises & 1 of the most powerful agents to give her cred. It’s not all about having $ & power in the HWood– It’s how you wield it.

    • PinkySlinky

Crushing it in the Louis Vuitton- she needs more editorials

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Love the quotes, and the fresh face. But it seems she has the same angled-head-pose for every shot.

      • http://www.facebook.com/beautifulmonday Laura V Rizzo

        yes that bothers me too.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

My girlcrush on her has deepened. Plus, she looks gorgeous.

    • MilaXX

Fabulous! Love them all. Katherine Heigel wishes her biggest problem was saying something this bold.

      • flamingoNW

Yeah, I think Heigl has other problems….

    • BuffaloBarbara

There is nothing not to love. PREACH IT, Zoe.

    • Qitkat

Is her tattoo in Arabic or Farsi or ???
I’m just wondering. There’s always a story behind a tattoo.
She is a beautiful woman. And good for her for speaking her mind so bluntly.

      • Sobaika

It looks like Arabic, sloppy script at that. But I can’t see the whole thing, could be Farsi, Urdu, etc.

        • fursa_saida

I thiiiiink the first word might be a messy t7ibni (تحبني), or “You love me.” I can’t make out what comes after, and I’m wondering if it was supposed to be “Love me” and somebody screwed up? Wouldn’t be the first time with Arabic tattoos. Apparently she also has one on her foot that says “I want to ask her”; I couldn’t read the first word, but the second was almost definitely أسألها, “I ask her,” which would be correct.

    • Kenisha Hill Phillips

      Love. Her. Full stop.

    • RinPauler

“What? [in real life] a 23-year-old would look at a 50-year-old and go, ‘Are you kidding me?!” —-> QUOTED FOR TRUTH. Well, most of the times anyway.

      • http://onionjam.tumblr.com SkipperJane

The most recent vexing paring is Liam Neeson (61) and Olivia Wilde (29) for an upcoming film. That isn’t just getting into “ew” territory, it’s set up permanent residence there.

        • tereliz

Just want to throw out there that this is the same age difference between me and my dad (except we’re 4 years older). Ew.

    • lamamu

      LOVE this editorial.

On a side note: exactly what was the age difference between Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook? Just sayin’.

      • Sobaika

About 15 years, I think. They tried to have her play a bit older, but I don’t think it was totally successful. Hollywood is filled with this sort of thing.

        • BarniClaw

Totally. I still liked the movie, but it would have been so much more interesting if her part was played as it was written in the book: by someone older than him.

          • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

Thanks for that. For many reasons, I wasn’t keen on seeing this film, and I think you’ve hit on what I thought was odd: her character seemed too young.

            • Amelia

Yeah, it was a bit difficult to imagine a 22 year old widow who had been married for three years. I know some people do get married really young, but it was distracting, more distracting than the age difference was (to me).

    • mjude

      thank you miss z.

    • Donna Tabor

But she’s dead-on. Male fantasies get worked over pretty good in Hollywood.

    • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

With all due respect, those bastards would be lucky to bite her ass. Love her in the Givenchy.

      • Rand Ortega

        Not to mention blissfully happy.

    • zenobar

I always thought she was interesting – but after reading that quote, I fucking love this woman.

    • carnush

Love her. She looks fierce. I have a feeling she will age very, very gracefully.

    • Squarah

Ehhh….she’s giving some weird, bass fish kinda face in these pics. NAGL.

    • Imasewsure

Not sure what KH said but I think her lousy, charmless Rom Coms did her in anyway.. and Ms Z looks amazing

      • Celandine1

Exactly, because box office success in Hollywood wipes out a multitude of sins.

    • Rand Ortega

If anyone is going to achieve what Dorothy Dandridge, Tamara Dobson, Diahann Carroll, Halle Barry et al couldn’t– the action/drama/Rom Com leading actress of color, it’s Zoe Saldana. She’s the complete package. Beauty, brains, talent that women & men relate & admire. I may not be on board w/ her playing La Simone, but I root for her success. It’s not her fault the game is played so unfairly. I hope it gives her & those like her the opportunity to broaden the horizons of the roles women of color can play therefore makes the playing field more fair.
      1 more thing:
JESUS PALOMINO! IS SHE SMOKIN’ OR WHAT?!

      • Sobaika

Agreed. The Simone biopic and her reaction made my adoration come to a screeching halt (not here for that, I don’t care who’s involved in it) but she has the potential – and access – that few others in her position have.

    • http://twitter.com/omg_dora Dora K.

One thing in favor of Katherine Heigl — she never looked as if she was starving herself this badly.

    • dorothea_brooke

Love love love the quote. Like like like the pictures.

And yes re Katherine Heigl. Is the the most talented, charismatic actress going? No. But that doesn’t mean she was wrong about that stupid movie. Is Sean Penn blacklisted for being a pain in the behind? The rules are different if you don’t have a dick in Hollywood.

      • Rand Ortega

Or 1 that’s the ‘right’ color.

    • nannypoo

I love the Givenchy and and the Vuitton, the other one not so much. The Givenchy model’s shoes make me sad. I almost always hate that pulled-back hair but on Zoe it looks great. She has just the right face for it.

    • Little_Olive

She bores me unendlessly, but I gotta admit she is outwearing the models in every piece (although the one in the middle makes no sense to me).

    • Nonmercisansfacon

She looks great! Funny how she can be so frank and perceptive about sexism issues in Hollywood but totally tone-deaf about others, say the whole Nina Simone colorism debacle and other issues regarding race.

    • kimmeister

I missed it … What did Katherine Heigl say?

    • QuincyTKatz

Hmmm, she’s not getting a dinner invite from the Zeta-Jones Douglas’s anytime soon!

      • HengRu

        Or the Chapman-Weinsteins!

    • Pants_are_a_must

And I just started REALLY loving her for saying that. I always liked her, but now I LAAAAAAAHV her.

    • formerlyAnon

      Girl can WEAR CLOTHES!

This is completely unfounded, but: I suspect she’s got a good business brain – or at least, the common sense to hire good business brains. Why? I dunno, she just sounds like that to me when I read her interviews – and there haven’t been a lot, and I *said* this was unfounded. And so I bet she’s gonna be ready to do more than the the average good looking 45 year old actress when her time comes.

In the meantime, I do love the occasional weak moment in which an actor lets slip the guard on their tongue! (And it’s not about their personal life and cosmic philosophy. Shirley Maclaine excepted.)

    • http://twitter.com/RaankyRaank Raanky

Gurl is WERKing the shit out of that whole cover. Brava.

    • http://onionjam.tumblr.com SkipperJane

I wonder if Zoe has been reading New York Magazine – they really spell out the age differences issue – complete with scatter-point graphs!

      http://www.vulture.com/2013/04/leading-men-age-but-their-love-interests-dont.html

    • guest2visits

That is what I say to every other movie.. why do they constantly pair- up a 50 to 60 something with the latest ingenue? It doesn’t feel right all through the film. Anyway; still not tired of that LV – she looks fantastic in it, too.
I like the cover from the waist up, the skirt is a bore. And the 2nd look is saved by Zoe’s good looks; the clothes are nothing.

    • CakesOnAPlane

Why is she so insistent on us seeing up her nose?

      • Erica_Vuitton

        HA love this. so true.

    • H2olovngrl

She , Katherine Heigl, Rosie O’Donnell, Kathy Griffin, and a few other women not afraid to speak their minds need to say fuck you to the hoary old establishment and start their own production company.

    • elemspbee

if it does bite her in the ass, with the movie-making assbiters, she can always model. she’s a better. clothes wearer than she is an actress.
      what? i’m just saying.

    • padma sallah

Appropriate response is appropriate. And she is working the shit out of the Christian Dior dress on the cover.

    • http://twitter.com/AnniNoone AnniNoone

I dunno, guys. Katherine Heigl was just a bitch, not a teller of truths. I hope Zoe shakes things up.

    • jetpackdino

Like the pics, LOVE the interview. Brave, smart, honest. Funny how you can’t see her balls in any of those short dresses…

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

My take: she’s fucking Uhura now, icons say what they want. Nichelle often did, too.

    • kathrineb

Every look/photo =GORGEOUS! Also I sort of love her for that honest comment.

    • http://twitter.com/JaniceMSmith joy peace

I don’t like that she covered up the top of the dress on the cover. Its the prettiest part! Zoe is a pretty girl but I don’t like this spread.

    • librarygrrl64

Like a BOSS, Zoe! Good for you!
