Carrie Underwood for Marie Claire

Carrie Underwood tries her best for Marie Claire.

Carrie Underwood covers the June 2013 issue of Marie Claire magazine in a Michael Kors dress photographed by Regan Cameron.

Lengths she’ll go to for good TV: “We have The Walking Dead nights on the tour bus. At one point in Pittsburgh we didn’t get satellite reception, so we asked the driver if he could drive us around for an hour. I’m a fan. I’m just waiting for the offer. I could be a zombie.”

Favorite singers: “George Michael. Even as a 3-year-old I could pick his voice out of a million. I liked Queen growing up because [Freddie Mercury] could do things I couldn’t do. Aerosmith, same thing. Martina McBride hit a lot of awesome, high, long notes. I’d make myself do them. She taught me how to sing, in a way.”

Things she’s bad at: “I’m probably not great at talking or understanding emotional things. I’ll totally listen. But I won’t have a lot of advice to give. I’m bad at calling to check in, the long conversation. But in the ways that really matter, I’m there. I would donate a kidney. The people they hate, I hate.”

Burberry Prorsum Swimsuit

Giambattista Valli Top and Skirt

Michael Kors Dress

She’s pretty and she definitely looks good in clothes, but bless her heart, the girl has no in-front-of-a-lens charisma. Besides, we question some of these choices. She looks great in the Giambattista Valli pieces, but that Burberry swimsuit shot is cringe-worthy.

Poor thing has too long of a torso to pull off that swimsuit, no?

    • siriuslover

I just hate that stupid pose they make models (and celebrities turned models) do with their hands / shoulders. Even Barbie can’t make that pose.

      • AnaRoW

That’s the women’s magazine pose Tyra showed in an earlier season of Top Model. It’s sort of the inverse of the men’s magazine pose with the chest and butt stuck out. I don’t know why, but they’re apparently industry-standard poses.

Now I’m wondering if they’ll come out with a scoliosis Barbie just to prove you wrong.

  • Coolekat

Disagree with you a bit on the charisma.

    • decormaven

“Cynthia says he’s got charisma. I looked it up, and he does.” Carrie Underwood, not so much.

  • abish

i think the problem with the swimsuit shot is less the swimsuit and more that it reeks of model 101.

    • twocee

Yeah, I feel like I’m looking at an ANTP judging picture with that one. I can hear Tyra telling her she’s just not smizing enough.

  • MilaXX

She just seem blah. Like hanging with her would be the most boring thing ever.

    • Lori

I’m not sure why, but I’ve always suspected she could be entertaining f you took her out of her usual element and got a few drinks in her. I think she might be sort of bitchy in a fun way when she lets herself be. All those songs about doing serious damage to people her tick her off have to come from somewhere, right?

      • Qitkat

And along with the rest of the world we did find out, didn’t we, just how *entertaining* she is. Bless her heart. I’ve always kind of liked her, so I hope this was just a blip.

That Kors dress is the perfect color for her, especially now that she’s back to blonde.

        • Lori

A magazine photo spread “interview”, during which she was presumably more or less sober isn’t really what I had in mind. I was thinking more “no cameras within a 5 mile radius and a whole lotta tequila”.

          • Qitkat

This must be my turn to be the *village idiot* day. Second person I’ve thought was someone else in one day. I was thinking this was Reese. My bad.

        • sekushinonyanko

I laughed out loud when I read that. They do look alot alike, to be fair.

        • lovelyivy

It’s not you, Carrie Underwood is just really bland. I laughed!

      • RebeccaKW

She did a special on tv awhile back, not quite a variety show, but singing skits and things. With Christina Applegate and Kristen Chenoweth. It was pretty funny.

    • drdarke

She does seem kind of meh, doesn’t she, @MilaXX:disqus ? She’s pretty enough, I guess – but she sets of a Republican Stepford Daughter vibe….

  • Sophia Vaccaro

I don’t want to be that douche who is actually commenting on her body, but I always kinda felt bad for her having to lose weight as fast as she did for whatever reason she did it… I think she looked great then too.

  • hughman

This is what that $600 “Modeling School” fee gets you.

    • Qitkat

Lol. I came so close to doing that once, for an over-forty model search. Thank all the fashion powers that be I was not chosen.

  • charlotte

Why did I read “Bleachy Hair”?

  • Gaby

That Burberry swimsuit is pure grandma.

    • The Versatile Chef

      But still, I like it.

      (Maybe it’s because I’m a grandma)

  • GuidosDaddy

Things she’s bad at: “I’m probably not great at talking or understanding emotional things” This explains why she has dead eyes.

    • Dora K.

Heh. I like that she said that though. It’s an actual real answer that doesn’t sound rehearsed or calculated. Almost makes me want to read the rest of the interview.

    • lovelyivy

Possibly also why I’ve never been a huge fan of her music. She’s technically wonderful but completely lacks the ability to emote, or make her songs live (except the one about taking a bat to a cheating boyfriend’s car, that was hilariously pretty great).

  • conniemd

I’d love a closer look at the Giambattista Valli. I’d love to see it closer up.

    • alyce1213

      It looks gorgeous.

  • Anniebet

I dunno, she looks pretty nice here. I guess I’m not surprised when singers don’t have the presence that actors do (or should have). The swimsuit is a mistake, not her fault if the magazine effed that up.

    • alyce1213

I agree. The bathing suit shot is awkward, the others are quite good.

  • IAmJ

I love the Giambattista Valli pieces. She’s a very pretty girl, I just don’t see much substance there.

  • annabelle archer

Those three sound bites are infinitely more interesting than I would have assumed her to be. Her personal styling is always so Barbiesque that I’m not surprised the MC crew didn’t know what to do with her.

  • Kate

The mirror shot is the best, but not great.

  • Sonja Brisson

Why must artists also be models? The whole concept is getting a little old — thanks, Anna Wintour. Although I’m not wild about the whole modeling world (12-year -olds posing as adults? little Russian girls from the steppes being ripped off?) you can be pretty, and not a model. Plus, why not put people who are professionals in another sphere into realistic, interactive scenarios? It is just a lack of imagination. Cookie cutter culture is getting boring.

    • BrooklynBomber

      Hear, hear.

  • PrunellaV

Kind of a blonde Katy Perry Lite. Everything about the second-to-last shot is terrific, however.

  • jmorino08

She looks like a blond Zooey Deschanel in that Burberry swimsuit, no?

  • nannypoo

“The people they hate, I hate”. What does that mean?

    • Michelle Le

It’s like when your friend breaks up with their partner…due to loyalty, you hate the partner too (even if they did nothing wrong).

  • SewingSiren

Is she wearing a rubber mask?

  • Louise Bryan

The Giambattista Valli shot is beautiful. Maybe because she is nowhere near the camera, ergo no mugging thereto?

  • Elizabeth Davis

My first thought on seeing the cover shot: prodigious blonde sideburns. I can’t unsee it now.

  • jetpackdino

…I wonder if that swimsuit is actually supposed to go in the water…

She looks pretty. I like that she’s into Queen and Aerosmith. :)

  • MartyBellerMask

Her hair doesn’t look “beachy”, nor is her skin “sun-kissed”.

  • Glam Dixie

In everything I’ve ever read about her she sounds like she’d be a hoot to hang out with, and while the pictures aren’t Earth shattering, they are lovely.

  • PeaceBang

    My, that was awkward.

  • Sara__B

Her hair looks dry and ruined. Is that supposed to look good?

    • MoHub

I believe the word you’re looking for is fried. And I totally agree with you.

  • foodycatAlicia

I love the swimsuit but I hate how she is wearing it.

    • MoHub

That vintage swimsuit design requires a more buxom body. One’s figure should fill out and shape the garment. This suit just hangs.

  • marshmallowjane

A weird choice is to put both red and plum together on a magazine cover. I think she looks great in the swimsuit. That’s a hot suit. Her neck, chest and arms look beautiful.

I agree. She doesn’t give great face. The photographers should help relax her face to soften her look.

  • blueberrypanckae

I like it -It’s a different makeup look for her- more mature/refined, that is a good thing. She is serving an ANTM “broken model” shoulder hunch-unnatural.

  • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

She is cute as a button, not a sexy siren. Once they figure that out, they’ll stop with these silly layouts.

    • HengRu

I feel like that’s Carey Mulligan’s situation as well.

  • shorty j

this might just be me, but in every picture, her facial expression looks like “…could you say that again? I didn’t quite hear you.”

  • In_Stitches

Too much black under her eyes; it makes her look like droopy dog. She has lovely shaped eyes though.

  • carnush

Your opening line says it all. Trying too hard.

  • golden_valley

Is that an actual swimsuit that could get wet and not look like s***t afterwards?

  • unbornfawn

The hair is horrible in this spread.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

She does have kind of a blank, bland expression, but she does look gorgeous in these pics.

  • guest2visits

I thought the MK was the most trite, and dated-done look. I like the swimsuit and GV skirt& top looks best.
