Carey Mulligan in Vionnet at Cannes

Posted on May 20, 2013

LOVE this look:

Carey Mulligan (pictured with Justin Timberlake) attends the premiere of ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ during the 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival in a Vionnet a deco inspired white cady gown with a deep V-neck paired with Brian Atwood platform sandals.

Vionnet Fall 2013 Collection

It’s super-dramatic and it really suits her (although Rooney Mara must’ve given her the stinkeye for wearing it first). We love the hair and only like the makeup, but at least it’s an improvement from her recent too-washed-out looks. It’s still not enough for us, though. We’re not suggesting she slather on the warpaint – because her face really isn’t right for that – but when she’s in a black and white gown and her hair is swept off her face like that, she’s in some need of color. It doesn’t help that she’s not wearing earrings.

And don’t misunderstand us; if she really doesn’t like to wear makeup or earrings, that’s fine. But she should probably stay away from dresses like these and hairstyles like that since they’re both calling for more dramatic makeup and jewelry.

Still, it’s a fabulous dress.

I honestly can’t comment on Carey’s dress, I’m too distracted by JT’s smile and well-groomed man beard.

    • aeb1986

Omg ditto! They make a nice looking couple. Sorry JB

    • Louise Bryan

Much better than the visiting uncle look.

  • rag254

That hair color is oddly aging her. It’s been making her beautiful presence slightly off.

    • Beardslee

I’d say more than slightly. It drains her something fierce.

  • crash1212

Fabulous dress and I think she looks better in it than the model. The rest of the look = meh. It’s almost a waste of a great dress…Rooney Mara should’ve had a chance at it, she would’ve made it sing.

    • alyce1213

See, I think Rooney Mara would’ve just stood there with her fists clenched and a sourish, blank expression on her face.

      • ankali

But… but that’s how she makes things sing…

::stumbles away, sobs and reaffirms irrational love of Rooney Mara::

    • drdarke

Didn’t Boris Karloff wear Carey Mulligan’s outfit in THE BLACK CAT…?

  • She looks scary because all the veins and tendons in her neck are poking out. A sandwich would do more good than foundation.

    • j_anson

My neck tendons do that when I’m laughing too, and I have had plenty of sandwiches.

    • Kat

TLo has discussed this many times. This is not a site for weight bashing. It is a site about fashion. Telling someone to eat a sandwich is just as rude as telling someone to put down that sandwich. Talk about the dress, not about her physical appearance.

    • SugarSnap108

Neck tendons are quite common and useful. And I can see mine, too.

  • gorghast

It’s a fabulous dress that I don’t like on her.

    • conniemd

This. Dress is dramatic, clean-lined and elegant. She’s too pallid and wallflower looking to carry it off.

      • gabbilevy

I’m swooning picturing SWINTON in this.

  • Janet B

I wouldn’t of thought she could pull off a severe dress so very well.

  • PeaceBang

The poor girl looks ghastly. Ill, exhausted, gaunt, grey-skinned and the dress is just hanging off her. That shade of lipstick should be taken out and shot.

    • sugarkane105

You’re right about the lip shade, but I don’t know, I think she’s just a skinny girl with pale skin. I’ve never seen her look as happy as she does in that third shot. It’s nice to see a couple celebrities with genuine smiles on their faces. Though she probably is exhausted from all the Gatsby pole dancing.

      • Kat

I agree. I’m also a skinny girl with pale skin. There are a couple of us out there…

  • I’m gonna say I think this is just-right, to use the goldilocks scale. She tends to veer between too harsh and too soft/washed-out (generally towards the latter) but that light plum lipstick really suits her.

The close-ups here make me realize how much she looks like she could be Kiernan Shipka’s older sister. It’s a little eerie. You can just tell that Carey would be the quiet, studious, serious older sister and Kiernan would be the chatty, sarcastic younger.

Someone make a teen movie with that dynamic and cast them in it. Something maybe about sisterhood, possibly with a road trip (older sister driving to college, younger sister stows away to come along, hijinks ensue). I’d see it.

    • charlotte

I’m glad I’m not the only one who just made that Kiernan connection. I wonder why I’ve never noticed it before.

  • alyce1213

Very much improved. I can’t wait to see this new Coen bros. movie.

  • Jillybean

I don’t know. It looks better from a distance than up close. The closer you zoom in, the more cheap that black flap looks. And it keeps making me feel like she’s wearing a backpack or something. Eh. I don’t love it. The pale face and lack of accessories (even a bracelet would’ve been better than nothing) send the whole look out for me.

  • JT looks really good. That’s mostly what I was looking at.

  • bellafigura1

I love this, it’s perfect, including the nude make-up palette and the no-jewelry thing. She’s refreshing.

  • capybara_cafe

I guess I’m alone in not liking this dress. It’s not at all flattering and just plain weird looking. And the side boob is bordering on an assistant needing to run in with a glue gun or something. I really like her hair from the back though.

  • SylviaFowler

What is wrong with her face? She looks like an old woman who is wearing costume makeup to make her look young.

    • I said the same thing. Not just in this picture. She’s no raving beauty, but again, her makeup isn’t right.

  • RedRaven617

I don’t know…. she is only 27 and looks so much older. Not sure if it is the dress, makeup or hair. Or all of it.

  • The dress is striking but she is too wispy to pull it off well. I feel as if she is going to blow away if all that fabric catches a good wind.

  • The dress looks fine in the first shot, although she looks like she’s about to go to the firing line with that expression. The other shots, the dress starts to look cheaper and cheaper. And she’s looking painfully thin, like she’s been ill or something.

    • Kat

This site is about fashion, not weight or any other physical appearance. For all we know she’s extremely stressed out or she’s very tired, or just naturally thin.

  • TheAmericaness

In that first picture they look like a naughty royal couple being announced to the queen to explain why they went on a bender two nights before. Nice dress. Glad she has makeup of color on.

  • LaSylphide

Don’t really like the dress on her. Yes, it’s dramatic, but it’s also too baggy for somebody so frail looking. She looks engulfed. (I’d love to see this dress on La Swinton.)

    • ballerinawithagun

Even though Tilda is probably just as thin, Tilda has the presence required of this dress. Why does she look so sad except when Justin is making her laugh?

      • Pennymac

I thought she looked close to tears in a few of the shots.

        • shorty j

to me, she ALWAYS looks like someone just poked her in both eyeballs, Three-Stooges-style.

      • RebeccaKW

I know some people’s ‘resting face’ is not always a happy face. My resting face tends to make me look pissed off.

  • Introspective

the dress just hangs on her. the makeup looks like a good hard cry happened in her dressing room beforehand. the lack of jewelry makes my teeth hurt.

so yeah, i see the potential for fabulousness. but i dont think she fully executes here.

  • LOVE this. It’s such a striking dress. Her makeup is pretty, and better than usual, but she could have still used a slightly bolder lip color.

  • She keeps being one of those women who I think look better than the models. She is so striking yet also accessible. And JT as an accessory ain’t bad. 😉

  • blueberrypanckae

the dress is wearing her…she needs to find the happy medium up from her usual boring and down from this too couture look that she cant give the “umph” it needs

  • j_anson

That’s a lovely dress that suits her really well.

Hey, just because she’s on my irrational hate list doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate her style.

  • Pennymac

The dress is striking. From afar. Close up, it looks hurriedly made.

    • guest2visits

Exactly that – from far off; kind of classy. The closer I get; the more it looks like she got cheated out of decent dress.

  • Man, you guys, I could not disagree more. I hate this dress so much, and I think it looks ridiculous on her. A slit up the front is never lovely. And that black strip of fabric looks like it was pinned on at the last minute. And every photograph makes her look like she’s thinking “why am I here? Why am I dressed in this awful, artless shift? Why am I wearing a brunette’s makeup? There’s “taking risks” and there’s “wearing the wrong thing,” and I think this is definitely the latter.

  • Wear some f n bling!

  • Luna

Fantastic outfit, but I’d rather see it on Tilda or Cate Blanchett. This look is too severe for her lovely, doll-like features IMO.

  • OrigamiRose

I feel awful for saying this but if someone recommended that I wear this dress, I’d feel like the size of my cleavage was being insulted.

    • CommenterFormerlyKnownAsR

heh. I agree with you. I find that weird gap (doesn’t seem right to me to call it a keyhole) incredibly unappealing.

  • SewingSiren

That’s a Rooney Mara dress if I ever saw one, but she’s not doing half bad with it. Considering.

    • Tatiana Luján

It’s so Rooney Mara it would be boring on Rooney Mara.

  • Anniebet

She lacks the gravitas (and breasts) to pull off such a stark, interesting gown. Although, the more I look at it I’m reminded of Sally Field as the Flying Nun.

Hair is her usual boring in front, but the back is nice. All in all, I’m sure she’s a lovely person and I really really want to like her, but I can never see her as anything but bland and vanilla no matter what dress she wears and how she’s styled. You’d think as a blank canvas that stylists could do wonders with her.

  • Meredith Walsh

I love how interacted with the six or seven tuxedo’d men she was flanked by. It is such a witty take on men’s wear.

  • CT14

    I hate her hair.

    I hate it.

She has to stop pulling it back severely and poofing/bump-it-ing the top. And it’s too light for her. She’s adorable as a brunette or dark blond. I hardly recognize her anymore.

  • Oh my god the first picture.

“Step away, bitches. I’m walking here.”

    That is some glorious bitchface.

  • BrooklynBomber

I don’t see this on her. Well, I’m looking at the picture, so I see it, but I think her look–her face, her vibe–is too young and down to earth for such a sophisticated dress.

  • MilaXX

I love this look. For once her Tilda lite look is working for me. I even like the makeup, it’s a much better minimal look than she has been sporting ass of late. I probably would have gone at least a shade darker on the lips, but that’s my only quibble.

  • nannypoo

I like the dress but not for her. I hate her hair and makeup. She needs to look at some of her beautiful magazine covers and try to remember how it felt to make that face, and then compose her face that way every time she has her picture taken instead of the sad or bored or pruney expressions we always see on her. She’s a pretty woman, but she almost never looks pretty at these events.

  • Carla_Charlton

In movies, I think she looks so much more attractive than she does in these kind of photos. The hair color is not flattering to her skin tone (would it be so bad to be a brunette?) and for the most part she doesn’t look happy — her expressions remind me of Princess Charlene, who is married to Prince Albert of Monaco. BUT that is a gorgeous dress and fits her beautifully, although an elegant bracelet and earrings would have completed the look.

  • quiltrx

Love the gown, love the hair. I’m even fine with the makeup. I think a killer pair of drop earrings would have been the perfect accent!

  • GORGEOUS. I love Vionnet’s reboot!

  • demidaemon

I think this dress is awkward. I just don’t get it.

  • I actually love the drama of the dress, but I fear the extremely thin, extremely blonde look is working against her natural beauty.

  • jetpackdino

From his vantage point above that plunging neckline, Justin Timberlake could probably get a good look at Carey’s, um, shoes.

  • Qitkat

Gorgeous hair from the back, although I prefer her with tousled short hair. She is very fine-boned and delicate, so that is a lot of dramatic dress to pull off. She almost succeeds. But please Carey, wear some earrings, even diamond studs would have helped finish the look.

  • Blehh, don’t like the top half of it

  • I think I like the top at the bust, certainly not the flap in the back. The dress overall is great, but it seems like it could be fitted slightly better.

  • . I find it difficult to love a dress when it’s on the wrong person. It’s on the wrong person.

    • Yes! And I think when Anne Hathaway was looking for the perfect Oscar dress…this is probably what she had in mind.

      • it definitely would have suited Annie much better. Carey Mulligan is just too pale for these things.

  • StillGary

I think if anyone could pull off that dress it would be her — but it is just too weird — like she’s wearing the Baby Bjorn wrong…

  • lulukittie

This is just a tad too austere for her, methinks.

  • The medical examiner just lifted her LBD so he could begin the autopsy. I can see nothing else. Too much CSI in my youth, I guess…

  • SugarSnap108

What a striking dress. And I must give him cred for looking sharp, too.

  • imakeart

Look at the crow’s feet on those two beautiful people in the 4th picture. Suddenly, I fell better about myself!

  • ashtangajunkie

I love this dress and especially enjoy it on her. I think some sparkle on her ears would have taken it up a notch, but I can live without them.

  • tereliz

I love this dress. She’s been really pulling out all the stops lately wearing these very edgy, minimalist designs, and I love her for it.

However… she needs to figure out what to do with her eyes to add a little more drama without overpowering her whole face. When she wore that pink Dior gown with the red lip, I loved the contrast, but felt it was too much color for her otherwise clean face. I’m convinced she needs to go with more dramatic eye makeup if she’s going to continue wearing more minimalist clothing.

Like the smoky eye when she wore that metallic scale Prada dress to last year’s Met gala. Maybe not so soft and smudgy, just enough definition to keep her face from fading into the background when she’s wearing such awesome clothes.

  • The two of them together are definitely channeling modern Gatsby realness. I may not be Gatsby, but I totally have a crush on Carey, too. Too bad for JT that it wasn’t a “pairs division,” because he’s totally rocking that tux, and groomed beard.

  • Kristobel

Definitely needs a flashy earring or even a bangle, jeez.

  • She looks great, but someone feed her a bagel!

  • Turtle_Island

  • I don’t get her appeal and why she’s everywhere… if it weren’t for the Uncles, I wouldn’t know her. And I still don’t know what she does.

    • NoGovernmentName

The Great Gatsby. An Education. Never Let You Go. She’s a very good actress.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Hair color is ugly. I love that dress. But just not on her.
