Carey Mulligan in Lanvin

Posted on May 06, 2013

We’re still not in love with the way she’s been getting her hair and makeup done lately …

Carey Mulligan attends the pre-Met Ball special screening of ‘The Great Gatsby’ at MOMA in New York City in a Lanvin black cropped jacket and pants paired with Brian Atwood ‘Aida’ sandals and Tiffany & Co. jewelry.

But we are definitely in love with this look. It’s perfect for her. She’s definitely planting her style flag in Swinton/Blanchett territory, isn’t she?

That hair is killing us, though. The makeup is still too underdone for the look, but it’s passably okay. That hair just looks fried, fine, and dead. Shake your hair out for us, darling.

Hair looks like she’s trying to look older and less attractive (and pale make up is helping that along) but the outfit is amazing–the red carpet ladypants of our dreams.

      Tilda’s mini-me.

      • drdarke

        Not David Bowie’s twin sister, @facebook-100000647557201:disqus ?

        Or is that Tilda Swindon…?

        • jetpackdino

What a great family portrait we could make. Tilda & Bowie as Mom & Dad, with Carey as the child.

    • http://twitter.com/steeenie Christine Hart

I wonder if she’s trying to look as differently as her Daisy character as possible.

if SWINTON was rocking this look, i would die.

I honestly dislike the the sleeves–that strange optical illusion that she has impossibly thin arms that stick upwards in the form of impossibly thin shoulders. Am I the only one seeing it? It’s driving me insane.

      • Kristin McNamara

Nah. Now that you mention it, I can kind of see it. Didn’t immediately jump out at me though (fortunately).

      • SugarSnap108

You’re not the only one. The awkwardness of the sleeves, particularly the shoulder, jumped out at me right away. I think the cut looks particularly weird on someone with her small frame. The model is pulling it off better — not that she’s “big,” but it seems like she has broader shoulders.

      • Sara L.

Yeah, it kind of looks like her arms are popsicle sticks stuck on with brads

      • Monabel

I love an unusual sleeve, this works for me.

    • http://twitter.com/KathrynTewson Kathryn Tewson

She definitely looks like Baby Swinton here.

    • alyce1213

I find the jacket oddly and overly designed. Too many elements fighting each other, none of them strong enough to win (that is, define the jacket), don’t make sense together.
Also, hair and makeup a washout. Toenails a disaster.

I appreciate that she’s not pole dancing in flapper dresses, but I don’t think this is so great.

      • Little_Olive

        Yes on the jacket.

Of course I had to go and look at her feet. With so many shoe options, why go with the ones that show the suffering caused by the shoe insanity we are subjected to?

        • Kristin McNamara

My toes positively ACHE for hers…. poor blistered things :(

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

It’s a bit Jedi tuxedo for me.

    • aeb1986

Love the outfit but with her hair and makeup like that it reads to me like a 16 year old in a woman’s pant suit.

    • erinbinek

Poor thing looks like she needs a good foot soak. Of course, it might help if she wore shoes that actually fit.

      • ringthing

        A good pedicure would help.

    • lundibleu

Can we have someone, anyone, do a decent shoot with her, Swinton and Blanchett now please?

She looks great, hair aside. More relaxed than she has in the past.

    • http://twitter.com/hugandpint Courtenay P

She’s too small for this look. Would love to see it on someone taller.

    • MilaXX

      She looks like a robot

    • Little_Olive

She definitely carries these looks much better than the frilly-girly ones; who knew.

But she still hasn’t quite figured the hair and makeup to go with it. She thinks minimal/modern, but that is not the right interpretation for the concept.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

I don’t like it. At all. And the fact that it’s so heavily SWINTON and Blanchettesque is causing me to cry poor imposter rather than style nodding.

    • embers618

Not enough face for that suit. It seems that she’s going for a Swinton/Blanchette style, but even though they don’t do heavy makeup, they still bring fierce face/hair. This is just not it.

      • Little_Olive

They both also have piercing eyes. Hers are weak in that regard -they go for sweet rather than intense.

    • http://www.two-halves.com/ Michelle Le

Maybe since it’s sponsored by MAC she goes in with a blank face to come out drag-tastic! If the MAC ladies at my local department store are anything to go by…?

    • CommentsByKatie

Yes..she’s like a baby Tilda/Cate. Or perhaps a teenage one. She’s in an awkward phase right now, but if she keeps at it, she might blossom into a beautiful Swintonflower someday.

      • judybrowni

90 year old socialite outfit, and her makeup makes her look anemic.

    • norseofcourse

tiny head + big, puffy shoulders = no

    • charlotte

She got rid of the pixie and is now pretending that it is still there. Honey, get your hair figured out!

    • Anniebet

She hasn’t the style, the elegance, or the edgy quality to even enter the Swinton ballpark. Just because she’s playing around with a pale, washed out head does not a Kate nor a Tilda make. Ms. Mulligan is bland. Maybe it’s her stylist’s fault, but she ain’t about to enter the pantheon just yet.

    • jw_ny

that ugly jacket just over powers her. Don’t like a thing from the waist up, and not sure if I even like the pants.

She’s got a long way to go before she’s in Swinton and Blanchett’s league…not sure if she’ll ever get to that level either…

    • a_liking

wow, this does not work for me. at all. not a look she can pull off imo.

    • nannypoo

If my hair looked like that I’d look pissed off too.

    • watchmeboogie

Like you TLo I’ve been hating her hair & makeup lately. I know she’s trying to get away from the cutesy-gamine thing but it’s really a better look for her than this washed-out, severe thing she’s got going on.

Regardless, girl can work the shit out of an outfit, even one as hiddy as this. On her worst day she looks better than me on my best day. Luff.

    • Lattis

Every time I see her pretty face I think “Blink” !!!! (best Doctor Who ever IMO)

    • fnarf

She looks deathly ill. Hunger strike? Chemotherapy?

    • IAmJ

It seems like this ensemble was designed with someone like Gwen Stefani in mind. Carey is not working this look nearly as well as Miss Gwen could.

    • snarkykitten

She looks really young. Like a 14 year old. It’s weird.

      • sweetestsith

My thought exactly. She looks incredibly young, playing dressup in mommys closet. I really hate whatever she’s going for, she just looks silly too me.

    • Ashley

      Feeeeet!

    • http://twitter.com/RaankyRaank Raanky

The hair and makeup is becoming standard for her Gatsby appearance and its abhorrent. Guh-Ross.
      But love the look, otherwise!

    • LaSylphide

Are her arms hot glued to her sides? Just don’t like this on her at all, though I love it on the model. Carey just looks…odd.

    • jmorino08

That jacket is very Art Deco inspired, but is it me or do those sleeves look like they belong on an altogether different top?

    • http://twitter.com/MandySCG MandyJane

      I hate the jacket.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Looks too old on her, and it’s badly fitted.

    • blueberrypanckae

she has such a clean perfect” blank canvas” face for makeup, I bet with the right makeup artist she could have flawless face !

    • elzatelzabelz

Her poor feet. Maybe put on some closed toes and a bunch of band aids?

    • http://www.facebook.com/conysoledad Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

      Tilda Swinton wannabe.

    • trisker

My mother called this “hair skinned back” and her implication was that it was always unattractive.

    • http://twitter.com/omg_dora Dora K.

Ridiculous. She’s drowning in that jacket.

    • j_anson

She’s edging into irrational hate territory for me.

      • FrigidDiva

Likewise. I can’t put my finger on it, but there’s just something there that makes my eye twitch.

    • fursa_saida

      I NEED THAT JACKET YESTERDAY.

    • http://twitter.com/___primirox247 Primi Ranola

is she trying to be Giulietta Masina, or something?

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I feel like this is wearing her, rather than the other way around. The outfit, while gorgeous, has beaten her into submission. She’s not “lioness” enough for this. And of course I totally agree that the makeup & hair are a disaster.

    • formerlyAnon

      Great look.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

The only thing I don’t like about her hair is the color. Aside from that, it’s (at worst) harmless.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

She definitely needs bolder makeup with this look. The clothes say “edgy and fierce,” and her makeup and hair say “first day of 9th grade.”

    • demidaemon

I think she looks really uncomfortable in this, like her arms are broken and the sleeves are her casts. i also don’t like where the crotch hits. Also re:her head styling: Carey, you need to do something else. Just something else. And give your hair some TLC.

    • Imasewsure

This look is really growing on me. I don’t understand the strange hair and makeup disconnect with this very glamorous look but it’s strangely interesting to me too. Maybe I’ve lost it…or maybe I’m just starting to see her as the lost Olsen sister

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

she looks like a pale and sickly child. work some warmth into your lovely face and hair. her hair would be in style at the asylum.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=639062430 Sara Padilla

Restaurant Hostess from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

    • thecitysleeps

I love this, I even like the hair/make up. It’s a look let’s say. Wish she’d add at least studs to her ears, and those shoes are iffy for me. I just dislike platforms of any sort.

    • MoHub

Them’s some Danial Esquivel shoulders on that jacket!

    • jetpackdino

Vampire or victim… hard to tell.

She’s definitely staking out her territory. She’s going for a very unique, intelligent-rather-than-just-beautiful look. I love this girl, and I approve, but part of me still wants more color on her face.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=768540908 Badriya Al-Badi’a

More make up and she’s a Janelle Monae back up dancer. Which is not a bad thing.

    • CatherineRhodes

      She looks awful.

    • MarissaLG

I really like this outfit, but it looks like something’s missing here and I can’t put my finger on it. Maybe it’s the hair, maybe it’s the makeup, maybe it’s a lack of accessories, or maybe it’s all three.

    • tereliz

I love the way she’s gone all hard-edged to counter her Daisy flapper film role, but her body’s writing checks that her face can’t cash.

      Awesome jacket.

    • lalahartma

      I think she looks terrible.

    • Beardslee

blonde is not her color, and neither is black

    • Nimble27

I don’t think she has the personality to carry off those shoulders. More waif than fierce to my eyes.

    • Jacqueline

Definitely taking a cue from Blachett and Swinton, but I think she’s looking gaw-juss.

    • ankali

NO to the pleated pants! I like the jacket and this look in theory, but I feel like the shape is just yucky because of those pants.

    • bellafigura1

I really love this look and I especially love the make-up. I am SO tired of the full-on face, with no actual skin showing through, damn the Kardashian effect. I do agree that the hair — color and styling — do not support this directional nude make-up.
