The gown is lovely, if a tiny bit bridal. But, my main question is when did she suddenly grow all of that hair?

  • majorbedhead

That color fades into her skin. Her hair is too blond and her lipstick is harsh. Also? Side boob. Dammit, Sally Sparrow, you’re letting me down.

  • aeb1986

are you allowed to get ass grabbed in Dior?

  • 1. Do your hair 2. His hand is on your butt and 3. Isn’t that dress super close to the pink Oscar dress Gwynny wore many years ago?

    • AnaRoW

I was thinking the same thing about Goop’s dress except that Carey’s actually fits and at least she doesn’t have helmet hair.

      • THIS, a thousand times.

    • mshesterp

I definitely flashed back to Gwyn’s oscar gown. Wasn’t in love with it then, not in love with it now.

  • Beautiful Dress, nicely deployed. Keeping it simple was the right choice, but MAN do those lips pull all the focus. BTW, And I love her man accessory best of all. He’s a dish.

    • My thoughts exactly. I think I looked at him more than her.

      • His only flaw? His pants need to be hemmed. I could quickly remedy that myself, if he would just hand them over. I will blind hem them while we um, chat.

        • Or you could hem them with him in them, while you um, chat.

    • AnaRoW

      That’s Baz Luhrman.

      • yeah, It finally sunk in who he was, as I looked again. He’s still pretty much of a strudel.

        • lexilexi

          And what about Leonardo?

          • I’ve never been on the Leo train, myself. He doesn’t turn my motor over.

    • flamingoNW

well I’m grateful she wore any noticeable make up at all, given how she’s been appearing lately. My only problem is that the dress has too prominent seams

    • j_anson

Ugh, I literally thought he was her father, until the ass grab.

  • Gorgeous. I wouldn’t have thought this style would compliment her, but she looks fantastic.

  • SewingSiren

The rain is making a mess out of all the dresses, but other than that she looks good.

  • VicksieDo

Why does that old man have his hand on her ass??

    • Suddenly

      That’s Baz Luhrman.

      • alyce1213

So why does that old Baz Luhrman have his hand on her ass?

        • Aurumgirl

I do not want to know.

        • Suddenly

Good question. I hope it was an accidental brush. Otherwise, creepy.

        • sweetestsith

While she looks super uncomfortable… Yes, I wondered the same.

        • DinaSews

Maybe he was going for her waist and forgot how short he was?

          • jetpackdino

            Laughed out loud.

        • j_anson

          Welcome to being an actress.

      • VicksieDo

        No idea who that is…

  • The lips are too bold for this look. From the waist down, its great. I love the dress, even against her pale skin. That’s not even a hair style, that’s just…hair. No girl, just no.

  • Clearly you are. In front of millions of paparazzi, too!

    • aeb1986

haha- and look him giving Leo the stink eye in the second to last picture

    • Even Toby is smirking.

      • I know, Right?

        • Rand Ortega

I think Baz has something of a nerd crush on Ms. Carey. See how he’s gazing longingly at her? Kinda creepy considering his wife (the film’s costume & production designer) is right there (the blond in the red dress in other photos of the event).

          • C. C. Winslow

Maybe she’s a lot shorter than Carey, and her waistline would be the same height as Carey’s ass. Or maybe not. 🙂

          • I was picking up on that too. He looks obsessed, she looks uncomfortable and the Toby and Leo look like high school boys grinning about it. I swear that one shot is her asking Leo to start blocking for her.

          • makeityourself

He was much the same with Nicole 10 years ago during Moulin Rouge. I guess is he falls in love with his leading ladies, somewhat like Alfred Hitchcock or Woody Allen. Sort-of.

  • Laura

Such a stunning gown. Why’d she have to go and screw it up with that lank hair?

  • IAmJ

Not good enough for Cannes, honey.

    • Yep and I confess, i don’t get her. I don’t think she’s all that as an actress and has always seemed rather common…

      • Same here! She seriously underwhelms.

      • Sobaika

I liked her in An Education. But yes, much ado about very little something.

    • ceceliadid

Yup – she needs a necklace and a makeup consult, and the hair needs zhuzhing.

She doesn’t have the bone structure for the striking goddess (Cate, Tilda, Gwyneth) look, no matter how much she tries to stretch her neck up. I thought her quirky Prada phase suited her looks better.

      • sekushinonyanko

Maybe if she at least threw some contour and eyeliner in the situation it would help give her some definition in the face.

  • Tatiana Luján

I love the ethereal look on her.
Did you notice teh director’s hand on her butt?

  • gabbilevy

I wondered the same thing at first, but I think she’s just been hiding it in up-dos.

    • StrandedFashionista

      Ah. That’ makes sense.

    • Yeah, I think the up-dos have been her go-to while she’s been growing it out (?).

  • Why the sourpuss?! I just saw her on Colbert and she’s such a doll.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

Speaking as someone who hates rain with a passion, I’m guessing the weather put a bit of a damper on showing off her gown.

    • MilaXX

      I CAN’T READ!

    • jetpackdino

So much love for that episode.

    • CommentsByKatie

Yes! I had barely heard of her before Gatsby and I just LOVED her on Jon Stewart (or Colbert? Or both?) What a beautiful voice and an intelligent woman. It was actually enough to make me want to go see Gatsby; I was on the fence before because of bad reviews.

  • Dear Carey, I will set weeping angels upon you if you don’t address that awful hair color in the near future.

  • carnush

    I like it.

  • Tom Shea

I think the dress is beautiful, but the severity of the makeup makes her look much older than her usually-youthful 27.

  • Pennymac

“I believe some of that horrid lipstick is on your teeth” Leo whispers to Carey.

And as if the ass grab wasn’t enough, that last photo, the one where shes grabbing a handful of her own ass?
Thats a sure sign of an over active “Rectal Magnet” aka: underwear creep.

  • lehen

i love the last picture – it looks like she’s trying to fix a massive gown-wedgie.

  • I have to say something. Some girls can do the stark, colorless looks, but you have to have this perfect bone structure to make up for it all. And be just naturally striking. I think she may think she is more fascinating-looking all pared down than she really is. And now I sound like a bitch, but she needs more than just a red lip or awkward slicked back, medium-length hair. And hi, you just starred in a summer blockbuster – you don’t have to wear a feather head dress but damn.

    • jetpackdino

I get what you’re saying with the perfect bone structure that starkness demands. Kind of like how Sting and Bowie and Tilda and Cate can all cut glass and cast shadows with their cheekbones. Carey can’t quite do that. She’s amazing, and beautiful, but in a different way. I think she’s still trying to find her own personal style.

      • That is exactly what I mean! I think she is searching and ya can’t blame a gal for trying looks on, but she isn’t, I don’t know, androgenous enough? I feel like she really is very youthful – round apple cheeks, sparkly eyes – and feminine, so none of it works for me.

    • copper

I don’t know, I don’t think it’s really her hairstyle or her make-up — I think she looks her best when her face is moving and caught up in some expression. Like in these photos — she’s nothing special in the first few but then when she’s actually talking she looks much better and quite charming and compelling. I suppose it’s a good talent for an actress but doesn’t really come through for still photos.

  • jetpackdino

Her hair must be styled with some weapons-grade straightening product, because normal hair would be frizzing out in that rain and humidity.

She looks okay. Not exactly sure why I’m not loving this, because I do love her.

  • Diego!

She looks like a ghost! I hate the hair and make up. Love the lips tough. That dress is fabulous but it would have been perfect in a different color!

  • Really? She wears a string of high-impact looks with practically NO makeup, and breaks out the bright red lipstick (that totally does NOT go) for the plain baby pink gown?
Ok, I’m extremely unimpressed with her style crew. Fire your makeup guy, Carey, he has NO IDEA what goes with what. (Or stop doing your own and hire a professional.)

    • Yes, to all this!

    • Aurumgirl

I think she’s just hitting all the wrong buttons on this pole dance. The hair colour, the dress colour, the lipstick colour are all bad for her, as if someone has styled her on what they wish she would look like rather than who she actually is. That makes me a bit uncomfortable. Especially seeing her dressed to look like a “wanna be” who is paraded down the red carpet with her boss’ hand on her ass.

  • Sobaika

I guess an exception is made for high-powered directors.

  • BrooklynBomber

    Gwinny! Oh, sorry.

  • I can’t sign on to couture that includes side-boob.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

That’s what I was thinking. The whole elegant effect of a Dior gown is sort of ruined by the dude copping an ass feel.

    • lexilexi

That dude is the director. He’s allowed I guess.

      • Sadly, I suspect most actresses are almost contractually obliged to put up with such crap.

        • Rand Ortega

Actually, dear Kiltdntiltd, thanks to some really brave actresses (actors, too) & some female execs who raise the cash & in the executive departments, it isn’t nearly as bad as it once was. As much as I despise the GOOP, she was at the forefront of calling out the “casting couch”. Even named names, which until she did it was unheard of. Heads rolled, lawsuits, too. & currently, depending on your rep, your rank & your bank, some performers are Teflon sleaze proof.

          • Thanks so much for this! I am delighted to hear some forward motion has been made at last.

          • Rand Ortega

Of course, this is not to say the entire media business still isn’t covered in assholes. They just don’t spread their assholery in that category as much anymore.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

Gotta disagree. Director or not, I would never say he’s allowed.

  • AlisonS

I really want to like this! I just…. don’t. Her hair looks sadly undone. Her makeup is beautiful, but it’s too “Gweny won an Oscar” for my taste….

I LOVE Leo in picture 5 though. Made this whole post worth it!

  • Airkisses

That hair and makeup makes her look like Samatha from Sex and the City. Pity, because I love the rest of the look!

  • alyce1213

The dress overwhelms her, or maybe she underwhelms the dress.
She looks 10 years older than her age.

    • Sobaika

She’s playing the love interest of someone a decade older, so maybe that was intentional.

      • Guest

        More like 2 decades plus.

        • Sobaika

Hah, he looks it, doesn’t he? And she looks younger than 28. But there’s about 10 years age difference between the two of them.

This is how Hollywood casts characters who’re meant to be contemporaries *rolls eyes*

  • SugarSnap108

I feel like the last pic is less about keeping the dry dress than protecting herself from another ass-grab. The color’s drab for someone with her skin tone, but she does have a floaty, ethereal feel here that I kinda dig.

  • MilaXX

Is that the dress Goop wore forever ago?

  • She’s suffering from a color allergy. Won’t someone take up a collection to find a cure?

    • jetpackdino

Color allergy. Awesome phrase. Stealing it!

  • Trashionista

you can see her weave in the pics.

    • Candigirl1968

Her new weave must have come with a red lipstick. Like the hair, it’s the first time we’ve seen it.

  • P West

I think this look ages her. Hair color, makeup, all of it. She is a young woman with an adorable pixie face. The Gwyneth Paltrow look does nothing for her. The first thing that I would ditch is the harsh blond hair.

  • kimbalala

forget Carey….second to last picture….dude in the sequined jacket, black hair, and white goatee.

That’s a look that demands attention.

    • Sobaika

      Amitabh Bachchan! He plays Wolfsheim.

And yeah, Bollywood actors do not mess around on the red carpet.

      • PastryGoddess

You beat me to it! Love him

  • oh honey, you’re a gamine, not an ice princess. Fire whoever flat-ironed you into going blonde.

  • Carla_Charlton

So glad you mentioned the hair color. When watching “the Great Gatsby” last weekend I kept thinking how unflattering that hair color is on her. But the dress here, while a little bridal, is flattering on her, in spite of the side boob.

    • I haven’t gotten excited about the Great Gatsby since the first time around in the 1970s when they also made a HUGE deal about it. I haven’t seen Carey Mulligan in a movie, and now she’s all over the place. She is very plain looking to me. I don’t get all the fuss, but I have an open mind. Did you like the movie? Was it worth all the fuss?

      • This movie, was not. But she, is. Watch ‘An Education’ and all will become clear.

        • butterflysunita

Yes, I haven’t seen her in any movies either and looking at photos of her just couldn’t see her as Daisy. But if she’s an amazing actress, all is explained.

          • NoGovernmentName

I loved her in An Education, Never Let You Go, and Shame. As Daisy, frankly, she portrayed a lot more dewy-eyed hurt than I thought the character warranted. That is to say, her version of Daisy had more depth than Daisy Buchanan.

          • Ok, right?? She’s just too intelligent of an actress to be Daisy. That being said, I would’ve hated if the part had gone to Blake Lively.

        • ballerinawithagun

          An Education was excellent!

        • I am getting the DVD as soon a it comes out for the fashion porn and the party scenes. I never read the book or saw the previous movies. I found all the characters in the movie pretty revolting, except for the narrator, but Tobey McGuire is too sappy and can’t really pull the artificiality of this world, so he ended up annoying me. I think I have only really liked him in “Pleasantville.”. But the lovely schmattes and the decor are just yummy.

          • I adored the book but I know the movie will be awful but I’m seeing it for the splendour, beauty, music and all the shiny things.

        • I see that Nick Hornby wrote “An Education.” He wrote one of my faves, “Hi Fidelity,” so I’ll give the movie a shot. Thx.

          • Good! Honestly the set and costuming is just lovely and she does a great job of holding it all up.

  • PastryGoddess

This blond looks horrible on her. she looks like she’s a couple of steps away from consumption

    The dress is meh

    • Patricia Gillett

I totally agree. Stylists, stop trying to make Consumption Chic happen. It’s not gonna happen!

  • Where did all her charm/ life energy go?

  • MilaXX

I don’t mind the look, but the lip is a bit too glaring

  • Patricia Gillett

Fit issues on top that SOMEONE should have frigging caught. For goodness sake, she’s in Dior at Cannes and no one checked for sideboob? Also, it’s too long.

I’m not even going to talk about the color because it’s such a given that she’s not going to wear any.

  • halo323

It is so refreshing to see her smile in photos. Usually her facial expression looks like someone just told her she has six weeks to live.

    • jetpackdino

Her smile is especially charming because she has the most adorable dimples.

  • Looks like she took a nap and woke up hours late, too late for a spray tan, getting her hair done, or finding her jewelry, so she slapped on some red lipstick and jumped in a cab.

  • TSkot

    Gorgeous dress.

  • mhleta

Who’s the old man with her? Her handler or her date? I don’t care how well you know a lady, you never put your hand on her ass when she’s wearing a gown. As for the styling, it makes her look weak and forgettable. Her stylist must be replaced.

  • She could have used a little bit more color somewhere, perhaps in the form of an interesting statement necklace or something. It’s pretty, but otherwise fairly standard. And I appreciate the pop of color and contrast in the lip, but it’s almost TOO distracting.

  • Okay..this is the 2nd dress today with the MOST INSANE BOOB DARTS! Does not compute. WTF is this weird trend?

  • Slap some flared sleeves on that baby, and It is an all white version of Morticia Addams.

  • GoAwayKardash

She is a wonderful actress but fashion-wise, I fell like everyone wants to make her into this big fabulous fashionista sartorial star and she just…is not.

  • Stubenville

Dear Cannes – your film festival makes you wealthier than God. So put up a real awning so celebrities wearing $50,000 gowns don’t have to run around carrying umbrellas! Is that too much to ask?

    • Rand Ortega

  • Little_Olive

It’s like Gwyneth Paltrow’s fanous pink Oscar look with anemia.

But I don’t hate it. It’s more grown up for her and the silhouette suits her.

    • Julaine

Yes it’s like Gwyneth’s famous dress with one major exception…Carey’s dress actually looks like it fits her.

      • ballerinawithagun

This dress seems to fit her at first glance but them she turns to the side and horrors….It’s side boob. Did they squash her to the side and also cut it too low?

        • makeityourself

The side boob is intentional. This is a couture gown that has been through countless fittings.

  • hate that lip color on her. The dress is waaaay too pale. You’re right on all accounts.

  • scrappy1

I can’t even focus on the dress, because Baz Luhrmann is seriously creeping me out here. The possessive-looking hand-holding, the ass grab, the side-eye at Leo for talking to Carey. There is not a single picture where he’s not touching her. I don’t know . . . maybe they’re just in love and I’m reading it wrong, but it gives me the willies.

    • Amelia

I think it is just him being creepy since she is dating that guy from Mumford and sons.

      • scrappy1

Oh, ew. That kind of makes it worse.

      • SassieCassy

  • MoHub

That last photo looks as if she’s correcting a wedgie moment.

  • Rand Ortega

I didn’t know Nicole Kidman was in “The Great Gatsby”! What an unexpected treat!
    What’s that?
That’s just Carey Mulligan stealing her look. Wow. Larcenous & bland. Usually her choices are much more interesting.

  • thecitysleeps

She just looks very uncomfortable to me. I feel like this whole movie and anything surrounding it is uncomfortable tbh. I want Carey from An Education back.

  • Rand Ortega

When you’re the director, it’s carte blanche. Ask Rupert Sanders.

  • Tracy_Flick

Things that are terrible about this, in order of increasing terribleness:
    1. The last photo, where it looks like she’s removing a wedgie
    2. Creepy Grandpa Ass-Grabber
    3. Horrific dress color for her skin tone
    4. Horrific hair color for her skin tone
    5. Horrific lip color for her skin tone
    6. Shiny, colorless face
    7. Miserable facial expression
    8. Heavy, stiff, wrinkled, poorly-fitted dress

Good god. I got a better pink dress of eBay for a Glinda the Good Witch costume.

  • conniemd

The dress is okay. Not sure what about it looks couture as it’s pretty simple in its construction. If it took hours of hand-sewing it’s only because of the sheer volume of material.

  • stubbornthoughts

Oh man, this could’ve been so good.

  • Monkey Toe

I wonder if that is why her face is so pinched; she is holding back a righteous smack.

    • MartyBellerMask

She always looks like that though. Where’s Mumford to punch Baz in the face?

  • blueberrypanckae

Her Style is is sooo booooring! ugh!

  • lucyloo222

Bad hair color, bad lip color, bad dress color, bad side boob, bad guy with hand on her ass (WTF?)…. on the bright side, the shape of the dress is lovely

  • I like the dress and can deal with the makeup. But that hair is hideous.

  • nannypoo

I wish she would practice a good face for the red carpet. She always looks like she’s been sucking lemons.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Nope, just nope. Is it my fading memory, or was Cannes more fun last year?

  • crash1212

Toby Maguire is saying…”did that old guy just put his hand on Carey’s ass?” – which is best thing about any of these pics of a very boring dress that doesn’t quite fit. Might’ve worked in another color, better fit and better hair. Also, she’s an actress, does she NOT know what she’s doing with her face?

  • lawwife

She looks a lot like Jennie Garth here.

  • CommentsByKatie

I guess dramatic pink gowns are a micro trend on the red carpet today. Carey is doing it better than anyone else so far (including The BingBing, whose mis-step I have not yet recovered from.) It’s simple but she looks great. Love the play between the actors mentioned in the comments, lol.

  • Lesley

HATE the hair. i just can’t seem to jump on the bandwagon for this slicked back hair all these ladies are doing. her hair looks super greasy, and the red lipstick is just too much for her, she looks washed out. i’m somewhat fair and a blonde as well and i don’t do red lips often because of this. i have to say though i love this dress, a bit bridal – yes but i j’adore!

  • This just makes me think of Gwyneth Paltrow, which just makes me think blah.

  • JP

My thoughts exactly. Too pale a dress for her skin, the red lip is too harsh, and OMG, the hair.

  • Anniebet

Colorless, except for the garish lips. I’m convinced that she and Diane Kruger share the same limp, thin hair and just pass it around as needed.

Baz Luhrmann does appear to be copping a feel.

  • MissAmynae

I’m in the minority, but I love this. Ice-queen Hitchcockian blonde Movie Star goodness. She looks so statuesque, and the sideboob doesn’t bother me, its tailored enough to be tasteful. The simplicity and minimalism of her dress and styling really stands out among the over the top super detailed looks on the rest of the cast.

  • jw_ny

  • decormaven

The too-strong lip color is pulling focus from the gown. Would have liked a better fit in the bodice so the bosom stays within the bodice’s boundaries. And Mister, kindly please remove your hand from her behind. There’s a difference between a helping hand and a hand that is helping oneself.

  • Elsewhere1010

Why are ALL the photographs from Cannes overexposed re: their principal subject? The men and the bystanders are fine, but in almost all the photos I’ve seen so far the women’s dresses are one f-stop away from a permanent case of lens flare.

  • I miss her short dark hair. It looked awesome and she stood out.

  • I want to like it, but it’s giving me the Gwyneth Paltrow feels….

  • She looks a little bit like Kirsten Dunst with her hair like that. She looks gorgeous head to toe, but I wish she had picked a dress in a different color.

  • VicD

Between the dress, the hair, and the acres of pale skin, she looks like the lost eldest Fanning sister.

  • I like to think she whacked Baz’s hand off her arse and that is why they are holding hands in the next picture. She wants to know where his hands are.

  • Pretty basic…but it works!

  • E. D.

Looks like it needs to be pressed.

  • l_c_ann

Something about the way the neckline is cut makes her look as if she had a chin reduction. She could have chosen any gown for this one; why this choice?

  • MartyBellerMask

The best thing about this is making up a fake conversation for them all.

  • v m

This look does her a disservice, but I’ve observed her on the press junket, and damn is she charming. Watch her on the Colbert Report. Underneath that elegant accent lies a goofy comedian!

  • abfidy

Looks more like he was in motion than going for a grab. His hand is on her hip in the picture before it and they’re holding hands in the one after. Probably just an unfortunately timed photo.

  • That fabric is awfully stiff, but the real hilarity: in that last photo, she totally looks like she’s adjusting a wedgie.

  • Mary229

    She looks so Daisy here…

  • Mary_Shelley

I hate this dress. It looks like a sewing project, poorly done…

  • That lipcolor is really not working for me…nor is the too-blonde hair. She irrationaly bothers me, though, so maybe im not the most impartial judge.

  • The last time I saw that hair was on Haldir at the Battle of Helm’s Deep.

  • macwell

Outside of that magazine spread from the other day – this is the nest I’ve seen her look, like, ever.

  • Her face looks frozen,

  • bellafigura1

    Very odd hair.

  • jmorino08

Lipstick and grab-ass on the runway?! France, it is for lovers, ness pah?!

  • Weazley

I love the silhouette, although kinda hate the seams as they taper off towards the top of the straps. Don’t mind the colour of the dress but that lipstick is making me cringe.

  • LaSylphide

Don’t like anything about this, including the fact that she looks about 40.

  • Her gentleman friend has an ungentlemanly hand on her ass.

    • Guest

That’s what I thought too. I hope her husband, Marcus Mumford, stomps the shit out of this guy while jamming out a rocking tune on his banjo.

    • Kikishua

And Tobey Maguire is laughing at that

  • quiltrx

See, I’m mostly noticing how nice Baz looks…and then I got hung up on “is she really taller than Baz? How high are her heels?” and such ruminations.
And whoever that fellow is next to Leo in the next-to-last pic…your jacket is FABULOUS, darling!

    • I just learned that the sparkly-jacketed gentleman next to Leo is Bollywood royalty Amitabh Bachchan. You’re welcome.

  • demidaemon

I’m actually a tiny bit blown away by this look. I don’t care if her hair is made of extensions or whatnot, she looks nearly WERQworthy.

  • No lie, that dress looks like my prom dress. Carey, take off that red lipstick right now or change into a dress that doesn’t wash you out.

  • gracedarling

Is she channeling Oscars Gwyneth from the year she won? It’s kind of eerie.

I hope her husband stomps the shit out of him while jamming out a rocking tune on his banjo.

    • I think people are WILDLY OVERREACTING to one picture where his hand is hovering near her ass. One picture among literally thousands that were taken in the minutes they were together on the red carpet.

It was a joke. I should have added a smiley face.

        • Didn’t mean to single you out; just that there’s been no small amount of indignation in this comments section over something that may have occurred in a nanosecond and never registered on any of the people involved.

It’s ok! I’m totally fangirl-ing right now. I can cross “Talk to Tom and Lorenzo” off my bucket list. Made my day.

          • Aw, that’s sweet. Have a fabulous day, doll.

The seaming on the top is headed into Anne Hathaway Oscar dress territory. And I agree the color is not right with her skin and hair. But I do kind of like the way the side boob rescues it from bridal land.

i can’t even imagine the headiness of the red carpet at Cannes in Dior Couture. Love her. she is my can-do-no-wrong celebs.

The beautiful fit of this pale pink dress feels like a redemption of Gwynny’s badly-fitted Oscar night frou frou pink number by Calvin Klein. I love the line of it. The her hair and make-up are shockingly bad and aging.

  • Oh, Sally Sparrow. Life is short, and you totally rocked the red hair.

Wow, Baz Lurhman is really short, isn’t he?

That red lipstick gives her “Renee-Zellweger-mouth”, it’s not good…
