It is very surrealist and she doesn’t quite look like herself (did she steal that wig from Mia Wasikowska?), but it is certainly interesting. Are the candles in the first picture a Luhrmann reference to Romeo and Juliet? Okay, I’m done analyzing.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

She looks like Tavi Gevinson’s older sister! Loving the bob though.

    • amariana

A pilgrim at the Spanish mission?

    • alyce1213

What a stunning layout. Just shoes how mainstream magazines have fallen into the bland, mediocre and commercial. This is beautiful, original and imaginative. It’s art.

    • smallgirlsaretrouble

Apart from the last photo you can barely see her – what’s the point of having a big name star if you are going to hide her away (from the rest of the world)

      • charlotte

Well that is in everyone’s head now!

        • smallgirlsaretrouble

          You’re welcome ;)

      • Lori

I wondered the same thing about the fact that you mostly can’t see her in the pictures. She’s kind of on my irrational dislike list these days so my question was whether her modeling abilities were that terrible even by the low standards of celebrity posing. The clothes look good though.

        • BrooklynBomber

I see it the other way: she’s actually a pretty good model because she doesn’t overwhelm; she disappears, and you see the clothes and, in some cases, feel a mood.

          • AnaRoW

That would make sense if this was supposed to be about the clothes. It’s for an article about her with her name splashed across the front page in huge letters. She’s not supposed to disappear.

What I do like is that, in the pictures I can see her, she looks her age instead of like a 15 year old girl playing dress-up.

      • alyce1213

I, for one, have seen enough magazine/poster closeups and blah red carpet appearances of this girl to last a lifetime, so I appreciate a different view, even if her recently ubiquitous face is not the star of the picture. I also assume the magazine pages are larger than the shots here, so maybe she’s more identifiable in print.

        • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

She is infinitely more interesting here, in this context, no?

          • alyce1213

            Yes indeed.

      • http://www.facebook.com/meredith.bradbury.54 Meredith Bradbury

That’s what I thought. Where is she?

    • j_anson

Hmm. The pictures are striking but she’s usually not what’s striking about them, I think.

      • random_poster

Yes. The setting, imagery and clothing are what makes these photos. As such, almost any other woman could have been the model.

    • moppet

After her appearance on Colbert last night, all I can think is “poor girl can’t read.”

        The Happy Banana?

        She looks gorgeous.

    • hughman

That last shot with the red roses is TOTAL Ruby Rhod from “The Fifth Element”.

      • MilaXX

That’s one of my favorite movies.

        • hughman

I have seen it maybe 30 times! LUFF.

          • MilaXX

Lost count. It’s one of those movies I stop and watch every time it’s on.

            • hughman

Me too!! No matter where it is in the movie, if I’m flicking channels – BOOM! DONE!

            • quiltrx

Put me in the “lost count” category too. Oldman AND Willis? I can’t even attempt to not watch.

            • MilaXX

            • LesYeuxHiboux

Not to mention the Gaultier costumes, the Cheb Khaled soundtrack, it’s supergreen!

      • http://twitter.com/vintagesewing Vtg Fashion Library

        Ba-da-boom.

    • MilaXX

I think I like every other shot. Some work and some just feel flat.

    • Belvane

Why oh why didn’t someone wear one of those two McQueens to the Met Gala? They could have been punked up so beautifully.

      • Lesley

i was putting money on it that someone was going to show up in mcqueen spring 2013 and when no one did i was extremely disappointed

    • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

She looks better in these photos than anywhere else I’ve seen her lately. I kind of like the hair.

    • jetpackdino

Beautiful, but… a bit on the boring side, for me. I kinda wonder what could have happened if they’d gotten her to act in these pics instead of just model.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I love that they didn’t see her “as Daisy”. This is much more interesting.

    • frannyprof

      Last photo is stunning.

    • snarkykitten

it’s like something out of a Depeche Mode video

    • PrunellaV

Bravo! Nothing like a good, old-time bizarre fashion spread.

    • demidaemon

I wish she would appropriate the hair, because it works on her like gangbusters.

    • formerlyAnon

They picked some stunning clothes and featured them beautifully.

Though I’ve taken against her after seeing Gatsby. She underwhelmed (to be fair, she had company.)

[Sound track really did work and it was very pretty to watch, so I'm not saying don't go.]

    • Anniebet

Obviously when someone who knows what they’re doing styles her. she can look beautiful and high fashion without looking beige.

    • http://www.facebook.com/sueprutton Sue Prutton

why on earth have you not given credits to the stylist in these images?? What artistry…in each example the Carey Mulligan images are so much more interesting and honestly glorious than the runway images….

      • http://twitter.com/ms_smartiepants Beth Mellone

The styling is pretty amazing. The photographer and stylist credits are listed just beneath the cover photo.

    • nannypoo

Well, now we know what she should do with her hair, although I hope she doesn’t embrace the bangs.

    • jw_ny

so…where are the pics of Carey?

      ;)

    • quiltrx

I kind of love that she’s almost unrecognizable in some of these–I bet she had a ball wearing so many ‘out there’ looks.
I like the McQueen lampshade hat shot the best.

    • SewingSiren

I love them all. But the last is my favorite.

    • ankali

Love the black McQueen, really like the D&G, AM BLOWN AWAY by her in that Chanel. LOVE that photo.

    • PastryGoddess

      YES!

      That is all

    • thecitysleeps

This is a gorgeous spread! Beautiful photographs!

    • MejoP

Daughters and I might like the photos if we were vampires, but we’re not. We find them a bit creepy.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Cortney-Dean/100002491593625 Cortney Dean

Who knew I would love her in McQueen so much? She should try it on the RC next time!

    • EEKstl

Stunning, pics and fashion both. How refreshing!

    • embers618

That last photo is how I wish she had done her make-up for the red carpet on the Gatsby poledance, instead of the too-clean look she sported. Not too much, but enough to bring her face into focus and balance the face with the clothes.

    • BuffaloBarbara

The first long white one, the bizarre red sack, and the drag queen Thanksgiving Pageant costume are just… awful.

    • Jessica White

What is this photo-op, Spot the Carey Mulligan?

    • Tatiana Luján

I love this. The clothes are amazing and so are the body expressions.

    • CommenterFormerlyKnownAsR

I’d like them more if I didn’t read stiffness in almost all of them. I get that maybe they were going for a doll-like vibe, but I’m not crazy about it.

    • http://twitter.com/cheeseamberger amber.

Wow. I would have never in my wildest dreams thought that she could have pulled this off. The cover is giving me life. The Chanel is giving me life. The second McQueen is giving me life. Go you, finally not boring me halfway to death.

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

Frankly, I don’t get it. Why are they doing The Great Gatsby” AGAIN? The first time around wasn’t that exciting.

Why did they pick this girl? She could be Gwyneth’s sister. Not too exciting.

    • MK03

      Kiernan Shipka in ten years.

    • Corsetmaker

The only thing I don’t like about these is the placing of the masthead on the cover image. It looks like it’s balancing on her head :) But that aside, I really like these. Great choice of clothing and she poses well.

The last dress, there’s no source but I’m kind of assuming Westwood. But her stays aren’t usually as historical looking as that one. I’m loving how clear the construction is (corset geek!)

    • Vainte

She’s not getting in the way of the clothes, a designers dream. Katy Perry would look amazing in the Balenciaga sans lampshade and choker. And the McQueen. Can’t get Katy out of my head since the Met Gala…

    • DamH

this is a drop-dead valentino gal

    • http://twitter.com/kitchenflails Cassidy Olsen

From the dresses to the styling and the Spanish mission theme, this looks EXACTLY like Lana Del Rey’s shoot for L’Officiel Paris in March (Lana wore that exact white Valentino and the Dolce). The photos are good, but I’m really disappointed by the blatant rip-off. I also agree that Carey gets pretty lost in the clothes.

    • Pennymac

I Love this; I declare my undying love for FLAUNT yet again.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

FABULOUS. I especially love her in the McQueen pieces.

    • librarygrrl64

She was a good sport with Stewart and Colbert recently, but I am already getting Gatsby’d out. And I know it;s just the beginning……

    • http://surelysonsy.blogspot.com/ Jessica | Surely Sonsy

wow. some totally amazing shots in some truly fabulous clothes. love the mcqueens.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

All I can see in that last picture is her thinking “Thorns in m’boobs, thorns in m’boobs, don’t break character!”

    • http://twitter.com/nyazgirl NYAZGIRL

Ugh. I want to LIVE in that short red McQueen dress.

    • shelley514

The Alexander McQueen shit is the freaking bomb! I love everything about both looks. Wish I had the money and the event to wear them. Damn it Damn it Damn it to hell!!!!!!!!!! And I like the modern stark look on Carey Mulligan. Finally she’s not irritating.
