Benedict Cumberbatch at ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Screening

Posted on May 10, 2013

Here you go, Cumberbitches. But be warned, there is judgment to follow.

Benedict Cumberbatch attends ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ New York City Screening in a dark blue suit.

That’s a great tux, but – and we are well aware we’re parting ways with his fans on this one – we’re totally over his whole “artfully disheveled” thing. It’s starting to smack of affectation to us. It’s not that hard to keep your tie straight, dammit.

Also: why doesn’t he just sport the Sherlock ‘do? He flat-out never looks better than when he’s in character and in that character’s costume and yet he always seems to be running away from the look. It’s the Joan Holloway effect.

He also looked amazing in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, in which he also sported floppy man-bangs. That forehead demands hair on it, damnit!

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=539961277 Debbie Hazeleger

There’s too much forehead otherwise, we can’t handle that much magnificent skin on display all at once xD

      • misstressofsylar

he hates the Sherlock hair, that’s why..but yes, that forehead really demands hair..have you seen his Graham Norton interview? he looked so adorable when he was asked what his fans were called and he answered “Cumber-collective”…swoon

        • Claudia

That was adorable! But why did his hair look SO BAD?! It looked like a wig. Was it a wig? And why does he hate Sherlock hair? Is he not a fond of the curlies, because I can empathise.

          • misstressofsylar

again because of the hate of the curls, he slicks it and no one has the guts to tell him it’s terrible. i think i’ve read somewhere that he thinks it makes him look like a girl!

            • MRussell

it makes him look sexy is what it does

            • Supernumerary

              Time for an intervention, clearly.

    • holdstillnow

      Here, here.

    • nannypoo

Proud to be a Cumberbitch. He can do no wrong.

    • StrandedFashionista

*Insert expected rage and disagreement here.*

I’m too tired right now to get properly mad. I haven’t had my morning coffee yet.

    • thecitysleeps

I think his hair looks decent here, but I agree the curls will always be the best. I like the suit though. I see no wrong! /cumberbitch

      • gabbilevy

I would love to see him sport his natural ginge. He looks good with the dark brown, particularly with the Sherlockian curls, but it doesn’t seem to suit him as well as that gorgeous auburn would :) /also Cumberbitch.

    • StrandedFashionista

It’s also CUMBERBABE now. The Cumberbatch decreed it thus.

      • misstressofsylar

it’s Cumber-Collective according to the man himself :D

    • MilaXX

He also still has that foundation issue.

      • lovelyivy

That and the bad hair are all I can see.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I prefer this over the slick backed hair from last week. I fully support any and all Cumberbatch, even on his bad days.

      • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

I second you on that one. He makes me go all swoony.

    • Diego!

Nice suit indeed! But too much make up and very strange hair color to my taste.

    • geans

I agree about the Joan Holloway effect. Maybe he doesn’t just go with the look because we ‘Bitches straight-up could not handle it.

    • mimi

he is so gorgeous when he’s all sherlocked up but he’s said before that hates those curls as he finds them too “womanly” for his liking.
      sigh, i don’t care though… (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)

      • Beardslee

If he finds them too womanly then he doesn’t understand their allure AT ALL – like many men I know who have beautiful waves and curls and who cut them off or slick them back. What a waste!

        • shorty j

Seriously. Curly-haired men are where it’s at.

    • random_poster

Sorry, but not working for me. I’ll flip back to the Chris Pine pinstripe post now.

      • IMNAngryLiberal

Yup — don’t get the Cumber-love at all. Don’t like him as Sherlock and don’t see anything even vaguely attractive about him.

      • Ms_Flyover

Yep – do NOT see the appeal. I’ll check back after Star Trek, but I don’t see myself getting all panty-bunched anytime soon.

    • alyce1213

Details: poorly tied tie, boring use of pocket square (may as well be a Kleenex), hair. Makes a big difference.
He’s a very interesting-handsome man, in the vein of Christopher Walken.

    • P.M.

Apparently he’s on the record as saying that the Sherlock hair makes him look like a middle-aged woman…

      • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

He’s wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. So he can just stand there in his wrongness and be wrong. While I gaze adoringly.

        • P.M.

Oh, I agree entirely! If only he would listen to me…

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Skewed tie, hands in pockets, pants in need of hemming, and too much hair product. Try again, Cumberbunny.

      • Sara L.

Aren’t the pants a little too baggy, as well? Something definitely off about them.

        • mmc2315

Yes, after Chris Pine, those pants look baggy! ;-)

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

They wouldn’t seem that way if they had been properly hemmed. Grrrrr

    • http://twitter.com/JoannaCarver Joanna Carver

      Yeah, his hair’s a disaster.

    • heatheradair

maybe i’m just behind the trendy times in menswear, but….when a gentleman this TALL wears a tie that SKINNY, it ends up looking like childs-tie. or shrunken-tie. bigger man needs bigger tie. to my girl-eyes, in any event.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=675517274 Nora Halcyonov Lynnenko Naught

As part of the Cumber Collective, I think he looks great. I don’t know what they mean by “artfully disheveled” because he looks tidy to me.

      • Scimommy

Except for the askew tie, I agree. Also the pants are a tad long.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=675517274 Nora Halcyonov Lynnenko Naught

OH you’re definitely right about the pants. Someone should have let him know about his tie or something, I guess.

    • GorgeousThings

So true. In “Sherlock” mode, he looks like a Greek god, but he does seem to shy away from it. Ben, honey, embrace the Holmes! The Holmes is your friend.

    • http://twitter.com/hmbscully WendyD

I cut him so much slack considering he was still shooting “Sherlock” while doing all the press and premiere stuff in London last week. It’s so obvious he doesn’t like his “Sherlock” hair no matter how many Cumberbabes tell him differently. Not every tall, slim, cheek-boned Brit is a fashion-plate like Matt Smith or Tom Hiddleston.

    • PastryGoddess

That hair is bad. The rest is divine.

    • http://twitter.com/project_pandora Rachel S.

He just looks like a lizard man wearing a suit to me. I don’t get the attraction. However, I can get it a bit when he is playing Sherlock. Benedict, the world is trying to tell you something. Listen.

      • Angela_the_Librarian

I’ve never seen Sherlock but I did see him in a mini series a few weeks ago (19th century aristocrat traveling to Australia to become a governor). He looked reasonably good in that, but I don’t understand the attraction. You said it best, lizard man (or perhaps alien man)

      • MemHey

Pfft. Moriarty is the lizard. Sherlock is the otter! (And Martin Freeman is the hedgehog.)

    • http://profiles.google.com/clairehaley1 Claire Haley

To be honest, I think it’s less of going for an artfully disheveled look and more of him just being clueless about clothes. It’s a shame because if he put in more effort (or had somebody put in more effort on his behalf) I’m sure he could wear the shit out of a suit. Maybe if we’re lucky, Chris Pine will rub off on him a little.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Oh, you poor thing. Come over here and let mama fix your tie.

    • VioletFem

I don’t think he’s trying to be artfully disheveled. I think he’s just disheveled at times.

    • snarkykitten

He looks like a wax figurine.

    • JP

I’ve always liked this suit on him, but I totally agree about the hair. He can do the slicked-back thing, but only when it’s shorter. That said, it looks better here than it did at the London premiere.

    • ashtangajunkie

Ah! He’s Sherlocke Holmes. I had no idea and never thought to google him, I guess (weird). Pretty eyes, but I’m with the kittens who are flipping back to look at Chris Pine in pinstripes.

    • http://twitter.com/ashleynalvarez Ashley Alvarez

Totally agree with TLo. I only get the appeal when he’s Sherlock.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

      I like him better blonder.

    • Scimommy

I am such a fan of his acting, find him so attractive, and am so used to looking at him that I forget that he is not “classically handsome”. On the one hand, I am thrilled that he is finally getting this international recognition and getting featured on TLo (who make some really good points about his hair and suit!). On the other, with it comes a barrage of comments comparing him to animals, aliens, and what not. That’s… jarring.

      • julnyes

I have to actively prevent myself from enraged responses to people who insult him or dismiss him. I know I am biased when it comes to Benny, so I just accept that some people are INSANE and feel sorry for them :)

    • crash1212

My first thought – tighten your damn tie! – and I love him. Also, why is he sportin’ that dark hair? Is that his natural color, cuz if it is, he needs to get to a colorist to fix that mess. I do love him…dark hair, loose tie and all.

      • JP

He changes his hair so much for roles, it’s hard to tell what his “own” style is! But in terms of color, he’s a ginger.

      • julnyes

This is his Sherlock color – dark brown that seems black due to the slick hair product I assume.

He is a natural curly red head.

        • Qitkat

Well, that does explain why his pale skin, pale blue eyes and light brows just don’t seem to mesh with this hair color. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him as ginger.

          • julnyes
          • julnyes

my comment with a link seems to have been eaten – just google “gingerbatch” to see his natural (glorious) hair.

            • Qitkat

              Dayum! Magnifique.
[starts online petition for the next Doctor, finally ginger, after all these years]

PS Your link worked. All links go to moderation to be checked, so there’s always a delay.

      • not_Bridget

He’s leaving the press junket & not going on to the LA premiere. Because he’s going back to the UK to finish filming episode 2 of Sherlock’s third series. Therefore, the hair color. Alas, he doesn’t want to use the Sherlock look; the hair product makes the dark brown look black.

If TLo’s only other quibble is the crooked tie, I”m not worried….

    • Kimmu

I can’t even look at him without being disgusted thanks to Star Trek Into Darkness, and this is coming from someone who is a huge Trekkie and generally enjoys Cumberbatch’s work.

But yeah, his looks really do improve with bangs. They help you concentrate more on his eyes and less on his gigantic forehead. The suit also looks pretty uninspired.

    • Christine

Really looks so much better with the curly Sherlock hair.

    • Trey05

Heh. It totally is the Joan Holloway effect because I suspect he runs away from the Sherlock look for the same reason Hendricks runs away from the Joan look — that look is very, very strongly tied to that character, so he avoids it when he’s not on set so people don’t just see “Sherlock” the way Christina Hendricks doesn’t want people to just see “Joan” when she’s off the set. But…yeah. Both could borrow a thing or two from their characters.

I love this guy, but fashion is clearly not his forte. This is the third or fourth time I’ve seen him in that suit. And this is the dude who wore clothes from his boarding school days to events when he was in his early 30s (and admitted on the Sherlock DVD commentary that he still owns and uses socks and towels – with his name written on them – from his school days). This is also the dude who wore a plain white t-shirt and and what looked like my grandpa’s cardigan during the press tour for this movie.

He’s a fantastic actor and he seems like a very nice and charming fellow. But unless he hires someone to help him out, he’s never going to dazzle anyone on the red carpet.

      • Qitkat

I actually like learning that he’s this down to earth.

        • Trey05

Oh, I find it endearing too. It’s just never going to make him a stand-out on the red carpet is all.

      • MemHey

He wears your granddad’s clothes / he looks incredible…

    • RussellH88

He’s the top of my list of my favorite actors who portray Sherlock Holmes while also resembling an Otter.

    • julnyes

I absolutely adore him, so it is difficult for me to be fully objective. I think he looks pretty darn good here (much better than the London premiere), though of course I love it when he lets his curls fly (particularly his natural ginger curls)

    • formerlyAnon

That hair is ruining his looks. Quirky as they are.

    • http://www.facebook.com/tiyuju Yuju Ti

Sherlock’do makes him look a lot younger and cuter, maybe he doesn’t like it. Or maybe he intentionally avoids looking too good in real life, in order to remind people he is just an average Joe?

    • j_anson

      Word.

    • Carla_Charlton

Yes to the Sherlock ‘do! He needs some volume because he has such a narrow head and face so the slicked back look is not good for him.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Meh. He’s never done if for me. I don’t find him to be all that attractive, but I do have to admit that his voice makes me tingly. Also, after Luke Evans and Chris Pine, I have extremely high expectations for boystars in suits/tuxes.

    • http://twitter.com/ImekaSF Akemi

“Also: why doesn’t he just sport the Sherlock ‘do? He flat-out never looks better than when he’s in character and in that character’s costume and yet he always seems to be running away from the look.”

THIS, so much this. Why does he insist on making his hair look as terrible as possible? He’s only actually attractive to me as Sherlock anyway.

    • nopenopenopers

I feel VERY strongly that he would be helped A LOT by a judicious eyebrow tinting.

    • http://www.facebook.com/theweddingdresser Caroline Shaw

“Artfully disheveled” ….you are so right. He is too good looking for this sloppiness !

    • http://www.facebook.com/renate.yerkes Renate Yerkes

well, he prolly don’t wanna go down the path Jeremy Brett went down.

    • http://www.facebook.com/pamela.hunt.796 Pamela Hunt

The only dishevelment I see is the tie. Is there something I’m missing that you scold so heartily? I mean, he’s not as artfully disarrayed as, say, Matt Smith. If only he had his curls…

    • http://bowtiesare.blogspot.com Meg Smitherman

At one point he said he feels like he looks like a woman with his Sherlock hair. I KNOW, he’s a total weirdo, but apparently he feels like a masculine man-man when his forehead is illuminating half the world? Not sure. Also I think he’s actually just hopeless at dressing himself, some people just can’t keep a damn tie straight. Poor guy.

    • Carly Warnock

      Nom nom.

    • MartyBellerMask

How have I never noticed those LIPS before??

    • Imasewsure

Love the suit but I think I’d like lighter color suits on him better. Really want him to do a movie with Nicholas Hoult – it’s that pale British thing I’m sure but I think they would make awesome screen brothers

    • MemHey

It just makes my heart happy seeing him here. Thank you!

    • fursa_saida

seriously, his hair like this is AWFUL and I don’t understand why he doesn’t just leave it curly.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

I’d like to see Cumberbatch in a cummerbund. You know. Just saying.

    • sudden_eyes

I have never, ever seen a photo of him with his tie straight, except when it’s a costume and somebody else clearly tied it for him.

    • https://plus.google.com/108251075533777132179/posts Frank Lithium

Now matter how great his clothes fit, him dying his hair black FREAKS me out; I much prefer him as a blonde.
