  • Can you even dye my eyes to match my gown? Jolly old town!

  • Zac Posen has clearly been looking at pictures of the work of Charles James for inspiration. Its an amazing gown, and she did just right, for keeping the styling simple and letting that gorgeous thing do all the lifting.

  • elemspbee

Dress–no. But Neck up, sporting a vampiric look–yes.

  • BrooklynBomber

So bizarre I can’t decide whether I love it or hate it. It sure is eye-catching, though!

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I feel the same way. It’s gorgeous, and I almost love everything about it, except for that weird satin strip going down the crotch. Which I realize is one of the main focal points of the dress.

    • C. C. Winslow

I love it. The gown looks like a flower turned upside down.

  • halleygee

The view from above, I like it, reminds me of a Georgia O’Keefe painting and is quite lovely. All the other shots, not so much. I somehow don’t think it’s a good thing when your dress only looks good when viewed from a balcony.

    • Sally Brownson

I don’t even know if it was laying right on the model- after all, we only have one picture of her, in the exact moment when it would look the best.

      • Derek_anny

and even then, there’s a noticeable indent shadow.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Well, she is sporting an impressive codpiece.

    • Deedles

      Great minds think alike!

    • gabbilevy

Ruins what would have otherwise been a win for me.

      • flamingoNW

it almost works, but the way it bunches up awkwardly just distracts. Love the way the bodice looks from the back especially, though.

    • CPK1

that is all i can see.

    • anotherkate

THANK YOU. That is the word I was searching for when all I could land on was “V thingy that is vulgar and crotchy.”

    • ballerinawithagun

I’ve been trying to figure out what to call that green thing that is burrowing its way between her thighs. Thank you, codpiece is the best description so far. The dress is so gorgeous except for that thing.

    • Word up!

  • Deedles

When I saw this dress earlier today over at RCFA, my first thought was, “HER DRESS HAS A CODPIECE!!!”

    • scrappy1

      ROFL. Exactly!

    • MoHub

I prefer to think of it as a classic stomacher.

  • decormaven

When it’s displayed just so, I quite like the bodice and how it’s detailed. But when the dress is in motion, it bugs. Pretty color! Stylist shouldn’t have tried to match clutch to the dress, though.

  • Pintrest nails, satiny codpieces, contact lenses, and enough tulle to dress 10 pageant queens…and still I don’t hate it. Weird.

    • I know, me either. By all rights, I should, but somehow, it just kind of works. Not WERQs, but she’s pulling it off.

      Are those contacts?

      • Heather

That, or her pupils are REALLY dilated.

I dunno, this is weird to me. Like Disney Princess on bad drug trip.

      • Yes. Her eyes are a lovely, dark brown. I’m loving what she’s doing here, interesting color, big eyelashes, dramatic all the way.

        • I wish I had the nerve to try fake eyelashes. Alas, I can’t wear contacts and I’m blind as the proverbial bat, so I’m stuck with just mascara.

    • Well, she IS a pageant queen (thank you, Google…).

  • quiltrx

Looks like some of the bodice needs de-boning. Shouldn’t be curving into her cooter like that–from the way she’s holding the clutch, it seems like she’s self-conscious about that whole area.

    • Kimbolina

Yes, it’s really weird. From some angles where you can’t see the entire satin… thing… in the front, it looks like she has somehow managed to put on a leotard over her skirt….

  • Introspective

not sure how to feel about the extra long jockstrap action. like many other dresses we’ve questioned here, this design’s deliberate directing of my eyes to the crotch area is never a good thing.

but its a beautiful color and the fit is impeccable. so I like it with some reservations…

  • hmariec19

I am… unsure about the “loincloth thingy” trailing down the front.

    She has HUGE eyes though.

  • nannypoo

This is beautiful, even with the strange protective layer in front of the crotch. If she had any more eye makeup she wouldn’t be able to see. Luckily she has the handsome companion with the helpful arm.

  • Kate4queen

    I…kind of like it.

    • Tracy_Flick

I kind of like it too. It’s an unusual color, and the shape is dramatic. She is insanely gorgeous.

  • MilaXX

Why ruin a perfectly nice princess dress with a vag shield?

  • Trisha26

The extended bodice situation looks like a fencing outfit!

  • Diego!

Bella Swan renewing her wedding vows comes to Cannes? OMG those eyes!!! O_O The dress is attention catch, but I’m holding my opinion because I can’t make up my mind…

  • TLJezebel

Those two greens do not work well together at all.

  • Amy909

Is she wearing colored contacts?! I just googled her and her eyes are different colors in so many of her pictures! I didn’t know people still wore them. I am South Asian and I know a lot of girls used to wear them. That and dying their hair a light brown or blonde! Kind of sad actually. Anyways, she’s probably just having fun with them and they do match her dress perfectly!

The colored contacts still kind of ruin it for me. Small detail I know, but suddenly, and with the pinterest nails, the whole thing seems kind of cheap. Oh and the green tulle and vag-protector made it look cheap too haha She’s very pretty though!

    • mightbewrong

I dunno, under the right circumstances I think colored contacts can look super cool. It’s gimmicky but really striking.

      • mightbewrong

I love how people downvote this stuff. ‘You like colored contacts? Fuck THAT opinion.’

        • marlie

Agree. I generally downvote things where I think the comment is just patently wrong, off topic, inappropriate, or not in the spirit of the fun fashion talk that this blog represents. There have been a couple of times that I’ve been downvoted, and I’ve been like, “Really? What I said was THAT bad?” It’s one step away from “flagging for inappropriate content,” in my book.

        • Amy909

For the record, I didn’t downvote you =) I think colored contacts can be super cool–halloween, met gala, editorials, runways, music award shows (thinking of nicki minaj/kesha), teenagers messing around with their looks (this look is really popular in asia with young women)… but in this context it just looks childish and odd bc cannes isn’t really a super costumey occasion and if the internet is right, she is in her early thirties. I also associate it with, from my personal experience, with (south) asian women not happy with the way they look and trying to look more “white”. Don’t want to start a whole conversation on that. Just from my personal experience!

          • mightbewrong

No worries. Actually, before I edited my comment I was asking why you might find it sad, but then I realized that changing your eye color can definitely come from a place of dissatisfaction with your ethnicity. Which IS unfortunate and never really occurred to me. But even though it’s not the case here I see your point about it being ‘costumey,’ especially at Cannes of all places. I guess I’ve just always seen it a bit like dying your hair…and I definitely harbor a small desire to go blue 😉

          • Coolekat

I want to be that silvery purplish blue. The version that looks like a wash.

  • Tatiana Luján

How tacky is it to wear colored eye contact lenses.

  • jjk2277

Her eyes look huge because she’s wearing circle lenses – contact lenses slightly bigger than your own iris, they give you “dolly” eyes. Massively popular across Asia.

    • MoHub

I actually got a ventriloquist’s dummy vibe from the eyes. Very Jerry Mahoney.

    • Coolekat

Thank you for explaining. Most informative.

  • This is dress is so strange. The Vag strip is particularly painful to look at. I can’t deal with exposed crinoline. It’s all so poofy and bad. Just bad.

  • anotherkate

She is beautiful. That dress is weird. I would like it better if that weird “v” on the bodice didn’t go all the way down. It feels vulgar and crotchy.

    • TropiCarla

Agreed on all counts. Her beauty takes this over the top for me.

  • jenno1013

The…godets? in the tulle skirt have the appearance on her of fold marks, like the dress was transported in a box, not on a hanger. It doesn’t look that way on the model, but I really had to study the model to understand why the skirt seemed to change direction halfway down.

  • l_c_ann

I was thinking that Zac got inspired by his favourite cod piec

Now that you’ve explained the eyes, they are attention grabbing but not in a good way.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I really, REALLY love you a lot!

  • Patricia Gillett

The extended strip from the bodice makes this look so overwrought. The clashing shades of green make it worse. Not a fan.

  • alyce1213

It’s quite sad that one bad element sullied this gorgeous gown — what some here have called the “codpiece.” Zac needed to edit and didn’t.
Also, her fake big eye lenses are killing me. I want to them gone. They are creepy. Also, cheesy manicure.

  • Aside from the cute girl (of course I don’t know who that is) there is absolutely nothing I like about this dress. The front reminds me of a giant, old fashioned, belted maxi pad that cam undone and is hanging down the front. I hate the tulle. The color is not appealing to me. I really don’t like the cute girls nails.

  • DTM eyes…how very Hunger Games

  • Millicent

Ach I like it all even the manicure, but if this blog has taught me anything it is that I am no fashionista! I often differ in opinion from the crowd on here. Such is life 🙂

    • Julie Parr

I do too — And, I often disagree with the crowd as well. If T/Lo ever saw me on the street in Philly, they’d probably be horrified by my cocker spaniel hair.

    • Nope, you’re not alone. This whole look has a couple of problems, but all together, I love it.

  • mightbewrong

Whoaa this was fine until we got to the jockstrap.

  • TheAmericaness

The more Zac Posen I’m exposed to, the more worried I am about him judging PR. I also feel mentally molested.

  • E. D.

Too bad about the color of that tulle. I think if it was all one color, I’d like it a lot better.

  • What is that strap hanging down the front? It looks like an unfastened chastity belt. No, dear, the belt goes UNDER the clothing….

  • drdarke

I hate to disagree with you, @kiltdntiltd:disqus , but she looks like she’s wearing Fashion Depends over her dress – either that, or a runway version of a chastity belt.

    • Friendly disagreements are part of what makes life interesting and fun! proceed to disagree! (smiling)

      • drdarke

Fair enough, @kiltdntiltd:disqus – and what’s sad is that I want to like this dress because from the waist up she looks stunning in it. I dunno what happened to the bottom half – though I guess we should be grateful a swan didn’t take up residence between her legs, too!

        • j_anson

Yeah, I had exactly the same reaction – stunning from the waist up, but the bottom half! It looks fine on the shot of the model, where you only see it in full-front angle, but on the actress the way that satin strip bends inward as it falls toward the floor just looks very strange.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I though codpiece when I saw the first picture, but Fashion Depends works, too.

  • Would’ve loved if not for that weird…stripe/crotch…thing.

  • MoHub

Love the Wizard of Oz reference!

  • AmeliaEve

UGH to that crotch-grabbing thing. Extra demerits for the way it just sort of peters out at the hem rather than ending in a more graceful point.

I’d probably like this exotic-green-ballgown-with-pops-of-red a lot if I hadn’t just seen Fan Bing Bing do it so much more beautifully.

  • So many Bad Thoughts regarding the satin part in the front. So many.

  • D’oh. I just wrote that, before I scrolled down. 😛

  • EEKstl

I love the color but the satin codpiece is fugly.

  • marlie

Her face? Just breathtaking. I have no idea who this woman is, but she’s *gorgeous.* The dress… I like the top of it, and I like the back of it, but I hate, hate, HATE that strip of fabric running down the front of the skirt. HATE. It really ruins the dress for me.

It also reminds me of the Charles James gowns from the late ’40s/early 50s. There was no such thing as too much tulle…

  • titaness25

Gaze upon my elongated vajayjay and tremble, mere mortals.

  • Well, everything about the gown except for the codpiece (heh) is awesome. I love every seam and dart in the bodice, I love the tulle, and I love the exaggerated hips. Great tailoring all around. The bodice even fits her right and isn’t squeezing her boobs or sliding off of them!

  • It’s that fucking band down the front. Gross. If Zac had stopped with just a V shaped bodice, even a deep V, this wouldn’t have felt so… stupid.

  • crash1212

I absolutely love everything about this look – except the way that panel seems to be grabbing at areas best not grabbed in a public place. It’s a shame too because other than that – stunning.

    • Same here, the colors are so unusual. It’s such a dramatic look (whoever she is). I love the ruby contrast although perhaps not as a nail color. I just really *really* like this color combination and she is carrying it off.

  • out for a walk

I also instantly thought Charles James, but was disappointed in the result of the inspiration. I love me some Charles James and the skirt here feels awkward, though to be fair I’ve never seen a CJ moving on a human rather than static on a mannequin. The skirt seems undersupported, and I wonder if maybe Zac Posen took inspiration from the outside alone rather than also the crazy understructures…

    • Corsetmaker

Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking. Half-arsed Charles James. The look without the structure, so the look only works for 30 seconds from particular angles.

    • It does look like be got the bodice style correct, but stopped shirt of trying to recreate the mind-bogglingly complex superstructure James was known for. I doubt very many women, famous or not, would be willing to endure it.

  • Sally Brownson

That satin strip in the skirt shouldn’t exist. The rest of the dress is fabulous.

  • Anniebet

Truly beautiful gown ruined by poor construction. Can’t tell if the panel thingy is boned, but it looks like it got broke in the limo. She’s lovely, her jewels are too, but she’ll be remembered for the satin crotch cuddler.

  • Donna Tabor

Wow. Everything but the weird crotch indent is gorgeous. That color… it just brings out her eyes perfectly.

  • barbarienne

I’m a little confused by the crotch on this gown…probably because there seems to be a crotch on a gown.

Other than that, it’s gorgeous. Love the color, love the floaty parts of the skirt. Love the seaming on the bodice. I even love the little hip-flaps.

    • conniemd

The continuation of the crotch with the green silk to the hem, SHOULD have relieved the crotch look, but in most of the shots it looks like the bodice stops at the crotch, perhaps less of a narrowing down with a wider band would have improved the construction. Other than that it’s a beautiful gown.

  • Corsetmaker

    Charles James is exactly it!

  • Corsetmaker

I love the colour, I love the bodice shape, and I like tulle. But I wish they’d committed to the skirt a bit more. At first I thought it was supposed to look like a straight gown with tulle coming from the side panniers which done properly would’ve been very Charles James! But instead it’s just a tulle skirt with a satin strip, which looks like a cop-out to me.

  • Crystal

She’s beautiful. The sides of the dress are odd.

  • Ediths_Head

    Ho, ho, ho. Green Giant!

On the other hand, the belly/crotch thingy and the scaly nails say reptile.

    Which is it?

    • demidaemon

      The answer is always both.

  • amaranth16

The color is otherworldly-beautiful, but what’s with the “have you met my ladyparts?!?!” scoop?

  • jmorino08

Is that a cod piece? I’m mean, obviously it’s not a cod piece. But it definitely is a cod piece.

  • Should never have extended that front panel to the freakin’ floor. The original would’ve been perfectly striking.

  • Ridiculously eye catching, and honestly, for once I think the makeup is doing a fabulous job of too much being just the right amount.

  • pookiesmom

I just can’t with the satin elephant trunk/penis. It’s otherwise a beautifully striking look, but no. No green satin penises for me, please.

  • LaSylphide

    Chastity belt?

  • ankali

No. It looks like Zac tried to do Gaultier, and ended up just making a mess. Pretty colors, though.

  • what a stark raving beauty! i love the gown, so fairy fantasy and naughty at the same time. and it’s my color!

  • Nicole

“Posen” is misspelled in the headline!

  • Very weird the way it bunches up and looks round across and down the abdomen. The runway model looks the same but not as bad. It probably got worse sitting down in the car.

  • demidaemon

I hate the shape of the bodice and the way the skirt is attcahed to it. It’s very…crochtacular.

  • mmc2315

I can’t stop staring at her face! That skin! Those eyebrows! Those anime eyes! Wow!

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I love you now. I am not kidding.

  • Sweetvegan

That bodice is amazing. Both the front & back.

  • tereliz

I SOSOSOSO wanted to love this dress but the way that bodice detail ends so far south… I can’t! I’m sorry! It is a beautiful color, at least. The clutch is a little too matchy, though, isn’t it?

  • Silky green penis is LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG.

  • librarygrrl64

At first glance, I kind of hated it, but on further viewing, I kind of love it. The bodice looks like a clever takeoff on a circa 16th-18th-century bodice/stomacher. It’s kind of cool. I think her posing is what turned me off at first, because each subsequent shot (including the runway one) was an improvement.

  • Erica_Vuitton

It’s beautiful on the runway love the sea foam color but clearly the design doesn’t translate to real life especially when real life includes stairs… wow yes crotchtacular. If there ever was a dress that needed the TLo Celebrity Trailer Transit Program this is it.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

The greens don’t match so I just can’t with this dress!

  • I can not stand those contact lenses.
