Amy Poehler in Catherine Malandrino

Posted on May 23, 2013

Wow. Nicely done, Amy. Mostly.

Amy Poehler attends the 2013 Gracie Awards Gala in a Catherine Malandrino dress.

Catherine Malandrino Illusion Dress with Mesh & Cutouts

Is that an “Attagirl” or what? Like her cohort Tina Fey, Amy’s had a rough time acclimating to the idea of the red carpet and spent years getting it either a little bit wrong or disastrously wrong. She’s shown a marked improvement in the last year or two, and this dress might just be our favorite Amy Poehler look yet. We have yet to see her in a perfectly fitted garment, however, and this one’s too tight in the bust, unfortunately. Also, we are so not loving the mid ’90s riot grrrl hair.

But cute dress! More of this, Miss Amy! Positive reinforcement!

I havent’ read Gray’s Anatomy, but I’m pretty sure that’s not where boobs are supposed to go. Pretty dress though. I can even sign off on the sheer part.

    • lexilexi

Sorry, TLo, I love Amy, but don’t like anything about this look.

      • Mismarker

Agreed. I can hear her boobies crying for help. She looks better than this even in her doofiest Leslie Knope pantsuit on Parks and Rec.

      • Aniela Marie Perry

I feel that even if it did fit in the bust it still wouldn’t be doing her shape any favors.

    • twigg

      Her poor boobs :(

    • Kristina Uriegas-Reyes

I’m confused how that’s 90’s riot grrl hair..

      • Tatiana Luján

It’s like Drew Barrymore in her 20s hair.

        • Kristina Uriegas-Reyes

Ah, I guess so, I just thought Amy wore her hair like that all the time.

        • Coolekat

          Meg Ryan Sally Harry days

      • Mismarker

I’m not seeing it either. Maybe if she had micro bangs.

      • dschubba

I can only guess that they’re thinking of Courtney circa Celebrity Skin (which is not terribly representative of that movement).

        • Kristina Uriegas-Reyes

Ah I guess, I just thought Amy wore her hair like that all the time.

    • TAGinMO

Hmmm. I…don’t love this. Not nearly as flattering to her shape as some of the getups she wore around Golden Globes time. This seems like a step back to me.

      • Tatiana Luján

        I agree.

      • hyperionic

Agreed. It’s completely destroying her figure. I don’t want to body snark but she looks pregnant in this.

      • Lisa Utter

It’s SO unflattering to her arms. And her makeup is horrendous. If it hadn’t had that sheer yoke on top, it’d be better, but that sleeve is horrible for her dimensions.

    • marlie

Attagirl! She looks really pretty. And I love the dress (though it’s too tight up top).

All it’s missing is a flirty hem. That would make this perfectamundo!

    • mjude

i love the dress. she looks great even tho i do think its a bit tight on top.

    • charlotte

This would have been so awesome without the boob display.

    • Spicytomato1

Definitely one of her better looks. Pretty dress.

    • MilaXX

I think she looks cute. I think the bodice fits fine, but the cap sleeves are a bit tight.

    • bookish

I’m sorry, but after reading Tina Fey’s Bossypants all I can think of now is her quoting Amy saying “I don’t fucking care if you like it!” You’re right though…she looks really cute, but it’s not perfect. I think I’d also like it better without the sheer part.

      • filmcricket

        Right? She’s so awesome.

    • alyce1213

A bit too tight up top, but she is so damn adorable! I love her to death.
Funny she’s standing next to a “sexy hair” logo — maybe that’s why her hair looks like she just had a roll in the hay.

      • dschubba

That reminds me of a Mouserat song.

    • dschubba

This is almost working, but not quite. I can’t tell, but, is Amy’s missing the black panel in the back?

    • aeb1986

      I spy baby heads

      • blueberrypanckae

        baby heads, under mesh …worse.

    • golden_valley

Nobody’s breasts are that close to the neck.

    • Girl_With_a_Pearl

Sorry guys (and Amy), but that diamond pattern is somehow making her look wider than she is. I also think the dress is too tight.

    • filmcricket

I’m kind of the other way around: love the hair, not sure about the dress. It’s too tight, for one thing, and I feel like it both widens and flattens her.

If I could get my bangs to do that I’d have bangs.

    • sagecreek

The 95 lb model has the babyheads, too…maybe they’re airbrushed onto the fabric :)

      • decormaven

Yes. Like those fake tattoo sleeves Howard wears to the Goth bar in The Big Bang Theory.

    • jw_ny

Amy seems so unsure about this look, but she shouldn’t…she looks great!

    • SugarSnap108

Have to disagree. The dress is kind of cute, but it makes her look wider than she is (not sure if it’s the cut, fabric pattern or both), and the cap sleeves are not flattering. Def not what I consider her best look — for me, that was her lady-pants ensemble on the Oscar red carpet. She looked fab.

    • guest2visits

Very pretty – this is my idea of just the right amount of sheer. Love that dress; baby heads or not.

    • conniemd

What happened to the black side panels from the model? Are they gone or is she just a bigger size? The hair doesn’t match the dress. I like her hair, but he dress is geometric and precise and the hair is free for all. Dress needs a sleek hairstyle to work.

    • Bert Keeter

Looks like a huge Chinese straw finger trap!

      • pookiesmom

    • sojourneryouth

She looks quite nice, graded on the curve. Def too tight in the boobular region, and tiny sleeves are usually not the look if you have fuller arms (I am not body snarking–I have the same issue. It’s just an aesthetic thing I’ve noticed). She looks really put together. I don’t even mind the hair, but I’m a child of the Nineties, so I may very well be biased. To me, it suits her kind of offbeat personality.

    • appliquer

It looks very uncomfortable. And shapeless. And the shoes look like granny shoes.

    • PeaceBang

Really? I hate the boxiness of the dress. She’s so adorable in her latest commercial.

    • PrunellaV

Her boobs look like rising dough in this.

    • Qitkat

I don’t like this dress; it is doing weird things to her figure.

    • MK03

I dunno, I think it really blunts her figure.

    • carnush

Very much improved. She gets an A for this. Pretty lipstick too.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

The eternal bane of shift dresses on well-endowed women…boob smush. However, that dress is tres jolie and it looks great on her. Before I even read your blurb I knew you were gonna skewer that hair!

    • ballerinawithagun

Disagree. The sheer are is horrible even on the model. The sleeves really hit Amy at a thick section of her arm (I won’t wear sleeves that hit me right there either) and make her arms look stumpier than they are. I love the black and white fabric! Imagine how elegant the dress would have been with the sleeves in that fabric ending just above the elbow and a square neckline that hits just above the bust. Maybe a skosh shorter or longer, right now it is hitting her knees at an unflattering point.

      I love Amy though.

    • Maya

I like the dress in theory, but it does nothing for her shape and her boobs make me wince.

    • Joey Melliza

hmmmm this is more like girl that’s not your dress — she kinda looks sausagey

    • librarygrrl64

Oh, I love the shorter hair! I’ve been binge-watching old episodes of Arrested Development, and thought, “She would look great with a bob again.”

    • TheAmericaness

Too tight on the top and it’s painful.

    • Candice Booth

Really I kind of love her hair. I guess because I was a 90’s girl

    • kimiakay

Whoa. Babyheads in netting. Even on the model. It does look painful. But a cute dress otherwise, and glad to see her experimenting with other than black.

    • Vera

She looks as if she’s been stuffed into that dress. Not feeling this look at all.
