Zoe Saldana in Balmain

Posted on April 30, 2013

Well it’s different; we’ll give it that.

Zoe Saldana attends the premiere of ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ in Berlin in a Balmain top and skirt paired with Christian Louboutin pumps and EF Collection jewelry.

And hey, she didn’t wear the thigh-highs or leggings or whatever the hell the model’s got on. Plus it’s a little hard for us to get mad at a starlet on red carpet in Balmain giving the Vulcan fingers.

But yeah; this is a little hard to like. We think we’d be fine with everything if it didn’t have the leather back. That’s just a bridge too far for us. We pretty much detest tulip skirts (because nothing says “chic” like a skirt that adds ten pounds to your hips and makes you look like you’re about to squat over a toilet) especially tiny little satin-y ones, but we feel like she gets a bit of a free pass because she’s here to poledance for her sci-fi movie, in which she plays one of the most iconic female sci-fi heroines of all time. You want to wear your crazy alien dress, girl? Go right ahead. Just this once.

  • Nope.

Just…nope. The most disappointing ringleader costume ever.

    • judybrowni

Okay, but at first glance I thought “Zoe Saldana as the King of Siam in The King and I!”

But it looks like I’m the only one.

    • snarkmeister

Yup. I was thinking majorette, but ringleader works too. I just keep expecting to see her twirling a baton here.

  • jmorino08

That skirt and the one Selina Gomez wore yesterday just scream, “Opening Night at Cooch Theater” to me. Are your lady parts really so amazing that you need stage curtains to present them?

    • Barbara Woodruff

You know how much TLo have influenced you when you think you think this kind of thing reflexively. I saw a university student yesterday wearing a tunic with that draping effect in the front worn over tights and thought, “Look, the curtains are going up on her vag.”

    • Introspective

snort. “opening night at cooch theater.” in spite of myself, why do I want to attend??

and zoe, i can’t. not today girl. i dont care what movie youre in. just no.

  • That skirt is the Vulcan death grip.

  • Skirts that length should never have that little fold or whatever in front — they basically form a giant flashing arrow with “VAGINA” under it in big letters.

    • YoungSally

Hell — she’s basically wearing a (assumably larger) version of the entrance drapes.

      • Louise Bryan

Exactly what I was thinking — Oh, look, the curtain is going up!

  • Meg0GayGuys6

Sometimes you guys make me feel like such a prude- Isn’t this a touch to short in the middle there? I think if it came up on the side or something instead of the middle, it’d be better? How does she walk? And when she sits down…

    • Jennifer Coleman

Although highly cracktastic, I think adding the pants/tights/whatever would’ve been beneficial. That skirt gives me the chills, if you know what I mean!

  • Patricia Gillett

Any other red carpet, this would be an OUT but it’s a Star Trek remake and she’s a very good Uhura so I say IN.

  • Conceptual dress mimics an ornate movie theater, with a gilded ceiling and parting curtains: Presenting a movie star for your enjoyment!

  • In that picture where she’s giving the Vulcan greeting, she’s doing her lady blerd thing, so that’s cute. The top does kind of look like something one might wear to the Captain’s Ball on the Enterprise, so I give it that much of an IN, given the event she’s at. And it looks like she might be up on a stage of some kind, so the whole thing probably reads to the cheap seats, so that’s a plus. But I just can’t with that skirt.

  • Violina23

I’d be on board if it was a BIT longer…. just way too short.

    • ali meowmeow

      Agreed. That’s a peplum, not a skirt.

  • It’s weird how distinctive Balmain’s princess seaming often looks to me – I suppose because they make so many pieces that draw attention to that structure. The skirt reminds me of those Balenciaga wrap miniskirts from a while ago that Kenley knocked off during her PR season. I know it’s probably a dress meant to look like pieces, but I bet that top would look a lot more fabulous with skinny leather pants (which I feel like is true of a lot of Balmain pieces – they always need to be toughened up lest they look like millionaire octogenarian looks).

    • ballerinawithagun

It does look fabulous over black pants and boots. Did you miss looking at the model shot? I love the complete ensemble on the model. The only thing I hate is the now standard exposed zipper. They should have continued the gold trim around the zipper. If you are going to make a statement then really make a statement!

      • Oh, I meant without the skirt. I don’t like the tulip skirt.

      • Oh, I meant without the skirt. I don’t like the tulip skirt.

  • The skirt too short where it crosses over her personals. Either way this is just a bit too cray for me. That top has to be hot.

  • I frickin love this! She’s rocking it.. which most couldn’t

  • Really over designed. It needs to lose at least one element, preferably two.

  • Little_Olive

Yes, yes the skirt is awful and too short, etc.

But the top fits wonky -is it no fully zipped at the neck on purpose?- it’s kind of wide and the color of the sequins or beads doesn’t really go with the color of the skirt.

I give her that it’s appropriate for the event.

    • l_c_ann

I wondered if with so many zippers, parts of the top were interchangeable with other, more tasteful and better fit parts

  • MilaXX

I think it needs a few inches but otherwise I like it. I thought everyone looked much better at his stop on the poledance.

  • AwesomeMargie

Beef curtains before the unveiling of beef curtains.

  • YoungSally

This is one case where the leggings are not optional.

  • GorgeousThings

Alien fashion victim is more like it. I would have preferred it with the leggings. It takes it into Khaleesi territory. As it is, it looks like the top half of a ballet costume.

    • The leggings/wader boot whatevers at least make it hygienic for sitting down. I really don’t like the way the pinks of the bodice and skirt clash.

  • Nikko Viquiera

    vajayjay curtains!

  • Deedles

You know, that top reminds me of those cheap sweaters that only have patterns on the front. She could hide snacks in the folds of the skirt!

  • sleepycat

The skirt reminds me of this one part in Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, where one the minor character’s, that is a goddess, vagina swallows the man she is having sex with. So basically this dress is a man eating vagina.

  • Me thinks the title of Fashion Icon has gone to her pretty little head.
Everything she wears lately is designed within an inch of its life.
Also, that ankles crossed posed bugs. Does she have to pee or is she just worried we’ll somehow think she’s bulky???

  • Kathy_Marlow

Ode to Michael Jackson figure skating costume…but she’s almost pulling it off

  • Sobaika

I’m in the minority but… I unabashedly love this.

It’s a teensy bit short though.

    • Im with ya., it’s all about minorities here at TLO-democracy inc.

    • agwee. i think it’s different and “costume-y” fun.

    • jilly_d

Agree, I love it and I’m not ashamed!

    • I like it. This isn’t even just a “red Carpet” it says STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS behind her lol. Come on people, who I’m tired of hearing about lady pants and chic tops.

  • paintedfish

    ugh. just ugh.

  • Judy_S

Live long, prosper, and keep your legs together.

  • shirab

That skirt looks like it would make a better turban.

  • Pants_are_a_must

That skirt is perfect for any visit at the gynecologist.

  • Anniebet

Leggings. Pants. Long underwear. They would have been nice.

  • Tatiana Luján

The color combination makes me feel like she’s ready for Dancing with the Stars, ugh.

  • Hell, I’d wear that to my Star Trek movie premiere any day.

  • It’s cray-cray, but somehow she is making me believe. For a few seconds, at least.

  • I really like the colors on this one. That’s pretty much it. And once again… the large borrowed shoes. I mean COME ON! You have stylists, days to preper for this event, money, borrowed goods… and no one can find you a pair of shoes that fit?

  • jw_ny

I really kind of like this, and typically hate the big puffy tulip and drapey skirts. I’ll agree that the leather is a bridge too far tho. I think it mostly works here because Zoe’s figure can handle a few extra pounds at the hips, and still be proportional. It is a tad short tho…she really needs to be aware of her stance, especially being elevated on that stage 😉 (she appears to be shot from a slight angle below her.) Her legs look amazing.

  • tereliz

While I love the way the outfit references Uhura’s Starfleet uniform and the other costumes of the original series in spirit, there is no other possible venue where it would be appropriate. It doesn’t even look that fun to wear. A too short satin diaper with a big exposed zipper, leather back and underarms, wrist zippers, scratchy sequins. If Zoe is barely pulling it off at a Star Trek movie premiere, no one else should dare risk it anywhere. I really want to like that top, but imagining it with black leather pants still doesn’t seem to be working. The seaming just screams Star Trek uniform, doesn’t it?

    Cute shoes, though.

  • f_yeah_marie

I actually like it; she’s one of the rare few who can pull off such a garment. However, something needs to be done about the middle of the skirt…hopefully she practiced her “I have to pee” pose.

  • Barbara Woodruff

This is one of those outfits where if a Ph.D dress wearer like Zoe Saldana can’t make it work, then no one can. I actually like the fact that the back is black leather. It would be way too costumey without that. It helps that she looks happy and is having fun with it.

  • Lilithcat

I was ready to hate it until I saw it was for a “Star Trek” première. Then I just shrugged and said, oh, what the heck.

    • mmc2315

  • ashtangajunkie

I love this, and I would love it even more if it were a couple of inches longer. I sincerely hope that no one photographed her getting out of the limo.

  • procrastinatrice

I like it. On her. Don’t try it at home.

  • I rather love this- it’s kind of a cheeky nod to the fact that she’s in a sci-fi movie, and the styling of the top reminds me of a glitzy uniform. i don’t have the hatred of the tulip skirt, simply because she’s built like a sexy french fry. If she had any hips or thighs to speak of, maybe it would tread into vulgar- but I think she’s good here. And I love that pink!

  • Frank G

I say in. It helps that she’s model thin and amazingly confident in what she is wearing. WERQ material

  • Those shoes are giving me life. The rest of it is killing me.

  • carnush

I like it better with pants. Love the jewelry, though.

  • steeg of their own

Honestly, the whole thing rocks my socks. It’s cheeky, it’s chic, it’s daring and unconventional and yet she makes it look good. Girl, if you’ve got the body to wear scale mail armor on top and a petal skirt on the bottom, I salute you. I actually really dig this look for her.

  • DaveUWSNYC

Looks like it’s “curtains up!” on the ladybits.

  • l_c_ann

There’s nothing like a black extension cord in a tan, well finished room to say that Balmain didn’t really care about this outfit.

  • lobsterlen

The leather pant/boots finish the look. Without them the skirt is just lady part curtain.

  • BeeBeauNYC

    Curtains up!

  • lizajane1776

I like it, sort of. I am just a bit afraid that she might move and show me something I personally am not interested in seeing.

  • StellaZafella

If the leather matched the red/pink I’d be on board…or even of there were black bitch boots…something to speak to the black leather back and sleeves. But I’ll give it to her…she’s fearless!

  • appliquer

    No. Just no.

  • flamingoNW

I’d like it if the skirt was a little longer…

  • msdamselfly

No, no , no. I get the Star Trek reference from the runway look with the leggings. But without them, it is nowheresville.

  • Kate

That skirt belongs as a hat on a drag queen’s head.

  • Qitkat

So that’s a tulip skirt. Oh, dear, NO. It reminds me of Aladdin crossed with sumo wrestler and makes me shudder. >>x((
Zoe, you’re too awesome to go this route.

  • stubbornthoughts

The top part is interesting, but I think the tulip skirt cheapens it. Besides, it looks like she stepped into a turban and pulled it up to her waist.

    Regardless, she’s adorable, isn’t she?

  • thecitysleeps

I personally think she looks amazing and deserves snaps. Her legs!

  • MyrtleUrkel

The top reminds of early 80’s Michael Jackson.

  • The use of the leather on the back looks like they ran out of the scale fabric, or made the bodice to be worn in a Mardi Gras bal tableau (where all of it would be covered with a huge backpiece anyway).

  • prettybigkitty

    The Wrath of Balmain

  • It actually looks like something you would have seen in the original Star Trek, though, which I think makes it sort of fun. 🙂

  • VicD

Just goes to show, sometimes leggings ARE pants. Either way, she forgot them.

  • Trisha26

Hideous – not quite short enough. And no, Nichelle Nichols plays one of the most iconic sci-fi roles (I wouldn’t call Uhura a heroine) of all time. ZS plays an alternate timeline impostor.

  • Zorkness

  • Imasewsure

She doesn’t deserve a pass, although it’s nice of you guys to give her one. Truly ugly and a waste of many different types of expensive fabrics (which don’t of course, belong together)

  • I really like this except that the skirt is thisclose to showing off all the goods.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

    What the hell.

  • CommentsByKatie

  • I really like it, except I think it’s supposed to be a top, not a dress. It’s nerve-wrackingly short.

  • ConnieBV

You must think very highly of your ladyparts to go and present them behind that Moulin Rouge curtain, but no.

  • another_laura

I love this from the waist-up – it’s for a Star Trek movie, for pete’s sake – but I hate the skirt with the white-hot heat of 1,000 suns.

  • formerlyAnon

The top is too showy to pair with the skirt and vice versa. Though the skirt is just a mistake, as already stated.

Too bad, I was ready to applaud some fierce dragon scale chic, looking at the thumbnail.

  • Melizmatic

I keep wanting to shout out; “Toro, toro!”

    Talk about serving ‘matador realness.’

  • AceOn6

My eyes are burning. Two diaper skirts in a row? Please god, this can’t be a trend

  • I think it’s great. At a Star Trek premiere, wear disco-Romulan fashion. And then put it away forever.

  • Mrs. Julien

    • conniemd

      This. This. My first thought.

    • Stubenville

      The world becomes her gynecologist.

    • demidaemon

You find out whether or not she decided to wear underwear that day and the exact brand she chose.

  • I actually love it !!!! truth be told not everyone can pull off this look off….I think its unexpected…..I think it definitely makes an entrance and I think she looks amazingly hot!!!!! I love the subtlety in terms of hair and makeup….love love love the way they decided to feature the rings…its edgy and blends smoothly with with the dress…love the choice of nail polish..I really love something unconventional and different….again not everyone can pull off that look……

  • musicandmochi

I think I’d be less inclined to vehemently hate if the top at least fit her correctly. The cut of that skirt makes my vagina nervous.

    • librarygrrl64

  • GTrain

  • MGMcD

I like it but only in the context of “Zoe Saldana at Star Trek premiere.” Anyone else at any other event would be a major NO

  • JasmineAM

I love it. I would totally wear this.

  • H2olovngrl

She is working it, I will give her that.

  • librarygrrl64

Wow, talk about your vagina drapes!

  • frederieke

Love the top, hate the skirt, love the shoes. Would look much better with a straight black skirt.

  • capybara_cafe

I want to complain about the top, but I am too busy looking for something to hold up in front of her crotch so she doesn’t flash everyone.

  • I can’t believe I actually like it better with the leggings.

  • Shannon Long

LAWD! I actually kind of like the top in the thumbnail but that skirt…ooof.

I love the jewelry though. And I do love that she’s not afraid to take risks.

  • Stubenville

I think Michael Jackson wore something similar in his Remember the Time video. Different shoes, of course.

  • quiltrx

I like the front of the top…and that’s about it.

  • jackie cohen

I don’t like it …also, I haven’t liked her at all since she was a snotty judge on Project Runway.

  • guest2visits

I actually love the way the model’s wearing it. Without the sleek pants the short tulip skirt looks off-balance.
If the skirt were longer it wouldn’t look so ‘bubbled’ and bunchy; then it would look much more appropriate sans pants.

  • murt

It looks like she’s wearing a shiny pink diaper…..

  • Beverly Kozma

Fashion victim. At least I like the shoes.

  • I love this look. I just wish the opening in the drape of the skirt was either lower or not positioned right at her crotch. Otherwise she looks great!

  • ccm800

touring company of the King and I.

  • I like it from the waist up , and gorgeous shoes. Wish there was more of a skirt. (And Trekkie etiquette gently reminds one that the thumb should be extended when giving the Vulcan salute 😉 ) Zoe’s a knockout no matter what.

  • I just laughed the second I saw this. This is just horrible. So effing horrible.

  • lalahartma
