WERQ: Rita Ora in Saint Laurent

Posted on April 12, 2013

That’s right, Miss Thang! ATTITUDE. Sell it!

You see, when you’re in the WERQ zone, you just don’t have time for full sentences and because you’re so overwhelmed by the beauty and divatude on display, you’re reduced to shouting out catchphrases and snapping your fingers a lot. But look:

Rita Ora attends 4th Annual ELLE Women in Music Celebration in New York City in Saint Laurent.

Saint Laurent Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Caroline Loosen (ELITE)

Can you blame us?

We hate mullet skirts as much as any two fabulously chic queens can, but this whole look is WERQing like gangbusters. You sell the shit out of that off-the-beaten-path chic, girl! YSL SNAPS.

I have a strong dislike for Saint Laurent (particularly the recent F/W), but this really suits her.

    • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

Werq that Carmen Sandiego disguised as a nun drag!

    • Sobaika

Never thought I’d see Rita Ora werqing, but this is a crazy good look on the exact right person.

Wish she didn’t have blue nails though.

    • Sarah

She needs a broomstick and a black cat. For reals.

      • AmandaCathleen

Or just put a buckle on that hat, and she’s all set for Thanksgiving.

      • girliecue

The one and only way a mullet skirt might look good is trailing gracefully off a broomstick as she takes a ride in the night sky

    • http://twitter.com/carnivaltenten Ten Ten

      Rita Ora? A WERQ?

It’s a fashion miracle! Whoever did this deserves a raise. Immediately.

    • A.W.

It’s so nice to see real, classic YSL on the red carpet. Not this Coachella hipster grunge nonsense Hedi keeps turning out.

    • http://twitter.com/EmmyRoseWilson Emily Wilson

      It’s like “sexy pilgrim.”
And now I’m hungry for Thanksgiving dinner

      • http://www.tumblr.com/tumblelog/lastbutnotleast janinedm

i was going to say sexy preacher from Poltergeist. It’s a great look but i cannot unsee the connection.

    • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

Jebus Christ, no. Not buying ‘fashion bitch of the west’. Blue nails are beyond hiddy.

    • Tatiana Luján

I love the way the outfit looks on the runway, but on Rita Ora it looks like a halloween costume.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Is she a witch? Is she a nun? Is she a pilgrim? I just don’t know, but it’s amusing and a far cry better than her usual efforts. Nicely played Ms. Ora.

    • schadenfreudelicious

Rita Ora and Werq in the same phrase is not something one sees often…the outfit works, the nails need to go back to Pinterest immediately…

    • ralish

      No. Just… no.

      • Verascity

Yeah, I’m not buying it either.

    • Alexina04

It’s astonishing how well she’s pulling this off. Just wish the blue talons weren’t there but a well-deserved WERQ nonetheless.

    • gabbilevy

Love this. This is the kind of funky-fresh she should be going for. Also, Janelle Monet could go this direction and it wouldn’t serve her poorly.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Sorry, gentlemen. That sad mullet skirt ruins it for me totally.

      • ConnieBV

Yep. That and the hair. That hair belongs on the business end of a mop.

        • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

It just looks like it’s been fried, right?

    • prettybigkitty

Really? Maybe this would be a WERK on a young Cybil Shepard, but Rita not so much. HATE the blue claws.

    • MelVT

Why won’t they let these poor women visit the ladies’ room before they hit the red carpet? She has got to go SO BAD.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Nope. doesn’t do it for me. For some reason, the dress looks a tad cheap on her. I LOATHE the manicure. Though, from the neck up she looks good… Hair and makeup are good, and I really like the hat.

    • Janet B

She gets a WERQ for the hat alone.

    • AmandaCathleen

I have to admit, I’m not quite getting this one. It looks like a cheap costume to me.

      • In_Stitches

Her relaxed confidence is really selling it, but I get what you’re saying, definitely. The hat looks a bit like a pimp hat from party city.

    • MilaXX

This is her look and her look only. I was beginning to worry since she had a few fashion mishaps, but I like this.

    • sylverlight

No no no no no… Just… NO.
Bow too big, Skirt too mullet-y, Nails too blue, Hat TOO MUCH.
Sorry, just can’t agree w/ you guys this time.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

It’s a little Pilgrim meets Witch, but for some reason I’m not hating it. The nails are a bit scary, but I guess they go along with the witchy vibe.

    • B_C_J

      No, it’s a Halloween costume.

    • http://www.facebook.com/bert.keeter Bert Keeter

      Who stole that WITCHES broom?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000393765005 Garcia Loca

Digging the lovechild of slutty nun and Carmen Sandiego!

    • SewingSiren

This is the best she has ever looked.

    • http://twitter.com/TheMaygoon Meghann

Interesting that this is from the same Saint Laurent collection that produced Angelina’s messianic ensemble. Perhaps they were trying to dress the cast of an upcoming production of The Crucible?

      • Frankie Bow

Seriously, my first thought was Sexy Pilgrim.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

      Butt cape.

    • flamingoNW

      I guess….

    • Anna Vasquez

      Werq that Guy Fawkes-V-for-Vendetta sexiness!

    • Hetha Innis

Wait just a minute. You liked that get-up on RDJ, and now you’re giving Rita a WERQ here? A rare day in T-Lo’s World! And thanks for the Veep tip. Watched last night and LOVED it.

    • Cathy S

The only part of this I like is that hat. Sorry. Not feeling it.

    • rloliveira

I think she looks like a combination of the Wicked Witch of the West and Zorro. This outfit is costume-y.

    • snarkmeister

I *love* the blue nails, actually. I think they add a great pop of much-needed color.

    • Imasewsure

Marlene Dietrich lives in this one. Fun when she gets it right although I too hate the mullet skirt. Love the blue nails here too

    • ampg

Yeah, the blue nails really detract from the WERQ.

    • Pannyx

I was thinking more Carmen Sandiego at a funeral.

      • Jessi03

        Ha, that works, too!

      • notterriblybitter

I was thinking Carmen Sandiego after she came into some money.

    • TSkot

Wait, this isn’t a Halloween costume??

    • decormaven

I think she’s working this look. I just want someone to properly address her hair. It appears over-processed. She’s got the MUA, now for a hair stylist.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sonja-Brisson/1156967466 Sonja Brisson

This is a Wicked Witch/Wicked Halloween costume. TLo, you’re kidding, right?

    • PastryGoddess

Without the shooting flames out of her eyes, this look would be feh at best. She certainly is selling it.

However, I am over that chicken fried hair

    • alyce1213

Shirley, you jest!! This is the black part of Spy vs Spy.
This is all wrong and she looks like a joke. Still.

    • Kathy_Marlow

This, THIS is what the Wicked Witch of the West should have worn in the Oz movie. THISSSSSS!!!!!!

      • Dam_Angel

I hope no one spills water on her.

    • Qitkat

      Cowgirl Madam.

Ya’ll come on down to the Moonlite Bunny Ranch.

    • butterflysunita

Kind of fabulous and ridiculous. The one time where I excuse the mullet skirt. Her attitude sells it.

      • Jacqueline Wessel

Yes fabulous and ridiculous works for me. Love how she’s working the hat.

    • Anne Elise

She is serving up some William Bradford realness. Puritan snaps of RESPECT.

    • formerlyAnon

Love this, love her for doing it. She may be the only woman I’ll ever see to make a success of a mullet skirt which turns into a train.

    • rkdgal

LOVE the outfit, but I just can’t get behind her hair color. Doesn’t work for her complexion AT. ALL.

    • anotherkate

It looks pretty darn cool, but I can’t get on board with the electric blue hooker nails with this ensemble.

    • RebeccaKW

Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? 1700’s Massachusetts.

      • Jessi03

Ok, I just laugh-snorted my coffee. I kinda simultaneously love and hate you now.

    • Aliza Mansolino Gault

Serving up some Cotton Mather realness, girl!

    • shanteUstay

I could see Katherine Hepburn wearing something like this, it has a moment of old timey tomboy starlet the to it loooooove

      • conniemd

Or a broadway musical or dance production. She’d make a perfect partner for Gene Kelly.

    • MissAmynae

BAM! Rockin’ it from head to toe.

in some of these shots, it looks like she and Zoe Saldana could be sisters.

    • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

Witch was my first thought, albeit a very chic one.

    • Coco Cornejo

She looks like she escaped from a poster for Wicked.

    • conniemd

I mentioned she’d make a perfect dance partner for Gene Kelly and it occurred to me that this is not wicked witch or Halloween. It’s a perfect updated female version of a 40’s male in topcoat and tails.

    • Orange Girl

I really disagree with you guys on this one. Disaster from head to toe.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1355527007 Rain Jezek

She looks like a sexy teenage witch. I like it.

    • azil O

      Pilgrim bolero dancer

    • Pamela Hunt

I can’t with the fried platinum hair. Not to mention the dark roots.

    • http://www.facebook.com/agatha.guilluame.7 Agatha Guilluame

She borrowed the look down to the shoe from the runway. Are there no pre-requisites for a WERQ?

    • Trisha26

Nope. She looks like one of the witches from the disastrous Oz the Great and Powerful.

    • AnotherG

Serving up Salem Witch Trial realness! Awesome!

    • thelovelydove

I’m not feeling the blue nails, but this is otherwise fantastic.

    • oldbobbydraper

      the model wore it better.

this girl’s nails, hair and extra long bow really ruin it for me.

    • Carly Warnock

Still prefer it on the model, just cause she has the mysterious thing going on. Rita Ora looks the best I’ve seen here though.

    • Anniebet

Sorry, to me she just looks silly, like a 13 year old trying for a sexy pilgrim Thanksgiving costume. Or maybe Halloween.

    • l_c_ann

I expect bolts of red lightning to shoot out of her eyes at the first opportunity.

    • RedRaven617

The mullet skirts just make me crazy. What a horrible design element for anyone older than 16.

    • http://twitter.com/jalae Janey

I like it but I wish the bow was in the original chiffon like fabric rather than the big hulking wad of fabric it currently is

    • http://twitter.com/deliriousminuet deliriousminuet

Tell me I’m not the only person seeing Vampire Hunter D here.

      • alyce1213

Uh huh. I saw SPY vs SPY from Mad Magazine, but that may be before your time. (Worth it to Google)

    • jetpackdino

Beautiful. Absolutely selling 17th-century portrait perfection here. Respect from me.

    • lrhoff

Not working for me….that skirt is hideous.

    • bellafigura1

Hard to make St. Laurent look trashy … Success!

    • NoGovernmentName

This is a Halloween costume. Do not like.

    • guest2visits

What a totally fun look to wear – she looks amazing, it’s perfect for her.
Who would have thought ‘happy witch’ could be a fashion statement.

    • ccm800

      i do blame. Blech

    • pdquick

All it needs is a pointy hat and a broom.

    • Damien W

Really? It’s a fun costume, but I wouldn’t call it fashion-forward (or even worthy of being WERQed into fabulousness). It’s like someone spliced 3 Judy Garland movies together: The WIcked Witch from Oz, a Harvey Girl, and her jazzy Get Happy outfit from Summer Stock. It’s only fabulous by association.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=783500814 Amelia Pitts

oh fug. no no no. not without a lot of tequila and a shotgun.

    • GTrain

interesting outfit but i don’t think she’s pulling it off

    • Dreamwr8tr

Somehow she manages to pull off the premier piece of the Wicked Broadway fashion show. She’d better enjoy that bottle blond while she can because that’s aging as hell (I thought she was in her early 30s; Wikipedia says she’s 22.)

    • Monabel

      You’re joking, right?
