WERQ: Kiernan Shipka in Chanel

Posted on April 25, 2013

Seriously, the styling for this little chickie is off the charts.

‘Mad Men’ star Kiernan Shipka attends the Chanel Tribeca Film Festival Artists Dinner in New York City.

It takes talent to pull a Chanel dress right off the runway model’s back and, with just some minor touches, make everyone swear it came from the fictional “Chanel for Tweens” collection. The idea of Chanel on a 13-year-old sounds nauseatingly precocious and pretentious, but the reality comes down to, as it always does, the right dress for the right girl with the right styling.

You WERQ that CHANEL, babydiva! Uncle snaps in a Z formation.

I love it! The dress, the styling, the “I don’t need to give bitchface like January Jones” face, all of it.

    • http://twitter.com/Alyssa_T_Robot Alyssa T. Robot

      she so cute!

    • Tatiana Luján

I think boots are to be worn with tights or with pants.
Other than that, I really like how she looks and the little purse is perfect.

      • http://twitter.com/epenthesis Mike B.

Agreed on the boots. Otherwise outstanding–smart to ditch those awkward sleeves.

      • N a

agreeed- don’t like the boots w. this dress. but love her otherwise!

    • gabbilevy

Gurl is more than just a budding fashionista. She’s reached full-blown fashionista status.

    • Nikko Viquiera

I think the best part of this outfit is her pretty smile :)

      • http://twitter.com/ashleynalvarez Ashley Alvarez

EXACTLY. It makes me sad when tweens and teens feel the need to duck lips it up… (ahem chloe m. AHEM.)

        • Nikko Viquiera

Yes! And it’s so refreshing to see a celeb enjoy herself for a change! You’re wearing Chanel at a film festival, would it kill you to smile?

        • Melanie

To be fair, that’s really just sort of Chloe’s face. She can’t help how her lips look.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Flat out perfect. That bright pink bag takes it younger without looking cutesy. Mini-brava!

      • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Exactly! This is how I would dress my 13 year old daughter if; a.) I had one and; b.) I had a boatload of money!

      • Hetha Innis

and it matches the flowers in the background by happenstance, just making for an even more pleasing picture.

        • drdarke

As we speak, January Jones is sticking pins in her Kiernan Shipka doll for effortlessly accomplishing what seems to pass an incredible beauty like Ms. Jones by, every time….

          • Renaissance_Man_ATL

      • kikisayshi

        LOVE the pink bag!

    • Jessi03

      Oh, brava!

    • Dd

A little bit of a poodle hair there, but otherwise PERFECT! I think the fact that she went with a bag with long straps instead of a clutch brought it to a tween level. And it’s pink! So cute!

    • Sunraya

She does look adorable but still – a 13 year old in a dress that costs more than mot families make in a month gets me slightly nauseous. Not her doing, but bothers me nonetheless.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I don’t really like this particular dress, and the purse doesn’t “go” to me, but there’s no denying that she looks adorable and chic and age-appropriate. Plus, she has a *gorgeous* smile. I don’t think I’m ever going to like booties, though.

      • Meg0GayGuys6

When I first saw it, I thought the same about the purse. But when I tried picturing this look with the same purse, but black, I thought it may have looked too mature. I think the pink makes it seem like she’s still a young girl playing dress up which made me come around to the purse. Dress up in Chanel, but still dress up. :)

      • Little_Olive

        Yes to everything!

    • kipper

I was so ready to go ” NO CHANEL ON A 13 YO, ever ! ” , but rules are made to be broken, this is fantastic.

      • kipper

but lets do draw the line at 12….

    • MilaXX

I find myself wanting to yell. ” Strangé, strangé!” She is that good.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

Kiernan or her mother or her stylist are doing a bang-up job. Brava precious!

      • Agent Sculder

I think it’s her mother. Her family is LOADED, and from an article I read about Kiernan once, I think she mentioned her mom is heavily involved in what she wears.

    • LaSylphide

From the feet up is so great, I can even forgive the stoopid booties.

    • N a

this left me wondering if the runway model was the same size as a 13 year old…

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

        Pretty much, yep.

      • Heather

The runway model might actually BE 13.

    • teensmom99

Sorry, not loving it. And daughter and her friends would NEVER wear anything like this (well, at least from the ankles up). I like her elegance and the way she doesn’t dress like all the other girls but the past 2 looks have just been too “The World of Henry Orient” for me & not in the least the way actual kids dress. Not saying that teens are necessarily style arbiters but this looks more like what you’d find in the kid’s department and not in the junior’s dept.

    • alyce1213

It doesn’t get better than this. Perfect little Chanel dress, adorable booties, sweet pink shoulder bag on a lovely young lady.
Does she realize she’s a style icon at her tender age?

    • sleepycat

Not 100% behind the dress, BUT she looks amazing. Good job

    • nannypoo

    • barbarienne

Am I the only person who kind of hopes that in a couple of years she goes through a rebellion phase? (Preferably by choice, not from getting strung out.)

I am apparently all anti-perfection today.

    • shirab

Does she color her hair? Does everyone of every age nowadays? Seems like the youngsters should be allowed to wear their natural color–why overprocess so soon?

      • http://www.facebook.com/denise.plank.1 Denise Plank

They might lighten her up to emphasize the Betty connection, but I have similar hair color and black brows, and it is natural.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

They probably wanted her to be blond like Betty. My own mother started coloring my hair at 13 because she hated my natural dishwater blond color. But she was always careful to keep my roots done so no one would know. I didn’t seem to have a choice in the matter.

    • another_laura

Ditch the booties but seriously, that is adorable on her.

    • http://stylishsass.blogspot.com/ Terri Smith

      I am not worthy.

    • decormaven

Great look, and the purse is a nice pop of color. Well-played.

    • Lily Shield

Does no one else notice what looks a lot like self-cutting wounds on her right leg?!

      • P M

        um, where???

        • Lily Shield

Right side of right leg… visible in first and last pictures. I don’t mean to start rumors in any way, but it jumped out at me and alarmed me! Am I crazy?

        • Guest

          Am I crazy?

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Anna Wintour is going to call her the *second* she turns 18. Maybe for a cover shoot. Heck, maybe to take over for her.

    • Pants_are_a_must

Good lord. That is unbelievably well done. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a consistently well dressed baby fashionista. She puts her older lady colleagues on Mad Men to shame.

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Seriously. January and Christina need to fire their stylists and hire whoever styles Kiernan. I mean, don’t JJ and CH realize that they’re being shown up by a little girl EVERY TIME they go to an event?

        • Celandine1

Christina needs to hire whoever styled her in the Johnnie Walker commercials, she looks fantastic in those.

        • Isabel

Kiernan’s stylist is the bomb. He/she needs to be recognized! Maybe a tv show?

    • mmc2315

VERY cute. I dislike the booties, but I understand that’s what the kids are wearing.

    • butterflysunita

Love that her purse matches the flowers in the background!

    • http://twitter.com/Glam_Dixie Glam Dixie

Everything from the ankles up is perfection, but man do I ever hate those booties with this dress. Or maybe I would hate them with everything, it’s hard to tell.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

She’s gorgeous and so age appropriate. I want her and Emma Watson to star in a movie together about sleuths in training with perfect eyebrows.

      • stubbornthoughts

Yes yes yes yes YES. They seriously look like they could be related.

        • CakesOnAPlane

was that a Stefon-style “yesyesyesyesYES” ?? Cause that’s how I read it in my head, and I love it.

      • MikeW_Vegas

The new Nancy drew and her side kick George?

    • Kara Hallead

      girl’s got legendary eyebrows.

    • stubbornthoughts

Speaking as a 28-year old, when I grow up, I want to be just like Kiernan.

    • Dagney

I am so glad she is being styled by people who have a firm grip on appropriate clothing for a young lady. She always looks terrific.

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

This dress has beautiful lines. It’s stunning in a subtle and classy way. I’m impressed with Kiernan and her stylist, if she has one. I like her look better than the runway look, and here’s why: When an armhole is cut in like this, the whole dress needs to show. When it’s peeking underneath a jacket, the shape of the skin–a triangle–looks weird. The designer Daniel of Project Runway did something similar this season. He put a jacket over an armhole/shoulder cut like this and it was just weird.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

Man, she’s so cute, I just want to put her in my pocket. She’s got good people doing her styling.

    • StelledelMare

Now explain to me why it is that there are people twice her age who can’t dress (or be dressed) to save their lives. Please continue to show everyone how it’s done Kiernan.

    • http://twitter.com/chylde chylde

Little chickie poo loves fashion. Janie’s taught her well. I foresee a future in fashion for this girl.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

GET IT GIRL. Bringing the updated retro look of your character. Can I shake your stylist’s hand, Kiernan?

    • CarolinLA

That is the cutest fucking thing I’ve seen in a long while. Triple adorbs.

    • Nonmercisansfacon

      Adorable. Never change Kiernan.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

She looks great. The bag really adds a nice touch to an already fab outfit. What’s weird for me is that I am roughly born in the same year as Sally Draper. When I think back at how I looked back then it was nothing like this. Of course my lovely parents could not afford to clothe me in Chanel, but I probably had no idea who Chanel was anyway. I was too busy playing softball.

      • mhleta

I was born in 1960. My childhood style was AWFUL. The worst of it? Coordinated Danskin separates. Hideous on a prepubescent body! But wait! Then I switched to baggie corduroys, Lacoste shirts buttoned up all the way WITH NO BRA! My mother should have been fined for allowing that. Yeesh.

      • Cheryl

I’m slightly older than Sally; when I was about Kiernan’s age — around 1964 — I wore a Chanel-inspired suit to a high school sorority party when all the other girls were wearing cute little dresses. There’s Chanel, and then there’s Chanel; I don’t think they were making dresses like these when I was a teen. (Although in just a few years, 1966-67, I was wearing cute little mini-dresses too.)

      • mountainFashionista

I greatly prefer 13 year old girls who don’t know about Chanel, but who are into softball. I mean, we’re not kids for that long…

    • carolynmo

I really think we need a TLo interview with Miss Shipka. Please? If we promise to be good kittens? Or bad kittens, whichever you prefer.

    • formerlyAnon

I’m starting to wonder if at some arbitrary age (28? 40?) she’s going don a striped caftan and alternate between it and baggy jeans with stretched out tee shirts for ten years.

    • appliquer

      Snaps for sure!

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

She just nails it every time, doesn’t she?

    • tereliz

I love the way she (Kiernan’s stylist, I guess :p) added a little edge to the dress and pink bag with those scallop-edged booties. ADORABLE.

    • mhleta

Again, classy little lady here. Well played, Miss S.

    • http://www.facebook.com/judy.julian77 Judy Julian

She continues to show her co-stars how its done. Fabulous!

    • RinPauler

The model who is wearing the dress at the Chanel show is Montana Cox, aka the most successful winner from any Top Model series ever. She won Australia’s Next Top Model, and then went on to walk for several prestigious shows such as Chanel & Valentino. I think she is around 16-18 of age, but her baby-face makes her look like a tween. Meanwhile, 99% of models from Tyra’s show are going nowhere and modeled for nobody brands.

    • Anniebet

Someone has taken this young lady and lovingly given her the foundation for style stardom for a long long time. Kudos to the stylist, but a whole string of bravas to Kiernan. She’s perfection on a stick.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=645442822 Sophia Vaccaro

I dunno, like I like this on her, but it confuses me. Maybe she is just more stylish than I was or will ever be, but when I was 13, I didn’t want to dress like this…I wanted to dress like avril lavigne.

      • MilaXX

That would be Willow Smith. I think young ladies like Kiernan and Amandla like dressing like this.

      • formerlyAnon

The same. Except allowing for the times I *really* wanted to dress like Keith Richards or glam David Bowie. Or a generic rock girlfriend, without the tits (since I didn’t have any to speak of) and with a dash of Faye Dunaway.

There are *reasons* why some of us don’t mature into style icons.

      • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

The sad thing is that Avril Lavigne is no longer 13, but dresses like she is.

    • PastryGoddess

There is so much HATELOVE going on with me and Kiernan right now. Whoever is styling her has earned every single penny.

    • gracedarling

Did Kiernan just graduate from BabyWERQ to full-blown WERQ status! Forget that scene in the museum with creepy Glen; today Sally Draper becomes a woman!!

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

    • http://twitter.com/HeckYeahHeckNo KC

She’s way cooler than I am.
But seriously, I am always totally bowled over by how much she looks like a serious hybrid between January Jones and Jon Hamm. For whatever reason I love it when casting gets stuff like this right. I still can’t believe how much Etta looked like Olivia with Peter’s eyes on “Fringe.”

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

This is perfect. She looked lovely in the last post but I thought, a little too mature. This is twee-fect. In fact, it would look kinda dumb on a grownup.

    • bellafigura1

Complete WERQ, but I still stand by my “too mature” comment on the brocade thing from yesterday.

    • Trisha26

Very cute and age-appropriate. Love the pop of color bag and booties too!

    • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

Her stylist needs a raise… and needs to come help me dress myself.

    • http://twitter.com/phreddd F. Eloy Vaughn

      …like breathing.

    • AutumnInNY

Exquisite. She absolutely radiates the perfect combination of youth, beauty and talent. Lovely girl!

    • Brad Watson

    • demidaemon

I love everything here but the shoes. I’m like, “She is too freakin’ adorable…those shoes are so ugly.”

    • sherry905

To those who mentioned this: I don’t know if it’s for every event, but Kiernan’s stylist for the SAG Awards this year was Rachel Zoe. I remember seeing an article and some photos about it on the internet.

      • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

Oh dear god, no. That’s awful; I’m really surprised at her parents! I hope that was just a one-time thing. Rachel Zoe’s influence has been notoriously toxic for some of her clients. Kiernan doesn’t need that shit. At all.

    • Pennymac

    • Alyssa

      Pure perfection.

    • PeaceBang

And the enviably full, shiny hair. She’s a DAWL.

    • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

      Good girl.

    • KSpence

She’s such a pretty little thing.

    • bluefish

She’s becoming a beautiful young teenager. And her speaking voice has deepened and matured in a lovely way. She looks beautiful and comfortable. Makes one happy just to look at her. The bag thing is genius.

    • https://plus.google.com/108251075533777132179/posts Frank Lithium

This girl (and her stylists to be sure) is seriously making all the adults look bad by WERQing her outfits all day everyday.

    • guest2visits

Very pretty; makes me want the dress too.
