Taraji P. Henson in Mary Katrantzou

Posted on April 23, 2013

Oh, Taraji. Classic mistake. You over-patterned.

Taraji P. Henson attends the screening of ‘Mud’ in New York City in a Mary Katrantzou dress paired with Nicholas Kirkwood pumps.

Mary Katrantzou Spring 2013 Starsailor Printed Stretch-jersey Dress

Nicholas Kirkwood Neon Printed Silk-satin Pump

Just because the dress is a wild melange of shapes and colors doesn’t mean all bets are off, dear. What we’re trying to say is, those shoes were definitely a bridge too far. A ten-mile-long flashing neon bridge you can see from space . Matching your nails to them just makes Mr. Jesus cry.

It’s a shame because we think the dress is a lot of fun, but it needed practically invisible shoes paired with it. Matchy would’ve been better than this, and you kittens know how little we love matchy accessories.

Love the dress, actually… but a shoe in just one of the colors from the dress would make this swing HARD!!

    • Sobaika

Yup, especially because she’s pulling off the dress itself.

  • ilikemints

Go home, dress, you are drunk.

    • Sara L.

Don’t you know who I am??

      • Rand Ortega

        FTW.

    • drdarke

You better show some respect to Det. Carter there, @ilikemints:disqus – or she’ll shoot you from across the squadroom through a Plexiglass window!

    • drdarke

I adore Taraji P. Henson on PERSON OF INTEREST – but yeah, the combination of that dress, those shoes and those nails is a Technicolor Yawn in the making.

Don’t worry, Carter – Reese is coming by to kneecap the asshole stylist who said that was a look for you….

      • Sobaika

Yes! More people need to be talking about that show and how great she is on it.

        • poggi

I know. I love that show and her and Michael Emerson and the dog and Caviezel and…

          • fursa_saida

BEAR! Bear deserves an Emmy, I tell you what.

          • poggi

Yes, I love Bear. Thanks for the name. That is seriously a great dog.

        • fursa_saida

THANK GOD, it’s not just me here. (Tumblr and the AVClub are another story.) Taraji P is incredible on it–I pretty much think the whole show would fall apart without Carter–and for the record, she always looks fantastic. Even with better accessorizing, this dress does not do her justice.

          • drdarke

Carter is the show’s Moral Center, @fursa_saida:disqus – and Ms. Henson makes a character who could be hatefully self-righteous beautifully conflicted and very sympathetic. You understand why Reese and Fusco both, in their own ways, want to shield her from the ugliness they’ve spent their lives in….

        • hac51

I initially thought she was one of the weak links in the pilot…now I can’t imagine that show without her.

  • Clueless_Jock

The chartreuse fingernails and shoes balance out the green sleeves, no?

  • schadenfreudelicious

Those seagulls perched on her boobs should be holding a french fry in their mouths just to complete the picture, please send your nails back to Pinterest….

    • Jennifer Coleman

Yeah, the 2 things that immediately shot out of my lips were ‘bird boobs’ and ‘a bridge too far’

  • Patricia Gillett

The good news is, this dress got her cast in the next Tron movie.

  • lrober03

The ‘You Might Also Like’ section directed me to when Bella Heathcote wore almost the exact same dress in December. She paired it with black pumps and looked very nice.

    • ilikemints

I saw that, too! It looks WAY better with the little black cap sleeves, even though I still have some trouble getting on board with pigeon tits.

    • capybara_cafe

Ohhh, it looks a million times better with cap sleeves!

    • MartyBellerMask

My first instinct was to say “lose the sleeves.” Turns out I was right. What a difference!

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I think the sleeves were definitely the first step too far. Then the shoes and nails took it way over the edge. A little bit of yellow like the tips of the gulls’ beaks, but not THAT.

ETA I think the sleeves are reminding me of those terribly inappropriate “Aboriginal” ice dancing costumes that the Russians wore a couple of years ago and that is why I am responding so badly to them.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

the sleeves bother me even more than the shoes.

  • Introspective

Tarajis face and hair are fab. Dress is kinda cray but fits really well. Why for the love of Oprah would she or her gays involve those shoes in this outfit??

  • shopgirl716

The dress is really cute, not feeling the shoes.

  • MilaXX

Agreed. The dress looks great on her but the nails & the shoes are completely wrong.

  • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

The dress is cute and fun though I liked it better with short sleeves (as seen on Bella Heathcote). The long sleeves with the bright white dots are too distracting. I love and covet those shoes but no, not with this dress. The pointy nails are horrific. Please make that trend die a rapid death. Damn you, Pinterest.

  • Chartreusite

I j’adore Mary Katrantzou and love Ms. Henson for trying one of their dresses on. Agree on the shoes; she should’ve definitely went for something solid-colored that pulled out one of the tones from the dress. That being said, can’t blame her as I have been known to rock zebra print, houndstooth, and plaid all in one outfit on any given day when I feel like being loud as hell. And if I had the power/desire to don Mary Katrantzou, I’d probably be inclined to go just as wild if not more.

    • Kate4queen

I’ve tried on a couple of Mary Katranzou dresses and had to pass as they made me look ginormous-it was very sad. I had to settle for a purse and a blouse. :(

      • Chartreusite

        :(

  • pulpytomato

This outfit would have been over-patterned regardless of what shoes she wore. But that’s the fun of Mary K. Might as well go for it!

  • BrooklynBomber

Argghhh the fingernails! Look away! If the dress didn’t have dots on the sleeves, it’d make a difference.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    Is that print postage stamps?

  • marilyn

I thought the runway model in the Bella Heathcote entry looked best of all. Making it strapless gave it a polynesian vibe, that works. When BH wore it in the short-sleeved version and the nondescript shoe, it looked okay too. Perhaps it would have worked here if Taraji had worn some of those black heels with straps and a little black tarp over the top of her foot. (Sorry about the bad description)

  • lexilexi

I think the green sleeves are also a bridge too far… … where did that come from? wouldn’t it have worked better as blue sleeves?

    • elizonthelam

I think it would be a awesome dress without the sleeves. Or if you insist in a different green or blue.

  • random_poster

Too bad her hair and make-up aren’t over the top. If you’re going with Go-Big-or-Go-Home then do it right, dammit!

  • teensmom99

Thus needed simple black pumps but she does look fabulous despite nails & shoes.

  • claudemtl777

Those Mary Katrantzou (Mary k? Mary Kay?) dresses are never soothing for the eye, are they?…I can’t look at them for more than 30 seconds a clip…

  • capybara_cafe

I actually like the shoes better than the dress. The dress gives me a headache.

  • Miss_Led

Really? Because wouldn’t anyone look at that dress and think, “Needs more pattern?”

  • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

I like the shoes, I like the dress, not together. I want to start a campaign to STOP with the pointy fingernails. Stop it.

    • Peeve

Agree with the fingernails. Why is that even a trend? I know they’re all aping Rihanna, but it’s fugly and tacky-looking.

      • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

Following Rihanna or not, ugly is still ugly. Stop doing that to your nails, ladies. Say no to talons!!

  • snarkykitten

there are seagulls perched on her tits. seagulls. perched. on her tits.

    • CakesOnAPlane

That dress is insane. I am only now deciphering the images that make up the pattern. A pelvic bridge dwells an underwater crotch envelope/currency? What?

Also, the dress manages to make the model look low-boobed and non-waisted so there’s no hope for Taraji let alone us regular folks.

  • Kara Hallead

i didn’t see what the big deal was. then i scrolled down…

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

i love love love this in a totally unironic, non-cracked out way. this is ace.

  • http://twitter.com/LizardPeeple Lizard Peeple

A lady should never wear a pattern that could come from a Georgia O’Keefe painting right over her vag.

  • lilyvonschtupp

I’m just glad she’s wearing a half-decent wig or weave for a change

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

The shoes were too much. Otherwise, she looks great. Her bod looks SLAMMIN, in this dress.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Do you think she and Jada are friends? In my head they were sitting, sipping wine and playing in Jada’s closet and she was all, “take those yellow shoes, I already rocked them once and they’ll look great with that crazy dress.” Knowing, of course that they would not.

    • TAGinMO

Frenemies, maybe. I can’t see Jada with friends.

  • TheAmericaness

Native American Scandinavian Slavic Dutch blue plates that hang in my mom’s kitchen with African American throw in the Caribbean so many ways I can PC F this up I almost don’t know where to begin.

  • Peeve

I am officially old. I really don’t like most Mary Katrantzou dresses much. I turn into Phoebe from ‘Friends’ screaming “My eyes, my eyes!”

    • ballerinawithagun

I loved Mary Katranzou when she first appeared, but unfortunately, she seems to be a one trick pony.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002718877231 Bert Keeter

That dress is a perfect example of a trend that has been around past it’s expiration date!

  • http://www.facebook.com/conysoledad Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

Maybe I shouldn’t, but I LOVE those shoes.
I would have to buy suits ans dresses for them, though.

  • quiltrx

Those shoes would be killer with a sexy black dress. And I really like pattern in general, but Mary is usually a bridge too far in general.

    • ankali

Aw, I love Mary. Pilotto, though, is all of the bridges too far.

  • JauntyJohn

Yes, those shoes with a hot black dress or that dress with hot black shoes (or mmmaybe an aqua).

  • Rand Ortega

Her arms look like Dia de Muertos skeleton costumes. The shoes looked better on Jada Pinkett Smith.

I looked at those nails once & didn’t turn to stone. Why tempt fate?

  • Nonmercisansfacon

Is she is that movie ‘Mud’? Because I don’t think I’ve seen her in any new movie save Benjamin Button (not counting Person of interest). Hollywood is really underutilizing her talent.

  • unbornfawn

The Dress OR the Shoes. Never both.

  • demidaemon

This is what visual assault looks like.

  • frederieke

I LOOOOOVE the shoes, but not with that dress.

  • Lisa_Co

Those are the shoes Jada Pinkett Smith wore in February with an expensive beige drawstring pant (and that I now proudly own in pink). But they are far too loud to go with this print dress.

  • kathrineb

I like lots of pattern just not those patterns. Print on the dress is UGLY.

  • carnush

I think it’s funny that there’s a picture of a bridge on her dress.

  • PeggyOC

I like the seagull perched on each boob. I can just hear them saying “mine, mine.”

  • Pennymac

There are not enough words in my vocabulary to describe how ghastly I think this dress is. I am rather fond of the shoes, though.

  • http://twitter.com/connectinglines Me Again

The dress is awesome. But you are right about the accessories.

  • darwin fan

I think the dress would have been more fun if the birds on the front were Blue Footed Boobies … yes they exist. Red Footed one’s too.

  • poggi

While the styling is awful I like the dress even though It looks like the Hoover Dam (or some other engineering dam related marvel) on her hips.

  • stubbornthoughts

Love the dress from the hips up. It gets weird past her lady parts. Are we looking at currency?

    Shoes and nails are atrocious.

  • Heather

Can pointed fingernails please go away?

  • SewingSiren

I like the dress and shoes together alright. And I don’t have a problem making Mr. Jesus cry, but the right to wear day-glo finger nails expires the day you graduate from junior high.

  • l_c_ann

See the Bella Heathcoate link above where she’s wearing the same exact dress, but with very short sleeves. Short sleeves are less glaring.

Hate that the fingernails are multiple colors, heck, not at all fond of much of anything here.

  • guest2visits

I think the dress is supposed to be fun and easy going; but with the jewelry, the nails, the shoes
it feels beyond busy.. don’t like the horizontal line across the waist either.

  • tereliz

Eep. I love those shoes and that dress. At the same time they’re giving me hives.

  • Tracy_Flick

Make the skirt into shorts, grab some click-in shoes, and you have a fairly standard eyeball-searing bike racing ensemble. I can’t unsee “Sponsored by Ivar’s Acres of Clams, and the U.S. Treasury!”

  • samo_samo

She’s so cute. I’m willing to overlook the shoes. As a matter of fact I did until you pointed them out too me. We’ll see far worse.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1582777135 Melanie K. Morgan

I was loving it until I got to the shoes. Which are fabulous, but need Charlize Theron’s white jumpsuit.

  • http://profiles.google.com/melantha.chimera Eileen Duffy

I love that dress. And I love the shoes. But not together.
