Solange Knowles in Alice + Olivia

Posted on April 16, 2013

Okay, Solange. You win. Again.

Solange Knowles at The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in an Alice + Olivia dress.

Alice + Olivia ‘Candice’ Print A-Line Dress

Kate Spade Yellow Silk Floral Print ‘Ila’ Sandal

THAT.

Is just sheer perfection. Miss Lady is belting “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” in her head as she sashays her way through the crowd. Even if you don’t literally want to look like Solange, everyone should feel like she does right here, looking like she does. That is the look of a woman who’s just naturally assuming that people are looking at her. She knows she owns this, top to bottom. And the best part is, it’s effortless. She found the perfect outfit for her and for the setting. All she needs is a big pair of shades, which we have no doubt are in the little bag.

Come to think of it, that bag’s a little weird for an outdoor festival. And we adore the shoes with this look, in this setting, but we reserve the right to not like them when someone gets them wrong. And they will. Also: we salute her ability to walk on grass in platforms.

Dayum, girl. She is just amazing.

    • Sobaika

      PER-FEC-SHUN.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

Wow! This may be the best I’ve ever seen Solange look–love everything about it. She is really pretty under all of the makeup she usually wears.

    • gabbilevy

Go home everybody else. Solange wins Coachella.

      • Andrew Walker

Even more so that she performed with The xx. Dies.

        • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

She did? Love them! Saw them at a small venue recently- amazing.

        • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer
      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

        Absolutely! Love everything about this!

      • drdarke

Gods and Goddesses, yes, @gabbilevy:disqus ! She looks long and delicious – like the lemonade her dress is meant to make us think of.

I would think that outfit wouldn’t work at all – but it’s brilliant, and she wears it wonderfully.

    • lexilexi

Dress is perfect for this occasion … shoes & purse: NO.

    • http://twitter.com/librariansti Christina

Didn’t Mindy Kaling wear this dress in last week’s episode of the Mindy Project?

      • Sobaika

        Indeed.

(I might have gone snooping for it after the episode aired. It might also be priced at 400+ and sold out everywhere.)

      • JoDo11

I thought the same thing. She wore it with a purple sweater, which was…. interesting.

        • http://www.facebook.com/hollydollykins Holly Anne

I thought it looked pretty cute! Suited the environment, anyway. Love the way Solange is rocking it too.

      • Sobaika

A bargain version: Yellow Skater Dress by Dorothy Perkins

Life’s mission is to channel both Solange and Mindy in my day-to-day life.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

      Winning it ALL.

So is it a big contest to see who can look the most ridiculous there? Every picture of someone famous I see, has them looking infinitely worse than any no-name attendee also in the shot. I commend any star who took it upon herself to be cute, stylish, and event appropriate. Class never goes out of style.

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Agree. I know it’s supposed to be hot and crowded, as are all outdoor festivals, but that doesn’t mean that one has to dress like a lunatic. THIS is how you do hot outdoor concert (though personally, I’d change the shoes).

    • clatie

So cute! But her feet are going to huurrrrt!

    • j_anson

It’s an awesome look. The three-D effect in the print does sort of make it look like a section of her body is composed of a tower of lemons, with spaces in between. But whatevs. It’s fun.

    • dorothea_brooke

I never knew I needed a lemon-printed something until just now. And I do. Desperately!

    • carpediva

      She’s glorious. That is all.

    • alyce1213

I adore that dress, but accessorized the way it is, I imagine her at a chic outdoor cafe having lunch.
I think AnnaSophia wins — at Coachella, that is.

      • http://www.facebook.com/isadora.paiva.7 Isadora Paiva

I agree, mostly because AnnaSophia was wearing Chucks. Maybe I’m being a bit of a music festival snob, but to me if you’re wearing heels, it becomes obvious you’re not there to listen to the music jumping up and down, and that’s just wrong. Having said that, I have never been to Coachella, and it seems like, being in California, it’s more accepted for celebrities to dress like it’s a red carpet than in the European festivals, so I might be grading it on unfair standards.

        Still, she does look amazing.

        • Little_Olive

Never been either, but agree. I’d prefer something more… grass (the sitting kind) and dust friendly.

Throw tomatoes at me, I don’t love it.

        • ballerinawithagun

Coachella has morphed into nothing but Hollywood and photographers.

          • alwaysanswerb

People keep saying that, but as someone who goes every year and has never once encountered nary a celebrity nor a throng of photogs, I can’t disagree more.

      • formerlyAnon

I split my vote – Solange wins the photo ops, AnnaSophia wins actual concert-going. Because if you need golf cart transportation and stage side VIP viewing areas, with seating, to be comfortable for a 10-12 hour day of stage-hopping, then you aren’t really doing the festival. (Unless you are injured, disabled or getting way up there in years.)

      • filmcricket

Agreed. This is a stunning get-up, but it’s not festival wear.

    • zenobar

Now THIS is how to wear a wacko print. Desperately loving the lemons.

    • Maev

Smashing – and that’s not a word I often use.

    • Sara__B

She’s a ray of lovely sunshine in a sea of faux-hippie silliness. (I seriously sprained my ankle wearing platforms at an outdoor party in 1972 or so. I hope she stuck to level ground.)

    • http://twitter.com/Mlle_D Donyelle

      That’s confidence

    • DeebaCee

When life hands you lemons…. wear a head turning dress out of it and make everyone swoon

    • LongTall_Sally

She’s adorable, but I would have loved her even more if she had worn flats with that dress.

    • claudemtl777

I wish I were a girl just to wear that dress…that is reeeeeeeeeally nice!

    • Tatiana Luján

I think this would have looked much better with flat shoes.
Love her haircut and clean face.

    • H2olovngrl

      Her legs are gorgeous!

    • jetpackdino

This is how it is done. Love, just love.

    • nannypoo

Great fabric and the dress is adorable on her. I’d like to see a softer bag, maybe a basket-y thing.

    • teensmom99

Can someone remind me who wore that dress recently without looking so good? And acutally, it’s not so hard to wear platforms on grass–a chunky heel is better than a spiky one in this case.

      • teensmom99

Oh it wasn’t on T Lo-it was Mindy on the Mindy Project my 3rd favorite show these days . . .(and I’m as fed up with Mad Men as T Lo are).

      • RebeccaKW

My issue with those shoes at this event, is that her feet will get sweaty and she will slide forward and out the ends. That happens to me, wearing them inside. Or…maybe that’s just my personal problem. :)

        • teensmom99

Solange the Magnificent doesn’t sweat. But I see your point. I actually was worried about uneven ground.

    • carnush

      Lemony fresh and flawless! SNAPS!

    • another_laura

I love this dress and it’s great on her. Probably a little dressy for the situation. HOWEVER, in my head she is too classy to go for a stupid faux hippy thing so she doesn’t even try, she says “ripped jeans and stank boots for you losers, I’m gonna be me and to hell with y’all.”

      • Introspective

This. Times a million. Solo killed it. Truly loving this look and how true to her it feels.

    • thecitysleeps

Yeah, no. Not my thing. But she’s amazing.

    • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

Love her, but the shoes were a bridge too far.

    • MissusBee

The lemons are sharp, the face is the sugar. Delightful.

    • AmeliaEve

Pattern mixing: this is how it’s done. That yellow would wash out a lot of people, but it’s gorgeous with her skin tone. And as usual for her, excellent fit. No wonder that dude in the background can’t stop staring.

    • PastryGoddess

I really want this outfit right now. The shoes are great for this venue. We’d better not see them on the red carpet

    • TSkot

She can really look good when she tames her hair like this.

    • crash1212

      WERQ!

    • Judy P

So here’s the thing. Solange Knowles is on my irrational hate list. I almost always feel like she’s trying too hard. But this is perfection, and she looks amazing here.

      • Lilak

I think Miss Solange has relaxed into her styling lately. You want “trying too hard,” I give you Kate Bosworth, who has managed to look over-determined even in a baggy sweater and the b.f.’s jeans. Comparing them at Coachella, Solange looks more natural, way less conscious of herself (even in heels!) than KB in her little white eyelet shorts set and boots.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

LOVE this. I want that dress. She looks comfortable and stylish at the same time. And those LEGS. Jealous.

    • decormaven

WERQ! That dress is giving me life.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=603005248 Jeff Warhurst

You can tell she has buckets more confidence than her sister, just by the way she dresses. She’s flawless.

    • formerlyAnon

Totally wins the Coachella photo-ops. Hands down.
But to win actual concert-going? She’d better trade those shoes out for a more walkable pair. ‘Cause if you can’t move from stage to stage without a golf cart or aching, [or raw, blistered] feet, you’re not event-appropriate, not at such a dressed down & celeb-ridden event as this one.

      • Vanessa Anderson

This may be true for some but this is Solange, who along with her older sibling, grew up running through Houston parks in high heels as pre-teens every summer as a part of Daddy’s ‘performance bootcamp’. She’s been touring since age 13 and has probably danced on stages across the world in higher platforms than this. See, she was a back up dancer for Destiny’s Child in the early 2000s. Besides, you can’t really decide what’s comfortable for someone else. Your idea of ‘walk-able’ might not be the next person’s. I know girls that are so adjusted to high heels their feet ache in sneakers, so Solange may just be more comfortable dressed like this. I think it’s about time we all accepted the fact that those Knowles girls just weren’t raised to go through life as mere mortals like the rest of us. I think she looks fab.

    • Kathy_Marlow

huge fashion girl-crush on her. I wish I could carry things off as effortless as she does. Beyonce doesn’t have the same way about her that Solange does.

    • http://twitter.com/Lily1129 Lily

I literally had that same exact pattern in a shirt when I was in about 5th grade. Of course, it wasn’t ~in~ at that time. I’m just gonna take this moment to pretend I had fashion foresight.

    • Trisha26

      Simply adorable. Love those shoes!

    • Guest

      Mindy wore

    • Susan Tetterton

Mindy wore this on her show and so did the Dahila character on Suburgatory

    • Tamara Hogan

Shoes = awesome. Dress = awesome. Together? Slightly less awesome.

    • SewingSiren

Okay, now everyone else looks like a slob.

    • Shell

As mama to two cats and a dog respectively named Pineapple, Coconut, and Banana, I can’t help but love this look! This dress is too fab for words.

    • MilaXX

Love that look. In fact I would love that dress for the summer. Solange officially wins best dressed at Coachella. No stankboot for her.

    • erinbinek

I don’t love the shoes at this venue, but they’re better than AnnaSophia’s stankChucks.

    • Nonmercisansfacon

      Rock it gurl.

    • http://twitter.com/lareveuse lareveuse

I think she bought this at Romy & Michelle’s shop.

    • emilochka

I like to imagine she saw pictures of her sister’s new tour costumes and said, “Yeah, I think I’ll just wear a cute sundress and light makeup and look fabulous. I’ll leave the sparkly nipples and LED bodysuits to Bey.”

Not wild about the accessories but the dress struck the right balance between subtle and sexy. I wouldn’t have picked Alice + Olivia for Coachella but it’s playful, so it works. Love the shape and texture of the ‘fro, too. Her hair can sometimes overwhelm her frame but this is perfect for the dress and the venue.

    • ballerinawithagun

Love the shoes. Should have been wedges for this venue. But at Coachella you rarely worry about weather and it is held on a polo ground for heaven’s sake…

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

      Adorable.

    • SRQkitten

Is she seriously from the same genetic pool as The Divine Ms Bey? Really? Or did she just hit the genetic lotto and get all the taste genes in the family?

      srq

    • Chartreusite

Lovelovelovelove the print of both shoes and dress. I now covet a lemon sweater.

      Shutting the house DOWN!

    • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

      Killing it

    • Rand Ortega

That look is so awesomely funky it needs foot spray.

    • quiltrx

I can’t sign off on the shoes…they’re silk, and they’re going to be ruined. And she probably twisted her ankle.

    • Carla_Charlton

Disagree about the shoes–those are not outdoor music festival shoes. She looks great, otherwise.

    • kathrineb

      Wow. Style perfection.
The hair, the dress, the shoes. love it.

    • unbornfawn

      Love the way she looks

    • bellafigura1

      Yet again, she rules.

    • Contralto

      LOVE.HUH.

    • Carly Warnock

      Love those ksny heels!!!

    • Anniebet

Glorious. THIS is what she should always look like. Love the shoes, dress, hair, her, her skin, her eyebrows. Her.

    • MartyBellerMask

      REALLY love this hairstyle.

    • lobsterlen

I shouldn’t do this … compare sisters … but I am not their mom. She is so much hotter, cuter, more stylish than Beyonce.

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

i just want to be her.

    • JuliaInBlack

      *bows the f*ck down*

    • guest2visits

This is so pretty – it fits her beautifully but don’t know if it looks like she should be trudging through the grass in it either.

    • Melizmatic

It never ceases to amaze me how I can utterly adore one sister’s sense of style, and yet totally despise the other’s.

      Werk, Solange.

    • ccm800

      a summer breeze.

    • CatherineRhodes

Having been to Coachella five times, the bag and shoes are ridiculous. However, I guarantee she’s in the celebrity section with a comfy seat and not watching from the grass with all the sweaty plebians.

    • trixietru

She must turn heads in every city in the world. Everything about this woman’s style is refreshing.

    • Iroqhard

Solange, you are fabulous in every way. You are refreshing like a lemon slice in my cool, fizzy drink. Except you wear the lemons. Which sounds ridiculous to us mere mortals. WERQ it!

    • tcbrymn

I saw her that day at the Jessie Ware set and she looked so effortlessly flawless, light, unsweaty, refreshing, and comfortable. Pure perfection!
