Scarlett Johansson for Marie Claire

Posted on April 22, 2013

Miss Scarlett does a little springtime pretty on the cover of Marie Claire. She also does a little springtime pouting and springtime photoshopping.

Scarlett Johansson covers the May 2013 issue of Marie Claire magazine in a Dolce&Gabbana dress photographed by Txema Yeste.

On how she spends her downtime: “I’ve been obsessed with RuPaul’s Drag Race. I love the makeup, I love the hair, I love the looks. That’s been my escape.”

On social media: “All of it drives me crazy. I don’t understand this need to ‘share.’ We almost exploit ourselves in order to feel seen.”

On something a man can’t do around her: “I don’t like jealous behavior. I don’t mind an occasional check-in, but when somebody is passive-aggressively jealous, it’s really unattractive because it shows a sort of insecurity that is…Oh, controlling behavior is awful. Nobody’s going to say they love that.”

Okay, that first quote automatically renders her free from any T Lo criticism.  Besides, we have nothing bad to say about this one.

Lace Dress by Dolce&Gabbana

Coat by Miu Miu. Sweater by Dsquared2.

Jacket, Skirt, and Shorts by Giambattista Valli. Top by Kumi Kookoon.

She’s serving up Deneuve, and that’s perfectly fine with us. She doesn’t have a great history with fashion editorials, but it looks like the solution is to go relatively simple with the looks.  Best she’s looked in a while.

I am on the border of all-out stanning for her, I can’t even lie.

  • Sobaika

The cover for the subscriber issues is a bit funny – I get what they were trying to do but it’s way too static.

    • SassieCassy

      faux pensive

  • marlie

Agree – best she’s looked in a photoshoot in a long time. Hair and makeup are really flattering, and the clothes are pretty. But they really did a number on her head/neck in that first picture.

  • Nikko Viquiera

Her love of RuPaul’s drag race just got her booted out of my hate list! Plus she looks pretty, so yay!

    • Oscar Olalde

You know it was RDJ or Joss Whedon or Clark Gregg (most likely all three) who made her and the rest of the Avengers cast fans of Ru’s show :)…. *sigh* to be a fly on the wall of that RPDR viewing party

  • Deedles

I am so tired of Granny Panties that I just can’t look past them. *sigh* Maybe a nap will fix that.

    • calimon

A very very long nap…. Hopefully before this year’s end!

  • gabbilevy

My favorite was is the last one. The others are lovely, but I have quibbles.

  • Coolekat

Should have photoshopped out that blemish on her right cheek.

    • Melanie

      It’s not a blemish, it’s a mole.

  • snarkykitten

“We almost exploit ourselves in order to feel seen.” says the celebrity with disdain. please.

    • Chartreusite

from what I understand shes fairly private about herself via social media. she seems like the type who separates her life from her work.

    • Kiltdntiltd

      I know. “Glass Houses”, right?

    • Frank_821

you do have a point but then again you have celebs like Ashton Krutcher who went full throttle and felt the need to tell every little detail of of their daily activities. It’s 1 thing to do the pole dance to keep you career goign or advocate a film project, it’s another to lay out your whole life for attention

    • MilaXX

I sorta understand what she’s saying. some celebs make right fools of themselves on social media. Others find the right balance between interacting with fans and telling all their biz

      • JasmineAM

        **cough** Rihanna **cough**

    • TheAmericaness

They asked her about social media. “Please” yourself. lol

  • Chartreusite

luv. her. and she should guest judge on rpdr.

  • MK03

One of us, one of us…gooble gobble gooble gobble…

  • Imasewsure

Yes her love of Miss Ru has made everything else blur for a while. Plus she had a real slutty phase which I also like…Shantay you stay!!

  • Introspective

She sounds quite sensible–damn likable really since shes a Drag Race fan, and she looks pretty good. Better than she often dresses herself all too frequently despite having a great bod and face to work with.

Id call this a win win.

  • annabelle archer

I believe she fancies herself quite the intellectual, so I’m curious as to her feelings on the second cover option I’ve mentally titled “Pretty but dim”.

    • Little_Olive

I don’t know about her fancying herself as particularly smart or not, but I don’t care as long as it’s not the in-your-face “I’m smart too!!”. I hate the fact that women feel the need to chose between pretty/nice/smart (2 out of 3, at most). Who says a sex kitten can’t have a high IQ?

  • imspinningaround

As much as I love the red lace dress cover and the Miu Miu coat, the hoop earring with the dangly charm is so ’90s and I can’t with that.

    • marlie

OMG, you’re so right. I had those earrings and the charms to go with.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Mmm, that second quote is pretty contentious, but considering she’s been playing the game this long, without reaching out through social media, it still stands somehow.

The looks are pretty fab, but a flimsy excuse for a lingerie shot on the cover? Come on, Ms. Scarlett. You can do better.

  • alaskahyoung

For a second I thought it was Adele

    • VicD

EXACTLY! Looks like Adele’s Grammys dress. And coloring, face shape, features, hair … all look like Adele.

  • Julie Chase

That last picture is stunning. Despite Satan’s Diaper.

  • Call me Bee

Yeah–she looks great. But Marie Claire itself just makes me….stabby. It really wants to be a “real” fashion mag like Vogue or even Elle, but it just never gets there. So I generally ignore it.

  •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Completely over lace, but love her in the red D&G.

  • Little_Olive

That red D&G lace dress (and its spinoffs) has become the most boring dress on earth. Please, people. Create something.

  • BrooklynBomber

It IS the best she’s looked in a while, especially the last picture, but they Photoshopped Amanda Seyfried’s right eye where her’s used to be. (Also, the finger to the mouth pose is annoying.)

  • nannypoo

She looks great in 3 of these, but on the cover with the red dress she looks like she might not be able to remember her own name.

  • Trisha26

To me she looks like a “harlot” in every photo. She looks pretty, but there’s the exposed panties, exposed bra, and a come-hitherness – a “selling magazines tactic” that doesn’t register with me. Her OP of social media is correct, but limited, it depends on what you share.

  • Anniebet

Love the last look. The rest are nice, but I’m beginning to wonder if those lips are so big she can’t close her mouth all the way.

  • Sara__B

She’s near the top of my irrational dislike list, but she looks really good on the first cover.

  • ccm800

from HER: “All of it drives me crazy. I don’t understand this need to ‘share.’ We almost exploit ourselves in order to feel seen.” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA-GASP!

  • geeeque

girl’s got the most vacant eyes i’ve ever seen. every cover she’s on those empty windows give me the willies.

  • PeaceBang

I love the first cover. It’s such a shame she looks like her brain fell out on the second cover.

  • bd73

she’s really growing into her looks

  • Contralto

    Lovely girl.

  • Danielle Lisle

I covet that Miu Miu coat. I’d wear it in the dead of August.

  • guest2visits

I thought she brought a lot of life to both lace dresses; and made them much more youthful than they’re usually seen.

  • Frank Lithium

Who, moi? Yes, you, you sexy little minx.
