Pairs Division: Cruise and Kurylenko

Posted on April 02, 2013

In the interests of providing credit where it’s due, we’re going to be nice to Tom after being kind of mean to him yesterday.

Tom Cruise and Olga Kurylenko attend the premiere of ‘Oblivion’ in Moscow, Russia. Olga is wearing an Elie Saab couture dress paired with Christian Louboutin shoes.

HE: Really did put the effort in, we have to say. It’s a shame that the jacket and the pants are both a little long on him, because it’s a beautiful suit that fits him well otherwise. The vest is greatly appreciated. Yes, it’s all a bit Wall Street for a film premiere, but this is really good for Tom. Sometimes he shows up looking like he stopped by on the way to the Home Depot. We’re going to be kind and chalk the hair up to a gust of wind. Score: 8/10.

SHE: Seems to have a talent for wearing potentially overwhelming dresses and making them look delicate, when you look at this and the Stella McCartney she wore yesterday. It’s a really lovely dress and we suspect we wouldn’t love it as much on a different kind of gal. But it’s perfect for her and she looks very old school, Old World pretty. But we still hate the silly putty shoes. Score: 9/10.

Combined Score: 8.5/10. Nicely done, co-stars.  Sure, it would’ve been nice if he’d picked something with maybe a little more oomph to it, but then again, she’s dressed fairly conservatively as well. The both look like they’re attending a royal wedding or something.

I hate that damn dress! The skirt has a life of its own. Ugly.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

If my initial reaction upon seeing Tom Cruise isn’t to Febreze my screen, then I think he’s earned the high marks.

  • gabbilevy

That’s some gust of wind. Love the dress.

  • NCMama

Love the dress, hate the shoes! They look like she’s going barefoot, and has very deformed feet.

  • She looks perfect. I think the shoes work with this dress.

  • Jecca2244

I am a defender of the silly putty shoes IRL because, well, sometimes they are practical. but they are particularly not suited to this dress.

    • VictoriaDiNardo

They are especially good for travel, to avoid packing sooooo many shoes ( always too many anyway ) and can work for day or night.
I do think this dress looks very pretty on her, but I wonder why the runway version looks so much softer, fabric-wise.

    • In real life, I can see where they serve a purpose (and I might even like them), but the stylists – when they have every shoe under creation to choose from – default to them far too often. (And when the stars have entourages of people carting around clothes and accessories for them to wear.)

  • LJCdoc

There are just so very many jokes about his pants/jacket being too long for him.

  • HUUUUUGE improvement for him over yesterday. I still don’t love the suit – it looks a little boxy on him – but he certainly made WAY more of an effort than he did yesterday. She — is GORGEOUS. I LOVE her dress. It’s really beautiful on her, and the hair and makeup suit the look. Hate the shoes, too, though. A pair of strappy silver heels would have been perfect here.

    • I feel like strappy silver sandals would have had the whole look reading a little too Ms. Mitzi’s Ballroom Dance Studio.

      • Hm. Good point. But it might work if the shoe is a little edgier. Maybe. I just know that THESE shoes aren’t doing it for me.

    • Tatiana Luján

Pewter stilettos would have been my choice.

  • PinkySlinky

I think it’s her height- the length of the dress totally compliments her

  • RebeccaKW

I love a pinstripe suit and wingtips. If the fit was better and he didn’t have “Something About Mary” hair, he’d be perfect.

  • Even a Stella McCartney credit wasn’t given, would swear she borrowed it from Magic City wardrobe dept.

    • VictoriaDiNardo

Thank you! I couldn’t place her. ( That show is starting again soon, isn’t it? My husband loves it because he grew up in Miami in those days, and he identifies. ) It does look like something her character would wear.

      • was driving me crazy too then it hit me “VERA!” i think it’s a great show.

        • VictoriaDiNardo

And the sets are amazing. It really captures that Miami feeling.

  • Folk Devil

Business man/mobster suit. She looks pretty, despite the shoes.

  • lobsterlen

I am surprised Tom didn’t stand on the step above her.

    Love her dress. The shoes….ugh.

    • VictoriaDiNardo

My grandfather was shorter than my grandmother, and we have many family photos where, if you look closely, you can see that he’s standing on a brick!

    • Has he finally learned to suck it up about being shorter than his leading ladies? And wives.

      • I think he has always pretended not to mind, then he marries them and berates them for it.

  • Tatiana Luján

I hate pin-striped suits when the stripe is so broad. It makes people (and specially short people) look like gangsters or like a cartoon of a banker.

    • Jen

Amen. I fear they are making a comeback though. *Fingers crossed they don’t*

    • Yes – he looks very boxy – or broad – here.

    • drdarke

Bit it doesn’t look like a cartoon gangster pinstripe, @google-6d18cb54e4f6cf79803def7a8f8bdeee:disqus – it’s actually a nice one that looks elegant if a bit, yeah, bankerish. On Cruise, it actually looks good….

So – are these two a “couple”, or are they co-stars? Intruding Minds Want to Know!

      • Tatiana Luján

I really don’t like it and I think it is too wide, but it could have been much worse and cartoonish.

  • hughman

Too bad for Tom that Gap Kids doesn’t sell hair gel next to the suits.

    • Donna Tabor

      Ooh, that was deliciously mean.

    • Indigo54

    • capybara_cafe

      OUCH, lol

  • CMCH

The skirt of the dress looks so stiff, and I wonder why, because it’s not at all in the runway shot. It’s as if it were starched to a fare-thee-well and doesn’t actually move when she does.

  • Is that frock from the family of the one Maisie whatshername Needlewielder was wearing? If it is, then this is MUCH better.

  • CruiseBride nº3?

  • Tom looks a little like a banker but he put in the work and for a change the guy star looks a dressed as the lady star. I’mma let the scores stand.
*Stupid disqus won’t let me sign in.

    • That’s my thought too… I’m not loving the suit, but at least they look like they’re dressed for the same event.

  • At this point I’m starting to think she may have a mild fetish for stiff, itchy, uncomfortable dresses. I won’t speculate as to Tommy Girl’s fetishes.

  • IAmJ

The dress looks gorgeous on her. Hate the shoes. So close to perfection, Olga.

  • kurylenko nails it again. i even like the shoes. shes so beautiful, i cant get over it.

  • flamingoNW

I love this suit on Cruise. LOVE that dress on her. The shoes, they are tragic. Often I don’t mind them as much as TLo, but in this case *ugh*

  • I love that dress 🙂

  • Her shoes ruin it for me. They so match her skin tone that it looks like she’s got molded plastic, pointy feet.

  • barbarienne

The dress looks softer/drapier on the runway than on her. Is it a slightly different fabric? Has it been starched? Maybe an updraft belling out the skirt?

It looks a touch awkward in photo #2, where it appears to be a ringing bell with her legs as the clapper, but in general I prefer it on her than on the runway. (The bad shoes notwithstanding).

    • CommenterFormerlyKnownAsR

I was distracted by the stiffness of the skirt as well. Too bad, since I love the dress otherwise.

  • amyfromnj

Curious (I really am trying to learn something from this blog). What color shoes whould you wear with this dress? Silver, too matchy? Black to heavy? Would red take away from the dress?

    • Jackie4g

I would like a silver or a pale blue shoe, but admittedly, come from a generation that likes matching accessories. Your question is valid, though. if the neutral (Silly Putty colored) shoes won’t do, what would those in the know choose?

    • Jennifer L.

I think that color is even fine but in a non-patent pump. For me at least, it’s the shiny surface fighting with the ‘nude-for-certain-colored-people’ that is annoying.

      • Tatiana Luján

I agree that patent nude pumps are uglier than nude made in some other material pumps.

    • colleenjanel

I don’t know if it’s the “right” answer, but I would have loved a strappy jewel tone.

  • Kathy_Marlow

She shoulda borrowed the silver pumps Rossum was wearing..

  • cowper

Like the dress, but the skirt length is too long for my taste. If it were shorter by–mmm, 6 inches–I think it would be really cute.

  • so wait what movie are they pole dancing for? i didn’t even know he had one coming out.

  • capybara_cafe

    I LOVE his shoes.

  • SayWTH

Exactly what color is the dress? On my screen on the model it looks like blue fleurchons over a paler blue sheer. On Kurykenko it looks lilac over pink. I don’t care for th shoes she has on, but I am not sure what I would pick for this frock.

    • colleenjanel

On my screen it looks grey. A slightly bluish grey. I don’t see any pink other than what looks like slight skin tone showing through.

  • kmk05

She is exquisite, especially with her posing. He is… a little stumpy. I’m not sure if it’s caused by the stripe width of his suit or what.

    • Chantelle James

Or what, partly. He’s quite short for a male “star” at about 5’7″ (although I thought it was 5’6″). His suit widens him, making him look extra-stumpy.

  • alyce1213

He looks MUCH better. But that’s no gust of wind — it’s product.
I don’t love her dress, so he gets the higher score from me today.
    He: 8.5 She: 7.0

  • theblondette

Soooo is she going to be wife no 4?

    • Chantelle James

If David Miscavige (the leader of Scientology and Tom’s BFF) approves. She’ll have to convert, of course, and I”m sure that David won’t allow anything like what Katie just did, taking Suri away before Suri would go to Scientology school.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

This dress is much prettier than the red one. I love it. I love love love it.

  • Toto Maya

I can’t not be mean to him with that hair.

  • The dress doesn’t look comfortable and she needs a silver shoe. Not digging Tom’s suit either. His hair is terrible.

  • I don’t mind the shoes 🙂 She looks so dainty! 🙂

  • Imasewsure

I think he looks much better than usual and appreciate the suit. Love her dress. It’s a little stiff looking but really chic and pretty and I’m not a huge lace fan

  • PeggyOC

I’m no Tom fan, but I out and out (see what I did there) love his shoes. They’re fabulous and a nice punch of fun with a more conservative suit.

  • Emi

When did Tom get John Edwards’ face?
