Kiernan Shipka at Mad Men Presentation

Posted on April 24, 2013

Remember, the woman who plays her mother showed up at the same event dressed like this.

Kiernan Shipka attends The Paley Center for Media presentation of “Mad Men” season 5 in New York City.

There’s a whole Alex P. Keaton reverse-rebellion thing going on here, isn’t there?

The dress is a little wintery, but who cares – she looks AWESOME! Still adorable and ladylike, with a little bit of “I’m a teenager now” in the shoes. LOVE.

  • charlotte

She is definitely no longer a little girl. Why didn’t I look like that at 13?

    • MK03

Why don’t I look like that NOW??

  • MarissaLG

I would have liked to see her in funkier/younger shoes, but she looks lovely.

    • Fordzo

The shoes are a little too sexy for my taste.

      • marlie

My mom let me wear shoes like this when I was 13 and getting dressed up for something big, with a dress that was an appropriate length, and without any unnecessary or inappropriate skin showing anywhere. SO, the shoes are OK by me, since everything else is age-appropriate.

        • VioletFem

Yeah, I agree that the shoes do not look too “sexy” for her, but they do seem a bit to mature for her. It would have been nice to see a cute pair of younger/funkier shoes.

          • Fordzo

Maybe sexy isn’t the word I was looking for. Mature might be more along the lines of what I intended.

        • IMNAngryLiberal

My mom also let me wear shoes exactly like that (only in white) when I was 12 or 13 for my church confirmation. I would barely walk in them, but I wore them. I really think it it just the fabric of the dress that makes it look a bit mature for her. Besides … she will probably go goth or retro-grunge or whatever the current rebellion look is in a couple of years.

        • Fordzo

I give you props. If I’d tried to wear those at 13, I’d have been falling all over the place. I *might* be able to walk in them now – but only when I’m stone cold sober, and that hardly EVER happens.

          • Sally Brownson

My grandfather actually taught me the correct posture for heels- when I was 11. I think I wore more ridiculous heels when I was 13 than I have at any other age.

          • Fordzo

Well, come on! You can’t stop after that first sentence. Share with the group. (Because the posture I most often achieve in heels is undignified.)

          • Sally Brownson

If you feel your head, there’s a spot where the top joins the sloping part. Basically, where your skull really starts curving down. If you stand like there’s a string pulling that part of your head toward the sky, the rest of your body should kind of naturally fall into the correct posture. It’s a lot easier to explain when you can touch the right part of someone’s head though. Usually the first thing people do when given this advice is lift up their chin, which isn’t right.

        • annrr

My mom let my twin and I wear our first pair of high heals to our confirmation in 7th grade age 12 (in 1980). So I am ok with the heels for special occasions at her age.

    • MishaFoomin

Yes. This. Those shoes are too old for her.

  • Ashley Alvarez

DRESS where from are you dress?!?! want!

    • Krafty_L

I have a vintage dress that looks remarkably similar to this! No label inside; I suspect mine was sewn by hand. Maybe this one is vintage, as well, although several notches above mine.

    • gabbilevy

I am COV-ET-ING that dress so hard. TLO!! Tell us!!

  • Silly Grrl

    Gah, so cute!

  • Jessi03

Oh my goodness, how fabulous is she?

  • Rhonda Shore

  • PastryGoddess

Ms. Shipka is shutting it down! Can we please give this girl babysnaps

    • marlie

      Baby WERQ!

      • charlotte

        Big girl WERQ!

    • Ten Ten

She is adorable. It’s tricky dressing a celeb her age. Love it! Baby WERQ!

  • Sobaika

GORGEOUS… but she looks like she’s attending a wedding.

    • AmeliaEve

How else is she supposed to look? Weddings are about the only formal events that most 13-year-olds ever go to, so what other looks do you expect for somebody her age?

      • Sobaika

The Paley Center panels aren’t exactly formal, which is why I made the comment.

  • commish24

Oh, if this dress were just 10″ shorter….but still fabulous!

  • bookish

Yep, I’m jealous of a 13-year-old’s wardrobe. I would love to just try on that dress.

  • MinaBinaXina

  • Pennymac

Clapping my hands at the awesomeness of Kiernan! WERQ!!!!

  • amaranth16

Damn, that girl knows how to vogue. She looks so grown – in the best possible way.

  • hughman

I am yearning for a black belt but werq.

  • foodycatAlicia

What a stunner. She could have cut the dress off to the knee and gone with more youthful shoes though.

  • MajorBedhead

That girl is just so adorable. And has more fashion sense at 13 than I’ve ever had in my entire life. What a great look.

    • snarkykitten

well you don’t have an army of publicists, stylists, and makeup artists following you…

      • MajorBedhead

That’s sadly, and obviously, true, given the state of my closet.

      • mshesterp

And yet, think just how many celebs who do have all those people following them around get it wrong about 89% of the time?!?

  • zenobar

She looks so much like my 13-yo daughter that I can’t help but squee.

  • Amelia

She is starting to remind me of Emmy Rossum facially.

  • Hannah Prutton

    Girl is perfection.

  • tereliz

I would cut a tiny bitch for this outfit.

  • Chickadeep

Yet another BabyWERQ to add to her ever-growing collection.

  • Glammie

Oh, it’s too old for her, but who cares? It’s awfully cute on her. Kind of like she was hanging around the Mad Men set when she was younger and just *dying* to wear some of Betty’s dresses. Now she finally can.

  • annabelle archer

I know y’all love this girl, and I’m certainly not saying she looks bad in any way, but how is this not a young star dressing a little maturely? Often here Chloe M and Haley S, for examples, are dinged for being dressed by others as of it’s not their own style, or dressing like someone in their 20s, etc. In my opinion, Kiernan is in that same boat here. It’s a lovely dress but it could easily be worn by someone old enough to be (play) her mother.

    • marlie

I wouldn’t consider this too mature. The silhouette is pretty basic, the length – while probably too long on a grownup – is just right for her, and there’s not even a hint of cleavage or anything like that.

I think the problem with babycelebs is that the stylists put them in adult clothing, so they need to find something that can be “aged down.” For the most part, I think Hailee and Chloe M’s people do a good job with that, as do Kiernan’s people. The clothes may be more mature than what the average 13-15 year old wears, but they’re not sexualized or trashy.

When I was 13, I was 5’9″ so I *had* to shop in grown-up stores, and I totally would have worn something like this. And some might argue that the shoes are too sexy, but if pointy-toed shoes were in when I was 13, I also would have worn shoes like this with a similarly modest dress for a “big” event.

      • annabelle archer

I absolutely agree that there is nothing sexy or trashy going here. Kudos to her parents and “people”.
Too me, this is part of their jobs as actresses. I’m not going to expect an average 13-15 year old girl to dress this way with any regularity. I just felt like half the time the Hailee (thank you, I’d originally spelled it wrong) or Chloe posts are filled with comments saying they aren’t dressed their age but those same comments don’t often pop up on Kiernan posts.

        • Adriana_Paula

I think that many of those comments about Hailee or Chloe are more about them wearing self-consciously “fashion-y” looks that are more edgy than they can pull off at such a young age, not necessarily that their clothes are too sexy/trashy.

      • MilaXX

I think the only time I think Chloe is too grown is when her clothes feel a bit too sexy for me. I am one of those who was wearing heels like this at 13 and I have always had a preference for pointy toe shoes. Kiernan’s look here work for me because the hair/makeup & accessories are still very young lady.

    • Fordzo

I agree (I think). It’s not that this is mature in a revealing, sexy way. It just seems old. The heavy material, the dark colors. She looks pretty, but not very young. It doesn’t feel fresh.

  • Mary Nease

babyWERQ with a perfect “and that’s how it’s done, bitches” look on her face

  • Imasewsure

Agreed that younger funkier shoes would have been great but what a cute look for her. Want that dress!!

  • alyce1213

Adorable young woman, I always love what she wears, but this dress is too heavy-looking (especially in April) and too long for her.
I’m glad she always keeps it classy, though.

  • Heidi/FranticButFab

She seems to be making the same graceful transition to adolescence and young adulthood that Emma Watson did. Good for her.

    • Carly Warnock

weird. my bf just remarked on their likeness as well.

  • Kiltdntiltd

    Take that, January.

    • Pants_are_a_must

      January will never understand it.

      • MilaXX

        She’s too busy being “kewl”

  • Lilithcat

Gorgeous dress, but the length gives it a bit too much maturity for her. It could stand to have a few inches off the bottom.

    • Betsy Farmer Hada

I agree. Whack a good 3-5 inches off that hem. For heaven’s sake. I *am* middle-aged, and I’d never wear a dress that long. Looks a little like her mom bought it thinking “you’re growing so much, you need to fit into it for a few years.” Nope.

  • Deborah Lipp

    i WAS THERE!!! Just sayin’.

    • formerlyAnon

Any tidbits it’s appropriate to share, here?

      • Deborah Lipp

It was a lovely event. Paley puts on fancy, sponsored events. The stars were all whisked off to a private reception for top-dollar donors as soon as it ended, so we didn’t get a chance to say hi. I have to say, I’ve been at many Mad Men events over the years, and this one Tuesday, and last night’s, had more paparazzi than I’ve seen before.

  • IraKi

This is a little bit too “grown-up” for me. Nonetheless, she looks lovely and somewhat age-appropriately dressed

  • Joanne Abrams

  • nannypoo

I think it’s too old, too long and too stiff for her. She looks fabulous anyway.

  • Sara Leigh Merrey

Get rid of the stilettos and opt for a lower heel. I really don’t like them on young girls. Yes, my daughter wore them in high school. I didn’t like it then; I don’t like it now. But whatevs. Oh, and take a few inches off the hem. She looks fabulous. These are minor quibbles in the final analysis.

  • ringthing

She looks perfect – how can you not love the cool girl backward glance – but were the Mad MEN at this shindig? I could use a little Hamm/Slattery view about now.

    • PastryGoddess

Jon Hamm, John Slattery, and Vincent Kartheiser were there. I think they all had on grey suits and Jon Hamm looked constipated

  • kerryev

I never woulda thunk of brocade on somebody her age but this is adorable.

  • BrooklynBomber

Wow. I mean, the dress and heels are pretty mature for her, but, just, wow.

  • oldbobbydraper

  • pop_top

Maybe she and January made a deal? I just figured her outfit was “Mad Men inspired.” That’s an early Betty shape.

In any case she looks lovely, and a bit mature, but as others have noted, that’s mostly because of the length.

  • oldbobbydraper

btw here is kiernan the last time she wore red to a mad men event with jon hamm:

  • Tatiana Luján

Aren’t the shoes too mature for her? Not that she doesn’t look lovely.
When did she grow boobs and got a waist? When did she grow up? Man, she’s got more boobs than me.

  • Little_Olive

She looks great, no doubt, but it’s too adult. Especially the shoes.

  • Elena

She is 10 years younger than me, yet she is still prettier and chicer than me. Why?!? Where is her awkward phase?

  • Stella Zawistowski

I love her facial expression in the last photo. She KNOWS she’s a WERQ.

  • Sara Swoboda

She’s never going to have an awkward phase is she?

  • OrigamiRose

    She is amazing.

  • formerlyAnon

  • Jennifer L.

    Want her eyelashes.

  • jw_ny

little girl dressed up in her mother’s shoes…

  • Beth513

She looks AMAZING. Although I wish her heels were a smidge lower, you know age appropriateness and all.

  • thexstarsxalign

She looks like a very teeny adult in those shoes. I covet her dress.

  • Trisha26

Adorable – I would wear that! It would be even better for her if 8 inches shorter with a more youthful shoe.

  • Anniebet

Love looking at this little sweetheart – she has just enough sass to satisfy my penchant for… well, sassy but classy celebs. Her hair and makeup are perfect, and that one eyebrow that won’t quite toe the line is darling. The dress is totally amazing.

  • AmeliaEve

Gorgeous and ladylike. She’s starting to get a little bit of curve and it looks pretty on her.

  • MilaXX

This kid is gonna be a looker.

  • Robin Krug

Bravo. Maybe she’ll take January under her wing . . .

  • Melanie K. Morgan

I love this child. Her facial expressions are adorable.

  • kikisayshi

She is a doll. I hope she stays on the straight and narrow so she can become the Ultimate Ladystar, which we all know is in there, when she grows up.

  • formerlyAnon

On the heels: By age 13, all of the young girls I know are/were either wearing or fighting bitterly for heels that high, and mostly getting them for their “dressed up” events. I think they look a little “old” because they’re a mature pump style. They might be a bit off for a “civilian” early teen, but she’s 13 and spends a significant portion of her life going to mostly adult dress-up events.

    • hotpaprika

Isn’t it sad though that she doesn’t enjoy the perks of being 13? Being silly, fresh and a pre-teen? By age 13 girls do want to become grown ups but this is were boundaries should be introduced, so that they’ll learn that everything should be done at the correct time. You can only be a pre-teen and a teen only once and for such a short time, what a shame that adults don’t protect that more.

So yeah she looks really amazing here but I’d rather seen her look like that in two years or three. They’re no rush here, she’s still a kid.

  • lobsterlen

Anyone else think Christine could have rocked this dress?

  • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

I love this!! I think the dress and shoes are a bit “mature” for her, but they are so pretty!
    I want them for myself.

  • mhleta

    Classy! Atta girl.

  •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

That’s right, Miss Lady, show the grownups how it’s done!

And furthermore: Congrats to her hair and makeup people for getting it EXACTLY RIGHT.

  • Edith Beumer Kemp

I adore this young lady and I wish her nothing but happiness and joy and great roles and whatever awards she wants and all the couture she can stand. Talented, smart and so beautifully age-appropriate.

  • bellafigura1

I’ll depart from the pack — too mature. Brocade, color combination, length, and shoes. It’s too heavy a look for a lovely young girl.

  • marshmallowjane

Kiernan is a beautiful girl, dressing very classy for any age. I’m not loving the shoes, but most of today’s shoes are too pointy for my taste no matter how old the woman is. I don’t like extremely high heels either. I hope that Kiernan continues to blossom in this positive way. I hope the show gives her more air time.

  • editrixie

So this is who Grace Kelly got reincarnated in.

  • TSkot

Too mature for a kid her age. She should follow January’s lead.

  • DoesMonaKnow

Too matronly for her. Nice hair, though.

  • Aniela Marie Perry

    Wow. She is stunning.

  • Judy Julian

She looks fabulous. Needs to give her cast mates lessons in how to dress for the occasion.

  • How to Faint

I’m thinking it’s more of a Freaky Friday reverse thing going on.

  • Swiftlytiltingplanet

I want to BE her! Which is weird in so many ways, not the least of which is that I’ve got 40 years on her. :-)

  • Contralto

She’s lovely and her parents are probably refreshingly sensible people.

  • AutumnInNY

I just love her. All the right moves here. Lovely girl, wonderful actress. Her parents have every reason in the world to be proud.

  • bd73

lovely, but the heel is too high for her age.

  • CatherineRhodes

Alex P. Keaton — I’m sitting at my desk laughing. Also loved what you wrote on January’s post: “This fashion amateur plays my mother?” You take fashion writing to a whole new level.

  • carnush

She is just the cutest. Great look.

  • gillian holroyd

She gets it right *every* time and her cast mates, rarely.

I just find that so interesting.

  • M. H. Leader

Does anyone else find it bizarre that these very young actresses are wearing high-heeled pumps? It adds like 15 or 20 years to their ages…

  • H2olovngrl

Reverse rebellion! Alex P. Keaton! Love it!
