Keira Knightley for Marie Claire UK

Posted on April 05, 2013

Miss Keira does a little dress-wearing.

Keira Knightley covers the May 2013 issue of Marie Claire UK magazine in a Valentino dress photographed by Nathaniel Goldberg.

On how she defines success: “I’m not sure if I can define success. I think if I get to the end of my life having hurt as few people as possible, making sure the people who mean the most to me know they have been loved, I will be happy. Success in work, whatever work, will come and go.”

On coping with fame in Hollywood: “The machine that allows you to make movies, the trade-off [requires] you to sell it. Selling it means making yourself a public figure. You can’t cultivate the mystery. My problem is I like mystery.”

That line about the machine and the trade-off should be required reading for all new or rising stars. Them’s the rules, kids. Now get out there and work that pole.

It’s not the most interesting editorial in the world. We just wanted to feature it because we love that shot of her in the Balenciaga.

Agreed. Love her pose in the Balenciaga.

  • decormaven

Oh my word! Photochopped to a new level- she has no arms in the Chanel shot! Really had to take a second look at it to understand how she was posed. Her hair looks different here- a darker rinse?

    • Lori

Her arms are crossed over her chest, yes? I think it looks a bit odd because the sleeves are so large.

      • RebeccaKW

I agree, it’s a combo or crossed arms and giant poofy sleeves. Tyra would not be impressed. (Although I love the image, minus the missing arms)

        • Lori

Yeah, I’m not sure why they chose that pose with those sleeves, because it is odd looking.

  • annabelle archer

One of the few actresses that I like *more* because of her interviews. That Balenciaga is so dramatic, so Tango.

  • foodycatAlicia

They’ve done something very strange to her boob/underarm on the cover. It looks painful! Which is a shame because I think her face looks good. Love the Balenciaga!

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Love, love, love Keira. And someone needs to hogtie Kristen Stewart and read her the bit about trade-offs and the machine over and over and over again.

    • Meg0GayGuys6

      Or just hogtie Kristen period.

      • Carina Souza

Why? she seems to be one of the few honest and realistic person in this business. She tries to stay true to herself

    • Maya Laukaran

This is EXACTLY what I thought when I read the quote!

Kristen always goes on and on about how she just wants to be an actor and didn’t sign her name to fame and celebrity. My answer to that is ‘you singed on the dotted line sweetheart, you just didn’t read the fine print carefully.’

  • MilaXX

Nice to see a celeb quote that doesn’t induce eye rolls.

  • Chartreusite

    J’adore the balenciaga.

  • C. C. Winslow

    Better than the models.

  • Sobaika

She is perfect. I love her so.

    That is all.

    • Jennifer L.

    • SassieCassy

      lol someone definitely doesnt agree!

i hate this new commenting system

      • Sobaika

You mean the dislike thingy? Whoever it is just doesn’t understand the perfection of Keira (Ms. Knightley if you’re nasty). Pity them.

        • ankali

It could have been an accident! I once accidentally down-voted one of my own posts!

  • tereliz

Love the cover, and that Balenciaga! I also appreciate that the questions were very much about her career and fame, and that she managed to sound so very down to earth.

  • Courtenay P

Beautiful Balenciaga, but that Chanel is making me sad. So dowdy.

    • Jackie4g

I like the Chanel until you get to the hem, which is indeed dowdy. So I like three quarters of the Chanel. An unbroken column would have made all the difference.

      • Guest

That Chanel is totally for Angelina!

    • Isabel

I like the back of Chanel better than the front. And, it’s so expensive for such a fugly dress.

  • stubbornthoughts

I love her face so fucking much.

  • Pants_are_a_must

You can count on Keira Knightley to give a good line. And a good shot. Is it a wonder she’s been on the cover of so many magazines?

  • flamingoNW

She’s not annoying me in these pictures (no fish face). She looks beautiful.

  • RebeccaKW

She is gorgeous and seems so fun and down-to-earth. She, Emma Stone, and Jennifer Lawrence are my imaginary best friends.

  • siriuslover

The Balenciaga shot is great. I just wish she’d find something else to do with her lips. I’m still angry at that photographer who told her never to smile because she had an ugly smile.

  • Bert Keeter

The Balenciaga is a cross between a Bishop’s cloak and a flamenco dancer….Ole!

  • procrastinatrice

She tops my rational hate list (mainly because her overacting and stupid expressions drive me nuts, and because she has a habit of ruining my favorite literary heroines), and I will admit the machine comments are spot on, but the success comments seem canned to me and annoy me to no end.

    • MRC210

Thank you. I must admit I’m embarassed to have ragged on her so much in the past for her duck-face, now that I realise that she really does have a face like a duck and there’s not much she can do about it. Although, closing her mouth would help.

The Chanel dress and Balenciaga top are hideous, but I do like the Balenciaga skirt.

  • marlie

I love the Balenciaga shot, too. And I love Keira, too.

  • kingderella

i like her pose and face, but i think the balenciaga is one ugly dress.

the chanel, on the other hand, i love… especially with the WTF-hem hidden.

  • kmk05

It is extremely ironic to me that the cover touts ‘Sexy hair: glossy and va-va voom volume’ when the only thing I irrationally hate in all the pictures is her haircut. She is rocking the hell out of those clothes.

She sounds like someone with a great head on her shoulders.

  • piecesofconfetti

Not super in love with what they did to her hair, but she wears the dresses well.

  • Ashley Alvarez

YES. It is all about the Balenciaga. That shot is a WERQ for me.

  • librarygrrl64

I don’t always love her acting, but she’s a fabulous model and seems like a decent human being as well.

  • Imasewsure

I’m neutral on her as an actress but I always love her as a model. Gorgeous face! Love the drama in these shots

  • yaby

Great shot: She makes a great model! I wish she would have focused at that. She is such a bad actor with only one expresion on her face. She could hurt fewer people by preforming in less movies and ruining them.

  • another_laura

That Balenciaga is to die for. I can hear the flamenco music – stomp it out, Keira!

  • Danielle Lisle

That Balenciaga is stunning on her.

  • Dora K.

Love her photos, love her in interviews, love her as an actress. I can see why some people react badly to her acting… or to her lower jaw. But I just fell in love with her in “Bend It Like Beckham” and she never gave me a reason to fall out.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

That girl gives such great face. Love the second dress, too.

  • j_anson

Ugh, she’s still on my irrational hate list, but at least she’s not whiny in interviews.

  • formerlyAnon

She’s so pretty she could wear anything. But I dislike that hair and it contributes to a lack of enthusiasm for these photos. Mature and intelligent sounding interview-bites.

  • JulieTy

So sorry to disagree, but I cannot stand her. And that pursed yet parted lip thing she does all the time.
The Balenciaga shot is, I grant you, very pretty. 😉

  • Crystal

LOVE the Balenciaga. I am dying.

  • PeaceBang

I like her so much more as a model than as an actress.

  • Sara Munoz Munoz

Wowwww….. them’s some ugly clothes. Kudos for not looking ridiculous.

  • scrappy1

The Balenciaga is lovely, but her face in that shot . . . It looks like she’s just hung a picture on the wall and is trying to figure out if it’s straight.

  •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I am actually coveting her brow. Overplucked mine in my youth. Sigh.

    • Anniebet

At least the heavy brow looks good on her. Many women in the public eye have gone overboard with it and look like they’re auditioning to be an extra in a remake of Clan of The Cave Bear.

  • unbornfawn

    Can’t help but like her.

  • subwaycars

I love her so much. I know people find her insufferable but I think she generally is pretty intelligent, orat least not eye-roll-inducing, when she speaks. Plus, she’s stunning.

  • guest2visits

Dear God I hate that Balenciaga. On everyone.
It’s the hated top that effects me like nails on the chalk board. The top-half of a priest vestment over a flamenco skirt. Ick.
Keira herself is very pretty, love the second pic.

  • ankali

Jesus, that Balenciaga is even more amazing on her than on the runway. Love. It.

  • berkeleygirl

As usual, she blows the models out of the water. She’s made the transition from teen to adult with understated grace. Though Love Actually is a bit schmaltzy for my taste, it stuns me that she was, at most, 18 when she made the film. A decade before Jennifer Lawrence won her Oscar, Knightley was effortlessly playing a character also much older than herself.

  • Gotham Tomato

“Tlo said: Them’s the rules, kids. Now get out there and work that pole.”

    Yep. (Tell that to Zosia).

When photographers refer to some people as having faces the camera loves, they are talking about Keira. She has got the goods and knows how to work them.

  • DesertDweller79

Love the way that Balenciaga photographs. She looks great there. I, too, loved her quote about the selling it as a trade off for getting to make movies.

  • Rhonda Hanson

Rachel Zoe is wearing that same Chanel top in the April edition of Elle, while holding her son.

  • Amelia Pitts

She is stunningly beautiful. Not a bad actress either. I don’t think she has a whole lot to say though – whenever I’ve seen her interviewed on tv, I about die of boredom and flip it off. She’s not exactly Tina Fey or Jennifer Connelly when she opens her mouth, so, yeah, I’ll look and admire, but brains? I’m sure she’s average, but meh.
