Katy Perry in Thakoon

Posted on April 12, 2013

Ooooh, Miss Katy. So close. You almost pulled off “sophisticated.”

Katy Perry attends Coach’s 3rd Annual Evening of Cocktails and Shopping to Benefit the Children’s Defense Fund in Santa Monica, California in a Thakoon dress accessorized with a Coach clutch, Christian Louboutin pumps and Dannijo jewelry.

And subsequently, we almost love this look for her. We admit that dress has a bit too much going on – and we’re not about to sing the praises of sheer side panels – but it’s perfect for her because it’s got pops of color, visual interest, and a feeling of oddness to it, while still managing to look chic. Well. Almost chic, anyway. We think we like the idea of this look more than the actuality of it. Let’s run down the problems that become apparent after the initial good impression.

  1. Sheer side panels, like we said.
  2. Weird bunching at the shoulders that looks like a bra strap
  3. A really, really ugly belt, pulled too tight and causing wrinkling through the torso.
  4. A huge, incongruous necklace that doesn’t go.
  5. An ugly bag.

But we feel like some good accessorizing and a little zhuzhing could go a long way to make this look better. It all comes down to whether you can accept the sheer side panels, we guess. They seem pretty perfectly Katy, which is why it’s a shame this is styled sloppily. It really could have worked better.

A perfect example of how bad styling can ruin a cute dress.

Sheer side panels are the Work of Satan, but I don’t mind the dress otherwise. Even the sheer piece at the bottom kind of works for Katy.

It’s the sheer front panel that screws the pooch.

I have a soft spot for Thakoon from the September Issue. Anyone who can stand in their shoes, on their feet, with their eyes open, in front of Anna Wintour is OK by me. And yet this doesn’t win me over.

      • decormaven

Yes, he totally won me over in that documentary. I loved the segment when he was designing the interpretation of the big white shirt, and his comments. “See now… that’s perfect.” Loved his happiness at the moment of creation.

    • homofascist

I am digging the dandelion cooch!

      • jetpackdino

I kinda am too! At first I didn’t like it, but now it seems cool… subversive… very Perry.

    • jw_ny

The cooch explosion bugs me…as does the belt. the rest I like, sheer panels and all.

      • BeeBeauNYC

“Cooch explosion” made me LOL. Thank you!

      • mightbewrong

Aw, I feel like it was just yesterday when I was lamenting that every dress gets a ‘crotch _____’ comment. Because it was.

exactly; it makes it look like her “lion” is less than dandy.

    • LaylaSV

I like the styling and think it works for Katy. She isn’t a minimalist and although the accessories aren’t strictly in keeping with the spirit of the dress, the total look is right on brand.

      • drdarke

I actually agree with @LaylaSV:disqus – I think it works, kind of. It’s not great, but it’s not horrible – even with the side panels. And I like the necklace, myself….

That bag, though, is a bit too much color.

    • MilaXX

Devil is in the details, that bag was the first thing that jumped out at me. The unnecessary necklace and fit issues were the deal breakers. How sad is it that I’d actually be willing to overlook the sheer panels?

    • Griffinqueen

Thakoon sounds like a planet in Star Trek and her ladyparts are a supernova!
I choose to see the world in sci-fi terms.

Amirite, Tom? (one nerd to another)

    • Donna Tabor

Also, those acid yellow fingertips. Screeeech!

      • Qitkat

I totally missed those on my pad size screen. Cute ring though.

      • decormaven

Is she a smoker? Or is this a result of a reaction to a harsh polish once it’s been removed? The nails do not look healthy.

        • fursa_saida

At least on my screen, it looks like she actually has yellow French tips painted on. On purpose. It’s SO yellow that it seems pretty unnatural, and it seems concentrated at the very tips.

    • Carly Warnock

Despite all this I still kind of love it. And I like the necklace too. At first I thought it was part of the dress.

    • Qitkat

I like the pop of the clutch, thought it was the perfect color to pull out of the dress. Dislike the bra staps and the wide sheer hem panel. And I’m ok with the belt, sheer sides, shoes, and the necklace, originally thought it was part of the dress.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

It’s not a totally put together look, but it definitely has potential. So close, Katy, SO close. WTF is up with the styling on the model, though? Are those.. HALF-bangs??

    • BeeBeauNYC

I love how excited the gay is next to her.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=2066192 Melissa Mellon

He almost steals the show, no?

    • Imasewsure

I could have lived with all of the missteps if she just left the ugly clutch at home.

    • j_anson

That belt is awful and is screwing everything up. Minus the belt, I think I would have liked either the necklace or the bag, but not both at once.

    • Theactualdiva

I find the styling acceptable. T and L, what necklace and clutch would you recommend?

    • alyce1213

I love this dress, except for all the sheer business. She’s toned down quite a bit, hasn’t she?

    • Anniebet

I’m usually so over the sheer black lace thing, but this stuff is really pretty. Too much of it, but nonetheless, pretty. Just a couple of panels around the hem would have been nice.

    • conniemd

I like the color of the clutch, otherwise boring. What I really dislike about the styling is the belt and the necklace. To be honest I didn’t even notice the sheer side panels at first glance. Dress fits her look.

    • l_c_ann

Loath the placement of the dandylion head.

    • Trisha26

Love the dress, no to the sheer side panels. Don’t mind the bag. The one item that bothers me is that necklace – it’s so unnecessary.

      • Theactualdiva

Yes, I take back my earlier comment. I took a closer look at the necklace…stars? Juvenile.

    • greyhoundgirl

Love the print–but do you really want a dandelion seedhead blowing at your vagina? I guess she does, but I’m not loving it.

    • demidaemon

I can’t get past the Patricia crazy eyes look she has going on here.

    • Maren Goeke

It’s not bunching at the shoulders that makes it look like a bra strap, it IS her bra strap. You can see the side of the black bra as well.

    • Kato16

Those shoulders. I thought they were stray chunks of hair at first glance. Never good.

    • hac51

      Aw, I’ve missed you, “zhuzh.”

    • formerlyAnon

The hair bothers me most. Maybe because it blends too much into the background and the dress, but it seems sorely lacking in pizzazz. It’s like the wrong head has been affixed to the dress.

Or maybe I just had an unhealthy attachment to her Smurf hair.

    • padma sallah

That was my first thought. Sheer panels seem very Katy and I like this way better on her than I did on Diane Kruger. She too did wear the same thing or something similar right?

    • kathrineb

This dress reads as her kind of dress…I love the print. Necklace was uncalled for and I wish the clutch did not have those pimply bumps on it.

    • decormaven

It’s the Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane-era) hair that is bringining this look down for me. Not that I don’t like GS, but the hair overpowers the look here.

    • kmk05

I’m going to be plebeian and say I actually don’t mind the slightly-off accessorising, but what kills it is the centre part. Her hair is so thick and heavy and that hairstyle does her no favours.

    • siriuslover

I feel bad for that guy in the background in the first picture. It’s one of those “don’t tag me” photos, even if he is standing behind KP.

    • ccm800

the shoe shine black hair is horrible on her.

    • butter nut

the dress itself is fabulous. but it’s meant for a girl who’s straight up & down. miss katy has curves. so the line of the dress is broken & the whole look starts to get sloppy on her. maybe if it fit better, she could have pulled it off. but ultimately, it’s just not her dress.

    • Elleachaudaucul

This would have looked so much better with her hair up or gathered somehow,

    • P M

I love that the dude on her left looks like he’s cackling wildly :D

    • carnush

With a silver bag, and minus the belt and necklace, this would have been perfect. I love her makeup here as well.
