Katy Perry Double Shot

Posted on April 25, 2013

We think Miss Katy and her stylist-slave have come up with a slightly more sophisticated style for her while still looking very Katy.

Katy Perry attends ‘The Smurfs 2′ photo call in Cancun, Mexico in a Monique Lhuillier lace dress paired with Jimmy Choo shoes.

Monique Lhuillier Lace Ruched Cocktail Dress

Adorable! Positively Smurfy! We are a bit concerned about that army of Smurfs behind her, slowly storming the beach as they spell out the name of their people. They’re going to be right on her in an hour or two so she better get moving.

Anyway, we can put this dress on the very tiny pile over there under the sign that reads “Blue Lace Dresses That T Lo Likes.” This sounds silly, but the one thing that makes us happiest here is that she correctly belted the dress. We’re positively giddy over it. For some reason, starlets find putting belts on dresses as mystifying as nuclear physics. And everything going on in the head area is giving us life: The hair, the shades, the fab earrings. We even like the goofy headband, which is probably a step too far but it’s Katy Perry being stalked by a phalanx of Smurfs on a Mexican beach. What did you expect?

That last outfit was cute, but this is just breezily chic and fabulous while still maintaining her cartoon Smurfiness. Absolutely love this on her. In fact, we’re not sure anyone else could make this work as well.

She looks better than I’ve seen her in quite a while. The second outfit is delicious. And her smile in the close up is warm and genuine looking, which is a bit of a change. Normally we get robot Katy, performing her duty according to program.

    • Emily Giovanni

It seems like headbands are making a comeback.I am deeply ambivalent.

      • twocee

I wore them too much in junior high to be ambivalent. I vote a solid no on that trend coming back.

      • Nicole Chubb

As someone with hair that is too short to ponytail but long enough to get in my face, I am happy with the return of the headband. Plus, the 2nd scarf is a lot cuter than anything I wore in junior high.

        • H2olovngrl

Does something so functional ever truly go in or out? If headbands were out, I was completely oblivious to it!

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

Oooh, a D&G dress that doesn’t look like expensive widow’s weeds! It’s super cute. I like her in both looks, but prefer the second. And she’s not annoying me, which is refreshing.

ETA: A press conference for Smurfs 2. It is to giggle.

      • CPK1

        In Cancun no less!

      • http://twitter.com/carnivaltenten Ten Ten

I just snorted out VERY loudly. Thank you for this!

      • H2olovngrl

Ha! My first reaction was, “They made a Smurfs 2? Really? The first one was that good? Did it make a shit-ton of money? Color me surprised!” Yes, just like that.

        • Kikishua

I think you mean “colour me blue” ;)

    • procrastinatrice

I think she looks perfect, especially in the first look. I gasped a little at the close-up. Damn.

    • http://twitter.com/hugandpint Courtenay P

Katy Perry and D&G – a perfect fit.

    • CPK1

I think she looks beautiful and chic and so Katy. Also this:”This sounds silly, but the one thing that makes us happiest here is that
she correctly belted the dress. We’re positively giddy over it. For
some reason, starlets find putting belts on dresses as mystifying as
nuclear physics.” YES!!! As usual, TLo nailed it!

    • AViewer44

One question: is she wearing a second earring under that Lake- like curtain of hair? Or is this a cameras-only look?

      • AViewer44

BTW, I agree she looks terrific in both shots.

    • Introspective

      gorgeous, especially look #2.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

For some reason the second dress reads to me Dolce & Gabbana cabana. Might be the Carmen Miranda earring that set me off this morning. Or lack of coffee.

    • SewingSiren

I would have switched the striped dress for the beach and the lace for the indoor event. But other wise fine and very very Katy Perry/Smurfette.

      • gabbilevy

Her stylist must have packed her bag in the wrong order.

Either way, perfect for Katy, perfect for the movie. Love both.

    • Jessica RoweRock

those look like the heaviest earrings known to man.

      • schadenfreudelicious

no kidding, my earlobes are burning in sympathy….

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=571205045 Kent Roby

YES, this is exactly how I’ve been wanting to see her; she looks absolutely gorgeous with the appropriate dose of “quirky fun”. I hope someone is burning her plastic wardrobe now, or donating it back to 9-yr-old Trick-or-Treaters.

    • carnush

LOVE both of these looks. The blues look amazing with her dark hair and the makeup is perfect. Really beautiful.

    • MilaXX

I am convinced that her spirit animal is a smurf. She even made me like white shoes. Well played Katy Perry,

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Carol-Sorensen/1562147212 Carol Sorensen

She looks far better in the second one than the model does. only flaw? beige heels. Ugh, I hate beige.

    • jw_ny

a lot of snaps all the way around.

    • ringthing

She has one of the prettiest figures around. Both these dresses are perfect for her.

    • filmcricket

Really concerned that it looks like the hem is falling out of the D&G dress. The one on the runway doesn’t have the frayed hem that I can see, so what’s going on there?

Otherwise, yes, these are two fabulous looks for her. I gasped at the 2nd one.

    • ashtangajunkie

I don’t know if that’s her real hair or extensions, but her hair looks really gorgeous and healthy. Love these dresses on her. The styling is so perfectly Katy Perry. I adore that.

    • OrigamiRose

She looks perfect in the second one. Amazing.

    • Chartreusite

She looks absolutely gorgeous in that last shot. Also love that she’s been drifting towards the D&G lately…I hope it keeps up.

    • Heather

Very cute in both instances. However, I deeply dislike the white satin Jimmy Choo pumps – they look (to me) like dye-to-match shoes before they’re dyed.

    • Pants_are_a_must

First time I’ve ever actually wanted to own anything Katy Perry has ever put on her body, and that includes Russell Brand.

      • VicD

OMG – totally just snorted out loud in my cubicle at the Russell Brand comment!

    • eowyn_of_rohan

I’m deeming Katy Perry the best-dressed celeb of the week.

….oh look, pigs are flying by my cubicle!

      • drdarke

I think it’s the result of some kind of HooDoo curse that made everybody else not named “Kiernan Shipka” dress like Michael Bay trainwrecks this week, @eowyn_of_rohan:disqus .

    • nannypoo

Blue lace is an abomination but she looks so great in that first dress that I will look the other way just this once. The second one is beyond fabulous. I love everything about it.

    • merciblahblah

I think she is as cute as a bug in a rug. She almost reminds me of a kitschier, cartoonier version of Dita Von Teese (if such a thing is possible).

    • twocee

Color me impressed that she managed to wear a lace dress that doesn’t look like fungus.

She’s on my irrational celeb-love list, so it’s nice to see her style growing up a little bit without losing its Katy-ness.

    • jilly_d

The Striped number is terrific on her. And I’ll even forgive the earrings since she schooled everyone in precisely how to deploy a nude shoe.

      • l_c_ann

Do we forgive the hem that’s frayed badly in two places?

    • aeb1986

agreed she looks amazing in both! maybe we can credit the smile to her shedding John Mayer?

    • Kate

First pair of shoes = 1980’s prom.

    • tereliz

Good lord, that whole D&G collection is just HER, isn’t it? She looks great in both dresses, very chic, and very KATY.

    • http://www.facebook.com/agatha.guilluame.7 Agatha Guilluame

I dunno Kilt. With the combination of the length and the shape and the utter primness, she’s giving me Zooey Deschanel more so than ever. The second dress is cuter although the frayed hem is making me give her stylists the side-eye. And did they really need to copy everything from the runway look right down to those ridiculous earrings? She’s going to have saggy titty earlobes before she’s 40.

    • Janet B

Katy makes me smile. Dressing for Smurfs suits her perfectly.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1230057270 Allie Carter

I’m pretty sure the cuteness of the 2nd dress is outweighed by the racist earrings.

      • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Maybe they’re supposed to represent a god or a bodhisaatva or something?

        • fursa_saida

          Google “blackamoor jewelry”.

          • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

I did, and also found D&G defending their choice as a particularly Italian tradition relating to Sicily’s history of Moorish rule. Katie, interestingly, picked a white-faced one rather than a brown or black (which they also made), probably to deflect some of this criticism.

            • fursa_saida

I have never and will never understand why “Sicilians did it” makes it okay. Secondly, the “skin” is white, but the features and headdress suggest otherwise. It’s still taking racialized representations of “other” people, taking not even their whole bodies but their HEADS, and using them as accessories. There’s a no doubt apocryphal story that the tradition of Blackamoor jewelry and decor came from a Sicilian girl who used her Moorish lover’s skull as a vase. Like, that is the origin story.

            • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Artist Fred Wilson has apparently used blackamoor pieces in his installations, where he also collects a variety of stereotypical chotchkes and virtually forces us to consider them.

      • fursa_saida

Thank god, I thought I was the only one. I can’t believe those were even MADE in this decade, but that’s the fashion industry for you, I guess.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

“I’m pretty sure the cuteness of the 2nd dress is outweighed by the racist earrings”

I’m pretty sure that Katy had no idea that the earrings were the least bit controversial. They probably read as whimsical Carmen Miranda to her.

    • Imasewsure

Love both of these outfits. She is never dull

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Looks like she undid the ruching on the lace dress, which was supposed to be (for some reason) bunched up on one hip. Maybe she did the dress a favor?

    • msdamselfly

That second look is absolutely fab

    • poggi

Love it all. I love this shape of these dresses on her (and me). Cute and fun and sophisticated and flirty.

    • fursa_saida

I was happy about everything until the racist-ass earrings. I think bringing in something huge and whimsical was a good idea for Katifying the outfit, but this choice is not okay.

      • Tracy_Flick

I know!!! WTF with those earrings. Italians – oof. I traveled through Italy years ago with my friend who’s Black, and the comments she got just floored us. It’s like 1935 over there.

    • pop_top

I love both dresses, but I particularly like that Katy’s version of the lace dress doesn’t seem to have the ruching.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

She looks great in both photos, but I LOOOOOVE the Dolce & Gabbana dress in the second set of pictures.

    • kckris

is it just me or does the hem seem frayed in the second one…either way, i love both looks on her. she looks great!

    • http://www.facebook.com/conysoledad Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

I don’t care that much about Katy Perry but I loved both looks!! (except those weird earrings)
      Well done Katy!!!

      P.S.: I hate the first model’s sandals/boots things.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ann.verwiebe Ann VerWiebe

I don’t know anyone else but Katy who could make those earrings work. And, she really looks happy – which is a good thing!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1582777135 Melanie K. Morgan

Love the first one, but the second is just a little too awning-esque for me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Girl, you crazy! I love Katy Perry, even if you couldn’t make me listen any of her albums, she’s the most anatomically correct drag queen after miss Dita.

    • random_poster

Katy looks fab. Smurf 2 is scaring me.

    • bellafigura1

Love the dresses and her look … both shoe choices are boring.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

She could wear just about anything from that D&G collection and make it sing.

    • MK03

For a second, I thought she was wearing a Smurf head as an earring, to serve as a warning to the others…

    • Qitkat

I’ve been reading this mornings posts in reverse order, and I want to know what you guys put in your coffee this morning. Because every post just gets funnier. It’s shaping up to be a great day!

Katy is beyond fabulous in both of these dresses. Possibly because blue is my favorite color. Or probably because she has nailed both looks. I adore the sunglasses, and I am giddy over the insanity of the ridiculous, adorable earring. Katy does not disappoint.

    • stubbornthoughts

Both of these are amazing. I want both dresses for when I…am in a Smurf movie? Fuck it. I’ll just go to Cancun.

    • lbl

That last dress is absolutely perfect on her. Though I kind of wish her shoes weren’t nude.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

      Me likey! Yay, Katy!

    • formerlyAnon

      Mama got her mojo back!
I was starting to doubt, but these two are fab. The shades in the first on are especially a treat.

    • musicandmochi

Bottom dress looks too mumsy blouson up top for me. Everything else is perfection.

I lied: the first look should have either the headband (which I favor) or the white heels. One or the other.

God I love how great she looks here!

    • Anniebet

Beyond adorable, IMO. I like the first look a whole lot, but the second one is pure bliss.

    • VicD

Interesting – you wouldn’t think ANYONE could take a D&G look straight off of the runway and make it work, but she did. Even the headwrap! My only complaint … I thought those earrings were little life-sized Smurf statues (or real Smurfs just hanging onto her lobes for fun). How disappointing that they aren’t.

    • http://twitter.com/abcdefghijadzia Jadzia

LOVE that Dolce and Gabbana dress. Covet it. Too bad it probably costs about 4 months’ rent.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

I could kiss her new stylist because I went from loathing her to loving her just like that. Great dresses and just ‘katied up’ enough that she is still she.

    • pookiesmom

Is this movie seriously still a thing?

    • Trisha26

I guess I just hate her, both these outfits are so costume-y/cartoony I feel like screaming. Really over her in general.

    • H2olovngrl

I am not sure how to put this, but she looks like a grown up version of herself. Like, she is still cute and quirky but more self assured and confident in her style and fashion choices. Well, no matter what, she looks Fab.

    • Nikki

I would just like to say that you made my day by making a nuclear physics reference on the day that I just defended my Doctoral defense in nuclear physics :)

P.S. Love the outfit, and love the direction her fashion has been going.

    • PeaceBang

Thank you for my happy Blue Katy of the day. Love this girl. I think she’s a fashion marvel.

    • xmixiex

oh my god, LOVE dress 2. right down (up?) to the celia cruz earrings.

    • https://plus.google.com/108251075533777132179/posts Frank Lithium

Style evolution, you’re doing it right.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

I’m pretty sure she’s the one leading the Army of Unsmurfed.

      Smurfette out.
