Julianne Moore in Alexander McQueen

Posted on April 29, 2013

Okay, that last post was really mean to your eyes, which are probably still mad at us. In apology, we offer the following evidence that Julianne Moore has figured out that the best look for Julianne Moore is … Julianne Moore.

Julianne attends the premiere of ‘The English Teacher’ during the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City in an Alexander McQueen dress accessorized with Narciso Rodriguez shoes and an Alexander McQueen clutch.

In other words, she doesn’t need wacky Lanvin dresses in order to make a style statement. Now, we don’t want anyone to think we’re against flying your fashion freak flag and wearing things that make you happy, even if they don’t suit you best. Julianne should continue indulging her predilection for Frankendresses if that makes her happy, but it makes US happy to see her working the simple frock into her wardrobe rotation, because despite her attempts to rail against it, it  really does work best for her. Attagirl.

Although the shoes are entirely too cray.

Wow. The shoes are terrible, but the dress is such an improvement they can be overlooked.

    • carpediva

Sadly, what has been seen, cannot be unseen.

    • poggi

If she would wear flattering dresses like this, I could deal with any crazy-ass shoe she wanted to put with it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/agatha.guilluame.7 Agatha Guilluame

The dress is flattering but I would wear it to work. Does that detract from it?

  • aeb1986

She looks fabulous in that color. Some jewelry would have been appreciated though. But yes- simple does her body good!

This is why, as a ginger, I wear A LOT of purple.

Most people look better without all the frou-frou and weird embellishments…also, one can be edgy without being ugly.

  • understateddiva

Just once, I’d like to see her wear an insanely romantic Elie Saab, but it probably wouldn’t suit her taste. Maybe someone has convinced her to keep the crazy in her accessories and shoes, and I can live with that!

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Man o man, that shade of purple is her Bestie!

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Purple is always a good friend to a redhead!

    • drdarke

Nice outfit and she looks good in it – which seems odd to praise someone for, but it just works.

      Even the shows aren’t…awful….

      • Louise Bryan

        No, the shoes are awful.

        • drdarke

I find myself in the uncomfortable position of having to defend shoes that I feel are, at best, mediocre, @google-bf948c72ce05cd62dfbf75256e6ffe6c:disqus – but they don’t shriek “FASHION CRIME!” on her feet, unlike a lot of other footwear I’ve seen on here recently: i.e., those shoes both Zoe Saldana and Gwen DeMarco Alice Eve are wearing for that ST: INTO DARKNESS Photocall in Berlin, or those too-kooky for words heels Taraji P. Henson was wearing at the MUD screening.

        • http://twitter.com/wendylogic Wendy

those nasty shoes work against the whole violet vibe!

  • carnush

LOVE this look. Don’t mind the shoes at all.

  • MzzPants

Oddly, I like the shoes with it. And that color is terrific for her! More purple, Julianne!

  • MilaXX

Love the dress, hate the shoe.

  • SugarSnap108

That color is fabulous on her. Shame about the shoes.

  • Nikko Viquiera

That purple really brings out the green in her eyes and the red in her hair. awesome!

  • http://twitter.com/nyazgirl NYAZGIRL

I love the shoes…just not with that dress. Get you some, ginger-sister!

  • msdamselfly

She looks so much better in simple

  • Introspective

gorgeous. full stop. she’s such a stunner. I dont even mind the shoes. loving that ring as a pop of color too.

not a werq but certainly she’s selling the look.

  • Pants_are_a_must

It’s not the most flattering frock, but it’s a far cry from the Lanvin and Tom Ford sartorial atrocities she used to wear.

The shoes are terrible, and not offset by that unbelievably awesome clutch.

  • Haley Buchanan

I always love a redhead in purple. She looks chic and comfortable. The shoes are awful, but the clutch and that green ring are beautiful accessories. Well done!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

That purple looks spectacular on her. I choose to not believe the shoes are happening.

  • decormaven

Averting eyes from hiddy shoes to appreciate the color of the dress. Well played on dress, not so much on the footwear.

  • lobsterlen

The horror of those shoes. I am not sure if it is those shoes or the length of the dress or the combination but her knees look odd. She is so fair skinned pantyhose would help a lot here. The dress is lovely.

    • demidaemon

“The Kids Are Allright”, if I’m remembering the title correctly?

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

She really has a hate on for attractive shoes.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I love this. The color is beautiful, and the dress doesn’t have 9,000 elements going on. I hate the shoes, but that’s just me. Julianne clearly does so much better with simpler shapes and silhouettes.

  • TheAmericaness

Me thinks that many a celebrity mistakes expensive for “in good taste” – like those shoes for example. The dress – definite Yes.

  • SewingSiren

I like the mean one better. That’s just how I roll.

  • Tracy_Flick

    Everything above the neck: Beautiful.
Neck to knees: 20-year high school reunion-ish, but not bad.
    Knees down: No.
    Accessories: YES!

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Pretty, all her colors, but yeah, a more airy shoe would have been less focus-pulling.

  • GorgeousThings

Those shoes should be taken out back and burned.

    • BrooklynBomber

      at the stake.

  • Qitkat

As that flirty little ruffle at the hem is so sassy, Julianne does not need to looks so tentative here. Royal purple is stunning and so flattering on her.

  • H2olovngrl

She always makes some dubious shoe choices. I am glad you pointed it out.

  • KayEmWhy

I wish pantyhose would make a comeback.

    • RebeccaKW

I love her bare legs. All those freckles, muscle tone. The natural paleness. I am glad she didn’t wear hose.

    • ballerinawithagun

Stocking are supposed to be back, why aren’t they paying attention. She could get her freakiness out with some beautiful Wolfords!

      • KayEmWhy

I’m hopeful then that they’re back. Bare legs look so unfinished unless you’re going to the beach or the mall.

  • http://twitter.com/ms_smartiepants Beth Mellone

    Color: fabulous
Silhouette: fine, flattering, but a bit boring
    Shoes: hideous
    Clutch: also fabulous
Ring: Cool, but kinda clunky next to the clutch
Circular flounce on dress: I hates it! Hates it, my precious! Gah, add some visual interest at the hem some other way!

  • roble ridge

Love love love this color on her. But yes, she could have picked better shoes.

Her face is really distracting me. It looks to me like she had too much Botox. I hope she doesn’t go the Nicole Kidman route, because Julianne Moore has such a gorgeous and unique beauty.

  • MoHub

Say no to the shoes. And buy some hose.

  • padma sallah

It’s suprising what colour can do to her. Very pretty. And while those shoes are admittedly cray I think they would work very well with a pair of skinny jeans.

  • Trisha26

Agree, she looks lovely, shoes are atrosh!

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

It’s so brave of her to come out after having broken both her feet and donned the dreaded air boot.

    Bless her heart.

  • Janet B

Amazing how beautiful she looks in such a simple dress. Plus, that is a lovely shade of purple on her.

  • unbornfawn

She looks wonderful until we get to the knees. Loose the ruffle and burn the shoes!

  • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

This dress is too big for her, no? Hair and makeup are perfect though.

  • maggiemaybe

Redheads in purple: it’s a very good thing. With different shoes I think this could have been a Werq, no?

  • BigGirlDownNow

That dress is a great color, but she is styled all wrong. Ick.

  • lulubella

How are those shoes cray? Or any more cray than the open toed booties we’ve been seeing ALL SEASON and last seasona and on and on. I’m not a fan, but they look run of the mill / played out at this point, not cray.

  • capybara_cafe

I just can’t with those shoes.

  • http://twitter.com/kitchenflails Cassidy Olsen

She looks fantastic despite the shoes, and I would commit crimes for that clutch.

  • http://www.facebook.com/conysoledad Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

    Those shoes should be burnt.

  • MandyM

This is the best she’s looked. Ever.

  • demidaemon

Agreed on all points. Keep up the good work, Julianne. Now, about that shoe wardrobe…

  • l_c_ann

Stockings might make her knees less lumpy. Or maybe that’s the function of the shoes.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=645442822 Sophia Vaccaro

I honestly think she is one of the most beautiful women EVER. Possibly due To my love of her in the kids are all right, but either way I can never care what she is wearing because im busy being overwhelmed.

  • JauntyJohn

She is 52. 52! Her face is flawless — as in, literally without a flaw.
And that color is sumptuous on her.
Love the little ruffle, makes the dress something more than standard issue.
The shoes… well, honestly, all the little openings vertically down the front make them too busy. With a long black leather pant? Yes. But with that dress they fight for attention.

    The clutch is awesome.

  • ccm800

purple on a redhead is hard to beat.

  • Tuneful54

Hair, makeup, and dress color are wonderful. Bravo. Shoes and bare legs are not. The dress is saved somewhat by its hem, but it is too old-lady and/or Easter Sunday at church, especially for this event. But she should hang in there, she’s making progress.

  • EEKstl

Great dress and color on her, but the next step in the Julianne Rehab is to get away from ridiculous, unflattering SHOES!

  • guest2visits

The fringe at the bottom of the dress and the shoes are a scroll down no.
