Jessica Paré for L.A. Confidential

Posted on April 09, 2013

Just like Christina Hendricks with pencil skirts and January Jones with Grace Kelly drag, it seems Jessica is going to have to muddle though quite a few “wild prints” editorials before she gets to have her own style, separate from her Mad Men character’s.

Jessica Paré covers the May 2013 issue of L.A. Confidential magazine in a Mary Katrantzou dress.

On loving what she does: “I’m so goddamn lucky. I can wake up at 4 o’clock, drive to work in the dark, and drive home in the dark, and there’s not one single morning where I’m [forcing myself] to get my ass out of bed into the shower, where I’m not so excited and grateful that I have this amazing job to go to. My drive to work is just this whole symphony of gratitude.”

On being on Mad Men: “Nobody’s more excited about me being on the show than I am. My friends and people I work with actually think it’s kind of hilarious when I get recognized, because I’m far more excited than the other person. At first it’s like, ‘You’re on that show Mad Men…’ [To which I reply,] I know! Isn’t it crazy? I get mocked a little bit, but I do feel that way.”

Not that we think this is a bad editorial –  well, that’s not quite true. It’s poorly staged, for sure. Nothing less interesting than the mugshot-style, up-against-a-wall  fashion spread)

We’re just saying that it’s hard for stylists to look at her and not see the intense style of the character she plays. She looks mostly cute in mostly everything – except for that Peter Pilotto thing, which is horrifying.

Unlike Christina and January, however, she looks much, much better with modern makeup. That drag-style, mod Megan Draper eye makeup may be fun in a period piece, but it’s mighty harsh for the modern lady. We still love it, though. We’re just glad to see her in a softer, more modern face.

  • gabbilevy

Not her fault, but the only one that’s really doin’ it for me is the last one, where she’s got an expression other than Model!face! (Choosing to ignore that second one because it really is horrifying)

    • marlie

Yep, she’s really, really pretty when she actually smiles.

  • Kate Andrews

I’m not too crazy about any of the clothes here, except for the Jason Wu. That’s cute.

    • luciaphile

You beat me to it. With the exception of the Jason Wu outfit, those are some really fugly clothes

  • Kate

Those silver pumps in the Jason Wu shot should be burned.

  • Claire Benedict

I always thought the Mad Men make up did her no favors. This is proof of how pretty she really can be.

    • MK03

Word. I want to take this magazine to MM’s makeup people and shout “See how great she looks when you put lipstick on her?!?! DO THAT!!”

      • Tom and Lorenzo

Yeah, but they’re going for a period Mod look on Mad Men.

        • MK03

I know, but surely they can find a way to give her a little more color while staying true to the period. Her mouth just vanishes on screen.

          • lilibetp

Her mouth vanishes, but her teeth don’t.

          • JasmineAM

          • vandeventer

That was the look then. Emphasis on the lips was not in style. It was all about dark eyes. Or even with the “clean” look, the lips would not be emphasized at all.

      • vandeventer

Really? I always find myself so annoyed at how often they have Megan wearing RED lipstick on the show. Even on Sunday night’s episode, they STILL had Megan with dark red lips in some scenes. It is actually jarring to see. For a young woman, heck even an older woman, in ’67-’68, dark red lips would be sooo not in style. Pale or no lipstick ruled then. Same goes with the amount of blush used in some scenes…but that’s a whole other topic.

  • Introspective

Peter Pilotto designs tend to err on the side of horrifying so who’s surprised there. but the spread is so in the Mad Men wheelhouse that while she looks cute in most shots, indeed it seems uninspired.

  • decormaven

The photo styling is a little too catalogue for my taste, but she is pleasing to look at. I keep getting a Breck Girl vibe from these shots- she is so clean and shiny.

    • FloridaLlamaLover

Breck girl — that describes her to a tee.

  • MK03

I’m sorry, but that Mary Katrantzou…wtf is going on with dress? Needs editing in the worst way.

    • Lori

And the first thing that needed to go is the giant Christmas bow business in the middle. What is that about?

      • kerry noodles

That’s not a real bow, right? It’s a picture of a bow? That dress is so confusing.

        • Lori

Yes, I think it’s a picture of a bow. I’m not sure if that makes it better or worse. As you say, it’s a confusing dress.

      • VicD

Yes, is that an actual giant gold bow on that dress, or trompe l’oeil? I can’t tell.

        • Lori

I’m about 99% sure it trompe l’oeil. I have no idea what a trompe l’oeil Christmas bow is doing in the middle of what otherwise looks like a display at the spring garden show.

  • TDSE

She looks like a brunette Elizabeth Banks in the second one.

I actually like some of these, even if they are basic.

  • MilaXX

That first dress is aggressively ugly. Seeing the full view on the model makes it even worse. In fact the only look I remotely like on her is the L’Wren Scott

    • conniemd

I really liked the L’Wren Scott best too. The others, meh.

  • Coleen

I just wish she would close her mouth in some shots. She’s bordering on Jessica Simpson territory here.

I want to see FLOTUS in that Jason Wu top real, real bad.

    • marlie

      Yes, about the open-mouth shots.

  • MsOlympia

Her boobs are distractingly airbrushed in the second photo.

  • Courtenay P

I guess I’m the odd man out, but I’m loving the Katrantzou from top to bottom

    • MissAmynae

right there with you! I unabashedly love her stuff. Its interesting to follow the differences between European and American fashion blogs- her work and Pilotto seems to be much more accepted as cool and edgy across the pond. Its intriguing.

    • Celandine1

No, I love it too. I think the cover is great and that is difficult dress to pull off.

  • FloridaLlamaLover

Why did Brood think that Grandma’s short housecoat would be cute for Spring 2013?

    • zenobar

I was going to say. That Brood dress thing is really just a glorified cobbler’s apron. The kind my Gram would wear when peeling potatoes for the Sunday pot roast.

  • thecitysleeps

Gah she’s so cute. My favourite is the Brood dress photo.

  • cowper

I’m seeing Julianna Margulies in that last shot, and now I can’t stop seeing it.

  • Spicytomato1

I love her as Megan, eye makeup and all. Although her eye makeup was lighter when she and Don were in Hawaii and I remember thinking how fresh-faced she looked. The cover shot recaptures that a little bit for me.

I’m trying but I can’t find anything here that doesn’t look better than her MM costumes, which I generally covet.

  • Trisha26

Still not sold on her acting abilities but she actually has a few more expressions in this piece. The Pilotto is my least fave as well.

  • marlie

She’s prettier when she actually smiles. That open-mouth/mouth-breathing expression makes her look… weird… to me. But either smiling or even closed-mouth, and she’s GORGE (and for some reason, I can’t stand the woman). Yes, the clothes are straight out of Megan Draper’s closet, but they look great on her.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Thank god the cover doesn’t feature the mullet skirt on the Mary Katrantzou dress.

  • RebeccaKW

“She looks mostly cute in mostly everything – except for that Peter Pilotto thing, which is horrifying.”
This! It actually halted me in scrolldown, b/c DAMN that thing is hideous (she looks really cute in the photo, but that top should be burned). She’s beautiful and I’m jealous of her eyebrows.

  • Erica

She’s not what I would label beautiful, exactly, but she’s very striking in these photos and on screen. Your eye goes to her and stays on her. This serves her character well in MM. I wonder if it’s the same in person.

    • flamingoNW

She’s not beautiful? Boy, you have some high standards….

  • Jon

Her response to being recognized in public might be the most honest thing ever said by a famous person in an interview.

    • NDC_IPCentral

It rather echoed her pleasure at being recognized on Waikiki Beach as the soap opera minor character and asked for an autograph.

      • JasmineAM

That’s immediately what I thought of too!

    • Carly Warnock

Completely agree. I would be that way if I was a celeb, although it may get old fast so let’s see what she says in a few years.

  • kerryev

Why put her in that Peter Pilotto?

  • Tatiana Luján

    Her face is gorgeous.

  • Rhonda Shore

That first dress with the big gold bow seems really fetishistic…

  • musicandmochi

All I can see is how similar she looks to Rachel Menken in the penultimate shot.

And yes. The Peter Pilotto offends me. The shorts are HORRIFYING.

    • schadenfreudelicious

word…and i still wish Don and Rachel would have some how ended up as a couple…

      • Isadora Paiva

I would never wish Don on a good woman, she certainly did better without him

        • schadenfreudelicious

true, she was a good woman, i suppose i just wish for Don’s redemption…highly unlikely

      • musicandmochi

Honestly, I think Rachel is TOO GOOD for his sorry ass. xD

  • kingderella

shes overdoing it a little with her “symphony of gratitude”, but ill take it over “being rich and famous is so hard!” any day.

    good cover, nice enough editorial.

    • Spicytomato1

Aw, I thought that was sweet and genuine. I know that feeling, and have evoked it for far less than being cast in my dream job!

  • Little_Olive

I lovelove the last shot. I wanna go have a beer with her.

The rest, agree: not her fault but not interesting, not even with those pieces. Actually, aside from the last dress none of the pieces really compliment her.

Oh and can we say about Peter Pilotto what we said about Rodarte last week?

  • Kathy_Marlow

I really love the Jason Wu..I think that is super cute.

  • Eva_baby

Strangely, she looks very “catalog model” not “editorial model” in this to me.

  • jetpackdino

I don’t know who this girl is. I’ve never seen an episode of Mad Men. But that face? That body? I would pay money to see her in a pair of ripped-up jeans, some leather…

I’m not saying she shouldn’t be in couture, not at all, I just don’t love what they’ve put Ms. Pare in *here*. Feels like a wasted opportunity.

  • Susi R

    Aww those quotes, adorable!

  • BrooklynBomber

    The clothes are mostly awful.

    • Louise Bryan

My favorite is the Jason Wu, which I’m amazed by because, in general, I don’t care for Jason Wu.

    • Emily

I HATE the second look. It’s not flattering in the slightest.

    • makeityourself

Horrid. Especially the Pilotto. It’s as though the stylist went through her racks and said “No, not that one, no ,no YES! That will look terrible on her!”

  • lizlemonglasses

All I can see in that Mary Katrantzou dress is Friends, “The One Where No One’s Ready,” when Phoebe gets hummus on her dress and sticks on a giant bow to cover it. “I thought, fine, I’ll be political.” “What are you supporting?!” “Duh! Christmas!”

    • ballerinawithagun

Perfect! I looked at that first shot and thought “Why is she carrying a Christmas present???” The clothes are all horrible one her and she usually looks good. And I agree with you boys, pushed up against a white wall is no way to do a fun photo shoot.

    • Mar8

  • Courtney St.Julian

Every piece I’ve seen from Peter Pilotto is terrible. On the runway and in the real world. None of it works.

  • Diego!

She delivers, doesn’t she? I think she looks amazing in every pic, what a gorgeous face she has! :)

  • MichelleRafter

She could wear a paper bag and still be stunning. She looks even better with barely any eye makeup than with. Not fair. BTW, is that a real gold metallic bow on that dress or is it op art? Bad either way.

  • subwaycars

That last dress is seriously adorable, as is the picture. I don’t even want to acknowledge that the second picture is a thing that exists.

  • librarygrrl64

She looks so cute in the shot with the Brood dress. Natural and happy and young.

  • NoGovernmentName

Sorry, those shorts give her polterwang.

  • Beth Kattleman

The model in the Katrantzou looks like a prettified Osha, that crazy-eyed Wildling travelling with Bran & co in Game of Thrones, doesn’t she?

  • gillian holroyd

LOVE the cover dress but there’s a dead animal on her shoulder.

  • Anniebet

So, did they photoshop the shadows as well?

  • demidaemon

I love the range of facial expressions she is giving here. She made the most of what she was given. I also believe that all Pilotto designs belong with Stella McCartney’s: in a bonfire. Or some other environmentally friendly disposal method.

  • plinkiedoodle

I love her and I love this spread!

  • trixietru

Fascinated with every little detail of Megan’s look on screen. I forgive her character everything based on her fashion.

  • marshmallowjane

These prints are ugly. They don’t flatter Jessica. They don’t flatter the runway models. Those blue shorts by Jason Wu are cute but they don’t go with the top.

Don is so unlikeable that his character is bringing the show down. I don’t understand what a deep woman can possibly see in him. He hardly talks. He gives very little to his wife in conversation or anything. I don’t know how he can function with all the alcohol he drinks. He seems pickled all the time. His vomiting in public was pathetic. I hope this character grows somehow. I hope that Jon Hamm gets to show some emotion this season.

  • rebeccanyc

This sweet and low ad is MAKING ME CRAZY! I can’t even look at the photos…ugh. worst. ad. EVER.

  • kathrineb

Her quotes make her seem really likeable and honest, this is the opposite to what usually happen when I read quotes from actresses.

  • MzzPants

She’s lucky and she knows it. I LOVE that.

  • Amelia Pitts

Bored to death – and that’s with crazy prints.
